Today on Taplines, meet Annie Johnson. She's a longtime homebrewer, the self-avowed Queen of Beer, and an old source of mine from way back. Annie has been brewing her own beer since the mid-'90s, and winning first-place ribbons for ‘em nearly as long. The woman has enough these days to make a damn cape out of ‘em — and she did. We talked about that, and so much more. Don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

How do you provide a better, more thoughtful training and adoption process to your reps? My guest this week is Annie Johnson, Revenue Enablement Manager at Sayari. Annie is going explain why it's okay to slow down, or delay a role out, and how this is advantageous to you and your team. "Maybe there is a change in the business model, and that's big, your people are trying to keep up with their calls and roles in the middle of changes, both big and small. So, it's very important, even if you have to delay that change a couple days or weeks, to have everything thought through and give your team time to attend the trainings they need. Slow down, the business will be ok. If your people get flustered then they are not going to feel good, and that is going to translate into your sales and culture."
We're headed into that time of year where people tend to reflect, take stock and then look forward. Our Story There's a long, strange tradition in Irish mythology and folklore in which a powerful man tries to steal a valuable cow from an old woman (cailleach). Maybe it's not so strange… It's just one more example of how independent older women are considered a threat to the status quo. Marisa Goudy tells the story of Mona, the Cailleach who lived upon a hill that bore her name (Cnoc na Móna/Knocknamona). The original tale, found in a footnote in an 1860 publication of the Ossianic Society, a translation of a medieval Irish manuscript called the Imtheacht na Tromdhaimhe, includes few details. Marisa's version imagines a new ending for tale that originally ends in a wise woman's murder and the slaughter of a sacred cow. Our Guest Lee Rankin is a farmer and founder of https://applehillfarmnc.com/ (Apple Hill Farm), a successful and award-winning first-generation farm in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. She is an advocate for farmers through her leadership and involvement at a local and state level. She speaks, teaches and consults frequently as a first-generation woman farmer on the topic of alpacas, entrepreneurship, and the benefits of diversifying your farm portfolio through agritourism. Lee is the author of https://amzn.to/3BwPtp6 (Cookin' Up a Storm, The Life and Recipes of Annie Johnson) now in its second edition. She is currently looking for a home for her memoir, Farm Family, the story of her journey of starting Apple Hill Farm as a solo Mom. Our Conversation The power of being a woman with animals and land. In Lee's experience where the majority of farmers are men, she's so aware of the feminine expression of her farming, including a spiritual, sacred sense of “knowing.” Choosing when to preserve and when to innovate, as storytellers and as famers. Preserving the Randall Lineback breed of cattle; there are only 1000 across the US. Lee's story of moving to what would become her alpaca farm in Appalachia with her one year-old son and a golden retriever. Stories of animal rescues, and also of animal passages. A powerful reframe on death and how this story could have ended as the original version did, with the death of Mona and the cow. Our desire to sanitize the death parts and give everyone a happy ending. This episode pairs so well with https://knotworkstorytelling.com/episode/boinn-remembered-laura-murphy (Laura Murphy's story of the goddess Boinn) who was closely associated with cattle and the concept of imbas forosnai, the inspiration that illuminates. Overcoming Racism and Renewing the Promise of America “We can be different and united—the value of the American experiment is contingent on the truth of this proposition.” —Theodore Roosevelt Johnson III Dr. Theodore R. Johnson is the great-grandson of sharecroppers who, unfathomably, believed in what Johnson calls “the Promise,” that we Americans are created equal and that “each of us will respect and defend the rights and liberty of others.” Willie and Annie Johnson so believed in that promise that they named Dr. Johnson's grandfather and namesake Theodore Roosevelt Johnson, after our 26th president invited the first black man, Booker T. Washington, to the White House for dinner. Dr. Johnson shares his family's deep reverence for this American experiment, but also believes our failure to bind together around our highest ideals is an existential threat to our future. Join us as Dr. Johnson makes an invitation—and a challenge—to all of us, born of lived experience as a black son of the American south and love of this country he took an oath to preserve. Facilitated by Dr. Nashid Madyun, Executive Director of Florida Humanities. Dr. Theodore R. Johnson is a public policy scholar and military veteran who served as a White House Fellow and speechwriter