In today's episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, our host Peter Winick is joined by Bill Sherman, co-host and COO of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Dr. AJ Marsden, an organizational psychologist and statistician, Josh Bernoff, author of Build a Better Business Book, Marissa Eigenbrood, President of Smith Publicity, Inc., Alison Schwartz, COO of Gotham Ghostwriters, and Naren Aryal of Amplify Publishing Group. They discuss the findings of their recent research into the Return on Investment of publishing a business book. In today's presentation we will have a first look at the data that was gathered from hundreds of authors about their experiences getting published, the expenses incurred, and the results the book had on their business. These authors were reached through not only the friends and colleagues at Thought Leadership Leverage but those from many supporting sponsors such as Greenleaf Book Group, Marshall Goldsmith 100 Coaches, Page Two Books, and Zilker Media to name a few. Before the research could even begin we had to ask the questions "What is ROI?  How can you measure it?  How much does an author spend? What is the effect of different publishing models?  And what type of returns do authors see? In answering these questions we explore what the data tells us about the three different publishing models (Traditional, Hybrid, and Self Publishing), the role RP and Ghostwriters can play in the success of each. We also investigate the hard and soft costs involved in writing a book and what the returns could look like.  While many expect the sales of the book to account for much of their profit, we learn how using the book as a key part of a platform and gateway to other parts of the business is where real impact can be found. More questions will be asked and answered in the white paper that will be released in September as we continue to pour over the data. A lot of thought leaders have written books, eager to get their insights out into the world. Yet many start the task without having a well-defined plan for what comes next!   Our guest today has literally written the book on writing thought leadership books! “Build a Better Business Book: How to Plan, Write and Promote a Book That Matters” is the work of the amazing Josh Bernoff, and we can't think of a better person to help nonfiction authors succeed. In order to help authors find success, they first have to understand what that means to them. Josh explains how success can look differently to each author and often is unrelated to the quantity of books sold.  Success can take the form of launching a speaking career, generating leads, or purely having a book that makes you the authority in your field. Once you know what sort of success you want, you'll need to plan beyond the book. Josh shares how many authors don't look beyond the launch of their book and become disappointed when nothing happens. However, those that properly promote their book, and have scalable plans in place for after the book is launched, can take their business to the next level. If you have an idea for a book, but you're not sure if it checks the boxes of "big, right, and new," then this episode will guide you on your journey. Three Key Takeaways: ·         For authors the success of a book is typically not measured in sales but in the additional business generated from the book. ·         Before you publish a book have a plan to define yourself beyond the book. ·         Tradition, hybrid, and self-publishing all have pros and cons.  You have to understand the needs of your book to find the right fit.

Build a Better Business Book: How to Plan, Write, and Promote a Book That Matters. A Comprehensive Guide for Authors by Josh Bernoff About the Book: Your brain burns with a powerful idea worth sharing. Could writing a business book spread that idea, create real change, and launch your career on the path to visibility and influence? Definitely. But don't start by piling up words. Instead, focus on the story. What urgent problem does your reader face? How can they solve it? And what journey must your readers take as you guide them from confusion to understanding, action, and success? Build a Better Business Book is the first accessible and comprehensive guide for authors who want to create impact. Josh Bernoff, a bestselling author, veteran editor, and insightful writing coach with decades of experience on 45 successful book projects, explains the systematic way to refine your idea and then research, write, publish, and promote a book that matters. Learn how to: Build your book not just from ideas but from people and their compelling stories — and how you can research and tell those stories. Write a first chapter that creates powerful motivation by emotionally connecting with readers. Select among the three major publishing models — traditional, self-publishing, and “hybrid” — on the axes of speed, cost, and influence. Plan your book as a project, then efficiently execute that plan with a low-stress, high-potency tool: the fat outline. Structure chapters that no reader can put down. Collaborate with coauthors, editors, and ghostwriters without excessive bloodshed. Promote your book to maximize your sales, revenue, and influence. Josh Bernoff's book projects have generated over $20 million for their authors. This guide includes the results of an extensive author survey and secrets from interviews with successful business authors like Jay Baer, Laura Gassner Otting, Phil M. Jones, Joe Pulizzi, and Scott Stratten. Don't waste valuable energy without accomplishing your goals. Construct your business book as a compelling story, and you won't just get your words in print. You'll create change in the minds of your readers. And that is the first step to making a meaningful impact on the world. From time to time people find out in conversation that I'm a published author. It's a monicker and fact that sits in my social media bios and certainly something I say proudly on my website and such, but it's not something that typically comes up on conversation. When it does, I get asked a lot of questions about it. Writing a book certainly had a big impact on my professional credibility and personal brand. Though anyone with an idea and the Internet, and maybe a little bit of money, can self-publish, all three of my books have been with legit, business publishing houses. For Winfluence, I even had an agent to help me shop the book around. As an aside, I love the sound of saying, “My agent will get back to you,” and having one sounds like a big deal. I love ya, Gary, but in reality, it's not as big of a deal as you might think. It's like having a real estate agent for your ideas. Nonetheless, people are curious about writing books. Content creators should be. For the influencer types out there, writing a book takes you to a new level of legitimacy and credibility. If you're not an influencer but still want to write a book, the hard truth is you're going to need an audience to market it to if you want a publisher to pay attention to your idea.  