In this Podcast, Culden Kamea asks why ticket prices to the Super Rugby Pacific game between the Fijian Drua and the Highlanders are so high? I know that I have spoken about this in an earlier podcast, but after flicking TV channels between the HSBC Singapore 7s and another channel featuring the Fijian Drua interim CEO Brian Thorburn last night, I've got even more questions to ask about the very high ticket prices. Look don't get me wrong, I'm a certified rugby nut for sure, and watching live rugby games featuring top Fiji teams in 7s or XVs is my passion and something I have been reporting, commentating on and podcasting now for decades – maybe I'm just another old fart? Anyway, what got up my nose was, how powerful, arrogant or cheeky is this interim CEO that he can repeat his threat reported in the Fiji Sun last week that if we locals don't start buying tickets to the Fijian Drua versus Highlanders game on 30th April then he will delay the TV broadcasting of the game by two hours – can he really do that? What about the local TV company that holds the free-to-air live broadcast rights – MaiTV? What about the local TV company that holds the live pay-per-view rights – Digicel? What about all us SKY subscribers who have paid to watch this game and others live? What about the rest of our country – will they all suffer a two hour delayed broadcast just because the interim CEO of the Fijian Drua says so? While the interim-CEO was making this threat in a Fiji flag-blue Fijian Drua Bula shirt with a big Bula smile- (like a true blue Aussie tourist I thought), he emphasized that we locals need to change our ways and don't leave things to the last minute, but buy our tickets to the game early because we cannot have only 5000 or 10,000 people there, we needed to show the world a full house! The interim-Fijian Drua CEO further said that these ticket prices - $30 for Adults on the grass embankment, $75 for the cement embankment and between $150 and $185 for the grandstand were lower than the ticket prices for Super Rugby Pacific games in 2019 and 2020. H E L L O er we have had a minor hiccup with a pandemic sweep through our country since then, killing over a thousand people, causing tens of thousands to lose their jobs and smashing our economy for six! What he is so conveniently goose-stepping better than David Campese is that ticket prices for all the other Super Rugby Pacific games in Australia and New Zealand are no more than $30 for grandstand seats – so why $75 to $185 here in Fiji. Finally, the interim Fijian Drua CEO Brian Thorburn also admitted (what is so clear to see on TV) that in all their “home games” in Australia so far this season, they had only sold 1200 tickets! That's right, only 1200 tickets sold so far in 3 home games in Australia at F$40 say and he wants us locals here in Fiji, to rush out and buy 10,000 tickets @ F$75 - $185 or he'll block the TV broadcast? No thanks, as we always do in Suva – check the weather on the day and then maybe if it's not going to rain, just maybe we'll buy a ticket to that game last minute- we're not stupid. Ok so there I am switching back to the HSBC Singapore 7s and you know what the honest to goodness truth really is interim CEO, when you take all the emotions out of us supporting the Fijian Drua with our heart and soul – they really aren't that good and what's more they're not getting any better! Our Fiji 7s team in Singapore – now that's how you get excited about supporting a team and buying tickets! For the TeivovoRugby.com Podcast – I'm Culden Kamea. In this Podcast, Culden Kamea unravels the answer to the question, “Why do Fijians play rugby like no one else in the world?” No other team in the world plays rugby quite like Fijians. Although there is an obvious overlap between how Fijians play rugby 7s and XVs, I am only focusing on the full XVs version of the game here. Take the Fijiana Drua for example, in this their first year of international exposure playing against Australian State teams in the Super W competition they have simply been too hot to handle – too fast, too tough, too fit – too hot alright! Whenever one of their players makes a half break, the swarming support play by up to five runners behind the ball carrier has been unstoppable. The Australian Womens teams simply have no answer. On Series #01 Episode #002, editor in chief Culden Kamea speaks on rugby player Amenoni Nasilasila and the rehabilitation scheme, the Yellow Ribbon Program. Nasilasila grew up in Namatakula, the famous town known for creating rugby union and league stars like Noa Nadruku who is his uncle,[2] Lote Tuqiri who is his cousin[2] and Nemani Nadolo. He played rugby league and was part of the Fiji Residents Rugby league side, a feeder for the Fiji Bati. He wanted a career in rugby league and waited for 3 years for offers but then switched to rugby union joining a top local 7's club, Ratu Filise.[2] He was spotted by then coach Ben Ryan who saw him playing in one of the local tournaments and included him in his extended side for the 2014 Gold Coast Sevens but an injury ruled him out on the eleventh hour.[3] He made his debut at the 2014 Dubai Sevens making his debut against France scoring a try in their 54-7 thrashing.