Adrián Mejia was born and raised in Quito, the city that he loves and hates. He wants to see more latines in Fantasy, both as characters and players, and tell stories he doesn't see elsewhere. He is the lead director of the Koboa project, a South American Fantasy setting for D&D, Pathfinder and other fantasy ganes, and is hoping to get a few more projects underway as he keeps experimenting with game designs he finds interesting. The first time I saw the vibrant colors and unique characters of the Koboa ads I was immediately interested and started to follow Adrían. As a fellow RPGLATAM creator, I was excited to have Adrían on the show to talk about his project, his journey, his inspirations, and that's what we did. We also talked a lot about being Latin Americans making games in the international market, we talked about RPGLATAM, about colonization, about social justice, and many other things that is almost impossible not to talk about when we talk about LATAM. It was a delightful chat, full of great ideas, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did. Listen up and get weird with us! Check out Adrían links! As the Trophy and Vase reach the Quarter Finals we talk with those at the top. First up a Co-Chairman whose love for his club began decades ago with most of those spent admiring from afar. Now however, Bill Waterson is using that fans passion, and business knowhow to push forward his club Altrincham, now in it's first year as full-time and going from strength to strength. We have a return of our very own statto Phil Annets with his @favasefactfile hat on too helping us understand the magical facts behind this season's last eight. One of which is Peacehaven and Telscombe. Chair Sue Norwood took on the role seven years ago with the club in some turmoil. A new manager still in situe and a focus on community football means not only are the mens side in the last 8 of this season's FA Vase but there is also a reserve side, Development side, U23s and two under 18s side plus a a wealth of youth and ladies football at the club. Enter the labyrinth - if you dare.. Tyler and Dash explore 2017's Dave Made a Maze, directed by Bill Waterson. Guest starring Jeff Burk!
-- Calvin and Hobbes courtesy of Bill Waterson None of us wants to be judged by our worst act on our worst day, and we consistently judge Burr for that. He was not a perfect man, but he's not a villain. He's a dude, just a guy. -- Leslie Odom, Jr. What if the worst day of your life ended up being just another Zoom meeting on someone else's calendar? What if that day ended up being a part of a data breach due to a cyberattack from someone half a world away who didn't know or care anything about you or the impact it would have on your life and the lives of those around you? How important are the people who are protecting the mechanisms of judicial branch of government? It may not be something that we cared about when everything worked the way we were used to… but when anyone with a good internet connection and a a few hacking tools can become part of the justice system… things get a bit more complicated. On this week's No Name Security podcast Matt Stephenson welcomes New Jersey Courts CISO Sajed Naseem for a chat about what it takes to secure an operation that affects the daily lives of over 10,000 employees, 100,000+ attorneys, police officers and government officials… and, not for nothin'… the entire population of the state of New Jersey. Think a CISO's job is tough? How about being the CISO who is protecting the data of an entire state… while being a Knicks fan. About Sajed Naseem Sajed Naseem is the Chief Information Security Officer of New Jersey Courts. Saj has over 20 years of experience with information security and information technology. As the CISO of the New Jersey Courts, Naseem has focused on cybersecurity readiness and performance, information governance, and network security. He holds master degrees from St. John's University and Columbia University. Saj is routinely a speaker at cybersecurity conferences across the country, Europe, and with the New Jersey Bar Association. He is also an Adjunct Professor at St. John's University in information security since 2010 and a native of New York City. Saj is a Knicks fan and thinks that they may have actually turned the corner… but… he is also a realist, so he's waiting to see what happens next. About Matt Stephenson Matt Stephenson (@packmatt73) leads the Social Media team at Forescout, which puts me in front of people all over the world. Prior to joining Forescout, I hosted podcasts, videos and live events all over the world which put me with experts on every corner of the cybersecurity landscape. The new No Name Security Podcast will continue and expand upon that tradition as we seak out the leading minds in the security industry as well as those may break things every now again. And… just for fun, there will be some wildcard guests as well. In 10 years in the ecosystem of Data Protection and Cybersecurity I have toured the world extolling the virtues of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and how, when applied to information security, these technologies can wrong-foot the bad guys. Prior to the COVID shutdown, I was on the road over 100 days a year doing live malware demonstrations for audiences from San Diego to DC to London to Abu Dhabi to Singapore to Sydney. One of the funniest things I've ever been a part of was blowing up a live instance of NotPetya 6 hours after the news broke... in Washington DC... directly across the street from FBI HQ... as soon as we activated it a parade of police cars with sirens blaring roared past the building we were in. I'm pretty sure they weren't there for us, but you never know... Whether at in person events, live virtual events or podcasting, I get to interview interesting people doing interesting things all over the world of cybersecurity and the extended world of hacking. Sometimes, that means hacking elections or the coffee supply chain... other times that means social manipulation or the sovereign wealth fund of a national economy. Wherever I go, my job is all about talking with the people who build, manage or wreck the systems that we have put in place to make the world go round... If you tuned in to any of my previous podcasts, there's great news! The No Name Security Podcast is here! I will be bringing the same kind of energy and array of guests you know and love. Best part? We're still at the same spot. You can find it at Spotify, Apple, Amazon Music & Audible as well as, GooglePlay, Gaana, Himalaya, I Heart Radio and wherever you get your podcasts! Make sure you Subscribe, Rate and Review!