to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Ted is currently a Senior Fellow and Director of the Fellows Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at the NYU School of Law. We talk a lot on this show about how to get started farming right now, even if you don't have the farm that you ultimately see in your dreams. Usually when we speak of this we are talking about marketing some fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc. from a back yard operation or possibly something like aquaculture or hydroponics. But, what if you want to raise livestock? Is there anything that you can do on a small piece of ground that would be profitable? Our guest today, Annie Johnson, is going to talk to us about doing exactly that with pigs. Annie's has a very interesting story that has come full circle. Her grandfather used to raise pigs on their families farm about ten miles away from where she currently lives in Cambridge, Illinois. However, nobody in the family raised a pig for about 20 years until she got started at the age of 14. The family farm is still there, and that is where Annie raises her pigs. However, the crop ground on the farm is in the CRP program, so it is not being farmed. That means that Annie only had a small piece of ground to be able to begin her livestock enterprise. Pigs were the answer for her, and direct marketing was the business model. Annie has been able to pre-arrange the sale of her pigs to multiple customers, and because of her unique story and the way she is raising them she can charge a premium for her pork. Through direct marketing, Annie has been able to increase what she receives for her pigs. However, she is being just as innovative on the other end to keep expenses low. Instead of feeding a boar all year long, she is using artificial insemination to breed her sows. There is an old grain cart on the property that can safely hold a lot of pig feed. So, Annie buys feed in bulk and has that cart filled to save money on feed costs, and it works! Annie has also experimented with different breeds and is now raising Duroc's. Her customers prefer the meat, and the Duroc's work be in her operation. So, she is producing a very desirable product through the most efficient means she has at her disposal. Annie has just graduated high school and has just been awarded a state proficiency for her efforts in pork production. She is going to take all of this experience and knowledge with her to college where she will be studying to be an Ag teacher. When she finishes college, she will bring it all with her to the classroom, and she will be inspiring Ag students for years to come!

“I always figured if the professional killed the spirit to do it at home, then I would never do it professionally, but luckily that didn’t happen.” Annie Johnson loves homebrewing. The award-winning homebrewer has worked professionally in brewing, but despite turning her passion into a career, she's never given up that sense of creative fulfillment and excitement that comes with each new batch. The self-described “snob” may refer to herself as the “queen of decoction,” but she’s also quick to embrace time-saving methods such as brewing with malt extract. Learning is a constant for Johnson, and whether it’s unlocking the key to historical brewing problems through a process of reverse engineering, or exploring the flavor and color impacts of wild foraged ingredients, she’s always following an idea or chasing a particular flavor memory in her brewing projects. In this episode, she discusses: Concepting beers with a special-ingredient-first approach Brewing with foraged ingredients and herbs like bay leaf, nettles, and mushrooms Building subtlety and restraint into ingredient-forward beers Achieving positive effects with ingredients by adding at high krausen Taking a cautious approach to toxicity in foraged ingredients Adhering to traditional methods for traditional beers Considering visual impact in recipe design How the process of studying to become a beer judge improved her brewing An inspirational voice in the world of brewing, Johnson serves as a great reminder to all of us that success in brewing isn’t about scale or profit, it’s about passion and personal fulfillment. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): As the brewing industry’s premier choice for glycol chilling, G&D Chillers has set the standard on quality, service, reliability and dedication to their customer’s craft. This 4-part series comes from an interview I had the honor of conducting with a lady named Annie Johnson, born in Granada, Mississippi 1949. Growing up she was a sharecropper's daughter and here she tells me what happened back in the day. Annie's strength and judgement of what was right and wrong struck me, and with Annie's consent, I'm thrilled that the world will hear these stories today. Listen as Annie generously shares memories from her childhood back in the late 50's, early 60's, the struggles she and her family overcame to survive, and how Annie asks the question 'When DID slavery end?' These stories have never been heard before now.
