Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Previously, Rose worked for Pernod Ricard Japan as a Brand Manager for Ki No Bi and White Spirits, Brand Manager for Jameson Irish Whiskey, and Wine Ambassador. Her earlier roles also included Sales Support Executive at iSeek Communications, Guest Relations at Tokyo Daiichi Hotel, and Guest Relations at Whitehorse Hotel. Rose holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Wollongong. Drawing from her years of experience at Pernod Ricard and now as the representative of Wine Australia, she emphasizes the importance of trust, consensus-building, cultural adaptation, and clarity of purpose. One of her key insights is that successful leadership in Japan depends less on hierarchy and more on alignment. Building consensus among diverse stakeholders—importers, state offices, and trade partners—requires time, patience, and careful listening. She advocates for deep preparation, active curiosity, and a willingness to ask questions without judgment in order to fully understand local expectations and dynamics. By gathering feedback and adjusting plans collaboratively, she has been able to lead without formal authority and still earn commitment. Trust is foundational. Rose builds it through consistency, transparency, and follow-through. She notes that while expat leaders may be under pressure from headquarters to move quickly, speed is often perceived as risky in Japan. Thus, she emphasizes defining clear goals and then creating an environment where people feel safe contributing and experimenting—mitigating risk rather than avoiding it. She sees the leader's role as owning the risk and setting the conditions for safe innovation. Rose also stresses that Japanese language skills are advantageous for breaking down communication barriers and signalling commitment. However, she acknowledges that fluency isn't a requirement for every role—openness and cultural sensitivity can go a long way. She describes how even small actions, like proper greetings and showing bilingual flexibility, help build rapport and credibility. Her leadership philosophy centres on mutual respect. At Pernod Ricard, she managed small multicultural teams by identifying individuals' strengths and aligning them with strategic goals. She believes in tailoring support based on each person's aspirations—whether they're short-term visitors or long-term residents. Rose has also navigated challenges as a young, non-Japanese female leader. She counters potential bias with competence, clarity, and professionalism, ensuring she is always well-prepared and direct in communication. She stresses the value of local mentors and networks—like Austrade and Australian embassy contacts—for problem-solving and cultural insight. Ultimately, her definition of leadership is grounded in mutual respect, trust, and shared accountability. She underscores that leading in Japan is less about authority and more about connection, consistency, and cultural fluency.

She shares that the big topic driving a lot of conversations is how operators are navigating their approach to improving accessibility for customers, whether that means through delivery, adjustments to their physical store footprints with pickup windows, introducing AI technology within drive-thru service, and geofencing so restaurants can better anticipate guest arrivals to create a better customer experience. She says, “There are an entirely different set of considerations for what sort of interactions consumers want to have with their restaurants right now.”Abraham stops by to talk about the exciting innovations happening at Cargill and attending Food On Demand live for the first time, where she was able to hear directly from operators and see first-hand interactions with the different start-ups. She shares that her two key takeaways from the conference panel discussions are focus and problem-solving. She talks about the importance of operators using technology to solve both problems and enhance user experience. She says, “What I'm hearing more about is focus and problem first. It's hearing them really refreshing and thinking, ‘Hey, we're not just gonna push technology to push technology, let's again figure out what we're doing to make the guest experience better, make the employee experience better and drive that forward.' ”Ruby Tuesday Director of Off-Premise and Guest Relations, April Rogers stops by to chat with the guys about launching new virtual brands, ghost kitchens, and embracing the latest technology and innovation. Schatzberg asks Rogers which innovations she's most excited about. Additionally, he has been key in helping improve the profitability and appeal of both Michel-Schlumberger and Martin Family Vineyards, which saw significant increases in revenue and traffic during his tenure at each winery. “My goal is to create a memorable wine experience for everyone who visits us,” shares Jim. “At Charles Krug, we have an obligation to share our remarkable legacy and lead the way for Napa to become a cultural hub through wine, art, food, and history.” And Jim insists that it is his mission to remove the pretension of the wine business. “Wine is complex enough. When you are starting as a student of this industry, there are really only two wines made in the world — yummy and yucky.” Learn more: https://www.charleskrug.com/ https://twitter.com/sonomawineguy More about the host Polly Hammond: Polly is Founder and CEO of 5forests. News: For those Weeklyteers who haven't already purchased their Magic Keys to Disneyland, the Disney Parks Blog has posted a frequently asked questions post to help answer common questions that folks have been wondering. Some of the most important takeaways relate to where and when to buy the Keys. