Welcome to our motorsports podcast where we discuss F1, IndyCar, IMSA, NASCAR, our own racing adventures, and some other adventures!Franz Hermann, aka Max Verstappen, takes the win in Imola with a fantastic move around the outside of Oscar Piastri into T2 on lap 1 of the race! Max closes the gap to both McLaren drivers after Piastri had gone on a 3 race win streak. Although it was very controlled from the front, it was a good race with a few key moments for strategy to go good or bad for some. Two yellows (one VSC and the other a full SC) shook the field up and provided Ferrari an ample opportunity to make up some ground after a poor qualifying effort the day before.IndyCar had it's qualifying days for the greatest spectacle in motorsports this past weekend where none other than Robert Schwartzman driving for Prema took the pole! This is the first time since 1983 that a rookie is starting on pole for the Indy 500. Congrats to Robert and Prema on a fantastic effort! Drama unfolded on the second day of qualifying where Penske was found to be in violation of the rules. They've subsequently had two of their three cars moved to the rear of the field and at the time of our recording of this episode we had not yet received the news that Penske has fired three top employees within the team to make a statement that this is being taken seriously after not just this incident but also from the Push to Pass incident last year as well. Too many mistakes costing the team valuable points in the championship and also leaving a poor stain on the organization.Coming up this weekend: NASCAR is at Charlotte, IndyCar has the Indy 500, F1 is at Monaco.

In this episode of No Film School, host GG Hawkins sits down with Robert Schwartzman, producer of The Last Showgirl and co-founder of Utopia, to discuss the evolving landscape of independent cinema. As a filmmaker, distributor, and problem solver, Robert shares insights on how indie filmmakers can take control of their distribution, why the industry is shifting toward self-releasing, and what's next for Utopia. In this episode, No Film School's Jason Hellerman and Robert Schwartzman discuss: The evolving landscape of indie film distribution and the role of technology in direct-to-audience releases How Utopia is working to eliminate middlemen and empower filmmakers The importance of theatrical releases for indie films, despite industry shifts The inspiration behind The Last Showgirl and why Las Vegas was the perfect setting How finding creative solutions—from locations to costumes—can elevate a low-budget film Why international filmmakers have a competitive edge in today's market Memorable Quotes: “I think filmmakers need to also get hip to the idea of like, oh, there's all these places I can sell my film, but I still need to reach them. Like no one's gonna just give me an audience, I need to find them.” (18:35) “The playing field is so level right now, that's what's so exciting about it. Like it's anyone's game. People just have to be willing to play it.” (20:55) “There will come a time when a movie is self-released using these new technologies and it will be nominated for something significant… That's when people are really going to come around to it.” (22:50) “You're not going to get everything you want in filmmaking. The key is knowing what you absolutely need and what you can live without.” (51:07) “If you shoot a movie quickly, the opportunity cost for people goes down.” (55:01) Guest: Robert Schwartzman – Producer of The Last Showgirl, co-founder of Utopia, and filmmaker known for Dreamland and The Unicorn. Twenty years ago, one of the most indelible movie characters of recent decades was born when Napoleon Dynamite premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. From Vote for Pedro T-shirts to the pet llama Tina (aka: “Fat Lard”) and a seriously iconic dance number, Napoleon Dynamite has earned a top slot in the pop culture canon of the 21st century. This week, Cooper and Tabitha speak with Jared Hess who, together with his co-writer and wife Jerusha Hess, is the force behind Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre (co-written with Mike White), Masterminds, and more. Jared shares his deep love for Hal Needham's Rad (1988), a classic ‘80's teen flick about competitive BMX racing and a bike battle between local kids and the professional riders who come to town. We learn a bit about director Hal Needham, the highest paid stunt double of his time who directed action-packed classics like Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and The Cannonball Run (1981). Plus, how Rad's soundtrack featuring The Sparks, opening sequence cinematography by Robert Schwartzman, and a curious activity dubbed “ass-sliding” make this a feel-good sports movie for kids of any generation. The Princess Diaries is a 2001 coming of age Romantic Comedy directed by Garry Marshall. This is the story of Mia Thermopolis played by Anne Hathaway. Mia is a highschool student in San Francisco, definitely not super cool she only has two friends Lilly played by Heather Matarazzo and her older brother Michael played by Robert Schwartzman. There is something Mia does not know however and we learn very quickly, technically she is the princess of the country of Genovia. This film also features Mandy Moore as the classic highschool villain Lana. Mia has a grandmother the Queen Regent of Genovia played by the great Julie Andrews. And a point of fact regarding how big of a smash hit this film was. This grossed 165 million dollars at the box office on a budget of around 26. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on the show—two British Invasion legends: Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent of The Zombies. The band formed in the early ‘60s in St Albans, and remarkably, they are still out on the road and making new music. The band's new album is called Different Game, and it's out on Cooking Vinyl Records on March 31st. The album is being released in advance of a new feature documentary as well, called Hung Up On A Dream, directed by musician and filmmaker Robert Schwartzman in collaboration with Tom Hanks' Playtone media company, slated for release later in 2023. We've had the pleasure of seeing The Zombies a handful of times—unlike so many of their peers, they're still truly active. How do you sustain that kind of run? That was our focus in this chat, which also touches on their classic single “Tell Her No” and landmark LP Odessey and Oracle, their relationship to super fan Tom Petty, and of course, we had to ask them about the fake Zombies that toured in the wake of the band's late ‘60s breakup.  Transmissions is produced in partnership with Talkhouse Podcast Network. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its Patreon supporters. We'll be back next Wednesday with a new episode featuring Sharon Van Etten.

