The ship navigated through the storm by following the lighthouse.船只循着灯塔在暴风雨中航行。rainbow /ˈreɪnboʊ/ n.(名词)彩虹;(比喻)希望与美好结局的象征A rainbow appeared in the sky after the rain stopped.雨停后天空出现了一道彩虹。Quote to learn for todayHe who sings in the storm will one day dance in the rainbow.——African Proverb翻译在风暴中歌唱的人,终将在彩虹下起舞。——非洲谚语更多卡卡老师分享公众号:卡卡课堂 卡卡老师微信:kakayingyu001送你一份卡卡老师学习大礼包,帮助你在英文学习路上少走弯路

Busie's father's sudden death 2 months before her graduation walk, changed her walk. She was to work for Citigroup and move back to Uganda. But she stayed and became a workaholic to deal with that trauma and thrust herself into entrepreneurship while working a 9-5pm job. As a result, she founded one of the first fashion tech companies which was then twice acquired.Another significant pivot was the birth of her 2nd child, who had severe food allergies. She was forced to move to remote working in 2012 as she was her daughter's primary caregiver. Busie left regular employment to become a stay at home mom then eventually a work from home mom. This moved her into consultancy as well as policy driven assignments such as board position, as she realized mom's careers suffer most and they are usually driven to make decisions which impact our families and the broader community. Busie realized, that we need more women at the policy tables. She has been fortunate to have doors open for others and believes also in amplifying others. She believes, if we light more candles we illuminate more light and there's an African Proverb which says "If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far, go together. Let's continue to build and amplify!!She reflects on what she has learned, we need to be anchored by a strong ecosystem, and that it's imperative that we intentionally and deliberately harness positive relationships. That's why some people bounce back more easily from adversity than others. Who you surround yourself matters. It's like a charging bank, a reserved you may tap into because of one's investment.A serial entrepreneur widely recognised for her impact leadership, Busie Matsiko-Andan is an award-winning global strategist and Board Trustee who has held positions on Wall Street at Smith Barney, Oppenheimer & Co and Citibank. She currently advises multilaterals like the African Union, Afreximbank, the Africa Renaissance and Diaspora Network, Lalela Project, and the Heritage and Cultural Society of Africa on private-sector scaling and development. As a global strategist and CEO of Pont Global, Busie has been instrumental in successfully scaling and growing companies and organizations. She is also the Executive Director of The Africa Future Summit which brings together investors and leaders in technology, entrepreneurship, and politics to address the challenges that affect Africa's future. She is also the first black woman trustee of Berkeley College, in the US. Busie was the founder of one of the first fashion technology companies, Fashion Indie, and also created RESET, a platform to discuss business strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her initiatives have been featured in international and local publications. Busie is also a sought-after keynote speaker and moderator. The Hoffman Podcast

Cory Britt was sober for four years before coming to the Hoffman Process in June of 2024. As Cory shares his life story and recovery story with Sharon, he touches on many painful parts of his life and many joyous ones, too. In a raw and detailed way, Cory leads us through his journey from addiction to freedom. For two decades of alcoholism, Cory held incredibly poignant life dreams and aspirations while at the same time not knowing how to break free of addiction so he could follow them. His dreams terrified him because he had no idea if he would ever live them. He started drinking when he was twelve. This way of life was all he knew. Like many students, Cory had to wait almost six months to attend the Process after enrolling because it is usually fully booked six months ahead. Cory knew the Proess was coming, which was a beacon of hope during his wait. He chose to utilize the many tools he'd learned to navigate a life of sobriety, to consciously dig deeper as he moved closer to his time in Petaluma. Post-Process, Cory feels joy and excitement about his dreams and vision. He knows who he is and understands who he is. He is proud of who he is. His mind is quiet. There's space there. Cory is free now to live the life he dreamed about for all those years. As he says, "All that space I have in my head now, and all that free time in my head, all the amazing shit that I can do with it? That is the Hoffman pouring out of me every day." **Be aware that this conversation contains explicit language and mentions substance abuse. Please use your discretion. More about Cory Britt in his own words: I'm a stay-at-home dad and full-time student, passionate about helping others. With a love for the outdoors, from trail running to hitting up the ski slopes, and working out in the gym, I seek the deeper meanings in conversation, while always enjoying the little moments in life.  