Cushioning shoes vs Stability shoes for a test run?

I was just on a call with an injured runner who is about to go out for a test run.  She is very excited because she is going to get either a yes or a no on deciding if the tissue in her foot that is been healing is strong enough to withstand a little bit of running at a medium pace for a short distance.  This is an important test because if it hurts, obviously no running, right? You got to wait some more. But because you want to get a yes, you want to make sure that your chances of getting the yes are as high as possible.  The way that you do that is you protect the foot as much as possible. So, the shoes you should use for your test run really do matter a lot.  If you are going to go out and try a test run after you have been injured, what kind of shoes should you wear? Cushioning shoes or stability shoes?  Well, that is a great question and that is what we're talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast.

With fears of the war in the Middle East escalating into World War 3, BizNews speaks to Israel's Ambassador to South Africa, Eli Belotsercovsky. He says: “…we have to fight back. And we will. And particularly after this attack, which endangered the lives of many, many Israelis, we will have to respond - and we will choose the time and the way to do it.” However, the ambassador says that the conditions for a World War “have not been created yet”. “I think that common sense will prevail. And those regimes like Iran that try to destabilise the world order, that try to bring more violence, to use terror as a tool to gain more political gains, I think that if we manage to prevent them from doing this and to block them, I think there would be no war.” Meanwhile, he describes the sombre mood in Israel on the eve of the 1st anniversary of the October 7 terror attack. He also deals with accusations that Israel is an Apartheid state, and dissects the clashing narratives about Israel's war again Hamas, Hezbollah, and the clerical regime of Iran.

Today, we have not one but two of the most sought-after coaches in the world. Lawrence Van Lingen and Erin Carson have risen to legendary status in the world of endurance sports by following their curiosity and not worrying too much about what the mainstream says about mobility and strength for athletes. Guided by intuition and strong intellects, these two coaches are staples in the lives of A-List athletes like Jan Frodeno, Rudy Von Berg, Taylor Knibb, and Paula Findlay. Erin is making her three-peat appearance on the show today, having first come on the show back in 2018 for episode 114 and then just a few months ago for episode  373. Lawrence first came on the show in 2019 for episode 184, which was also his first podcast ever. After recently speaking to Erin and then learning that Lawrence has left his So Cal contingency for the athletic mecca of Boulder, Colorado, we were inspired to get these two on together. Short episode summary Do your shoes really matter when running? We've talked about it before, but it keeps coming up so tune in to find out what coaches Valerie and Caroline have to say on the matter.   Timestamps of big takeaways Recapping Our Virtual Clinic [00:44] Everyone who gave us feedback on the virtual clinic was seeing a difference in their run thanks to our practice. From no longer feeling plantar fasciitis symptoms to knees no longer hurting, our clinic participants got to experience running pain-free.   The Shoes You Should Get to Run [02:06] The first thing you need to look for is comfort. You want to feel stable in your shoe, and like you're still standing on your feet.   Super Shoes [03:02] Four years ago or so, Super Shoes came out. It became a trend, and elite athletes were wearing them. But, spoiler alert, it just feels like a normal shoe.   The Relationship Between Shoes And Injuries [04:56] Cushioning is not protective against running-related injuries. Furthermore, shoe companies admit that all shoes really do is protect your foot from the ground.   The Feeling of New Shoes [06:38] Anyone who puts on a new pair of shoes feels quicker. But that sensation will fade with time. It's like getting a new tire for your car; you could feel like you're driving a little better at first, but it doesn't take long for those new tires to feel like the old tires again.   Learn To Run Properly [09:16] When you learn to run and use the proper movement, those injuries disappear since you're doing it correctly. It's not about the shoe!   Stay Comfortable [11:52] Coach Valerie will not advise you to purchase a new pair of shoes to run pain-free. When running, stick to what you're familiar with. And as you practice, you'll realize that you want to go down.   Rate, Review & Subscribe Reminder Don't forget to like and subscribe to our show. You can also rate and review our show on iTunes! Layoffs and hiring freezes are growing rapidly, but the labor market is still strong. Some workers are implementing a new concept called  "career cushions" to prepare themselves in case of an unexpected job loss. According to LinkedIn statistics, members added 365 million skills to their profiles in 2022, which is a 43% increase from the previous year.   Many employees are "career cushioning," which means they actively seek new employment opportunities and plan to transition out of their current position as soon as possible. The term cushioning is borrowed from the dating approach that involves considering other choices to soften the shock of a breakup. In the workplace, this expression means preparing for the unexpected by keeping your options open and ensuring you have a safe place to land. Career cushioning includes preventative measures, like updating one's skill set, networking, and applying for open positions.   In this week's career advancement edition of The Free Retree Show, career advisor Sergio Patterson shares how career cushioning can help you prepare for a job loss. COVID-19 News from CJSR

