On today's show I have the pleasure of welcoming Ukrainian American author, speaker, and management consultant Oksana Kukurudza to talk about her book “Sunflowers Bend But Rarely Break” in which she shares what it was like for her Ukrainian parents' to live in Ukraine in the 20's and 30's, their journey from Nazi slave camps, liberation by the US Army, and finally settling as immigrants in the United States with their 12 children. Oksana was born in Rochester, NY and currently lives in New York City. She is a first generation American, born to Ukrainian immigrant parents, and is the youngest of twelve siblings. Oksana attended Boston University and Emory's Goizueta Business School, earning both a Bachelor's and Master's of Business Administration (MBA). Her specialty areas of both expertise and experience are public accounting and management consulting. Through her work, Oksana spent eighteen months in Ukraine and six months in Italy in the 1990s. During her time in Ukraine, she lived and worked in Kyiv but also worked in other cities across Ukraine such as L'viv, Kryvyi Rih. and Dnipro (Dnipropetrovsk at the time) witnessing first-hand Ukraine's difficult transition from communist Soviet Union to fledgling capitalist democracy.  Through her work and leisure, Oksana has traveled to over eighty countries, writing travel journals for her own personal consumption, collecting dear friends as well as words. Oksana recently collaborated on two business anthology books by Australian CEO and humanitarian, Cathy Dimarchos, entitled Going Against the Grain and Thinking Limitlessly. Oksana wrote a chapter for each anthology book.  In addition, during her twenty-one-year career in management consulting, Oksana has been published through “thought leadership” papers and interviewed for articles in business periodicals on subjects ranging from post-merger integration to robotics process automation. Inspired by the events of the Russo-Ukraine War and her own parents' story of surviving slave camps of the Third Reich during WWII, this will be Oksana's first major literary work. Cathy Burke believes that leadership potential rests within every person, every community and every organisation. It just needs to be activated. Cathy works with people in organisations throughout the world to help them develop a leaders mindset. In her previous life as Australian CEO and Global Vice President of The Hunger Project, Cathy transformed mindsets and developed leaders as the foundation of her work in villages around the world. Even in the most difficult conditions, time and again people without anything were able to tap into the power of their mindset to achieve remarkable outcomes in their communities. In this season where we are revealing what goes on behind the scenes in the work that we do, I thought it pertinent to talk about some of the personal development that I have done recently that supports my growth as a human but also as a business owner and of course within my profession as a marketer. Recently, I have felt that any stagnation, or any hurdles that were facing me in my profession and in my business, were not necessarily due to a lack of business and marketing skills, they have been due to a lacking mindset. I recently completed Cathy's Rising program and I am now aware of the significant role of mindset. In fact, I'd even go as far to say, that in hindsight, if I knew then what I know now, I would not even bother spending any money on any of the many other professional development programs I have done, until I got my mindset in the right spot. In this episode, Cathy beautifully explains the role that mindset can play to help you lead a bigger life. You can find more about Cathy's Rising Program and her books on her website which is here: https://www.cathyburke.com/ To take Cathy's Leadership Mindset test - click here: https://leaders-mindset.scoreapp.com/ About Jane Hillsdon I'm a passionate award-winning marketer dedicated to helping small business owners make good decisions about their marketing. I am the founder and CEO of a marketing agency called Dragonfly Marketing PLUS the founder of the How to do Marketing Academy.  I'm also the author of How To Do Marketing – A Comprehensive Guide For Small Business.  It's my mission to ensure that marketing is on the agenda for every regionally based small business in Australia. Why? Because I know that when marketing is done properly, it can help your business grow. On the marketing front, I am a Certified Practicing Marketer (CPM), a member of the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) NSW Committee and a head judge for the AMI Awards for Excellence. To discuss The Politics of Equality I am interviewing Mark Nielsen. He is the Global Chief Executive Officer of Talent International and a pioneering leader with over 25 years of experience.  Over the course of his career, Mark has held C-level roles across start-ups, turnarounds, and multinational corporations. This experience spans organizations in Australia, South Africa, China, the United Kingdom, and the USA, and across the recruitment, technology, resources, retail and medical device sectors. Throughout his career, he has held executive and non-executive director positions on listed and unlisted company boards. Mark is often referred to as a “new age” or “next-generation” leader who truly understands the multiple benefits of a fully engaged and committed team. He is particularly proud of having built an open, respectful, and unique culture at Talent.  Mark aims to ensure that each member of the team champions Talent's core tenets of progressive and innovative thinking, passion for technological advancement and digital transformation, and customer-centered service.  Mark's current role is managing Talent's $750m+ business, driving both Talent's global expansion and its cultural and digital transformations. He is also the co-founder and board member of Talent's foundation Talent RISE, which addresses youth unemployment through the mentoring and placement of young people into technology-related roles. In 2018, Mark was named Australian CEO of the Year (CEO Magazine), Professional Services Executive of the Year (CEO Magazine), and Recruitment Leader of the Year – Australia (SEEK SARA Awards). In 2020, he was on the Deliotte 50 Outstanding LGBTI+ leaders list. Mark holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Cape Town is a graduate of The Wharton School's Executive Development Program and is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Mark is highly regarded for his ability to lead and build high-performance organizations with compassion at their core. He is outcome-focused, a long-term thinker and therefore passionate about building strong organizational cultures. Questions we cover with Mark: Can you share your career ambitions – so what you thought you'd do for a living when you were a kid growing up? And did that happen? Your early career story please! How do you define equality and moreover inequality? Is the notion we are all born equal even realistic let alone what we can do to even out the equality divide that permeates everything such as our income status, education, where we live, and of course gender? Is equality above leveling the playfield or compensating when the situation is clearly not equal or fair? E.g. I think of things like superannuation being paid for women who take career breaks for family reasons. Some employers will top it up while they are on maternity leave. You grew up in South Africa which, at the time, was a very conservative country and you say you really struggled to express his identity as a gay man. Still to this day, there are a lot of people who struggle with this and don't have the courage to be themselves. I know you want to change that. As a white male living a fairly comfortable life as far as we know, do you think you have an obligation – maybe more than most – to address equality more than others who may be perceived as less privileged? Why and how do you do that in your work/daily life? The rise of “cancel culture” and the idea of canceling someone coincides with a familiar pattern: A celebrity or other public figure does or says something offensive. A public backlash, often fuelled by politically progressive social media, ensues. Then come the calls to cancel the person — that is, to effectively end their career or revoke their cultural cachet, whether through boycotts of their work or disciplinary action from an employer. Is this recent focus on cancel culture a “mob mentality” on steroids, or a long-overdue way of speaking truth to old forms of power? How can it help balance the power the higher profile people have over us long term or not? What role does business and government play in improving equality in modern society? Share an example or two of how this can be done better or has been done overseas even. Who have been your greatest mentors (1 or 2) and what did they teach you? If you could choose a favorite book, song or film what would it be and why? (Can be serious or quirky!). Take away: What your final takeaway message for us on addressing The Politics of Equality?

