I'm excited to share this week's Live Well Be Well episode with you all! I had Dr. Dan Nicolau join me to explore the fascinating intersection of our brain and immune system - a relationship that could completely transform how we understand health and disease."Neuroimmunology" - the powerful two-way communication between our brain and immune system. We often think of these systems separately, but Dan reveals how they're constantly in dialogue, influencing everything from allergies and autoimmune conditions to mental health and chronic disease. We dive into how modern life - particularly our relationship with social media and screens - might be disrupting this delicate balance and potentially driving inflammation throughout our bodies. Dan shares insights from his groundbreaking research on how what we scroll through might literally be changing our biology, and offers practical wisdom on how we can become more mindful of these connections in our daily lives.About Dr. Dan Nicolau:Dr. Dan Nicolau is a polymath researcher whose work spans mathematics, engineering, medicine, and computer science. As a leading voice in neuroimmunology, his research explores how the brain and immune system communicate and how this relationship affects our health from allergies to cancer. His multidisciplinary approach combines rigorous science with profound philosophical insights about what it means to live well in the modern world.Connect with Dr. Dan Nicolau:Email: dan.nicolau@kcl.ac.ukLove,Sarah Ann

Send us a textFairfax, Northern Virginia criminal / DUI defense lawyer Jonathan Katz knows the benefit of mindfulness and meditative practice to beating the prosecution and to living a great life. Jon Katz's main mindfulness practice is taijiquan / t'ai chi chu'an yang style short form (also known as 37 posture Cheng Man Ch'ing / CMC taijiquan). Jon has also been involved with lawyers mindfulness gatherings. Jon also benefits from the practice of Self Identity Through Ho'oponopono. This practice helps develop razor sharp focus, deep listening, and clearing out one's internal gunk. Right here in the nation's capital area are some great mindfulness teachers, including through the Insight Meditation Community of Washington. Two of IMCW's best teachers are Jonathan Foust and his wife Tara Brach (on whose Finding True Refuge YouTube series Jon Katz appears in 2012), who teach and speak both separately and jointly. Jon first met Jonathan Foust at the 2015 Mindful Leadership Conference in Northern Virginia, when Jon was taken by Jonathan's warm, soothingly bursting positive energy. Jonathan still deals with his own challenge with chronic migraines; hear in this interview how he handles it. Early in this interview, Jonathan leads a great short meditation, focusing on the three approaches of focus, flow, and releasing. Everything flows wonderfully from there in this talk. For over two decades, Jonathan lived in the Kripalu ashram community. He is devoted to helping others, and virtually weekly presents online mindfulness / meditation teachings, and also at times presents in-person retreats, including his Year of Living Mindfully program.  Jonathan here talks about persuading others through positively engaging with others and recognizing their unmet needs, and how criminal defense lawyers, criminal defendants and others can prepare ourselves well for the battle by going on retreat, which I view not only as daylong and weeklong retreats, but even micro-retreats during breathing pauses or longer. You will thank yourself for listening to what Jonathan has to say. With the dana / donation tradition, Jon Katz recommends people to donate here to Jonathan. This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com.   About the Author: Pema Chödrön, born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in New York City in 1936, is one of the most influential spiritual teachers in the West. A former teacher and wife, her life transformed after a series of personal challenges, including a painful divorce, which led her to explore Tibetan Buddhism. She became a student of Lama Chime Rinpoche in the French Alps and was later ordained as a Buddhist nun in London by the Sixteenth Karmapa. Under the guidance of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, she deepened her practice and teaching. Pema is the director emeritus of Gampo Abbey, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery for Westerners, in Nova Scotia, Canada. She is a prolific author, known for works like When Things Fall Apart and The Places That Scare You, which explore mindfulness, compassion, and resilience. Her teachings emphasize finding liberation through vulnerability and embracing life's challenges as opportunities for growth. About the Book: In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön invites readers to explore the Tibetan Buddhist teachings on the bardo, the transitional state between death and rebirth. As a side note, Buddhism embraces the concept of reincarnation. These teachings highlight how the impermanent nature of life mirrors the bardo experience and how the way we live daily reflects how we will face life's ultimate transition—death. In essence, she's saying that the gap between birth and death is what we call life. She contends that by cultivating mindfulness, compassion, and acceptance of birth, life and death, we can navigate the uncertainties of life and death with a calm state of grace and wisdom. My personal take on this topic? I think it's important in some way to acknowledge and accept the reality of death in order to live your life fully in preparation for it. Welcome to Living Well with MS, where we are pleased to welcome Shannon Harvey as our guest! Shannon is an Australian journalist and filmmaker specialising in wellness, mental health, and optimising wellbeing for those with chronic conditions. Watch this episode on YouTube here. Keep reading for the key episode takeaways and Shannon's bio. Questions and Timestamps: 03:17 Can you tell us about your film ‘The Connection: Mind Your Body'? 