With the chestnut harvest season approaching, we have our annual chestnut themed episode today with a true living legend in the field of tree crops research, Dick Jaynes. On today's episode we discuss Dick's decades of research on hybrid chestnuts, specific cultivars that emerged from his breeding work, limitations to commercial chestnut growing, Nut Tree Culture in North America (the handbook he published with the Northern Nut Growers Association) and a variety of other related topics. If you are interested in reading some of Dick's published work, try searching google scholar or jstor for Richard A. Jaynes with keywords like chestnut or Castanea. Alternatively, you could try to hunt down a copy of Nut Tree Culture in North America. The book is out of print, but resellers are still circulating copies. Finally, if you join the Northern Nut Growers Association you can gain access to a massive pdf that is a digitized version of all of the NNGA annual reports, where Dick contributed for many years. Linked below are a few of his published articles that don't require a school or library login to view. Finally, check out Broken Arrow Nursery in Hamden, CT for all of your rare tree and plant needs! Our thirty-eighth tree, the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa). A mighty tree, but actually a non-native archeophyte; one whose fruit has both fattened us and inspired us. We soak the chestnuts in sugar, we sing christmas songs about them, and they've inspired histories greatest fable-fabricators to have a LOT of fun! So, whether you want stories of 4000 year old trees growing in the shadow of a volcano and sheltering 100 horsemen, or myths about a horny Roman god wanting to make illegitimate love-tadpoles with a water nymph, or simply the tried and tested Renaissance tale of Alexander the chestnut-depraved Borgia Pope and the joy of sharing his nuts with his cardinals... this tree has it all! (Special thanks to Francois Arnaud for adding his voice to this episode.) This month, Bill and Steve look into the fall and (potential) rise of the American chestnut (Castanea dentata), and they're joined by Erik Danielson, Stewardship Coordinator of the Western NY Land Conservancy. The Conservancy recently embarked on an effort to acquire the Allegany Wildlands, a unique piece of property that harbors, among its many abundant ecological treasures, remnant American chestnuts. Erik guides Bill and Steve through the property, and, in part 1 of this episode, they discuss the history of the chestnut and the blight that caused its downfall. In part 2, they share how past and present research come together to create a realistic plan for bringing the American chestnut back. Throughout both parts, Erik shares how the Allegany Wildlands fit into the Conservancy's ambitious effort to create the Western NY Wildway, a network of connected protected lands stretching from Pennsylvania to the Great Lakes and beyond.

This episode is all about the work being done by The American Chestnut Foundation and their partners to save the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) from extinction. Ravaged by an invasive fungal pathogen, this tree went from a dominant species in our forest to a spattering of dwindling stump sprouts barely hanging on in the understories of eastern North American forests. Join me as I sit down with Director of Restoration, Sara Fitzsimmons, to talk about the amazing, multifaceted efforts being put forth to restore this native tree to its former glory. In 2012, two years after its first store opened, Drybar announced that it had closed $16 million in financing with private equity firm Castanea Partners. Since then, Drybar has raised more than $50 million in venture capital to date. And just last month, Drybar sold its product line for $255 million in cash to Helen of Troy, a consumer group with a portfolio that includes OXO, Braun, and Hot Tools. It's been a long journey, and there's no one better to discuss the ups and downs of Drybar's money story than Steve Berg, Castanea's managing partner. Steve catches up with Michael and Alli to discuss the early days of raising money at Drybar, finding new investments and working with beauty companies, and his new firm called Stride Partners. Plus, he answers the most common money questions Alli's gets from entrepreneurs in her DMs. Learn more @castaneapartners. Abstract – The ectomycorrhizal community structure in Beech coppices of different age The species composition of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal communities can be strongly influenced by the sylvicultural practises, abiotic and biotic factors, which determine interactions among the species. In order to determine the influence of the coppicing on EM community, shoot age, bedrock types, exposure, slope, humus features, soil conditions, sampling points locations were taken into account as the most representative and influencing factors in these soil ecological dynamics. In summer 2005, 2006 and 2007, in 7 [2-48-years-old] Beech [Fagus sylvatica (L.) Karst.] coppices located in the Province of Trento (northern Italy), a monitoring on the the root tipes was applied to compare these sites, and to give an additional instrument like a synthetic biological indicator for the traditional management strategies. In the present study the results confirmed the ectomycorrhizal community structure investigated in 7 beech coppices of different age was typical with the occurrence of few abundant species and many others with significantly lower abundance. Cenococcum geophilum was the most frequently detected species in each site and in each sample date. Morphological, anatomical and molecular investigations revealed a total of 60 anatomotypes. Of these 35 were unknown on Fagus sylvatica up to now. The investigations on the community composition can be considered a great contribution to the biodiversity of the Beech forest, with four detailed species descriptions: Fagirhiza byssoporioides, Fagirhiza entolomoides, Fagirhiza stellata and Hygrophorus penarius. Additional investigations using stable isotopes were necessary to understand the parasitic attitude shown by this species in these coppices. The investigation of the ECM community composition (species richness evenness, and dispersion, vitality and rate of mycorrhization) in relation to shoot age and to the main ecological factors revealed the absence of a real reaction to the coppicing, and the major importance of the slope or other ecological conditions to understand the species distribution. An aggregation of the species was releaved, but the species features didn't show a clear correlation with the ecological stand conditions, concerning the spatial distribution and the soil horizons. The results suggest that the coppice treatment in Beech, didn't have a significant effect on the EM community structure since 2 until 48 years from coppicing. Considering the stability of the EM community as a bioindicator of the ecosystem resilience, it can be supposed that a rational coppicing treatment could be a sustainable human activity, compatible with the ecosystem dynamics under these environmental conditions. Two more EM descriptions were performed: Pseudotomentella humicola on Picea abies and Sistotrema muscicola on Castanea sativa.