Recently, I broke several pairs of shoes, leading me to wonder about what kind of advice for buying shoes there is on the internet. Here's a smattering of what I found from the REI website.Think about where you plan to walk most of the time. Then narrow your walking shoe choice based on that place. As I was looking at REI's advice, they have three categories: road-running shoes, hiking shoes, and trail-running shoes, but there are a plethora of other good walking shoes out there, so splash about and see what suits you. The experts at REI suggest that when you're considering any walking shoes, you should focus on these factors: Stability: lateral support: a shoe that you can't bend or twist easily is what you're looking for. Cushioning, and Fit They also point out that fit supersedes all other considerations: technology, reviews, fashion or recommendations from friends. A proper fit helps prevent bruised toenails and heel blisters, as well as more serious foot problems. Buying a shoe that fits you well is the best way to end up with a shoe that'll keep you and your feet happy forever.

What do you do when your company has a 400% increase in orders after surviving a down year? Cathleen Woodall faced the same challenge and came out on top! Cathleen is now sharing lessons to help Amazon sellers avoid many of the pitfalls she has come across in her own entrepreneurial journey. You'll learn about how to set up deals with distributors for long-term success, the importance of controlling your brand, and how to maintain critical metrics to keep your listings thriving. Takeaways: When a wholesaler tries to sell your product, they are only looking for 30% margins and will charge drastically less and undercut your own listings for the same products.  You need to have agreements in place with your distributors that bar them from being able to sell your product on Amazon. The terms of these agreements need to be clearly spelled out. If the distributors violate it, you need to stop doing business with them.Firing distributors may seem like a hard thing to do, but it helps your company in the long run. This gives control of your brand back to you and helps longer-term profits by avoiding being undercut on price.Your Listing Quality is very important to your success on Amazon. It's crucial that you check the quality of the product and its packaging before it is sent to FBA warehouses. Track how many items you check and how many are sent in to find your inspection rate.If you are shipping products directly from your manufacturer to the FBA warehouse, you run the risk of missing quality errors which could lead to your listing being suspended. If your price point falls for non-sales-related reasons, it can be a long journey to work the price back up to its initial price point. When you are offering several similar products of varying quality and or value, you need to have a wide enough margin between the products so that the lower-priced products do not cannibalize the sales of the higher-priced products. Quote of the Show:“We have to have control of our brand. We have to have control of our pricing. You can't be on Amazon and not have control of it.” - Cathleen WoodallLinks:LinkedInEmail: woodall@gelcoproducts.comCompany TwitterCompany websiteShout Outs:Jason LangstonWays to Tune In:Apple Podcast (Leave a Review)iHeart RadioPodchaser (Leave a Review)Amazon MusicAudibleSpotifyGoogle PodcastStitcherYouTube

The MOVEMENT Movement
Episode 76: Do Running Shoes Make you Stupid?

