In this #PREPPED SPECIAL, Naka is joined by Carolyn Carpentiere of CCYOGA to discuss the added benefits of yoga and breathing techniques when it comes to SAT and ACT preparation. The episode concludes (starting at 18:05) with TWO quick guided practices for listeners to engage in before testing! Mindfulness practices such as yoga and breathing techniques help adjust the body's response to stress over time. Mindfulness can actually increase grey matter and can reduce the size of the amygdala, which is the area of the brain that processes autonomic responses associated with fear and anxiety. Naka and Carolyn talk about the physiological effects of mindfulness and how to incorporate these practices into our education and test-taking. Especially on standardized tests, getting distracted, feeling anxious, or even rethinking problems from previous sections can be a huge detriment to a score, so the ability to ground oneself and be present in the moment with full focus is an invaluable asset for testing (not to mention for life in general)!SHOW NOTESCarolyn Carpentiere cal.carpentiere@gmail.comYOUTUBE PRACTICEShttps://www.youtube.com/@CarolynCarpentiereFree SAT Preview @ preppedpodcast.com TestTakers ttprep.com

As we get ready for the launch of season two next week on Safe, Welcoming, and Inclusive Schools, season one concludes with a wellness discussion focused on students. Sara Roadman, first grade teacher in Eugene, has been practicing mindfulness with students since 2019. She uses many different mindfulness strategies including eyebreaks, noticing what's around you, yoga, one-minute guided meditations, affirmation meditations, and breathing exercises. By adding these strategies to the daily routine, students have grown to be very comfortable with mindfulness. Most of her students know 10 yoga poses! Sara also discusses the power of appreciation circles where students simply make eye contact with other students and appreciate the opportunity to be in in-person school; some of her young students haven't been in face-to-face school since preschool. Sara has also found that these mindfulness techniques help kids with Covid-related worries and anxieties that are unique to today's students. Than integrating breathing to meditation later on in the course and not early on. 22:26 – The feeling of having to do something to find that inner peace. We really connect over coming from a very physically active and mentally active backgrounds. If it's going for a run, going to the gym, practicing yoga poses, or a strong breathing practice. 30 min Yoga Breathing Exercises For Stress This 30 minute hatha yoga class will open your body to breath. We will focus on releasing your spine in twists and sidebends to open your body to deeper and more organic breathing patterns. Over the next several weeks our yoga practice is going to be inspired by Lorin Roche’s translation of the Radiance Sutras. I highly recommend you purchase this book. The radiance sutras are 112 techniques for enlightenment through everyday lived experience. Each of the sutras is a way of attending to the divine energy that is always flowing through us and of which we are made. It is a conversation between the God and Goddess, Shiva and Shakti. They are the divine masculine and feminine, inseparable partners and their favourite dwelling place is in the human heart. As we take time to immerse ourselves in these sutras over the next several weeks our bodies, minds, emotions, energy and spirit will awaken to the sacred that permeates our entire being. It is important to note that the radiance sutras are not a to do list or a manual or a how to, but is a relationship that will emerge between your Self and your Lived Experience. As we delve into the sutras you will hear that they are playful and exploratory. They are meant to be explored by your sense perceptions. Allow yourself to be lighthearted as you open yourself to this divine exploration. Be serious about taking yourself lightly as my friend Anita Goa says. Lorin Roche says, “Through play, find your way, freedom, revelation, illumination.” He suggests that this text will open you to being at home in the universe, “to bring radical acceptance to every intense experience, ever sensual delight, every ordinary moment, as a gateway into deep and intimate contact with the forces of life.” So without further ado, let’s go “deeply into experience, embracing it fully without reservation.”

When we are born, we naturally breathe diaphragmatically, allowing for a full oxygen exchange. As we age, we lose touch with how to breathe. This causes us to hold onto stress and anxiety. Relearning and practicing proper breathing patterns will trigger the body's normal relaxation response, bringing us back to a state of rest and calm. Diaphragmatic breathing also maximizes the oxygen flowing in our bloodstream for reduction of stress and better health. In this episode, you will begin lying on your belly, then on your back, and finally seated, all while being guided to take deep, diaphragmatic breaths.
The benefits of slow and deep breathing abound. When we draw the attention to the breath, we encourage a calm state by activating the parasympathetic nervous system - the part of the nervous system responsible for the rest and digest state. If however, we breathe quickly, the opposing sympathetic nervous system takes over, encouraging a fight or flight response. A calm resting state leads to clear and informed thinking, better focus, and more time to respond to life rather than constantly react without control.Choose to lie down comfortably or sit in mountain pose. Notice the rise and fall of your abdomen to your chest as you inhale and exhale respectfully, breathing through your nose. After a few breaths, begin a comfortable count, equal on the inhale and exhale. Slowly lengthen the count, inhaling to your highest number and exhaling to that same number. Notice your physical, mental, and energetic sensations without judgment.

I feel I've let you down. I've hosted pretty much every renowned breathing expert in the world on this podcast, and yet most of my listeners are still not sure exactly how yoga breathing works. On this week's show, my goal is to break down the fundamentals of yoga breathing in a way that you can easily remember and apply to your practice. ------------ Listen & Learn: How all breathing practices are either water, whiskey, or coffee Why it's easy to get confused with gurus and brand names Why most of us over-breathe (and what to do about it) Why the most popular breathing techniques tend to be too extreme How to incorporate all three breathing patterns into your life ABOUT THE HOST Lucas Rockwood is a yoga teacher trainer, digital nomad, green food junkie, and serial entrepreneur. With a formal yoga training background in Hot Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Gravity Yoga, and the Yoga Trapeze, Lucas has studied with some of the most well-respected teachers on the planet. His most influential teachers (all of whom he studied with personally) include Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Paul Dallaghan, Alex Medin, Gabriel Cousens MD, and SN Goenka. The company has gone from strength-to-strength and is now an internationally-renowned nutrition, education, and publishing organization serving 81 countries. In 2013, Lucas founded YOGABODY Fitness, a revolutionary new yoga studio business model that pays teachers a living wage and demystifies yoga by making the mind-body healing benefits of the practice accessible to everyone.