All those nuances of writing books, or at least business books, stuck in Josh Bernoff's crawl, as they say where I'm from. Josh has three published titles to his name including the groundbreaking book Groundswell he co-authored with Charlene Li. But he's collaborated on, ghost written or been involved with 45 non-fiction book projects.  His latest is a new how-to guide that cuts through the fantasy and makes writing a book a very practical thing. It's called Build a Better Business Book: How to Plan, Write and Promote a Book That Matters. Sounds a little like the advice we got from Jay Acunzo recently on the show, right? Josh is here today to share his comprehensive guide for authors to help you write a better book. Or write your first one in a better way. We're going to dig into whether or not you should be an author, how to be a good one and where books fall into the schema of influence success for creators and brands.  This episode of Winfluence is presented by CIPIO.ai. We live in an age where everything needs to be fast, easy, and in high volume. I've seen people say, “I'm going to write 8 books this year.” Josh Bernoff thinks that's a load of crap. See, if you want to write a good book, just like anything of quality, you need to spend time on it. Josh's new book, Build a Better Business Book, is a master class on how to do that. And today, he's giving us the best parts of that book. In the PRO show, things get real as we talk more about the charlatans of writing, as well as ghostwriting.Top Takeaways To write a good book, your idea has to be big, right, and new. This will make it distinguishable from everything else, and increase your impact and influence.  A good business book consists of two things: answers to reader questions, and case studies. Your book is nothing if you don't have case studies to back up your claim. Are you a planner, or a panter? Panters write by the seat of their pants, which creates a long, rambling, incoherent book. Planners start with what Josh calls a “fat outline,” so they know the story they're telling before they ever put pen to page. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of When, Drive, and To Sell Is Human ENDORSED BY MORE THAN 50 SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS AUTHORS Your brain burns with a powerful idea worth sharing. Could writing a business book spread that idea, create real change, and launch your career on the path to visibility and influence? Definitely. But don't start by piling up words. Instead focus on the story. What urgent problem does your reader face? How can they solve it? And what journey must your reader take as you guide them from confusion to understanding, action, and success? Plan your book as a project, then efficiently execute on that plan with a low-stress, high potency tool: the fat outline. Structure chapters that no reader can put down. Collaborate with coauthors, editors, and ghost writers without excessive bloodshed. Promote your book to maximize your sales, revenue, and influence. Josh Bernoff's book projects have generated over $20 million for their authors. This guide includes results of an extensive author survey and secrets from interviews with successful business authors like Jay Baer, Laura Gassner Otting, Phil M. Charlene Li is renowned as a strategic thinker. She helps leaders and organizations thrive with disruption as an Author, Speaker, Advisor and Board Member. She has worked with dozens of companies such as IBM, Oracle, 3M, Adobe, Cisco, Dell, Intel, and Microsoft, just to name a few. She has authored six books, the most recent titled: The Disruption Mindset – Why Some Organizations Transform, While Others Fail.  She is prolific at sharing content through her LinkedIn live streams, as well as on Twitter and Clubhouse sharing her thought leadership on the disruption mindset.   On this episode, Charlene discusses disruption in business, starting with what it is, why it is important for leaders to embrace it and her recommendations to creating stronger employee relationships within the disruption model.   What is Disruption and Why it Matters Charlene grew up in Detroit where she was the only person of color in her early school years. Her presence alone was a disruption which prepared her mindset to look at mainstream principles through a different lens. She looks at the rapid evolution of technology as an opportunity for companies to thrive. In other words, she helps business leaders look at change and disruption as great opportunities for growth.   Charlene's first book is the critically acclaimed Groundswell which published in 2008 when social media was in its early days. In this book, Charlene and her co-author Josh Bernoff encouraged business leaders to embrace the disruption of social media as an opportunity to engage and communicate with their audience. She was frequently asked by leaders why do some companies thrive in disruption and others fail? So, she set out to conduct research to learn what's different about those companies who thrive in disruption over and over again.   The Disruption Mindset For a company to thrive in disruption, there must be a vision for what the future looks like. It begins with leadership, but the employees must catch the vision and trust leadership in the company's commitment and ability to embrace the disruption to thrive. Disruption will take people out of their comfort zone. Employees must trust their leaders to thrive in the midst of disruption. Leaders must have a plan to bring employees with them willingly on the disruption journey to a new future.   