Northern Waters Land Trust is a non-profit conservation organization working to protect water quality and preserve environmentally sensitive lands and water resources. Formerly the Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation, they serve the watersheds in Cass, Crow Wing, Hubbard and Aitkin Counties of Minnesota, and represents 2,235 lakes, 3,400 miles of rivers and streams, and nearly 4.2 million acres. John Sumption and Annie Johnson from the NWLT join Heidi Holtan and John Latimer for the first conservation conversation to be airing monthly on the Tuesday Morning Show. They talk about their organization, how they got started and who they represent. NWLT helps property owners through Conservation Easements, an agreement that limits changes on landowner’s property, and Fee Title Acquisitions, a transaction by a landowner who elects to sell or donate land for the purpose of habitat protection and public use. Heidi shares her story as a property owner with a Conservation Easement on her land.

I’m Evan Rail, and you’re listening to the Good Beer Hunting podcast. It’s September 2020, and the coronavirus pandemic is still raging on—and nowhere more obviously than in the United States, which has about 25% of the world’s reported cases, even though it is only home to about 4% of the world’s population. Because of that infection rate, for the first time in memory, U.S. citizens haven’t been able to travel to Europe, with almost all of the European Union countries currently closed to travelers coming from the United States. So when it comes to beer, what are we missing out on? Although I’m originally from California, I’ve been living in Europe and writing about food and drink here for over 20 years. Normally, I’d spend a good part of my summer showing North American brewers and beer lovers around Prague, Czech Republic—my adopted hometown—or bumping into folks from back home at beer festivals and pubs in places like Brussels, Berlin, and Munich. I started thinking about what beer lovers really get out of a trip to Europe—what they’re missing out on, in other words, while the pandemic makes travel impossible, at least for now. For this podcast I reached out to four friends in the U.S. who have spent quality time here in the Old World, including Joe Stange, managing editor of Craft Beer & Brewing magazine and the author of Good Beer Guide Belgium; and Annie Johnson, the 2013 American Homebrewers Association Homebrewer of the Year and a BJCP National Judge. I also talked to Aaron Johns, whose company, Taste Local Beer, used to run beer tours in Prague until he moved back to the West Coast a few years ago; and Good Beer Hunting’s own Jamaal Lemon, who toured across a bunch of European beer countries after winning a competition for bloggers from World of Beer in 2016. I wanted to ask these folks what they missed about beer in Europe, and what they thought was valuable about their time here. I wanted to know what they learned and what they thought beer fans might miss out on if they just read an article or watched a video from Europe instead of traveling there themselves. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I wanted to know why this situation sucks.

This week co-founder of Reuben's Brews Adam Robbings sits down with Annie Johnson (2013 AHA Homebrewer of the Year), Larry Rock (Sales Representative, Reuben's Brews), and Rodney Hines (co-founder of Metier Brewing) for a panel discussion about diversity in the brewing industry. How can we all effect a lasting change in our industry, to ensure that we don't let the momentum and opportunity of the current moment pass us by?
Cheers, craft beer community! We're incredibly excited to welcome Marcus Baskerville on the show, head brewer and co-founder of Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio, TX. We first learned of Marcus through the Black is Beautiful beer collaboration; he's the creator and recipe designer for the entire project. Before we discuss the collaboration, we talk about Marcus's history as a beer drinker, and what sucked him into craft beer. We also find out how being super competitive led him to start brewing his own beer. After winning some awards for his home-brew and selling out local festivals, he left his bank job and signed on as an assistant brewer and learned what-not-to-do.Turning to the Black is Beautiful beer collaboration, we talk about the inspiration behind the project: (as of June 23, 2020), over 800 breweries are signed on from all 50 US states and 14 countries. Marcus explains the importance of the message behind the beer and why the message needs to continue beyond a collaboration. He talks about his inspiration behind the project, and how he was able to get it up and public in so little time. And there's even a home-brew version that people can brew at home that was developed by champion home brewer Annie Johnson.Turning to the craft beer community, we talk about how the San Antonio and Texas beer community has embraced Black is Beautiful. We also discuss how supportive the community has been throughout the pandemic, and how the brewery has had to pivot to keep up with the challenges from