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/08/planning-to-purchase-a-disneyland-resort-magic-key-pass-your-top-magic-key-questions-answered/ and https://www.micechat.com/297956-breaking-news-disneyland-delivers-a-new-magic-key-pass-program-replacement/ The day that we post this episode is the big day that the Magic Key program launches at the resort. Magic Key holders will have an exclusive lounge in both parks for a limited time. The Magic Key Terrace in Disney California Adventure will be a permanent location for Keyholders to relax with friends and family, overlooking Route 66 and Avengers Campus. The more limited time location in Disneyland at the old Starcade location will offer charging for cell phones, photo ops, and other perks. The location in Disneyland will be open September 1st through October 31st. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/08/23/disneyland-sets-opening-dates-for-exclusive-annual-passholder-bar-and-lounge/ We have compared the new Magic Key Enchant level pass to the previous Flex Pass from 2019 many times. This week, The Orange County Register wrote an entire article comparing the two passes. The biggest differences are the lack of “good to go” days that the Flex Pass had, where Flex holders didn't have to make a reservation at all, with the new Enchant level always requiring a reservation. Additionally, the Flex pass had 350 days where guests could use the ticket, compared to the 216 days of the Enchant key. Enchant key holders can make twice as many reservations than the old Flex pass. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/08/24/magic-key-vs-flex-pass-how-the-new-and-old-disneyland-annual-passes-compare/ Fans wanting to know more about what the retheme of Splash Mountain will entail should check out the video released this week on the Disney Parks Blog. As part of Disney's World Princess Week, they got together some of the creative minds behind the upcoming changes and made a 30 minute short talking all about it. Still no word on when Splash Mountain will be transformed, but this video is a must for those wondering what is next for the attraction. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/08/gather-around-the-table-for-a-conversation-and-peek-at-the-latest-developments-of-the-upcoming-attraction-inspired-by-the-princess-and-the-frog/ and https://www.micechat.com/262305-breaking-news-splash-mountain-to-become-princess-and-the-frog-themed/ Since Disneyland reopened at the end of April, Guest Relations had been stationed outside of City Hall in the Tour Gardens. This week, they were able to relocate back into City Hall. Also, one of Tage's favorite things has returned on Main Street – the Market Street fruit cart! This cart is located outside the main doors to the Market House and in front of the Main Street lockers. The location sells a variety of fruit and some beverages. – https://www.micechat.com/299488-disneyland-update-the-winds-of-change-are-blowing/ A lot of guests love the Disney PhotoPass service, but sometimes there isn't a PhotoPass Photographer around when you want that perfect photo! Andres, a Disneyland Resort photo specialist from planDisney shared some of his tips on getting the perfect photos when at the resort. His key points are to get creative, find new locations, be patient, and use what you have. To get all the tips and details on how to make the most of your photos, check out the link in our show notes at dlweekly.net. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/08/capture-magical-disney-memories-through-photos-with-tips-from-plandisney-panelist-andres-v/ OMG!! Disney has teased three new characters coming to the Oogie Boogie Bash this year. In a short video released online, they teased a spider toy crawling along to tease Sid from Toy Story, a dress on a mannequin to tease Cruella, and a maniacal laugh and a directors chair to tease Agatha Harkness from Wandavision. – https://www.instagram.com/reel/CS9ih2flBXB/ Halloween is starting to move in around the resort this week. Frontierland already has a lot of Halloween/fall decorations installed, and over at the Haunted Mansion, Jack and his gang are decking the halls. – https://www.micechat.com/299488-disneyland-update-the-winds-of-change-are-blowing/ A new set of ears have arrived in time for the Halloween celebration at the resort. This new set is another balloon set, which features Mickey trick or treating on the clear “balloon” section, with an orange Mickey Balloon design on the inside. The band is black and orange with Boo! embroidered on the side to complete the look. The balloon also lights up! The ears cost $29.99 and can be found around Disneyland. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/08/19/halloween-light-up-balloon-ears-have-arrived-in-disneyland/ There aren't many Mickey ears that are for Star Wars fans, but Disney has just released a pair that are almost perfect. The new set feature the Galactic Republic logo on one ear, and the Rebellion logo on the other. On one side of the headband it reads “A long time ago”, with “in a galaxy far, far away” on the other. The material is a faux leather and are $29.99. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/08/24/the-perfect-mickey-ears-for-star-wars-fans-dont-exis/ Maleficent fans should be very excited for a new Spirit Jersey that is now available at Elias & Co in DCA. The jersey features yellow and green flames on the bottom, with Maleficent as a dragon silhouette, on a purple jersey, with Disneyland Resort in the same colors as the fire. The fron has the Disneyland “D” with EST. 1955 below and Maleficent breathing fire behind. The jersey can be yours for $74.99. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/08/photos-maleficent-spirit-jersey-roars-into-disneyland-resort/ Fire up your Disney+ account! Imagineering's Project Expo is developing exoskeletons which cast members can utilize to interact with guests with larger characters than in the past. Some of the characters that could use this technology include the Hulk, Thanos, Sully, and maybe even a walk around Harold from the Matterhorn! Hopefully we will see these in the parks sooner than later. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/08/video-walt-disney-imagineering-releases-footage-of-new-character-exoskeletons-in-action/ Cast Members who are part of a union at the Disneyland Resort will have to be vaccinated for Covid-19, unless they apply for an accommodation through a negotiated process. No date has been set to satisfy this requirement, but cast members who do not get vaccinated and who are not granted an accommodation will be separated from the company with a “yes” rehire status. Disney will be hosting on-site vaccination clinics over the next several weeks. As of July 30th, salaried and non-union cast members had 60 days to get vaccinated. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/08/breaking-disney-reaches-agreement-with-unions-all-unionized-cast-members-will-be-required-to-be-vaccinated-against-covid-19/ Walt Disney World is kicking off “The World's Most Magical Celebration” for it's 50th anniversary starting on October 1st! The DisGeek crew discuss the all-new attraction, Rise of the Resistance at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland in Anaheim California News Smugglers Run of Fastpass + at WDW Star Wars Disney After Dark Rise of the Resistance now open Tips for using the Virtual Queue per Mouse Planet: The easiest way to join the virtual queue is by using the existing Disneyland smartphone application. Download the app before you visit Disneyland, or, if you already have it, make sure to update to the latest version before you visit. It's also a good idea to authorize the app to send you push notifications. Once inside Disneyland, you can request to join a boarding group as soon as the park officially opens for the day. Friday, January 17 is a Magic Morning day at Disneyland. Even though Magic Morning begins at 7:00 a.m., the virtual queue will not open until the published park opening of 8:00 a.m. Joining a boarding group is very similar to selecting a digital Fastpass. Users first select their party from a list of people to whom they are already linked in the Disneyland smartphone app, then click to add their party to the boarding group. The app will give you your assigned boarding group, and let you monitor the status of boarding groups. When it's time for your boarding group to ride the attraction, the app will send an alert to your phone. At Walt Disney World, you currently have up to two hours to make your way to the the attraction. This grace period allows you plenty of time if you're in the middle of a ride, parade, or meal when you get the alert, and we expect the policy will be the same at Disneyland. If you don't use the Disneyland smartphone app, you can also join the virtual queue by going to one of several cast member-assisted stations throughout Disneyland. There, you will scan your admission media and receive a paper pass with your designated boarding group. In-park signage at the Guest Relations kiosks will display the current boarding group, so that you'll know if it's time to head back to the attraction with your paper ticket. Now for the bad news: Simply having an assigned boarding group doesn't guarantee you'll be called to ride. In