Back once again in the greatest garage in Ontario with the Dads+Bikes Podcast Experience. Alix, Steve, and Ian discuss how our forefathers led the way for us and how they dealt with the passing of loved ones. As usual, we also talk about food and how great it is. Specifically, getting terrible feedback from our kids when we put wholesome Ontario-grown vegetables in our homemade works of art. Bill Waterson, the genius who created Calvin & Hobbes, is on our podcast agenda once again and how we all can relate to the adventures he created. Pretty solid work to get your kids into at an early age for all the humour and life lessons. FYI: This is the first episode where Alix experiences Slivovitz, a beautiful type of plum brandy. It's also the last episode Alix experiences Slivovitz. "This Slivovitz is intense." As a closing to this description, we discuss no bikes. None. It's part of our winning formula and its evolving structure. Song choice: Wild Summer by Flamingosis Check out our Instagram and join us on our journey to restore our vintage motorcycles!
Assessing your desired lifestyleIt seems like a no-brainer, but to reach the finish line and retire how you would like, you have to determine your target amount. According to an FNBO ‘Retirement in America’ study, 69 percent of those who have yet to retire hadn’t calculated how much they needed to do so. In order to know that target amount, you have to take into consideration what your life looks like and how much you want it to adjust. The last thing you want to do is guess, or just improvise until you are too close to retirement to make any adjustment or plan.Typically, you want to save enough to live on 75% to 85% of your pre-retirement income. That varies based on how much you want to adjust in comparison to your pre-retirement lifestyle. Some folks stay very active or have bucket list items they want to check off. Maybe the house becomes a smaller one, health costs change….It all factors in.Barbara goes into a basic formula for calculating necessary retirement savings amounts ( Subtract your projected expenses in retirement from any guaranteed sources of retirement income (Social Security retirement benefit, pension, annuity payments). This is the amount of annual expenses you must fund with savings. Multiply this amount by the number of years you expect to spend in retirement.) How early should we start saving?Simple answer: as soon as you can. A lot of Americans aren’t doing that, however. According to the survey we mentioned earlier, 19 percent of retirees were older than 50 when they started saving for retirement. 16 percent were between 41 and 50.You want to avoid starting that late, but if that’s where you are, an advisor can help. Bottom line, the answer to this is start saving yesterday. Talk about compound interest helping those who save earlier, and use $250 per month as an example amount, comparing totals starting at age 25, 35 and 45. What kind of hurdles does the normal person face when trying to stay on track? Well, this figures into your budget no matter what stage in life, but…DEBT. You’ve got the average household owing over $15k in debt. The interest and principal payments on heavy debt like this will severely hamper your ability to put money away for the future. Every day budgeting helps with this. Another item: the unexpected. Many folks working toward retirement and saving tend to look at the situation in a vacuum. They calculate (or, without an advisor, they guess) and decide, “hey, based on a percentage of my pre-retirement income, I’m going to save this much continuously all the way up until I retire, then this number will be the rock-solid, be-all-end-all yearly number and I am good. What they don’t plan for, however, is health coverage. You want to keep that on your radar. Employer sponsored coverage will stop, and you’ll have an adjustment to plan for there. Medicare helps, but all things considered, you want to look close at what is bound to happen—a shift in health care and healthcare coverage costs. We don’t want you surprised when it comes to that. Also, don’t touch! Your retirement savings is for just that—retirement. Obviously in absolute dire emergencies you can look at using it, but it’s best not to. There could be penalties involved in withdrawing early. Quick Facts“There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want.” – Bill Waterson, Calvin & Hobbes“The best time to start thinking about your retirement is before the boss does.” – Author UnknownOnly 58% of Americans are actively saving for retirement Only 36% of Americans strongly agree or agree that they know how much money they’ll need to retire. The average debt load for Millennials is $30,580, and the average household income is $55,200.A majority of Americans are learning about retirement by word of mouth.