On the show today is LA native, music artist, filmtrepreneur, filmmaker and actor, Robert Schwartzman. Robert comes from a long line of musicians and film talents. He's related to industry names like Nicolas Cage (cousin), Sophia Coppola (cousin), Jason Schwartzman (brother), Francis Ford Coppola (uncle), etc. Growing up with these influencers, he ultimately went the same route - acting, studying film editing, and directing music videos. His career tipped slightly towards his passion for musical he became the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the band Rooney. We did a deep dive into Robert's newest venture, AltaVOD, a self-distribution platform for feature films. It's a split structure, direct-to-consumer video-on-demand platform that eliminates the middleman (buyer) to support creators directly. I put Robert to the test and asked him hard questions about AltaVOD and he passed with flying colors. When he is not building tech companies to help filmmakers, Robert has been known to act a bit. He began his acting career in Sophia Coppola's short film Lick the Star and her directorial debut The Virgin Suicides. Even though these were Robert's first acting experiences, he had already learned much about behind-the-camera technical skills. He shadowed and learned from Sophia and other relatives as much as he could.A clique of school girls devise a secret plan that they code-name "Lick the Star".The Virgin Suicides is about a group of male friends who become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents in suburban Detroit in the mid-1970s.In 2001, director Gary Marshell offered Roberts a role on box office success, The Princess Diaries as Michael Moscovitz, Lilly's older brother, harbors romantic feelings for Mia (Anne Hathaway).Mia Thermopolis has just found out that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. With her friends Lilly and Michael Moscovitz in tow, she tries to navigate through the rest of her sixteenth year. He's utilized his music career to produce soundtracks for shows like Late Night With Seth Meyers, Pretty Little Liars, Switched At Birthed, Demi Lovato: Live at Wembley Arena, Princess Diaries, and many others. It was cool chatting with Robert and bringing you guys (tribe) new avenues and resources to share your work cost-effectively. Making a movie is like making a good stew. Sure, that may not be the first analogy you’d jump to while racking your filmmaking ethos, but for Robert Schwartzman director of The Unicorn, one of 2018’s best comedies, it just makes sense. Every good stew requires fresh ingredients. Your cast and crew are the meat and potatoes. But that stew can't just be about the ingredients. Without the proper mixture, it would just be a bunch of vegetables. You've got balance them out in a way so the flavors come together as a harmonious whole. And that’s the real job of the director. They’re the head chef. The captain. If you walked onto the set of a truly great chef, you'd find yourself in a sacred place that exudes the right collaborative energy. Perhaps the simplest way to achieve this is by treating everyone with the same level of respect, making sure every actor on set knows every crew member, how they contribute to the cooking process, and vice versa. Schwartzman erases the divide between the cast and crew, and focuses on the fact that everyone is just a person, working together to create something great. When you hear how Lauren Lapkus, Nick Rutherford, Maya Kazan and Darrell Britt-Gibson speak about their director in this podcast, you'll gain a better appreciation for just how important maintaining this type of atmosphere is. No Film School producer Jon Fusco sat down with them at SXSW 2018, for a conversation that is often hilarious and consistently insightful.