the event the attraction breaks down (an expected situation for a brand new ride during the opening weeks and months), the higher boarding group numbers may not be called to ride that day (and the uncalled numbers don't roll over to the next day). Earlier this month, the New Jersey Devils hosted one of the most comprehensive, inclusive and impressive Pride Night celebrations in history. Joe Altenau, VP of Event Operations and Guest Relations for Prudential Center, talks about being an instrumental part of putting the whole thing together. From working with the team itself to organizing the speakers to the logistics and optics of the entire evening, Altenau explains why his involvement was so crucial to the night's success. A collegiate runner, we also talk about the experience of being gay athlete at George Washington University and his plan to run the Boston Marathon later this year, something I cannot comprehend. O episódio dessa semana tem como convidada uma pessoa mega gabaritada pra falar de Disney! A história dela com a Disney começou há mais de 10 anos. “The Divine was expansive, but religion was reductive. Religion attempted to reduce the Divine to a knowable quantity with which mortals might efficiently deal, to pigeonhole it once and for all so that we never had to reevaluate it. With hammers of cant and spikes of dogma, we crucified and crucified again, trying to nail to our stationary altars the migratory light of the world. Thus, since religion bore false witness to the Divine, religion was blasphemy. And once it entered into its unholy alliance with politics, it became the most dangerous and repressive force that the world has ever known.” - Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins My guest is Cole Suttle - President of the Helping Friendly Book Club http://www.helpingfriendly.com/ and we are talking about The Family on Netflix and how people use religion to scam, brainwash, control and do evil things. Who gets the ultimate pass in trust? Is anyone above the law? Are there no checks and balances for certain people? The Catholic Church has hidden pedophiles for YEARS!!!!!! So that children could continue being assaulted!!!! Not to mention every other religion with laundry lists of scandals of abuse. Here is just ONE example of fleecing in the name of the Lord --> Ephren Taylor, who fleeced some $16 million from members of church flocks in 43 states by preaching so-called "prosperity gospel." (from CNBC) Why should anyone get a pass of complete trust for uttering key phrases? Especially since fraud is RAMPANT in this area! Religion becomes a taboo topic -- when you question faith. However -- if you can't question something -- RED FLAG! If you've got nothing to hide. You've got nothing to hide. What if there is something even deeper than just scamming your neighbor.... Cole Suttle - posted about "The Family" on Netflix - and WHOA! - We are going to talk about it - and dive into what I touched on above. Cole was born to high school sweethearts and grew up in Pasedena California. He attended SMU and majored in religious studies with a double minor in Philosophy and English and is currently working on a Master of Arts in Design and Innovation at SMU. He began working for the Ritz Carlton in Aspen and returned to Dallas to build the Guest Relations department from scratch for the newly opened Dallas Ritz Carlton. He loved working for The Ritz-Carlton, they have a great philosophy and it felt like a giant laboratory for studying Human Behavior, focusing especially on the art of blowing people’s minds. He was fascinated to better understand what the difference between a 4 and a 5 star hotel was, and this led him to develop something he likes to call the Metaphysics of Hospitality. He was awarded The Ritz-Carlton Gold Standard Award (given annually to only 5 Ladies and Gentlemen worldwide) before switching from operations to Business and Executive Sales to further test out his theories. Concurrently he’s been working on his passion project, The Helping Friendly Book Club, which started in 2013 “to search for the Secrets to Eternal Joy and Never Ending Splendor” with his friends. More than anything the book club was a way for him to keep exploring the universe, to keep searching for the truth, and to keep following his curiosity with a community people instead of just on his own. Little did he know that almost 7 years and 32 books later the club would still be going strong, and is now grown into The Helping Friendly Foundation, a non profit 501c3 on a mission “to help elevate the public conversation and connect people through books in convivial ways.” Positioning ourselves at the confluence of the placemaking and the Little Free Library movements, the goal is to elevate the free-public book exchange to the level of an artform in three phases. No longer can you, Mr. Hiring manager, get away with bad behavior in an interview and think you will be able to hire the person across the desk from you. When your offer gets turned down and you think