Trying to find wholesome entertainment can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. As Christians, the most we usually hope for is entertainment that doesn't undermine what we believe. But finding entertainment that actually reinforces Biblical values while wrestling through tough issues, does that even exist? It does. In this episode, Catherine is joined by author Felicia Ferguson to explore the world of redemptive fiction, a genre that tackles real-life issues from a biblical perspective. Felicia's latest novel, When Secrets Come Calling, could be ripped from today's headlines. The story centers on a dark secret that threatens to destroy the lives of a former couple. Felicia's characters turn to each other and then to God for hope and answers. Catherine and Felicia also discuss the importance of finding inspiring stories that shine God's light, especially in a world where such content can be hard to come by. Together, they dive into the impact fiction can have in addressing tough topics and encouraging listeners to make a difference for God's kingdom. Join Catherine and Felicia for a laid-back conversation that offers a refreshing break from the usual tough topics discussed on the show, and find the perfect beach read for your summer vacation. BOOK GIVEAWAY!: Enter for a chance to win a copy of Felicia's award-winning debut novel, The Choices She Made by subscribing HERE or responding to Catherine's Instagram post.     GUEST BIO: Felicia achieved master's degrees in Healthcare Administration and Speech-Language Pathology, but has written since childhood and dreamed of authoring books that teach and inspire others. The authors of the new biblical fiction novel, Ahoti discuss their friendship across religious differences and their partnership in writing. Miriam was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and has lived in Israel since 1970. Her love affair with the Bible and ancient sources led to her series of books on daily life in Bible times, her first historical novel The Scroll, her newest novel Ahoti – The Story of Tamar, with co-author Eva Marie Everson, and hundreds of articles. That love grew over many years as a tour educator. Miriam's interest in the New Testament began with the respect that she learned for people of all faiths and cultures from her parents and her older brother and sister. Her writing, and her translating and editing of scholarly research on biblical antiquity on the one hand, and her 20 years as a translator on the news desk of the cutting-edge Israeli daily Haaretz, on the other, come together in a complex whole that, for Miriam, has made life in Israel a never-ending search for meaning, ever more so in troubled times. Eva Marie Everson is a multiple-award winning author and speaker who hails from the picturesque Southern town of Sylvania, Georgia. She is CEO of Word Weavers International (http://www.word-weavers.com/) and the director of Florida Christian Writers Conference (http://word-weavers.com/floridaevents). Tez Brooks is a multiple award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter, journalist, and author who understands the pain of sexual abuse, bullying in middle school, and then unfaithfulness and divorce. As a former law enforcement officer and police chaplain Tez knows that the stressful position of first responders is often scary, unpredictable, and infuriating. Where do you go to refresh and refocus when the world expects you to be thick-skinned and independent?     As a multiple award-winning author, filmmaker, and international speaker, Tez Brooks' work appears in Guideposts, Power for Living, The Upper Room, CBN.com, Clubhouse, Focus on the Family, Cru.org and more. His editorials are featured regularly and seen by over 30k readers each month. He is the president of two chapters for Word Weavers International.   First responders have one of the highest percentages of addiction, divorce, and suicide. As a police chaplain, Tez experienced the trauma of first responders and the need for hope. Tez' story is an encouragement for anyone and especially those who work as first responders.  INTERVIEW   Debriefing: Meditations of Hope for Those Who Protect and Serve is a collection of real-life experiences helping cops, correction officers, chaplains, and others to see God's hand in all they do, so they can better understand His loving care for those working the challenging and dangerous job of first responder. It's time to debrief.   The stressful position of first responders is often scary, unpredictable, and infuriating. Where do you go to refresh and refocus when the world expects you to be thick-skinned and independent? It can be difficult to balance your physical, emotional, and spiritual health, along with your social and family life, as you focus on your role to protect the public. It's easy to forget the bigger purpose God has for you.   Conventional wisdom holds that fathers have few parenting skills and that mothers always know best. The single father is often considered a mythical creature, found only in sitcoms as an object of humor or pity. Where does that leave real single dads? Too often, it makes them susceptible to overcompensation or apathy.  Tez Brooks knows those feelings all too well. He's traveled that road with his own children after an unexpected divorce. The Single Dad Detour is the result of his journey and the lessons he learned along the way. It is a guidebook for the rocky road of single fatherhood, extending encouragement, confidence, and challenges, using specific examples from dads who have survived parenting and have hope to offer.  There are no unreachable requirements for perfect fatherhood here and no twisty theological mysteries - just authentic, down-to-earth wisdom from one dad to another.