What it Takes to Create Stronger Employee Relationships.  Charlene identifies three strategies for creating strong employee relationships to enable the disruption mindset to thrive across the organization. They are:  -       Integrity -       Agency -       Openness  Integrity Leaders who do what they say they're going to do with consistency between action and messaging operate with integrity. Employees know the difference between empty promises and actions that live out the company's values. Leaders should communicate the reason for a different future, how the company needs to get there and how each employee is integral to getting there along with why it's valuable to the employee. Beyond communication, leaders must live it every day to be recognized for integrity. The three strategies for building long term, sustained employee relationships start with integrity, which leads to trust.   Agency Agency means that employees believe in the mission and work hard to achieve the strategies defined by leadership. When agency is present, employees behave like owners in the business with accountability for their actions because they genuinely care. They are bought into the vision.     Openness This is the simple concept that nothing is hidden. That everything that isn't considered company confidential is out in the open and available for discussion. No question is off the table.   Charlene points out that these three strategies are intermixed together to define the relationship between leaders and employees in the disruption mindset.  How to Implement Integrity, Agency, Openness Charlene points out that leaders must be committed to building relationships with employees starting with defining what the relationship looks like. Leaders should document the attributes of their desired relationship with their teams as the starting point in this process.  At iQor, we deploy a weekly Mood-o-Meter survey to our contact center agents to measure their current mood. Anyone who scores low for more than one week in a row gets contacted by a skip-level manager to set up a meeting. These meetings allow the employee to discuss what's on their mind. The relationship and trust built in these skip-level meetings are an example of our attempt at integrity, agency and openness.     Borrow Best Practices from the Marketing Department Your marketing team is adept at listening and communicating with customers. Employers should adapt some of these marketing practices to likewise listen and engage with employees in relationship building, treating them with the same care as customers are treated. A Long Term View of the Employee Relationship In the digital age, the lines are blurred between an employee's life outside of work and at work. Employers should embrace the employee's whole self, including their passion and dreams. By providing a work environment that allows employees to thrive as a person, working toward their long-term dreams with the support of their employer, the relationship between employer and employee is strengthened.   Infusing Integrity, Agency and Openness into Employee Relationships Imagine speaking with an employee about their last day at your company on their first day at your company. Strong relationships are built if we talk openly with employees about their aspirations and offer support to help them achieve their dreams. In return, the employee is more likely to have a strong relationship with their employer while they work there. Additionally, we can ask and receive cooperation to provide more than two weeks' notice and help in hiring and training a replacement. This level of relationship lives beyond current employment and breeds agency among employees.  What Charlene Does for Fun Charlene has a cat named Cosmo. She has trained him to do tricks, which he is motivated to do with treats. She says he performs about a dozen tricks such as jump through hoops and playing with cups and balls. Charlene loves dogs but with her busy travel schedule, a cat is purrfect for her lifestyle.   Learn more about Charlene's book and other resources at her website.   Learn more about iQor digital customer experience capabilities.  Read the blog post here. In this episode of Masters of Community, we speak with Marius Ciortea, Chief Community Officer at IBM. Marius leads the community strategy of forming an engaging brand presence to interact with their community of existing customers. He will be discussing how to share best practices and use common terminology to expand the experience beyond the company brand and fuel the fireside chat. Who is this episode for? B2B, Successful Brands, Mature Organizations, Scaling, Revitalizing Three key takeaways: 1. IBM's Community Strategy: Companies should value customers above everything else. IBM's community shift aims to keep the customers satisfied, engaged, and loyal to the brand 2. Developing a Cohesive Community Experience: 1. Companies need to focus more on the end-users that influence the buying decision. 2. Create various points of communication to bring the community closer and to interact directly with individuals. 3. Focus on clearly defining the purpose and the strategy of the organization 3. Showing the Scale and Investing in a Community Brand: Community managers should feel good about the tools available to drive scale and take a more nurturing stance in their role. Companies from the same community influence each other. If different organizations create positive experiences for the users, they will become engaged and active within the community. Notable Quotes: 1. “I never fully understood why communities were relegated to a community manager role in the world of social media. I don't want to knock social media, but you are talking to everyone, and you don't know the impact that you're having. When you're talking in a community, especially a community of customers, you're talking to your customers. I believe smart companies should value the customers above everything else. Therefore, you should not let that conversation live with a junior intern.” 