05:22 In your film ‘The Connection' you interview some of the top scholars on mindfulness and the mind-body connection including Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Herbert Benson. Can you tell us a bit about their work and what you learned from them? 08:05 You mentioned that for your project ‘My Year of Living Mindfully' (both a film and book) you tried out the science on yourself. How did that go? 10:01 Is there a big difference between doing mindfulness rigorously every day and doing it three or four times a week? 11:21 You've also written a book, ‘The Whole Health Life', and have interviewed dozens of scientists and patients about living a healthy life with an autoimmune disease. So, what are the takeaways from writing that? 12:55 You count Professor George Jelinek as a personal hero of yours. Could you tell us about what it was like to meet George? 15:44 Could you tell us about your latest project called ‘What if mental illness was preventable'? 18:38 How can listeners find out more about your work and watch your films? Key Takeaways: Making lifelong changes is hard but worth it. 12:19 “‘The Whole Health Life' is broken up into very practical things that the Overcoming MS community is already [doing]. Things like making sure I regularly exercise, get enough sleep, have meaningful connections with the people that I love, and [how to] nurture those relationships. Then, [it] talks about the fact that making these lifelong changes is really, really hard. The book is also about how we can apply the science of behaviour change to actually make [these] changes [so] that we can actually stick to [them].” Professor George Jelinek shows that people can live well with chronic conditions. 13:04 “I met George (Jelinek) when I was first shooting ‘The Connection'. It was very much the beginning of my understanding of the many things that we can do for ourselves in order to live well with a chronic illness. He blew me away the first time I met him, because he was really well, despite everything. Despite his family history, despite his prognosis, he was just so well, and meeting him was quite inspirational because I thought to myself, ‘well, if, if he can do it, then he's like a living case study for me to show that I can do it, too.'” Shannon's next project asks, “What if mental illness was preventable?”   16:53 “While I was making ‘My Year of Living Mindfully', I learned that so much of mental illness actually begins before the age of 20 or 22, I think it is. If you develop a mental illness at a young age, you are significantly more likely to develop it again later in life. If you've developed it a second time, it greatly increases your chances of developing it a third time. So, I'm really personally interested in this idea of prevention.” Want to learn more about living a full and happy life with multiple sclerosis? Sign up to our newsletter to hear our latest tips. Continuing our #SoulCare series, Mom and I caught up with a dear friend of the pod, Walt Shelton, about his latest book, Authentic Living in All Seasons: Focused, Fearless and Balanced, which calls us towards 3 elements of qualitative living: Focusing on the present moment (not stuck in the past or preoccupation the future). Not allowing fear to immobilize us. Beginning to ask, what can we do with fear? How can it fuel our actions for good? And "periodically identifying, refining, and balancing our life priorities to progressively live them as fully as possible with necessary questions for continual self reflection: How do I want to show up in the world, and embody Christ's heart? Am I centering kindness, justice, and actively reaching across differences? Am I making space for repenting when it is necessary? Key Takeaways: -Mindfulness and living a life which lifts up justice, equality and being in beloved community are interconnected. God calls us to see one another fully. We should hear a lot more about mindfulness in our churches, "Go out and pay attention to the people around you, and be kind and compassionate with them," Walt says.  - In his book, Walt lifts up the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (found in  Luke 16:19-31), and connects it to mindfulness which helps us live awake. The rich man had multiple opportunities to help, and didn't because of being consumed with his own life. This way of centering self above community is normalized in our society, and around the world; it cuts us off from connecting with one another in the ways God intends.   - We must move away from the disease of multi-tasking; scriptures speak of the importance of a healthy eye, and Walt sees this as connected to singular focus which helps us engage in community with deeper intention, "one person, one need at a time."  - Living a mindful life is a process; we can start where we are right now. Even if it is just a few moments a day.  Set aside time to be with God, away from distractions. If Jesus needed time away to replenish himself, we certainly do! Resources Mentioned in this Episode:  -Walt's book, Authentic Living in All Seasons: Focused, Fearless and Balanced (stay connected with his work on his website).  -The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus found in Luke 16:19-31  Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh (nominated by Dr. King for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967, King called him an “apostle of peace and nonviolence.” Stay Connected With Us!  Visit the website and find devotionals, blog posts, and shop in our NEW online store.  Head over to Instagram, Twitter and TikTok where the conversation continues between episodes.  Special thank you to my husand Keston De Coteau, for podcast production; he is an award-winning videographer and photographer.