it was because of a higher offer, know that was probably not the case. It’s you, not me! Today’s Quote: "Etiquette means behaving yourself a little better than is absolutely essential." - Will Cupp Guest Bio: Diane Lee is a foremost expert in providing professionals, specifically millennial workers, with the business etiquette best practices needed to successfully present themselves in the workforce. Diane founded Street Smart Etiquette in 2011 to empower millennials beyond the theoretical, offering hands-on workshops and individualized etiquette courses to help them master business soft skills, and ultimately achieve career success. She has conducted business etiquette classes on California State University campuses at Fullerton, Long Beach and Northridge, along with El Camino, Long Beach and Pasadena community colleges. Diane has been a featured speaker for many Los Angeles and Orange County community, civic and business organizations. This venture builds on Diane’s successful career in journalism and business marketing. After graduating from California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in public relations and business, Diane made a career in Maui, Hawaii, where she played many roles in the hospitality industry and television, and was a freelance writer. In the consumer food product industry, Diane expanded the production and distribution of many Hawaiian brands throughout the Pacific Rim and western United States, and achieved millions in annual sales for her clients. After relocating back to the Los Angeles/Orange County area in 2008, Diane found herself at the Disneyland Resort, where she discovered her passion for training and development in the Guest Relations department. That’s where the light bulb went off and the urgent need for interpersonal communication skills was identified. Diane earned her credentials as a certified trainer at The Protocol School of Washington, and is also a certified training designer through the Association of Talent Development (formerly ASTD). The CEO of Empowered Living, a multi-time TEDx speaker, host of The You-est You Podcast and the author of the Get a PHD in You series, Julie Reisler helps YOU discover what lights your fire for your life. After graduation from the University of Rochester with a double major in Psychology and Public Health, she worked for Hillel. While running an international social justice program with Hillel, she visited a Panera (only 9 locations at them time) and was drawn to the community surrounding the restaurant. Julie recalls having an “inner wisdom thought” that told her to apply to work with this company. She sent in her resume and got a position as a manager—she was told to work for 5-6 months to learn operations and corporate will see if they have a position with them. She worked with Panera for 11 years and became the Director of Recruiting and Guest Relations. Her biggest take away from this experience is to trust your gut and make opportunities for yourself if you don’t see one available. “Opportunities are everywhere. This [Panera job] didn’t exist, this wasn’t a position. I just trusted my intuition.” While working with Panera, she got her Masters in Health and Wellness Coaching and Nutrition while still working full time and creating an intensive personal development program and becoming the head coach. Julie had a “light bulb” moment that told her to chase her passions for coaching. “I wanted to something where I was on fire about my purpose and passion.” She eventually left Panera to follow her passion full time and begin a podcast, write two books and further her career as a coach. “When we are listening and tuning and creating from that place passion and purpose that's really where the magic happens.” After hearing Julie’s story of chasing passions in a nonlinear career path, take a quiet moment to focus on what is your purpose. What lights your fire? What can you create to help others? Find out how Julie followed her passions for helping others find what ignite's their flames. You're never too old or too inexperienced to succeed in business, if you have a vision and the courage to try. That's one of the key takeaways from this week's Monday Morning Radio interview with Jan Erickson and Jon Thomas, the husband-and-wife duo who launched Janska Clothing in 2003 - when both of them were already in their 50s. Since then, Janksa, which specializes in making women's outwear that is both fashionable and comfortable, has beat the odds. The company will earn nearly $3 million this year and Jan was named a U.S. Small Business Administration "Small Business Person of the Year". Jan and Jon are interviewed by Wizard Academy faculty member Dean Rotbart. Dean and wealth management expert David Biondo are co-hosts of the weekly Business Unconventional radio news magazine broadcast on 710 KNUS AM in Denver. Also participating in this week's interviews is Talya Rotbart, Dean's wife, who also serves as Director of Guest Relations for Business Unconventional. Be sure to follow B.