2. “I feel like the real influencers are the guys that actually use your software in and day out. If you get those internal users to be your advocates, signing the check will be a no-brainer for the decision-makers. The true influencers are inside the company that is already using the product. So that is why I think companies need to focus on the users more because they are ultimately making the buying decision.” 3. “The purpose that I have is to create a place where customers can share their thoughts and learn from each other. Ultimately, if they share their experiences and learn from each other, they will do more with the products. And that is right, regardless of technology, language, product, or whatever it is that unifies all together.” Answers to rapid-fire questions: 1. If you could only have one kind of food for the rest of your life, what would that food be? Spaghetti Carbonara. 2. What's your favorite book to give or to recommend to people? Groundswell by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff. 3. What's a go-to community engagement, tactic, or conversation starter that you like to use in your communities? T-shirts and beer. Anytime people get together, get them a t-shirt, and if you can give them a beer, they will love you forever. 4. What's the weirdest community you've ever been a part of? My kid, who is 15, told me that he is sort of a community manager on a Minecraft community on this court. 5. What advice do you have for community professionals who want to become chief community officers one day? Be clear in what you're trying to achieve for your company. 6. How to break the silos? Interview your customers, ask them questions on how they feel being siloed. 7. How do you evaluate a platform to choose for your community? Be clear on your purpose and then match your or your community's capabilities to that purpose.

Today my guest is Charlene Li. Charlene is a graduate of Harvard and of Harvard Business School, she's been named one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company, and she's an expert in digital transformation and disruptive growth strategies. Charlene has just released a new book called, The Disruption Mindset: Why Some Organizations Transform Why Others Fail. Charlene is a founder of and a Senior Fellow at Altimeter, which is a Profit company. She is the author of five previous books including a New York Times bestseller, Open Leadership; and the co-author of the critically acclaimed book Groundswell. I love how she explains that we've been approaching disruption backwards. In my conversation with her, we talk about how companies make disruption their goal, but they believe that if they develop the right innovation, they will disrupt the markets forever and drive the kind of growth worthy of what their Board of Directors wants. But, as Charlene explains to me that it's not how disruption works. Disruption doesn't create growth. Instead she talks about how growth creates disruption. I love how she hits it across the head when she says, growth is hard. She's not mincing words here. Disruptive growth is exponentially harder. It requires companies to make tough decisions in the face of daunting uncertainties and answer questions like, ‘should we bet our company's future on the next generation customers or today's reliable ones? Should we abandon our current business model for an entirely new one? Making these bold changes demands leadership and often massive cultural transformation. We talk about leadership, and that in this type of disruptive companies, strategy trumps everything and how we need to meet the future needs of our customers. That leadership requires a movement to drive and sustain. It requires consistency. You can't whiffle-waffle as a leader. She talks about the consistency of the best transformation leaders and culture, of course, culture. We talk about culture, something she calls flux culture. Also, we discuss her concept of a dashboard. Many of you are digital leaders, but what do your dashboards look like? Charlene gets into specifics on what a true disruptive organization should have in there... the entire company is looking at it as it relates to their dashboard. You're going to love the envisioning exercise we talk about with envisioning your future customer. I love to speak with book authors like Charlene because we're taking 30 years’ worth of meeting some of the best, most transformative conversations and experiences, and distilling it into a book and a conversation. Charlene and I discuss ten powerful stories, concepts, ideas and strategies from this amazing book. Here are some of things that you will learn in this podcast episode. Specific leadership strategies that Jeff Bezos deploys at Amazon which allows him to build and scale an enormous company. The importance of a flux culture and its positive impact in a disruptive company. An amazing example of envisioning future customers. How one must lead moving forward in times of exponential change. The power of Dashboards in disruptive and innovative companies. The super power of disruption leaders to instill hope and confidence. Disruption doesn’t create growth. Growth creates disruption. Innovative companies vs. disruptive companies What is the role of the CIO – moving forward? Breakthrough growth shifts the balance of power and of established relationships. Josh Bernoff is the author of a stellar book called Writing Without Bullshit: Boost Your Career by Saying What You Mean. The book is focused on making everyone a better writer in business. Most importantly, due to Josh's background in the technology sector, he has a lot of history with an industry that produces arguably the most jargon, poorly written emails, blog posts, and messaging of any business sector.  This episode centers on different examples of how people can improve their business writing, report writing, and emails, alongside many other great writing topics. In This Episode Josh's background and his first insights into useful, clear writing. On meaningless platitudes. The importance of strong titles and file names. How to write a strong executive summary. How to craft a great email. Why paragraphs are the worst. How we got to the current standard of communication in our professional lives. What the meaning ratio means when writing great content. Why shortening the length of your document is a good idea. On the passive voice. An approach for narrowing down your usage of jargon.