Mindfulness is so much more than the image the word provokes: a formal meditation, silence, and deep breaths. It's everything from listening, pausing, to practicing non-judgement and acceptance. Mindfulness practices can and should be a part of your everyday life- science says so! So if you want to come along my journey of trying to live more mindfully, stay tuned for this series where we explore practices together. Let's learn how to make moments meaningful, life more joyful, and actions more purposeful. Let's learn to live with intention and lead with kindness and love. Time is too precious to waste it waiting for better moments. I recognize my privilege in having the time, resources, and capacity to think on topics such as mindfulness. I understand that the circumstances of life may be overwhelming, unfair, unjust, and too demanding to have the freedom to pause and reflect. But if and when we can, let's try to make the most out of our moments. Do you constantly find yourself counting days until the next weekend, or next summer, or next vacation? Do you often postpone important tasks with an excuse like, “I don't have time for this right now, but later, in the future, when life gets less busy, this is when I will get on top of it”?Or do you live your life regretting the decisions you made in the past? Do you keep replaying past events in your head again, and again, and again, and keep wondering what would've happened if things had turned around another way?By doing all of that, by constantly thinking about the past or the future, you are losing an opportunity to be living your life TODAY. As a result, you are not able to fully experience the moment you are in right now, and therefore you cannot learn from this moment and cannot improve your life. This is why it is so important to stay present, or live mindfully. You have probably heard about mindfulness in the context of meditation, but it is so much more than that! That's why, in today's episode I am talking about all things being present, or mindful.I am going to tell you exactly how to recognize when you are not being present, what symptoms or red flags to watch for. And I am also going to give you 10 (yes!) different and easy to do exercises that you can do today to bring your focus and attention to the present moment so you can finally start living your life to the fullest. Are you ready? The New Moon in Gemini is a time to consider our communications and how we express ourselves -- through reading, writing, listening, speaking, and any other means of communication. With Gemini's ruling planet Mercury currently retrograde until June 3rd, we're offered an opportunity to really slow down and bring some extra intentionality to our communication. Practicing meditation and mindfulness is SUCH a powerful way to do this. In honor of this New Moon, I'm so excited to be airing this episode with my very first podcast guest, Deanna Wheeler! Here's a little about her: “Deanna turned to meditation at a time in her life when she needed hope. She had to manage the weight of grief heavier than anything she had ever felt before. She found herself in a very high state of stress and her body was really in fight or flight mode, constantly. It was years before she realized the effects and what neglecting this stress had done to her. After learning the power of meditation firsthand, she wanted to help others do the same. Usually I share interviews with scientists doing research that can shed light on how we can live better, healthier lives. But this week you'll hear from a different kind of expert – a mindfulness teacher who has made a big impact on my life. Timothea Goddard led the eight week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course that I participated in during the production of my film My Year of Living Mindfully. Tim (as she's affectionately known to us Aussies) is a psychotherapist who has taught more than 2000 students and trained more than 200 new mindfulness teachers. But you might find what she has to say about mindfulness rather surprising. In this episode you'll hear – Why trying to find bliss in the present moment is a myth (and a problem, especially if you have anxiety, depression, trauma or chronic pain) How the marketing hype about mindfulness often gets it very wrong That pretty much everyone finds mindfulness training difficult and boring Why learning to turn towards our painful emotions and experiences can be life changing And that life sux, but why we shouldn't take it personally Tim offers mindfulness courses online and in person, and also runs retreats through her organisation Openground. She also runs rigorous mindfulness teacher certification courses through the Mindfulness Training Institute – Australia and New Zealand. If you'd like to know more about MBSR from the man who actually developed it, head to the very first episode of this podcast series and look for my interview with Jon Kabat Zinn.