Just over four and a half years ago, I was at the lowest point of my existence. The deepest and darkest holes you can imagine, with little to no light in sight. After crawling from the depths of my hell, I began to rid myself of demons and transform my lifestyle. I started by switching careers. I became a student and completely overhauled my daily nutrition, all while seeking refuge for my mental well-being.  In a couple of months, I'll have earned my degree in studies in education. I'm following this with a master's in secondary education, paving a potential path to educational leadership in the future. To say I am excited to be in the classroom full-time is a drastic understatement. My love for children begins at home, with my five-year-old son and two-year-old daughter. Watching them grow has been the greatest gift; the joy they bring me each day is unmeasurable.   Through many dark days, droves of discipline, and unwavering consistency, I have begun to build the life I always dreamed of. For so long I was merely drifting along in search of meaning, now I am living and loving the beautiful space I occupy on earth. I intend to use all my pain, suffering, and the reclaimed happiness and joy, to affect change and inspire those who may feel lost or need help on this journey we call life. Through love and peace, I will continually embody and radiate my light.  As mentioned in this episode: The Rich Roll podcast •   Ken Rideout on the Rich Roll podcast •   Ken Rideout on Instagram Ed McClune, Hoffman teacher and coach •   Listen to Ed on the Hoffman Podcast "When there is no enemy within, the enemy on the outside can do you no harm." African Proverb "Suck the bone marrow out of life." Words shared by Cory Another quote about the marrow of life  from Henry David Thoreau "I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms...”

Jesus Christ is depicted through various figures, metaphors, and titles. One is the "Lion of Judah," evoking imagery of majesty, power, and authority. Rev. 5:5 (NIV), says, "Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He can open the scroll and its seven seals.” The Lion Tells His Tale is an African Proverb that says, "Until the lion tells his tale, the hunt will always glorify the hunter."Essentially, he who holds the pen controls the narrative. How do we make room for diverse voices to be heard in the story of American History?  Who will tell the "Unspoken Truths" of the African American experience?  These questions are explored in the world premiere play, "The Lion Tells His Tale." Welcome to Revive Ministries Podcast. As we go into May, we are reminded of how far mental health has come since the turn of the 20th century to where we are today. However, there is still so much work left to be done. Last month, I mentioned this African Proverb, and I feel it is still relevant to this month's theme. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.” – African proverb. “Remembering Our Names” is a response I felt having struggled in my life with mental health issues. The idea is that mental health can be inconvenient and a struggle for the individual and family/support to adjust. Several factors may play a role in a person getting appropriate help. At times the questions of why we care about mental health is simpler: the individual who suffering is a daughter, son, wife husband, parent whose quality and value does not diminish due to them having a mental health condition, and to instead remember their names in our lives first. This month, we will discuss and/or share experiences that promote a community that supports those struggling with a mental health condition together, as the African proverb states. Today, Christine Samuel is here to discuss this matter with us. Hey everyone, what's up? Today, we're going to be talking about the African proverb "Thought breaks the heart." I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "How can a thought break my heart? I'm a tough cookie. My heart is made of stone." But hear me out. Thoughts can be powerful. They can make us feel happy, sad, angry, or scared. And if we dwell on negative thoughts, they can start to eat away at our hearts. That's why it's important to be mindful of our thoughts. We need to pay attention to what we're thinking and challenge any negative thoughts that come up. Here are three nuggets of wisdom that can help you to manage your thoughts and protect your heart: 1. Be mindful of your thoughts. Pay attention to the thoughts that are running through your mind. Are they positive or negative? Are they helping you or hurting you? 2. Challenge your negative thoughts. Ask yourself if there is any evidence to support your negative thoughts. Are you seeing things from a balanced perspective? 