Jewish artists have been ostricized since Oct. 7. Will it lead to a renaissance of Jewish art?

Earlier this month, 18 Canadian theatre companies—including the world's largest queer theatre company, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, based in Toronto—joined a cultural and academic boycott of Israel, in solidarity with Gaza. It was just the latest evolution in a trend that has been particularly noteworthy since Oct. 7, 2023, when the North American arts community turned sharply against pro-Israel and Jewish artists in all fields, noteably theatre, film, literature, poetry. The progression has led us here. After years of isolation, there is more hunger than ever for proudly Jewish art, with calls for increased Jewish arts grants and community support. Here to echo those calls are two Jewish artists who have experienced these struggles in the last two years: Shaina Silver-Baird is a writer, actor and the creator of the TV series Less Than Kosher, and Hal Niedzviecki was the editor of Broken Pencil, Canada's magazine covering independent zine culture, which he abruptly closed after facing backlash from progressive activists to denounce Israel. In this series finale of Culturally Jewish, The CJN's podcast covering Canadian Jewish artists, hosts Ilana Zackon and David Sklar sit down for a frank conversation and take stock of the last two years—while also expressing hopes for the future. In Episode 149, Gen and Jette continue to celebrate Pride Month with Tony Kushner's award-winning play, Angels in America. We had to cut ourselves off eventually because we could talk about this play forever.Show NotesWe went to see this play last December at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto. It was produced by That Theatre Company and directed by Craig Pike. (Yes, Torontonians, Craig Pike of Craig's Cookies.) It was phenomenal and we knew we had to read the play and dedicate an episode to it. The play runs about 7 hours long in total and is technically two separate plays: Millennium Approaches and Perestroika.HBO made a mini series, adapted for the screen by Tony Kushner, in 2003.In 2017, The National Theatre produced a revival starring Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane and it eventually went to Broadway. This play has won a lot of awards and it's very clear why. We'll definitely make it a point to see any production of this that we can get to.This spring, Gen went to see another 7-hour long play called The Inheritance, put on by Canadian Stage Company. It's a reimagining of E.M. Forester's novel Howard's End and also deals with AIDS and being gay in America, but in a contemporary setting that takes place before and after the election of Donald Trump. Our next episode is our 150th! Appropriately, it is a book club episode. We'll be talking about Jette's pick, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno Garcia. SUMMARY In this month's episode of The SpokenWeb Podcast, ShortCuts is taking over the airwaves. ShortCuts is the monthly minisode that takes you on a deep dive into archival sound through a short ‘cut' of audio. In this fifth season, ShortCuts producer Katherine McLeod has been presenting a series of live conversations recorded at the 2023 SpokenWeb Symposium – and in this full episode, we're rolling out the last of those recordings. You'll hear from Moynan King, Erica Isomura and Rémy Bocquillon. You'll also hear the voices of our then-supervising producer Kate Moffatt and our then-sound designer Miranda Eastwood, who was there behind-the-scenes recording the audio and who joins in the conversations too.  Listening is at the heart of each conversation, and each conversation ends with the question: What are you listening to now? A wise man said that the dangerous thing about Sky Gilbert is he's got nothing to lose… so of course we had to invite him on to talk to us this week. We ask this Canadian writer, actor, professor, and drag performer about how gay culture and drag have changed over time, the connection between covid and victimhood culture, and the puritanism and anti-humanism of North Americans. He tells us why he prefers the French feminists' approach to MeToo, what it's like working in theatre in these lonely, digital times, and that if we had a healthy sexual culture, people wouldn't be so obsessed with porn and 15-year olds twerking. We also ask him about founding Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto, and why he had to split with them.

A hyphenated existence, my life is my work, my work is my life. Some people can categorize and separate but those of us who are marginalized can’t afford to do so. Sometimes I wonder if our work has had to evolve into critical interrogation out of necessity? If we lived in a decolonized world what would we be making? Who would we be serving? I think we are all capable and deserving of knowing and living ourselves into these answers. This workshop invites participants to reflect and confront on who gets to have a seat at the table.” – Shaista LatifTickets: http://progressfestival.org/programming/how-i-learned-to-serve-tea
