When it comes to a healthy body - one which isn't in pain and which moves well to support your life and your training, we sometimes just focus on either high intensity exercise or stretching. Or a bit of both. And that's an amazing place to start. But sometimes we need a bit more than that. So when I talked to Eoin Everard in this week's podcast episode (yes, my very first male guest!) I got the lowdown on what else we need to be paying attention to.Mobility - and this doesn't just mean flexibility but dealing with “stuck” areas in your body through massage, plus looking at mobility in other areas of the body. E.g. if you have knee issues, you may need to be looking at mobility at the ankle and/or the hip.Stability - learning to activate muscles properly. Again, if you're having knee issues, you may need to work on properly activating core and glute muscles.Motor control - ensuring that your technique is spot on.We also got into training zones that we need to be hitting in our training, AND he got honest about how to get what you need out of the men in your life. Clue: it's the opposite of subtlety!Come and join us to get the lowdown, some of Eoin's top tips and some ideas on how to adapt your training for better results!Find out more about Eoin:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everardpilatesphysio/ Website: https://everardpilates.com/Resources: My website https://www.chickfit.co.uk/Find me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/alixchickfitReview and subscribe to my podcast https://www.podfollow.com/chickfitMentioned in this episode:Secure your spot for Fatigued to FabulousIf you want to join me to discover my 5-Step Perimenopause Breakthrough Plan, then just head to the link below. Today I'm talking to Eoin Everard, an Irish physiotherapist and elite runner who has represented his country on the international athletics stage — he's run the mile in under 4 minutes and is the 2-time Irish National Champion at 1500 meters. And if that's not enough, he's got a PhD in biomechanics. Eoin and I talk about his athletic background and how overcoming injury led him down a path to better understand sports performance for all athletes. Where does athletic movement start breaking down, and how do mobility restrictions factor in? And what can athletes to do start addressing those issues? While the information on this podcast isn't meant as medical advice, I hope you get a lot out of how our guest breaks down biomechanics in a really digestible way. Before we get into that, I want to give a quick shoutout to today's episode sponsor, Protecht Wraps. Wrist protection is important for me — and as someone with wrist injuries in the past, I try and go the extra mile to protect them.Do you wear a fitness tracker when lifting? We are all born knowing how to walk which explains why running is one of the most popular forms of exercise; we already know how to do it and all that's required is a decent set of shoes, some proper kit and you're off. However, poor running mechanics or a poorly designed training program could cause injuries and keep you from being able to do any exercise. There are many different methods of training for running, the most important approach is to identify one that works for your needs and follow the proper progression. Eoin Everard, PhD, is a champion runner who is also a physiotherapist and a pilates coach. Over the course of his experience as a runner, therapist and coach, Eoin has developed a functional approach to exercise that can significantly reduce the risk of injury while helping you to improve your running performance. If you've ever raced or done a group track workout, you've seen them.   Grown men and women in tiny shorts doing exaggerated skipping and hopping.  Swinging their legs back and forth.  And you've seen those runners that look like they are not going for a run, but practicing for a line dance, doing the grapevine back and forth. Should you start swinging, skipping, and dancing, too? Yes.  A little jogging before your runs and races isn't enough. Those weird, silly rituals really do have specific benefits not only for the workout you're about to do, but can impact your running fitness overall. Welcome to the Planted Runner.  I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. Running is the final leg of a triathlon and the one where most people seem to struggle. Whether that's because of a lack of running fitness or going too hard on the bike it's a hard puzzle to solve. The obvious solution would be to just run more, but that does increase the risk of injury. Myself and many other coaches prefer to focus on consistency by building a robust framework combined with better technique and running efficiency. Today's guest, Eoin Everard, is one such coach. An elite runner, now physiotherapist and back pain specialist from Ireland, Eoin knows a thing or two about running fast, having run under 4 minutes for a mile, 14 minutes for 5k, and 30 minutes for 10k, and competed for Ireland internationally. He also treats a lot of elite runners and knows a thing or two about how to keep runners healthy and consistent with their training. I love chatting about how to help athletes get faster, and today as usual we cover plenty of ground, including: Typical triathlon injuries and how to prevent them Building running economy with strength training and some simple plyometrics Should you change your foot strike to run faster Why you should make proactive visits to your physiotherapist   If you'd like to follow Eoin on social media you can find him here Facebook Everard Physio & Pilates Back Aware Belt   Instagram Everard Pilates Physio BackAwareBelt If you would like to try Eoin's sport Pilates class you can take a FREE Trial HERE   Eoin also mentioned the two books he has written  Get to the Line in the Best Shape Possible The Secrets of a Healthy Spine. Eoin Everard is a long-time listener of RunChats, who hails from Kilkenny, Ireland, and reached out to collaborate on this episode. I'm so stoked to share his inspiring running journey and lessons learned as a sub-4 minute miler, sub-14 5K, sub-30 10K, and 5X Irish National Champion. Eoin (pronounced Owen) is currently the 3K European Indoor Masters Champion and in his professional life is a chartered physio, who holds a PhD in Biomechanics. Part One: We discuss his amazing running journey. His sporty, competitive, turbo-fast family. With an older brother who ran for the National cross-country team, Eoin shared a funny story how he regularly razzed him about it. His sister ran the 800m in the Rio Olympics—can you say FAST FAMILY?! How he took a year off to fully dedicate himself to being his best, chasing an Olympic dream, worked on his mindset, and in his words, "ran like a donkey." He then had an epiphany that nobody gives a sh*t what times he was running. If he was happy, his family and closest friends were happy. He went on to become a 5X Irish National Champ after letting go of that self-imposed pressure. Part Two: Eoin has spent his life focused on how runners move and how to try and help them to move better, get stronger, and faster through his Pilates practice. We discuss muscle activation, running mechanics, injury prevention, carbon shoes, and varying training intensities. We took a deeper dive on how trying to improve one's running stride can be a cautionary tale and lead to injuries and on keys to avoiding injury long-term. I hope you will be inspired by Eoin's running journey, lessons learned and shared, and enjoy his proper Irish accent as much as my mom (née McCabe)! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. There are broad elements of training that all runners need to work on in order to improve. But if you tailor your workouts to your unique physiology, you can continue to get stronger through your master's years and beyond. A master's runner himself (by European standards), this week's podcast guest is Eoin Everard. He is a physiotherapist with a PhD in Biomechanics. He's also a sub-4 minute miler, a sub-14 minute 5k runner, and a five-time Irish National Champion in the 1500 and 3000m. As an elite runner and chartered physiotherapist, Eoin brings an incredible amount of knowledge and experience to the athletes he works with.  Having faced his own struggles with injuries over the years, Eoin has learned how to change his approach to training to get the most from his body while also staying healthy. Since becoming a European Master's athlete, he has focused less on exact splits and more on running by effort. Eoin and I dig deep into a variety of training related topics, including: His unique insights on training and how to stay healthy The differences between neuromuscular-type runners and aerobic oriented runners, also known as finding your superpower Developing workouts that play to your unique strengths How to stay healthy as a master's runner The importance of strength training and specific activation work Why strides are the best thing since sliced bread! A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.  Thank you Ice Barrel! Ice Barrel makes at-home barrels you can use for ice baths that don't take up an entire room. And they're lightweight enough that even I can carry it without help. There's an easy drain system and it's made in the United States from 100% recycled material. Cryotherapy has been shown to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and reduce inflammation. It can reduce pain and blood flow to jump start the recovery process. Cold plunges are great for when you need extra recovery, like if you accidentally ran a lot longer or faster than planned.  But the real reason I love a good cold plunge is because of the profound mental benefits. It's been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, improve mood and brain function, and even 5 minutes gives you a great shot of dopamine afterward. If you can sit in an ice bath up to your shoulders, you won't have any mental issues with racing a negative split and finishing strong! Go to IceBarrel.com and use discount code strengthrunning for $125 off your barrel.

In this episode: Hydration status is an important factor for performance especially in warmer environments. Recently though, research has emerged suggesting that as you become dehydrated it not only becomes harder to perform at the same level but the perception of effort is also affected. I look at the science and evaluate how much the effect is, when it becomes an issue and what can be done to prevent it. Plus, a conversation with Irish physiotherapist and competitive runner Eoin Everard on how to understand running injuries so that we can better strategize how to avoid them. Do you ever feel like you are missing out on key training elements that could actually help you get faster and stronger? If you are stuck in a plateau or a cycle of injury, there are some changes that can help. Eoin Everard is a physiotherapist with a PhD in Biomechanics who studies what makes runners faster and stronger. He's the founder of everardpilates.com. and he certainly has discovered what works on himself. Eoin has won 5 national senior running titles, has represented Ireland on the international stage from 800m to 10k Cross Country. He is a sub 4 minute miler and ran sub 14 minutes for 5k just last year. Finally, he is the current indoor 3000m European O35 champion. And besides all of that, Eoin is utterly delightful to talk to. We went a little longer than usual with this conversation, because there is just so much good stuff! You'll learn: Eoin's 3 minute drill to add on to a run to get more power, why you should not bother to fix your form on the run, and  why static stretching is not as evil as you might think it is for runners. This is an amazing conversation that I promise you'll learn a lot from. And if that's not enough, Eoin is giving all of the Run to the Top listeners a free download of his super helpful ebook for runners called  "Get to the line in the best shape possible."   Connect, Comment, Community Follow RunnersConnect on Instagram Join the Elite Treatment where you get first dibs on everything RTTT each month! To claim this offer head to metpro.co/rttt LMNT When coaching endurance runners of all levels to be their best, I always emphasize the need for proper hydration with the right balance of electrolytes. Most athletes I've coached are surprised to learn that their sodium needs are actually much higher than they expected and it's been hurting their performance.  Part of the reason athletes need much more sodium than they think is not just because they lose electrolytes through their sweat, but also because athletes tend to eat very healthy diets. They've been told that salt is a bad thing in food and frequently don't get enough for their lifestyle.  Much of the science of sodium is based on people who eat highly processed diets which also are very low in potassium. It could actually be the low potassium levels causing the issues that sodium has been blamed for!  What is clear is that both sodium and potassium at the proper levels are essential for high performance (and for life in general!).  That's why we partnered with LMNT to offer a free sample pack of their electrolyte mix. Head to drinklmnt.com/runnersconnect to get yours now. The Sample Pack includes 8 packets of LMNT (2 citrus, 2 raspberry, 2 orange, and 2 raw unflavored).