There are books, articles, podcasts, seminars, speeches and many gurus all claiming to know the magical steps to achieving high performance in your career. So, who’s right? What are you supposed to believe? Marc Effron, author of the book 8 Steps to High Performance https://amzn.to/2OsZqso has taken a look at a lot of the material and separated the fluff from the science. Listen as he explains what really works if you want to really excel in your career. Ever wondered whether or not you should buy a new car if your old car works just fine? Since cars last much longer than a generation or two ago, a lot of drivers struggle with the decision to buy a new car. If you are one of them, you should listen as I discuss this topic. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/the-average-american-car-is-a-record-115-years-old/ar-AAdGzIGWhen you think about it, you write a lot. 076: Josh Bernoff - Cut The BS Out of Your Language

Scaling Up Business Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2017 32:49

This week it’s time to cut the BS out of your writing, your language, and your business. No one wants to hear lies! Most business writing and the way executives talk is just filled with BS and people are just sick of it. It’s time to stop now!   Josh Bernoff has been a professional writer since 1982 and is the author of Without Bullshit. Also, for 20 years, he was at Forrester Research, where he wrote and edited reports on the future of technology. He was also a speaker at the Gazelle’s Growth Summit this year.   While working at Forrester, Josh would often get briefs and press releases from hundreds of Tech startups, but he noticed that most of the communication he received was BS. Of all the press releases he received, only .02% of all the words in there had any real meaning to Josh. That’s a lot of waste.   So, when Josh left Forrester, he wanted to teach people how to get rid of the bullshit and get straight to the point. People use jargon because somewhere in their head they think everybody uses this terminology. However, when you use jargon, you are actually more likely to alienate the people you’re trying to connect with, your customer.   People who are used to pitching and promoting are used to using certain words like ‘widely successful,’ ‘great,’ and ‘powerful’ to drive home that big point they’re trying to make, but to the outside world, it looks like complete BS. In fact, the more of these overexaggerated words you use, the less credible you look.   Instead of being super intense and using these big empty words and jargon that no one understands, you can take lessons from famous speechwriters who would often open the speech or conversation with a proactive fact. Bill likes to lead with, “One in four of you will not complete this program, statistically speaking.” That immediately got the attention and the engagement of the entire room.   People’s attention spans are very short. Based on a survey Josh conducted for his book, people spend a total of 46 hours a week reading and writing for their work, more than a full-time job, so anything you have to say to them, it had better be eye-catching and important.   When you need to write an important memo or message to your team, then you will need to think of these four things before you craft it. The first thing is, who will be reading this? Second, what’s the objective? What change are you trying to make? Third, what action should the reader take? And fourth, what kind of impression would you like your reader to be left with about you? Josh uses the ROAM acronym to help him remember this: Readers, Objective, Action, iMpressions.   Interview Links: Withoutbullshit.com   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshops: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. How to Write Episode Titles That Attract New Listeners

The title of your podcast episode is important because it is what's going to convince a brand new listener to check out your show. Word of mouth recommendations are another way to get new listeners, but if someone hears about your podcast from a friend, they are still going to go look at the titles of your episodes which will help them decide if it's a show they'd be interested in.Your title is a chance to convince someone who's never heard of you to listen to your episode. Here's the cold truth: People only care about what your podcast does for them. So what will your podcast do for your listener? This is one of the questions your title should answer. In today's episode, I'm going to talk about what makes a good title, what makes a less than ideal title, and I'm going to share some tips to help you write better titles.