This week on Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick sits down with drag queen legend, Willam Belli. Willam shares many stories from her time on Drag Race, working in the entertainment industry, and how she got to where she is today. The two of them also talk about Willam's journey with alcohol and how being in entertainment has impacted her relationship with substances. This episode has no short of laughs, gnats, or celebrity anecdotes! We would love to hear from you! Email us at ROOTED@PROMISES.COM About Willam Belli: Willam Belli, unanimously known as Willam, is an American drag queen, actor, singer-songwriter, reality television personality, author, and YouTuber. Willam came to prominence as a contestant on the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2012 but was disqualified in the "Frenemies" challenge. Before appearing on Drag Race, Willam worked as an actor, most notably playing the recurring role of transgender woman Cherry Peck in Ryan Murphy's medical drama Nip/Tuck. She has continued to perform in a variety of films, television series and web series, often in drag. In 2018, she appeared in the critically acclaimed film A Star Is Born. For her performance on the dark comedy web series EastSiders, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Digital Daytime Drama Series. Since 2012, Willam has recorded three albums of comedy music, mostly consisting of parodies of popular songs. Her second album, Shartistry in Motion, debuted at number one on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart. Between 2012 and 2014, she recorded several songs as part of the group DWV (alongside drag queens Vicky Vox and Detox), including the parodies "Chow Down" and "Boy Is a Bottom", whose music videos were viral successes. Following the breakup of DWV, Willam formed another drag supergroup, the AAA Girls, with Courtney Act and Alaska. In our Season 1 finale, we go out with a bang, or shall we say a Willam?! From the age of 5, Willam Belli has wanted to be in show business. At 40, the thing that keeps this beloved drag queen inspired to do what he does is his desire to bring joy to as many people as he possibly can! In his refreshing, open, unapologetic, and sometimes shocking way, Willam shares some of the major milestones that have led him to evolve from a 12-year-old blackmailer (his words!) into a world famous actor, singer-songwriter, podcaster, and radio-television personality. We discuss his early loss of innocence, his disqualification from Ru Paul's Drag Race, his struggles with eating disorders, and how he really NEEDS Jason Momoa ... emotionally. But Willam hasn't let any of this steal his spark, and you will hear how he has overcome some of his greatest challenges to end up exactly where he has always wanted to be! Be sure to tune in for this eye-opening and hysterical interview! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A man who makes a living performing in drag is probably pretty woke about trans issues, right? Sadly, it ain't necessarily so.  Former RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Willam Belli recently made some transphobic remarks on her YouTube show "Suck Less." "Just because someone says they’re a boy doesn’t make them a boy," Belii says on the show. "Just because you cut your t****** off and take testosterone, that doesn't change your chromosomes." Fans and critics were predictably upset by this seeming dismissal of the right and ability to self-identify. But it's not the first time we've seen transphobia in drag spaces. Lashes, lipstick, and platform heels can make it easy to forget many drag queens are still cisgender white men on the inside.  It brings to mind the times we've seen white drag queens using racist humor as part of their comedy routines (remember Shirley Q. Liquor?).

We're out of the studio and into the wilds of Fire Island, New York, for a very special episode of the Swish Edition. Scott & Steve (Dale was sadly MIA) report from this most amazing and storied summer playground of the gays. They breakdown their adventures in both Fire Island proper as well as their stay at the Grove Hotel in Cherry Grove, where they watched drag queens swim for their tips, enjoyed Daniel Nardicio's Icon Series featuring comedians/singers Lea Delario and Sandra Bernhard, and danced to the wee hours of the morning. Then, they head to the beautiful bayside home of the one and only Michael Lucas of Lucas Entertainment fame. This sometimes controversial figure talks about his steadfast support of Israel, why he goes the extra mile to make sure his adult films are first rate with high quality production values, why he believes safe sex films are the only way to go, what he loves to do at 3:00am, and much, much more. Your hosts had an amazing time sitting on the deck, watching the water, and capturing our "At Home with Michael Lucas" feature just for you! Catch it at the 21:15 minute mark. We also sat down poolside with another controversial character...actor, singer and former RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Willam Belli, who returns to the show for another go (and we STILL fucked up his name). Willam talks RuPaul, traveling the country performing, how many hits his parody videos are getting (including the great Chik-fil-A one, seen below), and much more. And Scott was excited to swing open the studio doors last Friday night to welcome back Sherry Vine and, for the very first time on Swish, New York-based drag sensation, Bianca del Rio. The girls were featured performers at the Cobalt/Level One complex across the street from the studio that night, so a team of friends, who were at the show, too, came over the studio to watch. You'll hear them in the background for this silly little chat (at the 42:20 mark). The boys also discuss Scott's new iPad; Beyonce's just-announced, post-baby concerts in Atlantic City (we're going!); setting expectations before a Grindr hookup; the violence against gays solidarity march in Washington (and you can help right here); Rosie's OWN show is officially cancelled; X-Files actress Gillian Anderson comes out; the hot twins of Elephant have a new song and video out, which we are loving; Willam Belli's Chik-fil-A parody video; Santorum's war on pornography; and, much, much more. You'll have to listen to this new episode to find out what the hell Episode 130's title is all about. This week, we welcome super fun, Washington, DC-based screen print artist Dave Peterson to the studio. His work is cutie cartoony and he also offers his work as t-shirts and even on underwear. We like his work so much, we commissioned a piece for our greenroom! You've got to check out BrandDave's nifty website. Sad News: Missing from this episode is Jason Royce. He was feeling a bit under but he did manage to make an interesting, if not dirty, call from his home while we were taping. We play it for you. Dale & Scott also chat with the multi-talented Willam Belli. He talks about the crazy fat-female-vampire film Blubberella that he co-wrote (you've got to see the insane trailer at the bottom of this page); his memorable roles in Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives and Nip/Tuck; his part in the new Wonder Woman television pilot; his rockin' band Tranzkontinental who regularly performs at the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd; he likes hanging out at Silverlake's MJ's Bar and Hollywood's Jumbo Clown Room; and, much more! This kid is fun stuff and we also play the song that burned up YouTube a few months ago, one of our favs, "The Vagina Song" (see the video below, too). Learn all about Willam on his site. And if that wasn't enough, the guys talk about: Bowling finger injuries Steven J. Walker's birthday celebration The possible extinction of redheads! The gay redhead events in SanFran and NYC Another True Blood star comes out as bi TheDailyHookup is Groupon for the gays Jonathan Bascope's new Live My Life remix What Hollywood stars made in 2010 Dale's new theme song The Swish Edition / AIDS Walk Washington Team (sign-up and/or donate) And underwear that doesn't hold your balls! All that and the news from Metro Weekly. Episode 130 is called, "Why I Otter - Clam Chowder" and you should listen to it with just a t-shirt on.