Extraordinary times call for legendary leadership. In this episode, we talk about why your brand will be defined by what you do during coronavirus. This is a moment of truth. What leaders do in moments of truth define who they become and what happens to our brand. “I think people are going to remember what you did or didn't do during this crisis. How companies treat humanity during this crisis will have a long term impact.” - Christopher Lochhead Focus on People Christopher had been speaking with entrepreneurs about the discussions they should focus on to make a difference during this coronavirus crisis. First is: focus on people. He shares about an Australian CEO who discussed with his people how they can make the most out of their cash on hand and accounts receivable. Half the people would rather get half of their salary than getting laid off. “I think legendary leaders are open about these things and talk to the people about them. Try to do it in a way that is humane as possible and that extends your cash runway as possible.” - Christopher Lochhead Focus on Customers Now is the time to make a difference with customers. Christopher cites an entrepreneur who runs a gym. Rather than making a decision amongst him and his executive team, he asked their customers, if they want to cancel their subscription, do they want to pay half. A good 80 percent of their customers came back and said “we want to keep on paying you at the full rate.” In addition, they're doing a lot like what other legendary people in the health and wellness and fitness industry are doing, they are putting a lot of content on the internet. “By being open real with people, they have endeared themselves to their customers in a very, very powerful way.“ - Christopher Lochhead Focus on Humanity What are we doing for humanity? Now is a great time to be radically generous. In fact, the company Dyson produced a new type of respirator in 10 days and have been supplying 15,000 for this pandemic fight.  “We have to ask ourselves what do we have to contribute? It might be money, it might be other things. it might be expertise. In our case, we have a podcast to contribute, so we’re doing that.” - - Christopher Lochhead To hear more about Christopher’s thoughts on how a company’s action during this crisis will affect their brands, download and listen to this episode.  Bio: Christopher Lochhead is a #1 Apple podcaster and #1 Amazon bestselling co-author of books: Niche Down and Play Bigger. As accountancy businesses meet the challenges of going to the “next level”, accountancy firm leaders will need to refresh their leadership skills and knowledge to meet the ongoing challenges including: digital disruption competition staff recruitment and motivation some competitors outsourcing work overseas what sort of services do we supply to our clients e.g: Assistance to clients wishing to raise capital as Crowd Sourced Funding Companies or Early Stage Innovation Companies Chief Financial Officer services Risk Management Reviews – Personal Property Securities Register/Insurance Covers Financial planning Superannuation Fund Audits Applying for an Intermediary’s Licence for Crowd Sourced Funding Equity Raising Legislation Other business advisory services   Cindy Hook the Australian CEO of Deloitte outlined her views on leadership recently, which included some of the following:   “Be Purpose Led” Make every individual feel a deep sense of purpose and involvement and feeling that they are appreciated for making a difference.   “Be Bold” Leaders must be able to set agendas and then power through the problems that emerge concentrating on positives not negatives.   “Empower your Team” whilst a leader needs to understand his or her strengths and weaknesses it is very important that the leader gives space to individual team members to enable them to grow.   “Be Open-Minded” Workforces are becoming more diverse – leaders must guard against becoming “close-minded” as they get older. To be an effective leader you have to be open-minded.   “Foster an Inspiring Culture” Leaders need to encourage those, for whom they are responsible, to develop their personal skills and confidence, if an organisation is going to be able to meet the challenges ahead - To become product champions or industry champions.   The challenge for accountancy firm leaders is to ensure that the team understand the direction that the firm wishes to go in and that the entire team have been encouraged to develop the skills that are going to be needed to enable the firm to deliver the “next level” of business advice in a clear manner with empathy to your small/medium enterprise clients.   ESS BIZTOOLS includes a separate Leadership Product Package developed by Peter McDougall AM, Managing Director of The Leadership Academy.   This package will assist partners, managers and team members to gain an understanding of the culture of leadership as it applies to accountancy businesses wanting to go to the “next level”.   You can view an overview on the ESS BIZTOOLS’ Leadership Package – click here.   Leadership for accountants wanting to go to the “next level” will be considered in our next free webinar – Equity Crowdfunding Forecast to Grow Tenfold in Just 5 Years!” - that is being presented on Wednesday 6th December 2017 at 12 noon AEST (1.00pm AEDT).