(After the show, I answered questions about titles and also a couple great questions about how to get into editing podcasts and finding work as a podcast editor, and where to find help with branding and logo design for your podcast.)Key Takeaways:If you don’t have a large following, using inside jokes or funny things you say in an episode as titles will prevent you from getting new listeners, so be careful.Your title should be memorable and it should give an idea of what the episode is about. It should be easy to say and not embarrassing or problematic for someone to say aloud to their friends.Sometimes a simple title can be just as effective as a clever title.Ask yourself if your title is something your audience would search for on Google. Ask yourself, “Would I click on this title if it was on someone else’s site?”According to Josh Bernoff, the title and first few sentences of a blog post should:Intrigue the readerPromise what’s coming, accuratelyIncorporate a clever or counter-intuitive turn of phraseBe natural and invitingAvoid click-bait (Click-bait means attracting clicks with false promises)Use a few keywords that will attract searchesDon't include your show title or episode number in your episode's title. That information will be displayed close-by in whatever app or directory people are using to listen to your show, so it's redundant to include the title of your show or the episode number in the episode title.---I was talking with Sean yesterday and I sent him a couple ideas I had for a title for this episode. He asked me three questions in response:* Why does it matter?* What does writing a better title do for me? * Why does the right title for my podcast matter?I told him that I thought that writing better titles would bring new listeners to the podcast by catching their attention, and also through search engine results.I told him that I thought that a good title would help the content stand out in an overwhelming amount of content that people see every day.His response was: “How to Write Episode Titles That Attract New Listeners.”I was pretty impressed (he’s good at writing titles). I asked him if he had some tips about writing titles that he’d like to share with my listeners. He responded with three things, the first two of which are questions that your title should answer for your listener. “What’s in it for me?” “Tell me why should I care about this?” “Speak to the desires I already have, but deliver what I need to know.”What Are Some Things That Make an Episode Title Bad?1. If the title doesn’t give the listener any idea about what the episode is about.2. If your title is too click-baity. This might work for people who are just casually browsing, but I’d argue that titles that are pure click-bait are going to turn off the smart people in your audience. Avoid them. 3. If the title is too generic, or exactly the same as something else that is more popular. For example, if you call your podcast episode “Top Gun”, I’d doubt that your episode is ever going to show up in search engine results. 4. If the title is something that your audience will not be interested in. If you have a show about web design and you have a title like “How to Effectively Clean Your Garage on the Weekends”, most of your audience may skip that episode.Examples of Less Than Ideal Podcast Episode TitlesI have to start off by saying that the first few on this list are from a show that I really enjoy, Systematic. The host, Brett Terpstra, is someone I consider a friend and a great human being. That being said, some of his titles are a little less than ideal. For example:(Systematic 135) Top of the Rollercoaster with Kelly Guimontand (Systematic 131) One-Way Ticket with Evan LovelyThese titles just don’t tell me anything about the episode, so I'm going to keep browsing through the episode list in my podcast app for something more interesting. (Sorry Brett! You're still awesome.)Back to Work is another example of a show that has less than ideal episode titles. I’m a big fan of Back to Work, but the titles do nothing to explain to new listeners what the show is about. They are all inside jokes for the people listening to the show. This probably helps create a deeper connection with those listening live and voting on the titles, but it doesn’t help with SEO.The hosts of the show (Dan Benjamin and Merlin Mann) can do this because they both already have large followings. If you don’t have a large following, using inside jokes or funny things you say in an episode as titles may prevent you from getting new listeners, so be careful.Another show that I really like is the Mac Power Users podcast. I’ve learned a ton of great things from this show, but some of their titles could be better. Example:(Mac Power Users 247) The Onslaught Revisited. What does that mean? Listeners of the show might know what this means, but I bet you don’t.If you read the description, you’ll see they are talking about RSS readers and the overwhelming amount of content we have coming at us all the time. The title itself doesn’t give that any indication of that, though.Alright. I’m going to put myself in the hot seat here. (The Podcast Dude 13) How to Choose the Right Format for Your PodcastI don’t think it was a great title. It doesn’t tell my listeners why the episode topic is important, and the word “format” is too vague: Format could mean many different things. It’s too late to change now, but I’ll work on coming up with better titles in the future. What Makes a Good Podcast Episode Title?Over the past week, I did some research about writing titles. Here’s what I found. A great title grabs your reader’s attention. Garrett Mickley gave a great example in the chat from a show that I’ve seen a few episodes of, Parks & Rec: “Bobby Newport’s Never Had a Real Job in His Life.” Sensationalism works.Kyle Arbuckle gave an example: “This Guy Invented a Solution to a Problem That Has Been Around for Over 100 Years.”That’s interesting, right? What is the problem? What is the solution?Your title should be memorable, interesting, and it should give an