3. Focus on the present moment. When your mind wanders to the past or future, gently bring it back to the present moment. Take a few deep breaths and focus on your surroundings. Remember, your thoughts are just thoughts. They don't have to control you. By being mindful of your thoughts, challenging your negative thoughts, and focusing on the present moment, you can protect your heart and create a more peaceful mind. Now, I want to hear from you. What are some of your favorite African proverbs? Share them in the comments below! Hey everyone, what's up? Today, I'm going to be talking to you about an African proverb that I really love: "The hair on the head is older than the beard on the chin." This proverb means that our elders are wiser than we are. They have more experience and knowledge, and we should learn from them. I know that sometimes it can be hard to listen to our elders. They may have different views than us, and they may not always be right. But even if we don't agree with them all the time, we should still respect them and listen to what they have to say. Our elders have seen a lot in their lives. They've made mistakes, and they've learned from them. They have a lot of wisdom to share with us, and we would be foolish not to listen. So next time you're talking to an elder, take the time to listen to them. Ask them questions about their life. Learn from their experiences. You may be surprised at what you learn. Here are three nuggets of wisdom that I've learned from my elders: 1. Always be kind to others. You never know what someone else is going through. 2. Don't sweat the small stuff. In the grand scheme of things, most things are not that important. 3. Enjoy the journey. Life is short, so make the most of it. I hope you found this video helpful. In this episode of AFIAPodcast, You'll explore the wisdom of the proverb and its relevance to your life today. Here are three nuggets of wisdom from this proverb: 1. Patience is key to success. When we are patient, we are more likely to make sound decisions and avoid rushing into things. 2. Slow and steady wins the race. Even if we are not the fastest or most talented, we can achieve our goals if we are patient and persistent. 3. Good things take time. How Women Can Make A Real Impact

Today's Takeaway with Florine Mark

With Wendy Steele, CEO and Founder of Impact100   Do you ever feel as if there aren't enough hours in the day? We're constantly being pulled in so many different directions with work, family, and social obligations. This becomes even more challenging for working mothers, because we may stay up late to review our children's homework and then get up early the next morning to cover all their needs before we head to our jobs. As our to-do list continues to grow, sometimes we may feel overwhelmed and guilty because we can't imagine taking on even one more task. This might be especially true when we're approached to help out with a volunteer commitment. We truly want to say “yes” and support a worthy cause but it's simply too much for one person to accomplish. However, what if we were to join a group of like-minded individuals with the same objective and work together to reach that goal? As an African Proverb states, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Perhaps the key to success might be to pool our talents in support of each other. Some of the biggest hurdles in life can be overcome if we work together for the betterment of all. Communities can be built, businesses can be launched and families can thrive based upon our collective efforts.    That's the premise behind the successful non-profit, “Impact100.” When CEO and Founder, Wendy H. Steele first launched her innovative approach to fundraising, she created a new model for how women can give back to their communities, meet the people who can make things happen, and help other women succeed. Recognized by Forbes in 2021 as one of the Top 50 Most Impactful Women Over 50, Wendy's efforts to engage and support female entrepreneurs have generated more than 123 million dollars. We're going to speak with Wendy to learn what led to the creation of Impact100 and hear about the amazing legacy she established for women to help other women in communities around the world.   What You'll Hear in This Episode: Wendy talks about her childhood and how she learned the importance of doing chores for her family at a young age.  The concept of community involvement and leaving the world in a better place than how you found it. How losing Wendy's mother at a young age instilled the concept of women supporting other women. What does Impact100 do? Why did Wendy want to create Impact100? How much does Impact100 cost, and what if a woman can't afford the total $1000 amount right away, or at all? Can men become involved with Impact100? Why is it so important to truly understand the challenges of the nonprofits that you support? What are some of the reasons that women want to join Impact100? Wendy shares the story of their first grant recipient, the Dental Clinic.   