And now a rambling and too brief review of "Calvin & Hobbes" by Bill Waterson, one of the greatest comic strips ever made.

In this episode of The Road to Now, Richard Samuel West joins Bob and Ben for a conversation on the history of political cartoons in the United States. West tells of how political cartoonists went from independent artists in the early 19th century who sold their work on the streets to become powerful actors in American politics just a few decades later. He also explains how technological and social forces led to the rise, and eventual fall, of political cartoons as a form of satire, and how one of America's most powerful and corrupt crime bosses was brought down by a single artist and his drawings. Richard Samuel West is the coauthor of What Fools These Mortals Be: The History of Puck (IDW Publishing, 2014 w/ forward by Bill Waterson) and the founder of Periodyssey, which specializes in “significant and unusual American paper.”
I love the quote from Bill Waterson that says, “Experience is food for the brain.” What’s so wonderful about our brains is that they are continuously learning, continuously growing, and continuously making new connections. Your brain is this miraculous, self-designing entity. It can do so much to change your own world, but it can also change the world at large. However, it can only activate its true potential if we give it the tools to do so. Experience feeds the brain. And there is likely no greater experience for nourishing and energizing your brain than The Superhero Brain Conference. This event highlights the greatest thinkers and experts on improving and using your brain that the world has ever seen. Your brain is the governing force that’s directing every thought and every cell in your body. If you truly want to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilled life, then there’s nothing more important than learning how to create a superhero brain. In this episode you'll discover: What neuroplasticity is and why it’s important. Why learning keeps your brain young. The 3 major ways to create new neural connections in your brain. How your self-talk influences your brain and your life. 3 keys to changing your self-talk to help you reach your goals. How to train your brain to make accurate neuroassociations that boost your productivity. How your sleep quality impacts your memory. Why your gut health is influencing your sleep health. How these sheets can actually improve your sleep quality. Why Apple made major changes to the iPhone to help improve sleep. Which nutrients are critical to brain function. What incredible lessons I received from 28-time Grammy Award winner Quincy Jones about learning. Why we tend to fight for our limitations. 3 strategies to instantly change your perception of the challenges in your life. Brendon Panke joins Tim and Dirn on the 20th anniversary of the final Calvin and Hobbes strip to discuss the genesis and legacy of Bill Waterson's masterpiece. Discussions on youth, imagination, and artistic integrity abound!
Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Waterson is the topic of today's discussion about reading and writing with Pip Adam.Tallulah and I talk about Calvin and Hobbes, life in the the 1990s and how snakes pee. I feel like Toki has always liked comics. I don’t know if that’s because we have a lot around the house or something else but she really loves reading them. Although she gets a lot of comics through Comixology she still enjoys going to the library and rummaging through the collection there. We love our library so much. They have a really diverse collection with a lot of comics and what they call ‘sophisticated picture books’. In the introduction to this podcast I also get excited about Wellington City Libraries eLibrary, which you can read about here

Long live Adele Dazeem!! The Oscars were this weekend so we talk about them out of mostly obligation, but the real stories are with our own Rob Yulfo and Pat Ryan coming out with brand new creative content! Rob's got a new animated short and Pat has just started a Sci-Fi radio show series (both embedded here). We also talk about painted movie posters, Bill Waterson's new "comic", the documentary on the Rhythm & Hues bankruptcy and the VFX issue as a whole. This one was recorded in one long shot and I didn't go back to remaster anything because Rob again... has computer issues. We literally recorded this 3 hours prior to me typing this. So... enjoy!! In the debut episode of GEEK THIS I'm sharing my personal history with comics and how web comics have become a staple in my regular reading. When I think of comic books, my first thought is 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men. The visual style of Batman was always the most memorable part of that show and has help up over the last 20 years. X-Men exuded the feel of 90's comics. Both, though, inspired me to start reading, drawing, and even cemented voices of characters in my mind. Oddly enough, though, superhero comics weren't the predominant sources in my childhood. Comic strips like Garfield, Peanuts, and Beetle Bailey were regulars due to my grandparents giving me "the funnies" each week. What truly inspired me and pulled me into comics was Bill Waterson's Calvin & Hobbes. They've become a mainstay in my personal list of top series. They inspired a lot of drawings and potential comic strips I create even today. My love for Calvin & Hobbes flowed into my interest for web comics. Some of the best ones I'm reading now are Pokeweed by Drew Pocza, The Monkey & The Mouse by Kev Brett, and Insert Image by Wes Molebash. Note: The original name for the show was Geek This! Nerd That! which is mentioned at the top of the show. If you'd like to hear my take on this episode years later, listen to #100, where I give an audio commentary in real time.