idea of what the episode is about. It should be easy to say and not embarrassing or problematic for someone to say aloud to their friends. You should ask yourself:* Would someone type this into a Google search? * What is the most important or interesting thing about this episode? * What is my audience interested in?How to Write Titles for InterviewsIf you do interviews, you should include a takeaway in the title, and not just the name of the person you interviewed. If the person you’ve interviewed is famous enough, you may not have to do much more than put their name in the episode title, but if you can augment their name with a takeaway from the episode, that’s even better.Use Title Case When Writing TitlesWhen writing a name or a title, it is a common convention to only use capital letters to start the principal words. This is called title case. The principal words in a title are all the words which are not:* Articles (a, an, the)* Conjunctions (e.g., and, but, or), or * Prepositions (e.g., on, in, with)Here’s a link to an article about how to write title case. Get familiar and check out titlecase.com if you need additional help.Examples of Good Podcast Episode Titles(The seanwes Podcast) Finding Your PassionThis is a great title, because we all struggle with finding our passion. Sean’s audience especially, because Sean’s thing is helping people make a living with their passion. How to Self Promote Without Feeling Like a LoserIf you’ve ever created something and then tried to promote it to strangers, you’ve probably worried about annoying someone. This title promises to teach you how to promote your thing, which is something a lot of people want to know how to do.(The Systematic Podcast) Procrastinate on Purpose with Rory VadenSince Systematic is a show for people interested in work and productivity, I’m sure nearly everyone in the audience has struggled with procrastination. This is a title that will catch their eye because it’s an interesting concept. Who has ever heard of procrastinating on purpose?(Mac Power Users) Workflows with John GruberThis is a good combination of a famous person and something the hosts of the Mac Power Users know that their audience is interested in—workflows. Geeks love hearing how other people get their work done.A few other examples of great titles from Mac Power Users:The Email Problem and Task ManagementTask Management is a simple title, but it works, because managing to-do lists is something a lot of people struggle with.I’m going to use my podcast as an example again:Introduction to Recording AudioAccording to iTunes, this is my most popular episode. My guess is that it’s my most popular episode because a lot of people Google search “Introduction to Recording Audio”.Even though there’s nothing clever or attention grabbing about that title, it still works because it’s something a lot of people are interested in learning and I’ve used a phrase that they might type into Google.Sometimes a simple title can be just as effective as a clever title. There’s a blog that I really enjoy called Without Bullshit. The author of this blog, Josh Bernoff, is a very good writer. His titles are all pretty fantastic, but this one really stood out to me:Please Stop French-Kissing Your Site VisitorsThat article is about website marketing and the pop-ups that so many sites use. I don’t like popups, and neither does the author.I recommend checking out his site but especially his article:How to start a blog post: Can you intrigue me in 50 words?Josh says: The title and first few sentences of a blog post should:Intrigue the readerPromise what’s coming, accuratelyIncorporate a clever or counterintuitive turn of phraseBe natural and invitingAvoid clickbait (Clickbait means attracting clicks with false promises)Use a few keywords that will attract searchesAdditional Tips for Creating Better TitlesGoogle your title ideas.See what else is out there. You might find some good information to include in your post or episode. Ask yourself if your title is something your audience would search for on Google. Ask yourself, “Would I click on this title if it was on someone else’s site?”Brainstorm 10-15 titles. This will give your creative muscle a workout. Eliminate the terrible ones when you’re done.Ask a trusted friend for feedback about your titles.I’m lucky to have a good friend like Sean to ask about my podcast titles, but I’ve also got a lot of other friends that are willing to give me feedback and help me brainstorm. Finally: Don't include your show title or episode number in your episode's title. That information will be displayed close-by in whatever app or directory people are using to listen to your show, so it's redundant to include the title of your show or the episode number in the episode title.Q&A:Noah Camp asked: How should you title a subject that seems to have been covered a thousand times before? If you can put a unique spin on it, that’s great. But keep in mind that someone is born everyday who hasn’t heard Merlin Mann make the Flintstones joke. What I mean is that just because you are familiar with a topic doesn’t mean other people are. It’s better to write a straightforward title that really communicates what your episode (or blog post) is about rather than try to do something unique or crazy.Don’t let coming up with the perfect title keep you from publishing something.Zach Simms