Today's Takeaway: Although we may want to help our neighbors and others who might be struggling in our community, sometimes the task feels overwhelming. We think to ourselves, how can my little contribution ever make a difference? Well, as we just heard, when our donation is combined with matching donations from hundreds of other women, together we make a significant amount that can literally transform a non-profit and help them achieve their goals. In this way, dreaming big becomes a reality. For anyone who wants to make a difference in this world and leave a lasting legacy, this is how you do it. The Impact100 growth demonstrates how the spirit of generosity is contagious. When others see the good that can come from a charitable act, they want to become a part of it. Wendy has created a model for ensuring that each new chapter has the ability not only to affect immediate changes in their community but also to lay the foundation for future generations to benefit. Remember that every day is a gift and the gift we get from volunteering and giving to others is a gift that ultimately will end up benefiting and enriching our own lives in ways we never could have imagined. I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway.”   Quotes: “We were trained from an early age to always leave a place a little bit better than we found it.” — Wendy [3:54] “They were really a council of moms, coaching my dad and helping to raise me and my little sister.” — Wendy [6:36] “Between the work my dad did and my grandparents, I was surrounded by people who truly demonstrated how we should all look out for each other and what community and family can really be.” — Wendy [6:42] “Not only did the community need what these women had, but these women needed to understand what it felt like to be a part of the solution.” — Wendy [10:22] “From hopeless to hopeful.” — Wendy [19:32] “A lot of men are fascinated by the power of impact. They also want to contribute.” — Wendy [23:20] “Identifying those heroes in the communities running nonprofits that are making a positive impact and helping them fund those causes was a life-changing experience.” — Wendy [10:48] “When you have women at both ends of the spectrum and every shade of the rainbow in between, we can engage in conversations that lead to better decisions and better outcomes.” — Wendy [13:22]   Brought to You By: Gardner White Furniture   Mentioned in This Episode: Impact100 Wendy Steele

Will your income fall off a cliff in 60 to 90 days or will you keep your momentum?  Before there were reliable Seismometers, earthquakes were even more destructive than they are today. Entire cities were built on fault lines and there would be no warning before destruction would ensue. Before tornado sirens, tornadoes would hit and no one would have time to hide in cellars and basements. There was no warning to take action. Before planes and pilots had the ability to detect and report turbulence to the planes around them, turbulence would seemingly come out of nowhere and surprise the passengers, wreck their lunch trays and freak everyone out. Now they have on-board weather radar and better reporting so they can warn everyone and steer around the disturbances. Fortunately, we now have seismometers, tornado sirens and turbulence indicators, but what about YOUR Early Warning Signs? How do you know when you're getting off track BEFORE you're actually experiencing turbulence, earthquakes, or a tornado to your own income stream? 5 Early Warning Signs You're Headed For A Crash 1.   Warning Sign: You've started to blame everyone and everything for your lack of momentum. The market conditions, your broker, lack of inventory, higher interest rates, or what party is in office.   Solution: Put down your 'blame-thrower' and embrace these affirmations:  "If it's meant to be, it's up to me!" and: "I'm a do-er, I do things now, I get things done!" 2.   Warning Sign: You're not exercising. If you're experiencing a lack of energy or feeling depressed or unmotivated, put one foot in front of the other. There's an African Proverb that goes like this: "When you pray, move your feet!"   Solution: Get back to exercising, but make it even better for your business. Join OrangeTheory, Zumba, CrossFit, or form a walking club in your neighborhood. Being around other people gives you an opportunity to talk about real estate while you're getting back on your exercise routine! 3.   Warning Sign: You're not following a profit-driven schedule. Hoping, waiting, or speculating for your next few transactions is not a plan. Your daily, profit-driven schedule must include proactive lead generation, furiously fast lead follow-up, pre-qualifying, presenting, negotiating, and closing. If you're not doing any of the last things on the list, it means you have to do the first and most important! Proactively generate new leads. Solution: Set a specific, short-term goal of generating new, pre-qualified appointments. If you need 3 new listings in the next 30 days, your short-term goal is to set at least one new listing appointment this week. What are you doing TODAY to achieve that goal? 4.   Warning Sign: The overconsumption of negative news, association with negative people or incessantly doom-scrolling. How do you feel when you spend your time this way? Solution: Follow a Media Free Morning, or Media Free Day. Unless what you're watching or listening to is in support of your powerful mindset, providing you valuable market or business knowledge, step away from that media! 5.   Warning Sign: You're not making enough contact with people ready to transact. Are you conflict-avoiding, contact-avoiding, and hiding out from potential business?

