On this episode of the Story Engine Podcast, I'll discuss the concept of 'The Cost of Getting Through The Day' and how it relates to personal growth and creativity. I share personal experiences with anxiety and the feeling of just getting through the day, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and reframing fear as a tool for growth. I encourage listeners to create a vision for their future that excites them and to actively work towards it, rather than succumbing to survival mode.    In This Episode The cost of doing nothing can lead to regret and shame. Anxiety-driven choices often result in unproductive patterns. Naming fears can help in addressing them effectively. Reframing fear as a tool can empower personal growth. Creating a vision for the future is crucial for motivation. Daily practices like journaling can help focus intentions. Recognizing small progress is important for self-acknowledgment. Understanding the roots of fear can lead to healing. Survival mode can hinder creativity and fulfillment. Embracing creativity is essential for a meaningful life. The message was delivered on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION: This service emphasizes the importance of compassion and human connection in a world increasingly marked by indifference and isolation. Rev. Randy Lewis reflects on the dangers of becoming desensitized to the struggles of others, driven by mistrust, past experiences, or compassion fatigue. The message encourages listeners to be aware of their neighbors' needs, to remain open-hearted despite past hurts, and to seek deeper human connections by both offering and asking for help. It underscores that showing up for others, even in small ways, builds stronger communities and renews our sense of shared humanity. SUBSCRIBE TO WATCH OTHER VIDEOS: @allsoulsunitarian WANT TO LISTEN? Exploring American Inheritance: A Tale of Oppression and Continued Harm to our Native Americans. In this episode of 'Tilting at Windmills,' host Mike Donahue interviews award-winning journalist and author Rebecca Claren about her latest book, 'The Cost of Free Land: Jews, Lakota, and an American Inheritance.' The book delves into the intertwined histories of Jews and Native Americans in the context of American colonialism and explores the complex legacy of escaping oppression only to become part of an oppressive system in America. They discuss the ongoing harm to Native Americans, the responsibility of current generations to rectify past and present injustices, and the concept of being a 'good ancestor' by acknowledging and working to remedy the benefits derived from the harm done to Native peoples. The conversation also addresses the challenges of grappling with America's colonial past, the need for a more truthful telling of American history, and suggests ways for individuals to contribute to repairing the harms caused. Additionally, the episode explores cultural sensitivity, assimilation, and offers tangible steps for personal remediation towards Native nations.00:00 Exploring the American Story of Oppression and Inheritance01:07 Introducing 'The Cost of Freeland' with Rebecca Claren01:33 The Interwoven Histories of Jews and Native Americans05:57 The Ongoing Harm and the Quest for Reparation14:42 Cultural Sensitivity, Empathy, and Learning from History35:26 Personal Remediation and Steps Towards Healing37:27 Drawing Parallels: From Native American Lands to Global Conflicts40:28 Media Recommendations and Closing Thoughts

(It also inspired the Adam Curtis docuseries by the same name).  The term describes the final years of the Soviet Union when the system was failing, everyone knew the system was rotted from within by greed and corruption, yet people carried on, the broken system becoming the new normal. When our government can easily be shutdown by a Kremlin-backed, proudly fascist party, while its leader continues to call for violence, walking free after having tried to violently overthrow our government, and disinformation echo chambers on the far-right and far-left openly mock and attack the victims and targets of that fascism, America has reached HyperNormalisation. And the priority of the business elite is to protect their immorally low-tax rate and hoard their wealth, following in the footsteps of those who helped bring Hitler and Pinochet to power.  Elon Musk's X has become the biggest outlet of Russian disinformation, according to the EU. That's “mission accomplished” for the American far-right and its Russian backers. Formerly reliable so-called “resistance” accounts on Twitter that once led the way combating Trump and Putin have succumbed to self-censorship and catering to Musk's oppressive algorithms like they're an authoritarian regime. This causes them to fall silent on ringing the alarm on the stakes to all of us for stopping Russia's genocide in Ukraine, LGBTQ+ rights that are being scapegoated through genocidal rhetoric, and more. You know things are bad when even Ralph Nader is ringing the alarm of fascism and wants to campaign for the Democrats!  Since the beginning of the show, the focus has been on grassroots power–the most reliable power we have left. Together, we made 15,000 phone calls to get John Fetterman into the Senate, and he's leading the way against corruption and greed. And even back then, the residents of Staten Island didn't much like being forced to take immigrants who they didn't particularly want,” Anbinder told me. “We tend to idealize our own immigrant ancestors and think they're different than immigrants today. But what you find when you look at the 400-year history of immigrant New York is that every generation of immigrants comes to New York for the same reasons, has the same experiences, is hated by the people who are already in New York, and yet always they end up succeeding. And so every group is despised for a time, but every group ends up becoming an accepted New Yorker. We just forget that, generation after generation after generation.” Source:The Biggest Lesson of the Migrant Crisis https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/09/the-biggest-lesson-of-the-migrant-crisis.html

In this episode we talk tech, power, and the endless hell of phone storage with sociologist Professor Gina Neff. As the Executive Director of the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at Cambridge, and the Professor of Technology and Society at Oxford, she briskly rejects the mythology of a ‘lone genius' in Silicon Valley coding every aspect of our daily lives. Instead, she champions those she calls the ‘unsung heroes' of innovation – essentially everyone struggling to make a “better, faster, new way of working” actually … work. Her academic research spans industries as diverse as fashion, construction, and healthcare, and she's equally at home online, winning a coveted Webby award for her beginner's guide ‘The A to Z of AI'. Her love of a good data story well told is anything but dry, and her pandemic project is still flourishing. Dr. Scott Stephenson, President and CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution, discussed the museum, which celebrated its second anniversary in April.  He described its founding, based on the collection of the Valley Forge Historical Society, begun Episcopal Priest W. Herbert Burke, with the purchase at auction of General George Washington's military war tent.  Now the cornerstone of the museum, it's surrounded by a permanent collection and objects on loan from private collectors and families. He discussed how the museum presents artifacts in accessible, interactive ways and humanizes the stories to attract contemporary audiences.  He spoke on the museum's efforts to relate the stories of the native peoples, women and people of color, using diaries and personal papers.   We discussed the museum's more scholarly work, too, its archives, its continuing search for artifacts and its upcoming consortium.   The museum will present its first international exhibit in the fall, 'The Cost of the Revolution: The Life and Death of an Irish Soldier;'  looking at the war's impact on a soldier fighting for the British. Finally, a look at upcoming events and Dr. Stephenson invites everyone to attend a 'History After Hours' event, cocktails, conversation and hands-on activities after the museum's regular hours. Just when you thought you couldn't randomly end a character on Lost we have the 5th episode of the 3rd season to present to you today as Mr Eko finds out about The Cost Of Living in an episode that perhaps is more frustrating than it should be. Why does AAA just phone it in during this episode? Why does the flashback feel so wasted? How good does the cheeseburger look? How great Juliet and can Noah feel a bit of love for her yet? Does Mr Eko even speak during this episode? What scene actually is really great that we will remember? And why do we feel so cheated with the death of Mr Eko in this episode? It's frustrating and sad, so listen and try and not feel the same way!★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