In this episode, Howard is sharing about the ways that you can empower yourself in 2021 at the deepest level. To help facilitate this conversation, he is bringing on a new co-host — Tierney Rae! Tierney is a friend of Howard's who was previously on episode 5 of the podcast, “A Young Spiritual Seeker's Journey of Healing, Overcoming Self-Doubt, and Living Mindfully.” She is a yoga instructor; spiritual seeker; and runs a book club with a focus on studying self-awareness, spirituality, and consciousness. Tierney will also continue to join Howard as a co-host in future episodes to come! In Tierney and Howard's discussion, they use his book, I AM: The Power of Discovering Who You Really Are, to guide them through the key lessons in achieving self-awareness. Today's podcast interview is a little different from the first two. Although, like the others, this interview was done for my last documentary project, My Year of Living Mindfully, it isn't with someone who's specifically a mindfulness researcher.   It's with a scientist at the forefront of understanding the connection between our mind, body and health. If you've seen my first documentary, The Connection, you'll know that is a topic I'm really committed to understanding more.    I did this interview while I was still setting-up my ridiculously elaborate, hare brained experiment to see what would happen to my health and wellbeing if I meditated every day for a year.    It meant having to take a plane from my home in Sydney, Australia to the other side of the world, then taking another plane and yet another plane. Eventually I arrived at the Global Wellness Summit in Palm Beach, Florida, where Professor Elissa Epel, the Director of the Aging, Metabolism and Emotion Center at University of California San Francisco Medical School, was giving a key note speech about her research investigating how chronic stress can impact our health and biological ageing, and how activities like mindfulness may slow or even reverse those effects.   I knew the journey would be worth it because although Elissa and I hadn't met before, she had already made a big impression on how my own lifestyle was influencing my health. Among many other things, she co-authored a best-selling book called The Telomere Effect, with the Nobel prize winning molecular biologist, Elizabeth Blackburn.   Elissa's influential research demonstrating that mind-body activities like mindfulness training can slow down the rate at which our cells age, was the reason I'd enlisted the help of Associate Professor, Hilda Picket, from Sydney University's Children's Medical Research Institute. Hilda had already measured my telomeres from two control blood samples taken before I began meditating daily. I really wanted to know whether doing something with my mind could have downstream effects throughout my body, and impact my physical health.

When I began my year-long documentary experiment to see what would happen to my health and wellbeing if I meditated every day for a year, a key motivating force was a special issue of The Lancet which declared that every country in the world is facing and failing to tackle a host of mental health issues. Crucially, the special issue was published before COVID19 changed the world and introduced a whole new range of global mental health challenges. This is why I'm especially keen to share this week's podcast with you. Now, more than ever, we need robust discussions about "the how" of both preventing and treating mental health problems. This podcast is my extended interview with Professor Willem Kuyken, who is the director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and at the forefront of investigating how mindfulness can be used for mental health. Although mindfulness is sometimes dismissed as "woo woo" in medical circles, Willem's research has earned him a place among the Who's Who of influential scientists because his papers investigating mindfulness and depression have ranked him in the top one percent of researchers cited in the field.  In this podcast you'll hear: Why it's significant that a mindfulness intervention has been shown to be equal to medication for preventing recurrent depression If teaching mindfulness to teenagers can prevent them from developing depression later in life Why there's a good reason to be optimistic about mental health treatments in the future I hope you enjoy the extended interview with Willem. It's such a pleasure to be able to share the material that sadly hit the cutting room floor when I made my documentary My Year of Living Mindfully.