asked: I am a freshman in college and I am planning to major in a field of business, right now finance. If I am interested in doing freelance work as an audio editor, how would you suggest I go about learning enough to be hirable? At the moment I have plans to eventually start my own company or move out east and work for a bank, but the more I learn about podcasts, the more I am interested in them and the more I want to learn. During college I wouldn’t mind possibly doing some work on the side as an audio editor and that’s how that question came up. Another question I have is how does the pay look for the average podcast/ audio editor? I want to live a dapper lifestyle making 250k+/year and that’s why I am swayed towards the finance and asset management industry. I’m just curious how much podcasters and audio editors make.First, congrats on going to college and having big dreams! If you’re interested in learning audio post production and podcast editing, get some professional software, learn it, and start studying post production. Learn about recording, editing, mixing and mastering, EQ, compression, and noise removal. Learn how to write good show notes. Learn Markdown. You’ll also need to learn business things like how to setup a website and market your skills, how to work with clients, and how much to charge. My advice for you is focus first on doing something that you really enjoy. I really enjoy working with people and helping people make things. Money isn’t quite as important to me. If you enjoy making money, that’s fine. Figure out the best way to do that.I don’t know that anyone makes 250,000/year editing podcasts. I certainly didn’t, I was making closer to $50,000.I googled “salary for audio engineer” and got results from a few websites that said between 43k and 90k. Salary will also depend on skill level and location. There are other perks to my job besides money: Being able to work remotely, for example. Setting my own hours. Freedom to travel when I want. It’s important to think about what kind of work you love doing and what’s important to you. If you don’t know what kind of work you love, you’ll need to spend some time trying different things to figure that out. You’ll eventually find that you like certain kinds of work better than others. Now, to make $250k/year, you might have to work 70+ hours a week. If you do, you won’t have much time to spend that money. You won’t have much time to do anything else but work, really. I know because I’ve done 70 hours a week before. It’s brutal.Focus on developing valuable skills and get good at doing something that's in high demand. Once you have unqiue and valuable skills, you'll have more leverage over your work and pay, and you'll enjoy your work more.Life is so much better if you can do work you really enjoy. I don’t know how you guys felt about math class in school, but I always hated it. It was so boring to me. I wanted to be outside exploring or reading books. To me, that’s the difference between work I love and work I just do for money.Oliver asked: Do you have any recommendations for podcast art/logo resources?Let me start by saying that I’m not a professional designer, so take what I say with a grain of salt. It’s tempting to focus on just a logo, or just a website (one thing at a time), but you really need to think about the overall branding of your show. There needs to be consistency in fonts and colors that you use in your website and logo. I happen to know that Oliver is starting a podcast about Healthcare IT, so he needs design that communicates that to his audience. The design should give the audience visual cues about what the show is about, and who it’s for. Colors and fonts will play a big role here. Think about the design that you see in both the tech world and the healthcare world; it’s clean, professional, modern, and techie. There are colors and fonts that we associate with those things. If your design is playful or retro, you might confuse your audience. Just like the 80’s have a very distinctive look (bright neon colors), so does healthcare and technology.I talked about this in Episode 6, so go check that out, but if you can afford a good designer, it’s a great investment if you are dedicated to doing your podcast for awhile. If podcasting is something you’re just trying out to see if you like it, you may want to put together something simple yourself or hire an affordable or less experienced designer from a website like Craigslist, 99Designs or fiverr. If you want to invest in a professional designer, check out Dribbble or Behance. Good designers are not cheap (My guess is that you’ll be investing four to five figures for their services), but they are a good investment because they will ask the right questions and provide you with the best solution. An amateur designer will try to ask what you like, which is the wrong question. The design for your artwork and website needs to communicate something about your show to your audience. It’s not just about making something look pretty.Cool Stuff to Check Out:Recommended Gear: https://kit.com/thepodcastdudePodcast: https://thepodcastdude.simplecast.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/thepodcastdudeYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/c/thepodcastdudeSuccessful Podcasting: http://successfulpodcasting.comSimplecast Blog: http://blog.simplecast.com/