The MOVEMENT Movement

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 3, 2020 16:22

Now, I'm not suggesting that if you put on a pair of traditional running shoes, your IQ will go down, you won't get into the college of your choice, or you won't be able to fill out a tax form or a crossword puzzle. But, I'm going to talk about two other kinds of stupidity. And when I talk about traditional running shoes, traditional is sort of a funny word to use because what most people think of as a running shoe, thick, padded, motion control, arch support, elevated heel, things like that. Frankly, that's actually not traditional. For most of human history, we ran in shoes that looked frankly more like the minimalist shoe, just enough to protect you from the ground and hold that protection onto your foot. So what I'm talking about with traditional running shoes... And here's one of the ways they make you dumber, because they have all that cushioning, which we think we need, we think. Well, Cushing is good, because running must be hard on the joint, so we need cushioning, right? Well, it's a great idea, but the reality is, it doesn't work that way at all, because when you have all that cushioning, there are a number of things that happen, one, you tend to land harder because your brain is trying to get feedback from the ground, and with all that questioning, you can't feel it. You have more nerve endings in the sole of your feet then anywhere but your fingertips and your lips. That's so that your brain knows how to use the rest of your body correctly. So if you make it dumb by making it numb, sometimes you'll land harder just to get that feedback that you need for balance and agility, but of course with all that extra padding, you don't have the balance with all that extra height, you don't have the balance. Matt Sands joins us as we discuss continuous improvement and quality and their importance when the oil and gas industry in a downturn. Don’t do the wrong things righter! Quality shouldn’t be something else that costs you money.  Quality is getting your processes and procedures on paper and doing what you say you’re going to.  This is important anytime, but especially during a downturn when you might be facing a shut down.  Having your procedures in places helps to track everything from how much time a paper sat on someone’s desk for approval to waste to rework.  If you have a quality management program in place, you can track exactly where your money is spent and where you can cut back or do better.  Cushioning the bottom dollar when business is booming helps when a downturn comes.  If you don’t have one in place during a downturn, a quality management program will help you scale back exactly where you are able.  Yes, it’s money you have to spend up front on a consultant to help you, but it’s money well spent and that you’ll not only make back, but be able to track how you made it back.  Continual improvement is strategically names; business should always strive to improve, continuously.  A good quality management program helps that improvement along. Most runners wear running shoes when they run. And the type of shoes you choose can help protect you from the forces of running. If you have high arches, in general at your feet are more stable and more rigid. A rigid foot type generally translates to higher peak forces when you run, and particularly when you land as a heel striker. Cushioning type running shoes can help protect your feet from the pounding forces of running, if you have high arches. Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we're talking about why runners who have high arches need cushioning running shoes.