COVID-19. We wrap up our conversation with a round of rapid-fire questions: brewer edition.A huge thank you to Marcus Basketville for spending time with us during a busy week of promoting and brewing. You can follow Weathered Souls Brewing on Instagram and Facebook @WeatheredSoulsBrewing and @weatheredsouls_ on Twitter. If you're in San Antonio, head over to the brewery at 606 Embassy Oaks #500 and have a pint!Don't forget to check us out at www.theunfilteredgentlemen.com and to follow us on our social medias for some great beer shots: www.facebook.com/theunfilteredgentlemen, @unfilteredgents on twitter, and TheUnfilteredGentlemen on Instagram! Marcus Baskerville, co-founder of Weathered Souls Brewing Company, joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras today on the Brew Ha Ha podcast. Marcus Baskerville's project "Black" is Beautiful is featured in this article in Forbes Magazine. entitled "Weathered Souls’ Black Is Beautiful Campaign Shows Racial Solidarity In Craft Beer." Weathered Souls Brewing Company will celebrate its fourth anniversary this November. They are located in San Antonio, TX. Marcus grew up in northern California. They have been the #1 brewer in San Antonio for the last couple of years. They are known for their Stout beer and they have a lot of local support. There are less than 30 black-owned breweries in America and Weathered Souls Brewing Co. is one of them. They toast with Pliny for President 2020 from Russian River Brewing. The Black is Beautiful collaboration is up to almost 600 participating breweries around the world. He has created a recipe for a Stout beer, his specialty. Breweries can download the recipe and either follow it carefully or adapt it. The plan is for breweries to donate the profits locally to organizations supporting police reform and social justice. The idea is for this project to start conversations and projects on a local basis in as many places as possible. Marcus says that he has found the brewing industry to be inclusive and welcoming. Beer can be, "...the first step in creating change." He remembers being inspired by Annie Johnson winning Home Brewer of the Year. Visit the Russian River Brewing Co. for updated opening hours and to see the menu. (707) 545-BEER.

The second day of the Great American Beer Festival has begun. The beers are flowing and the people are here to receive them. We are drinking some great beers and speaking with some great people. One of which is Annie Johnson from Pico Brew. It was a blast interviewing her. We spoke with some brewers and many patrons to get their thoughts on craft beer and GABF. There is about a 50 seconds of dead space at the 17 minute mark. Someone pulled the mic plug from the recorder. However,it picks right up after that. Our time at #HomebrewCon continues and today’s show features one of our favorite guests to date: Annie Johnson! It's Episode 12 and we're announcing our next experiment amongst other things! We start with listener feedback - everyone was intrigued by and puzzled by the results of our First Wort Hop experiment. So were we! At the pub, we talk about how the results of the GC election with lots of teasing that's not meant to be taken seriously! We announce that we have "plans" for Homebrew Con in Baltimore in June. Denny gets to rant and rave at the moon with his latest pet peeve and Drew shares an awesome example of how sometimes the customer isn't right at all. We make a quick stop in the brewery to talk about getting your beer can on Then to the lab where we dig into every homebrewer's experience. You go to the homebrew shop full of good intentions, buy some grain and mill it. Then you can't brew for a month or two - is your grain still good? Oh bother - guess we'll find out, won't we? We go to the Pacific Northwest Homebrewers Conference where Denny interviews Annie Johnson - one of our favorite brewers. Not only has she won two amazing brewing achievements - AHA Homebrewer of the Year and Pilsner Urquell's Masterhomebrewer, but she manages to keep a playful side to her brewing. Listen and learn! (Including her secret obsession) After Annie, we hit the books for a couple of questions, including one that really made us do some research to avoid our knee jerk "are you kidding us?" reaction. That was awesome! Denny drops his quick tip about being a yeast abuser. And then Denny talks about his soon to be assembled chicken coop and the artisans behind it. Drew then drops two things - Billy Dee is back as Colt 45's spokesman and Sweden has a phone number. Yup, Sweden. It's awesome. Here's how you can use that....HSI shows you the alpha acid loss in the hops over 6 months at a 68F storage temperature. As an example of how it works, let's say you have some hops that start at 10% AA and have an HSI of .250. That means that in 6 months of storage at 68F, the AA% will drop to 7.5%. But since we all know that degradation of hops also depends on temperature, if those hops are stored at 28F, the AA is 9.0%. In effect, each 10F drop in strage temp equates to about .5% AA increase. There's more to it than this, though, and in the future we hope to have someone from YCH on to talk about HSI.