Business partnerships and collaborations are great opportunities.  “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” – African Proverb   Got a business partner or thinking about it? There's less risk, there's more minds, more eyes… and there are more opinions about everything, so getting an agreement in place regarding the business venture you're starting before you do it, or now if you've not done it, is a good idea. Invest a little time and money into making it legal, making sure everyone signs and understands.   Whether you partner to host a podcast, or you partner in a full-fledged business, with your sister, your spouse, or friend, you want it in writing. Whether there's two of you or 10 of you, how will you determine the role of the individuals involved?    These are things you don't want to leave to chance.   In this episode I'll open with ideas about how you may already be partnering and not even realize it, options you may consider having a business partner for first in your business and give you a few things to consider before you get legal advice and invest in making it official.    Think of this as your introduction into partnerships if you're not doing them (but like I said, you may be and not realize it), or a great reminder to review what you have in place to keep partnerships running smoothly.   Considering a Business Partnership?  One thing I would suggest is clear. It rang true for all the people I talked with whether they were in a business that was currently making money or that on the flip side, was hurting and not making money. Whenever there is money involved there is emotion. Someone can too easily feel taken advantage of. So, while you're thinking about it, or in early stages and just beginning to look at how you monetize your podcast business partnership for example, it's a very good time for all parties to consider “what if.”    Honestly, this could have been the name or this episode. What if… This is a very good place to start.    Business Partnerships and Collaborations | Amazing Health & Fitness Growth I'm going to throw out a couple scenarios for you to consider here:  If you have investors, someone who helped you with a startup, do they have any decision-making power?  If so, what? How much? Who has the bottom-line veto power?    Say someone approaches one of you and wants to do business with you but not your partner. They want you to do something on the side. Is there any agreement about partners ability to have a “side hustle” that is related to the same business?  What if one of you feels strongly about hiring or firing someone? About the training methods and who is responsible for it?    How do you split revenue? Is it down the middle after expenses? Or is it split differently based on tasks and responsibilities?    Are you taking commission and paying yourselves a base salary commensurate with what you'd pay someone else doing the same tasks if you were to hire them? Or are you only taking distributions after expenses?    That already is a lot. But let's look at a situation where you and a partner might start a business that includes fitness programs, nutrition programs and social media posting and podcasting. The day-to-day decisions alone are numerous! Who posts? How often and when? How do you determine the posts? That's a time-consuming task  right there, but if you not only do it, but you have to run it by a second party, there's a lot of time involved times two. Or is one of you in charge? Or one of you in charge of overseeing your VA who is doing it for you and tracking and reporting the stats for partner decisions to be made at regular meetings.    Other Fitness & Health Business Partnership Decisions Then there are pricing decisions, branding decisions, cost of goods sold, services you hire for branding, photos, videography or editing. Or if one of you does this, is that paid hourly or on salary to do it, then again business profits are handled through distributions paid out to each of you in an even split? The platforms you use have a certain cost and as you grow there will be more of them. Who decides or does the research? Who monitors expenses like this?    Someone has to be responsible for accounting, bookkeeping, monitoring P & L statements to know if this is really working and what parts of the business are working and which are not.    Let's look at one of the early business collabs you might do which is co-hosting a podcast. How fun, right? To host a podcast with a friend, what could be better? You get to have chats regularly and have twice the reach with your personal accounts plus your business account, and twice the people you meet and want to engage with.    And then say, you start having people want to sponsor your show or have you promote them and all of a sudden you're monetizing that podcast. Or you might start promoting affiliate products or services you love to your audience and that starts generating revenue. Is there a business account where that's going? Is that revenue equally split? Is there any reason one of you will feel like you deserve more because you enlisted them, suggested it and created more of the promotions?    What if one of you has a business that she monetizes – a weight loss coaching business. The other one doesn't really have a coaching or fitness service but is the more journalistic and media personality behind you starting and getting in front of people.    What if one of you is a doctor and the other a fitness professional? One of you sees patients and builds a business based on medical services. The other a fitness professional may refer to the doc and doc may refer to the fitness programs, but it isn't clear exactly the benefit to each of you. What if the relationship dissolves? Who “owns the podcast” and the listenership and ability to market via social to the established list?    