[4] He did not make the Fiji side to the 2016 Olympic Games He also represented his provincial side, Navosa in the Skipper Cup playing at playmaker and halfback.[5] He captained the Fiji Barbarians 7's side top the SUDAmerica 7's in December 2016.[6] He was included by the new Fiji 7's coach, Gareth Baber for the 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series.[7] Nasilasila was selected as the 13th man for the first tournament, of the 2017–18 World Rugby Sevens Series, the 2017 Dubai Sevens but an injury to Waisea Nacuqu on Day One saw him getting selected for the main team and played very well and got praises from the coach after helping Fiji beat the Australia in the dying stages of their final pool game[8] and after Naququ failed to recover in time, he made the main team for the 2017 South Africa Sevens. His performance in that tournament saw him make the Dream Team for the first time as well as being named the DHL Impact Player of the Cape Town 7s.[9] ### Host Culden Kamea treats you to post-match and tournament reviews and analysis of XVs and 7s rugby games involving Fiji national teams both women and men, interviews and news.    #TEIVOVOFijiRugbyShow #TeivovoRugby #TeivovoDigital #rugby #rugby7s #FijiRugby #rugbyunion #rugbyleague #Raka #team #rugbytraining #sports #FRU #Fiji --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/teivovo-rugby/message

Eloise Blackwell was among the Black Ferns blindsided on Wednesday morning by the revelation their World Cup, scheduled to be held in New Zealand from September, is likely to be postponed by a year.Auckland-based Blackwell, the Black Ferns captain, was out running with flatmate and teammate Aleisha-Pearl Nelson when the pair paused at the top of a hill to read a message from team management that detailed World Rugby's recommendation for the pinnacle tournament to be postponed until next year."It did come as a bit of a shock when I saw the email come through," Blackwell, a physical education teacher, said."The first we heard of it was from our management followed by the Herald link so it was a bit of a bombshell and definitely unexpected, but we can't really assume they had any information on this happening. It's hit everybody pretty hard – everyone is feeling for each other."We were pretty devastated, but essentially nothing changes. I was upset for a couple of hours. Now it's the same goal, same grind, and we'll be working towards the same goal in 2022 if that's what's decided by the [World Rugby] board in a week."Veteran Black Ferns halfback Kendra Cocksedge had yet to process the recommendation to delay the tournament."Our focus right now as leaders in the side is to get around the girls and check in on each other. There's going to be a lot of mixed emotions in the side especially for the new, younger players."New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson indicated the prospect of bringing 12 teams – three of whom were yet to qualify - and over 700 people into a country with full managed isolation facilities was problematic. The fact many foreign teams have been unable to play for over a year formed another factor in the postponement recommendation."We're incredibly confident our team has done everything possible to make sure this tournament could have been a success," Robinson said. "We'll have to take a bit of stock now to step back and work through the disappointment in the immediate future and then build a plan for next year."We're committed to making sure the Black Ferns have a meaningful campaign this year."With the recommendation coming to a head at the start of this week, Robinson admitted some parties were left in the dark."We know they'll be disappointed but they were informed as early as we possibly could. We were working in tight timeframes with all of this," he said."World Rugby have done everything possible to communicate in a timely fashion but in the last little while there's been a need to get information out and there may well have been groups that felt they haven't got all the insights they would normally get."This year's World Cup was scheduled to be held in Auckland and Whangārei from September 18 to October 16. Robinson indicated the tournament would now start from October 15 next year at the same venues.Despite preparing for the past four years, and making significant sacrifices during summer training, Blackwell appreciated the predicament foreign teams faced in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic gripping the globe."I was speaking to a mate in Canada this morning and she hasn't played internationals since our game against the Barbarians at the end of 2019," Blackwell said."The reality of it is pretty real and down in New Zealand we're a little bit sheltered from what's actually happening on a bigger scale around the world. You can't expect them to bring 100 per cent of their capacity."One potential upside for the Black Ferns is they may have access to the full spectrum of sevens players, some of whom may not have backed up following their quest for gold at the scheduled Tokyo Olympics."A lot of those girls in the sevens have been involved in our XVs team. There's a lot of quality within their environment that we could definitely benefit from. If it is postponed until next year it will definitely create some friendly competition among players and positions."Cocksedge, the f...