Sometimes life can be unexpected, and the only way we can prepare for that is by creating and building in cushions to our time so that we can slow down and do our best. In today's episode, I'll go over how and why we need to stop underestimating our time and instead adjust to it. Once we have these cushions, or buffers, in place we will stop wasting time and money and start giving ourselves the space to plan.   What's In This Episode: • How to build in buffers to your life. • Real-life examples of how buffers allow you to adjust to unexpected events. • Why sometimes it's not the best idea to be overly optimistic. • How to calculate the time it will actually take you to complete a task. I will obviously not have full details so will provide customized strategies based on what you share. Always consider your own specific circumstances before taking any action. These are suggestions not guarantees. Emily, it sounds like you are in a tough and frustrating spot. So sorry for this! There are still some strategies that you can try. It does seem like you and your team have tried everything within your control to help her change. If she’s staying then we need to identify what is still in your control. #1 Make it as Small as Possible If your co-worker is going to stay and continue behaving the way she is then all of that is out of your control at this point. You want to stay in your job out of a passion for the non-profit’s work. The goal is to see if you can make this situation at all palatable. You want to stay but can not with your current level of frustration. You can only change what you can control and your focus is something you can control. Right now it sounds like there is a constant focus on your coworker and her negative behavior. Both from you and your team. You can’t control your team but you can control you. In your mind, make her as small as possible. Put her in a circle in your mind. You can literally visual her as a tiny, tiny little being. Make her smaller and smaller and quieter and quieter. See her inside a tiny, tiny little contained circle. Now, make the mission of the non-profit and the important work that you get to do as big as possible. In your mind visualize that getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Put it in a giant circle. Now visualize that giant circle next to the tiny, tiny circle that contains this woman. She’s a tiny little ant next to a universe. Practice that visual. Now, bring it into real life. In every moment you get to choose what you focus on. Everyone is in an uproar over this woman, understandably. You are sharing stories, cleaning up her messes, wishing she weren’t there, wanting her to behave differently, collecting her issues, thinking about them, talking about them. She his monopolizing your focus. I’m not saying it will be easy, but it is doable   Just STOP. Ignore her. Make her small. Stop getting frustrated when you have to clean up her mess. I’m not saying it isn’t frustrating. But the reality is whether you are focusing on it and frustrated or ignoring it she is the same. Your frustration does nothing to solve the problem anyway. Pass over that thought and move right on to the work at hand. Visualize the big difference you are making in the world through your work. Place your focus there. Place your focus where you CAN and ARE making a difference. Ignore her and her actions. Place no focus there. #2 Stop Cleaning up Her Messes Someone is making the decision to keep her. Is this same person suffering the consequences of this co-worker’s mistakes? Or, is the team doing all of the clean up. I know it is hard, especially when you feel so strongly about the work you are doing. Cushioning a decision maker from the full consequences and dealing with all of them yourselves can sometimes prolong a tough decision. Pain is what moves humans into action. If there is pain on both sides of a decision people have a tendency to stick to the actions that create the least amount of pain or consequences. There is a reason someone is deciding to keep this employee. I am assuming it’s not about her work ethic. It sounds more like they have guilt or fear. Maybe they fear her defensive response. Perhaps they have guilt because they know she needs the job. The pain of that guilt and fear is bigger than the consequence they are experiencing from her bad behavior. Is that because you guys clean it all up so the organization does not suffer? Does the boss have to deal with the team complaints but not the clean up? Do what you can to help decision makers feel the full brunt of consequences. Stop being on the clean up crew. You may even tell them that you can no longer do it. You will do your job to the best of your ability but will no longer clean up her messes. You are overwhelmed, resentful and frustrated. Share what is true. What do you have to lose? You are at your wit’s end. The only chance that you can stay is if something changes. Your change may be the catalyst that makes that transformation happen. #3 See Her in a Different Light Part of your frustration is in wanting her to be different. Perhaps you assume she is doing what she’s doing on purpose. Chances are the outcomes she achieves are not what she intends. Instead they are the fall out for the false beliefs, fears, lack of self esteem, whatever is actually driving her. And it might be a sense of entitlement and a desire to do as little as possible. There are some who have that mission. The truth is, life can’t be very fulfilling for her. She knows she’s not doing a good job. She knows she’s trying to stay stuck and hanging on by a thread where she is. She’s working hard and expending a lot of energy to control what she can and keep things status quo. I’m not trying to help you excuse away what she’s doing. It is a shame. But for your own level of satisfaction and nothing more, can you feel sorry for her or find her actions ridiculously funny? Is it possible for someone to be this delusional? If you can find humor or empathy rather than frustration the situation may begin to be more palatable. And this can help you stay in a job you otherwise love. #4 Leave If all else fails, you can’t make the issue small and focus on other things, you can’t find empathy or humor, you can’t ignite the desire for change in the leaders by allowing them to feel the consequences. If the frustration is at a level that you can no longer tolerate then the option for your sanity and enjoyment of life is to leave. Use your gifts and all that you have to offer to an organization that values hard work and a focus where it should be. An organization that does not tolerate drama. It is possible that your resignation would ignite a fire in the leaders who are allowing the behavior to continue. I wouldn’t suggest giving an idle threat but if you are truly at that point and find no other options let the leaders know. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll do what they must.