Business Partnerships Next Steps:  List all the partnerships you have now  Consider ones you are thinking about  Make a list of possible situations (responsibilities, exit strategy, decision-making, distributions)  Ask your partner(s) to make a list too Have a meeting (or a series of them)  Have an agreement made up about the partnership and legal rights of each and how decisions, or board meetings, and reporting are handled.     Other Episodes You May Like:  Grow Your Fitness Business in 2023 | Personal Trainers and Health Coaches: https://www.fitnessmarketingmastery.com/fitness-business-in-2023/ A New Fitness Business Model for Your Virtual Fitness Business: https://www.fitnessmarketingmastery.com/virtual-fitness-business/ Resources: Health & Fitness Business Scorecard: https://www.fitnessmarketingmastery.com/scorecard Menopause Fitness Specialist Program: https://www.fitnessmarketingmastery.com/menopause-fitness-specialist/ Marketing to Women Copywriting Course: https://www.fitnessmarketingmastery.com/copywriting-course

Mike Salguero is the founder of ButcherBox, the leading high-quality, direct-to-consumer meats brand. Since its launch in 2015, the company has grown to become a $600 million business, all while putting an emphasis on animal welfare, the environment, and supporting farmers and fishermen. ButcherBox is a certified B Corporation, signaling the brand's commitment to using its business as a force for good. In 2020, Mike was named an Entrepreneur Of The Year® National Award winner by Ernst & Young.  In this episode we discuss: ●      Lessons from a failed start-up that informed the approach to building ButcherBox ●      What it looks like to develop the whole human (personal and professional) at work ●      How Mike would like every employee—past, present, and future—to feel about their time at ButcherBox Key Takeaways: ●      ButcherBox relies heavily on suppliers to support its business. Not just farmers and fishermen, but also box manufacturers, website developers, and many other service providers. Often businesses will choose to create these things in-house, but there is beauty in ButcherBox's approach. First, it enables ButcherBox to focus on what they're good at. Second, by going to suppliers with a request for a sustainable box (for example), ButcherBox causes a ripple effect by creating demand for goods and services that will benefit many other companies. This approach reminded me of the African Proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” It's the “together” piece that's needed to create systemic change. ●      I can't help but see parallels between common-day cubicle life and feedlots. Both were created to maximize efficiency, with a sole focus on profit. Both are unnatural habitats. Both have damaging consequences. The basic principle of the feedlot is to confine the animal in order to fatten it up as quickly as possible. The cramped quarters make animals distressed and prone to disease. In cubicle life, employees are confined for better management oversight. Research shows that cubicles result in less productivity, because of constant distractions. Plus, the uninspired environment reinforces a message that each employee is a replaceable cog in the machine (not great for mental health).  Trying to liven up corporate environments with foosball tables and free drinks is like adding disco balls to feedlots to drive cow happiness and engagement. Broken systems need a complete overhaul. A shiny disco ball band-aid won't make cows healthier or workers happier. ●      Regenerative agriculture moves away from conventional mono-crop farming (which takes from the soil without giving much back) to mirroring mother nature in its design. Regenerative agriculture embodies a natural cycle of give and take that improves soil health, biodiversity, and climate resilience. As Mike shared his leadership approach, I couldn't help but think of it as regenerative leadership. Here's why. The relationship between an employee and an employer usually resembles this: the employee gets a paycheck for showing up to perform a mono-function. The employer is taking energy out of the employee, and mainly replenishing through a transactional payment. It's lopsided. Mike talked about developing both the professional side and the personal side of his workforce. Not compartmentalizing—only investing in the “work version” of employees—but investing in employees to grow holistically as individuals.    When you compartmentalize, you show up as less than yourself, a fractional compartment of who you are.   I'm willing to bet that regenerative leadership results in a more healthy, more innovative, and more resilient workforce.  References: Follow Mike on Twitter and let him know what you think about this episode Connect with Mike on LinkedIn ButcherBox (New members can get $30 off their first box by entering the promo code “Mike sent me”) CustomMade You can learn more about the B Corp movement here Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? To which he replied, simply, "Send me the information. It will be confidential.”My conversation with Buffett lasted no more than half a minute.[8:00] My dream buyer for the family business all along was Warren Buffet.[11:00] "This can be the fastest deal in history," Buffett said."But what about due diligence?" I asked, surprised at how fast the negotiations were moving. Most suitors demand to see every scrap of paper you've ever generated and to interview every top manager. That wasn't Buffett's way. "I can smell these things, Buffett said. "This one smells good.”[12:00] First A Dream by Jim Clayton. (Founders #91)[13:00] Buffett on his management technique: “Managers run their own shows. They don't have to report to central management. When we get somebody who is a .400 hitter we don't start telling them how to swing.”[14:00] I was always taught that many, many people were out there developing ideas I could use. I have found that to be true throughout my life. These thoughts and ideas have all been borrowed or stolen from many wise people.Think of the world as your garden of marvelous people and ideas with unlimited picking rights for you.