Welcome to season 2 of the Determined to Dance podcast. I pray that you'll be uplifted, encouraged, and will move forward each and every day. Today's episode, Prayer People, focuses on becoming a people determined to pray. Show notes: Prayer People “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” II Chronicles 7:14. If my people … pray. I debated on a title for this episode. Person of prayer or people of prayer? Prayer people? I went with prayer people because, even though we often pray alone, there is power in corporate prayer. Matthew 18: 20 says, “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” What could be more powerful than God in our midst? Churches, groups, and individuals are praying in agreement in 2022 concerning issues like COVID, inflation, supply shortages, and the war to our east. I've prayed with friends at church and on social media, believing that God has the chaos in His hands and hears every word I lift to Him. If we want to dance or flow in the ways and will of God in today's volatile world, we'll not only seek God in a one-on-one conversation but wherever two or more are gathered together. How? Physically praying with others. Whether in person, during a Zoom meeting, or on a social media app like Messenger, nothing compares to being present with someone and seeking God in real-time. At my church, The Bridge, prayer requests from the congregation and community are lifted up each Sunday morning and Wednesday night. The pastor and others lead, but we all pray together. Our individual focus is different as each person follows the leading of the Holy Spirit on exactly how to pray. But we're united. Praying in agreement. I love specific, focused prayer best with a friend or small group. I belong to Word Weavers International, a writing organization. Their mission is to help members find their unique voice, strive for the exceptional and not settle for the mundane, and to raise the quality of their members' writing to a publishable level. Though some groups meet in person, the two small groups I belong to gather via Zoom. My favorite time is at the end of each meeting where we share any problems or needs, then present them to God through unified prayer. Though our homes are in the United States, Canada, and Brazil, I feel an unrivaled closeness to my friends when we communicate with God. Praying for others. Prayer people intercede for each other. At The Bridge on Wednesday nights, we pray for family, friends, and neighbors in our community, as well as national and international needs. Our list has over 70 individual names or groups. We add to and take away names weekly but we never run out of people or situations that need God's touch. I pray at home and in the car, my favorite places to commune with the Father, but group intercession for others is special. To me, there's nothing more important that we can do than pray for others. Missions, outreach, in reach, and small groups are necessary but prayer is vital. The growth and spiritual health of any individual or church depends on whether or not we are reaching out often to the Father on behalf of ourselves or others. I've learned much about prayer from Pastor Jack Hayford. He said, “Prayer can change anything. The impossible doesn't exist. His is the power. Ours is the prayer. Without Him, we cannot. Without us, He will not.” God wants us to invite His rule into our world through prayer. What a wonderful privilege we've been given. An opportunity to be prayer people. Will you accept the challenge today? Let's pray: Father God, we come before You today and thank you for allowing us to be a people of prayer. You not only listen to our every word but You answer us through many different avenues.

Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Episode Summary: As a board certified clinical neuropsychologist, I can say with a fair degree of confidence that probably everyone can relate to experiencing shame and disappointment. We've all had high hopes and expectations that didn't turn out the way we wanted, and we've all experienced shame over what we've done or said, or failed to do, or because we haven't met our own or others' expectations for us. In this episode, we are talking with guest counselor and coach Tina Yeager about hope for overcoming discouragement or shame. Quotables from the episode: It is the enemy of our soul who seeks to get us to isolate ourselves when we are not meant to be isolated. I thought that if I starved myself, I would become acceptable to those around me. My self-esteem improved when I really came to realize that it was God who made me loveable, and He made me worthy. God created each of us to fulfill a specific purpose. God's standard for success is our obedience, while it's the world who says that to be successful we have to look or behave in a certain way or accomplish certain things. Self-esteem and shame often result from our negative self-talk, especially when we exaggerate our failures by saying “I always…” or “I never…” Self-esteem and shame often result from the fear of “not being enough.” But God says He has made us enough. Knowing something is a lie really comes back to knowing what the truth is. Comparison often breeds shame, discouragement, and low self-esteem and is rooted in comparing our worst day to someone else's best day. Scripture References: Ephesians 2:10 NIV: “For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Philippians 1:6 NIV: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13-14: NIV “From the beginning God chose you to be saved. . . that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 12:27 NIV: “You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” Matthew 22:37-39 NIV: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” Recommended Resources: Beautiful Warrior: Finding Victory over the Lies Formed Against You by Tina Yeager Hope for Body Image: How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others Finding Freedom from Comparing Yourself to Others Free Download: How To Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Social Media Links for Host and Guest: To connect with Tina Yeager: Website / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / LinkedIn / Pinterest For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: Order Book Breaking Anxiety's Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails  /  Website  /  Blog  /  Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson)  /  LinkedIn  /  Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube Guest: Award-winning author, speaker, licensed counselor, and life coach, Tina hosts the Flourish-Meant podcast and publishes Inkspirations Online, a devotional for writers. Episode Summary: Have you ever experienced a trial so great it turned your entire life upside down, inside out, or left you wondering how long you had to live? What would you do? How would you spend your time? To whom would you turn? As a neuropsychologist, I see thousands of patients who struggle with diagnoses ranging from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and learning disabilities to brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, and dementia. When they receive a diagnosis, there is often a mixture of emotion from relief to fear. Relief often comes from just knowing what has been causing their symptoms and knowing that treatment does exist, and yet the relief is often quickly replaced by the unknown of all that is yet to be faced. I often wonder how anyone faces such difficulties without a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and faith in God who promises to be with us at all times. Having been in situations like that personally, and seeing many patients facing such circumstances, I can tell you, we never quite know how we will respond until we are faced with the situation. In her book God’s Best During Your Worst, today’s guest, Robin Luftig recounts her story of her own diagnosis of a brain tumor and the next ten days that ensued from diagnosis to surgery. She shares the real life questions, fears, and other emotions she battled as she faced the very real possibility that the tumor or the treatment could claim her life. And during that time, she had to come to grips with the earlier life influences that shaped many of her beliefs about herself and her God. While I know of no one who would desire to go through such an ordeal, I suspect that if you asked Robin now, she would likely tell you that in many respects, what she gained through the experience was worth anything she lost in the process. For in the process, it drew her closer to her husband, her children, and her God; the very God who desires to use our trials to increase our faith and perfect it so that we will ultimately be complete in Him.  That’s what would allow us to count experiences like this all joy. James 1:2-4 reminds us, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” What a challenge it is, however, to see the joy in the midst of trouble, but our chances of doing so are increased if we will rely on the One who will not only carry us through the difficulties but also perfect our faith in the process. Have you ever thought about what you would do if you only had a few more days to live? Or how you would maintain your hope in the midst of such a devastating diagnosis? My husband and I faced a similar situation when he was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer and were told to get our affairs in order because he was not expected to live. I remember during that time that it really caused me to reassess how I would live each day, not knowing if it was our last. Today we are going to talk to Robin and see what impact that devastating news had on her and how her life is different for it today. Quotables from the episode: I’m not that I'm anything special but my Savior is.  God, thank you for this gift of a new day. I've done nothing to deserve it. This has been just a pure gift on your part. It's easy to approach God like he's a vending machine. I want this and this and this and this. But God wants us to participate with him. Scripture References: James 1:2-4 says dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy for you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow for when your endurance is fully developed. You will be perfect and complete needing nothing Romans 8:28 God works all things together for good. Hebrews 13:5, where I will never leave you nor forsake you. Matthew 28:20 “… And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Luke 12:4-7 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. … Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” 2 Corinthians 1:4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.  Recommended Resources: God’s Best During Your Worst by Robin Luftig Free Download: How To Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Social Media Links for Host and Guest: Connect with Robin Luftig: Website / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: Order Book Breaking Anxiety’s Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails  /  Website  /  Blog  /  Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson)  /  LinkedIn  /  Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube / Podcast Guest: Be grateful in everything--even the bumpy rides ... is Robin Luftig's mantra while either writing for non-fiction readers or speaking to audiences on healing after tragedy.