[17:00] Cable Cowboy: John Malone and the Rise of the Modern Cable Business by Mark Robichaux. (Founders #268)[23:00] Despite missteps, entrepreneurs are a special breed who do not give up on the larger goals.[24:00] It's not hard to express the quality we're looking for in metaphors. The best is probably a running back. A good running back is not merely determined, but flexible as well. They want to get downfield, but they adapt their plans on the fly. — Relentlessly Resourceful by Paul Graham[25:00] Entrepreneurs are driven to succeed. They possess an almost naive belief that nothing can stand in their way, they are mentally deaf to those who belittle their chances, they love to compete, and they have the skills of broken field runners who take the bumps and bruises along the way, change course when necessary, and stay focused on the goal.If this is not you, don't try to fool yourself. It's not worth it.Thinking you can start your own business or wanting to be your own boss, just because you hate your job, when you really have no desire or stamina to go it on your own, is courting disaster. Where there is no real will, there is no way. Some people are more  enamored by the concept than the reality. They would rather contemplate the beauty of the mountain from the base. The entrepreneur wants to climb the mountain first, briefly appreciate the gorgeous vistas from the summit, and then find the next mountain. If you possess this obsession of seeing your own creative notions succeed and are willing to pay the price, then you have no choice but to pursue the life of an entrepreneur.[29:00] He taught us to concern ourselves only with those things over which we have control.I thought he was unique in this until I realized this is one of the key common traits of highly successful people. Those folks are never victims; they take what comes and handle the situation. The rest is a waste of time.[30:00] Upgrade the herd annually: "You make more money closing bad stores than opening new ones.”His philosophy made sense. We decided we would rather spend time and effort on a $4.5 million store that could ultimately achieve annual sales of $6 million than on a lower-volume store with less potential.[32:00] Focus is your lever to success.Do not underestimate the incredible amount of mental discipline it takes to focus yourself and your teammates. Wonderful alternatives and seductive opportunities abound and temptations to go in multiple directions are unlimited.Commit yourself to be the best, define what that means, and focus on the head of that pin like no one in your industry.[32:00] Estee Lauder was a master at doing things don't scale. — Estée Lauder: A Success Storyby Estée Lauder. (Founders #217)[33:00] To be successful, have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart. —Thomas Watson The Maverick and His Machine: Thomas Watson Sr. and The Making of IBM by Kevin Maney (Founders #87)[38:00] Only a fool tests the depth of the water with both feet. —African Proverb[40:00] Some of our partners created an inhospitable climate for customers. Some posted negative signs. At one store a manager hung a sign in red warning customers that they would be charged a steep fee if they bounced a  check. It said, "The bank doesn't make copies and we don't cash checks." That really got me boiling.I jumped up on the counter and ripped it down as customers and coworkers looked on, amazed. That may sound extreme, but I needed to make the point in a memorable way. I didn't want signs like that staring our customers in the face.I told our coworkers that the occasional hit we took for a bounced check cost far less than what we lost-and couldn't quantify-by creating a subtly hostile atmosphere. —Copy This!: How I turned Dyslexia, ADHD, and 100 square feet into a company called Kinkos by Paul Orfalea.[42:00] Nearly any action or communication means far more when done urgently.Trust only movement.[42:00] One person with a belief is equal to a force of ninety-nine who have only interests. —John Stuart Mill[43:00] None of this works if you can't trust your own judgement.[46:00] This reservoir of knowledge and human experience creates tremendous opportunities and advantages for you as an entrepreneur. You are heir to the discoveries of many entrepreneurs who skinned their shins trying something new. It is likely other  entrepreneurs before you have experienced the same challenges and problems, and found ways to surmount them.[47:00] You have the experiences of thousands of experts and mentors at your fingertips.[47:00] The incredible, wonderful, and unavoidable truth is that seeking the help of others can put you light years ahead of other people who beat their heads against the wall trying to reinvent the wheel[48:00] I've never found anybody that didn't want to help me if I asked them for help. I called up Bill Hewlett when I was 12 years old. He answered the phone himself. I told him I wanted to build a frequency counter. I asked if he had any spare parts I could have. He laughed. He gave me the parts. And he gave me a summer job at HP working on the assembly line putting together frequency counters. I have never found anyone who said no, or hung up the phone. I just ask. Most people never pick up the phone and call. And that is what separates the people who do things, versus the people who just dream about them. You have to act. —Steve Jobs[53:00] "Max kept repeating, 'As hire As. Bs hire Cs. So the first B you hire takes the whole company down." — The Founders: The Story of Paypal and the Entrepreneurs Who Shaped Silicon Valley by Jimmy Soni.[54:00] “The greatest thing you can do for your competition—hiring poorly.” —Bill Gates[59:00] I wish that I had known sooner that if you miss a child's play or performance or sporting event, you will have forgotten a year later the work emergency that caused you to miss it.
