“One of the things I've noticed is that a lot of those younger people are actually much nicer than they need to be. And they have to realize that this is going to be your world. It turns out the way you want to make it and so you should be thinking now about what you want out of this. What do you want that world to be? Do not wait around until the two generations beyond you have gone ahead and done it the way they want it because, by the time they get done, you're not going to have the chance to shift it to where you want it. So start thinking now about where do you want to be? What is the future you want? And don't be nice about it, just go ahead and start planning it now.”Mike Pondsmith is an accomplished roleplaying, tabletop, and video game designer. We've been radio silent for about a month (blush emoji). The holidays were a blast though and we're glad to be back! In this episode, we praise Castle Falkenstein, polish our health system, reveal our skills, and do a little bit of scatting.
Why is it important? (01:00) Who tracks the initiative? (03:50) Tracking init was considered one of the holy duties of the GM. But does it have to be? See our episode on Sharing GM Responsibilities. Different initiative mechanics: D&D (2E-5E) & Pathfinder (06:20): You roll a d20 for Initiative. (skip to 07:00 to hear us digress to D&D 1E). Pathfinder 2nd (08:14): The skill used for Initiative is determined by the circumstances. Shadowrun (09:08): Initiative score, a number of d6 determined by the type of thing you're doing, the space in which you act. Then initiative passes, reducing 10 after each pass. Exalted (10:53): Ticks ticking by. Phoenix Dawn Command (13:40): The players move the Torch around, every player gets one action in a cycle. Challenges act between turns, on their speed. Star Wars and Genesis (15:30): Two init skills, cool or vigilance. Results become slots, into which each PC or NPC can be inserted once per round. Conan D20 (17:20): You all act before NPCs unless an NPC has an ability or GM spends Doom. One Roll Engine (ORE) (19:15): Declaring at the same time, or by order of Sense stat from low to high. Widest first, Height is the tiebreaker. Getting hit means you're losing a die from a set. Savage Worlds (21:45): Everyone draws cards, some special abilities allow you to re-draw better. Mouse Guard (22:45): Acting in three rounds, choose from 4 options in secret. Apocalypse World (24:54): No such thing as structured gameplay, only different paces. Mistborn Adventure Game (26:52): During Conflicts, you declare actions by order of Wits, high to low, then act in the opposite order, low to high. Changing your declared action invokes a penalty on your roll, which can be quite harsh. (Eran did a whole review on the system, check it out at https://www.eranaviram.me/review-mistborn-adventure-game). Fate Core (28:40): based on skills usually Notice in combat and Empathy in mental Fate Accelerated (29:16): roll approach based on physical or mental combat. Dramatic Initiative (30:04): The person whose turn just ended decide who goes next. Unfortunately, I couldn't track the person who first wrote about this. If you know who this is - tell me. Additional thoughts on Initiative: Eran's new system (31:28) - some thoughts about the new system that Eran is working on. Duels (33:00) - how to resolve duels (“high noon” style) - example: Undeadwood card duel Castle Falkenstein (35:10) has an interesting system as well. You might want to listen to our episode on Opposed PC Rolls if you want to hear more. Summary (36:10) Taking the load off (37:10) Eran - Finishing up Hell's Rebels, how happy they are that the fight was easier than first perceived Uri - played a session 0 for my new Masks campaigns. Also, Escaping Thalamus's Lab is available on DriveThruRpg.

Castle Falkenstein is a steam-age, Victorian fantasy role playing game that was a cult classic from 1994, originally written by legendary game designer, Mike Pondsmith. The game is getting somewhat of a reboot over at Fat Goblin Games with new supplements and books written by my friend and fellow game designer, James Gray! We will be testing out some "shocking" new fangeled dice mechanics which may upset some Castle Falkenstein purists (only cads and scoundrels play dice), but I think the dice mechanics will definitely bring a new audience to this evocative steam age, Victorian fantasy game. As of the release date of this podcast, the dice mechanics are still being written up and haven't officially been released yet, but they will available soon. Make sure to follow Fat Goblin Games over on Facebook for updates. Also, we still do make use of the Fortune Deck with poker chips in different colors representing the various suits and determining how many dice you can roll based on your specific ability score. Each player also gets two major arcana cards at the beginning of the session that create dramatic twists and turns in the story (using the Second Tarot Variation: An Alternative Fortune Deck for Castle Falkenstein). This game is set in New Orleans in 1876 and our Dramatic Characters are all members of the Theosophical society, a society heavily involved in Spiritualism, Science, and Philosophy and founded their leader, Helena Blavatsky. The setting involves dark subject matter, such as the murderess Delphine LaLaurie and race relations in the South post-Civil War, so keep that in mind before listening to the podcast. If you want any of the house rules I am developing (including an alternate healing option) and a Character Sheet designed by the hosts (Kerry and Kristy Cutsforth), and want access to the Character Creation episode, please consider supporting us over at our patreon account, we'd greatly appreciate it! In this episode, Archie, Ayla, and Eóghan (Owen) are preparing for their trek into the Gulf, making their way to the Grand Isle, where Jean Lafitte used to have his headquarters back in his "privateering" days in the early 1800's. (Basil is absent for this episode, off working on his legendary Alantean Chimera bullets with telegraphic aid from Helena Blavatasy in New York.) Jean Lafitte's ghost and ghost crew are still rumored to be sailing the waters of the coast of the New Orleans, and continue to steal cargo from various ships. The Theosophists are going to try their luck and see about finding the legendary mirror of Soul Seeking, which supposedly will strip vampires of their supernatural abilities, which would be very handy indeed against the vampires of the Knights of the White Camellia. After Basil and Archie end up blowing up Alciabades mansion, they head off on a boat that Aiyla procured to save black children that were kidnapped by the Knights of the White Camellia....racists who became vampires in order to bring the South "back to its former glory." The members are slowing turning prominent and influential members of New Orleans society into vampires, preparing to overtake the town. Lets hope our heroes are able to stop them in time before they (and whatever else the Adversary is orchestrating) destroys the freedom so many died to to gain. Eoughan must decide if he is going to be a double agent for the Adversary (who had the goblins kidnap him and bring him back to the faerie veil). Eoughan used to be involved with Unseelie court and used to be the Adversary's personal hunting dog, before his life was saved by a human. He is in New Orleans to fulfill a boon; to rescue his daughter that was kidnapped and brought to New Orleans for some mysterious reason. The Adversary let him know in no uncertain terms that if he helps out the Theosophists or messes up his schemes for bringing the Unseelie to the United States in large numbers, he will be assassinated with cold iron. Highlights of this episode include: Archie using a gatling gun on a giant crocodile, Aiyla taking the helm of an Aerovette, and Eoughan making a grand entrance, calling Jean Lafitte out. We also learn more about the Foursquare of the Red Tower. Why are the teaming up with the vampires and what are their goals? The second part of the finale with go into more detail, so stay tuned! The Knights of the White Camellia aka the vampires of New Orleans are really angry after the group killed one of their leaders, Delphine LaLaurie. They had already taken the Thesophist's riverboat (that can transform into a submarine), and they also kidnapped 25 black children from the children's hospital ward while everyone in town was at the St. John's Eve Festival at Lake Pontcharian with Marie Laveau. Basil gets sidetracked by a business deal that was too good to pass up....the lawyer and politician, Alciabades DeBlanc, has paid for half of a large shipment of guns upfront and wants Basil to personally deliver them to his residence. Let's just say....things go south pretty quick after that...hilariously so. LIsten to hear more Basil and Archie hijinks and to hear about what Eoughn our formerly Unseelie Black Dog that joined the party mysteriously after they were attacked by vampire's in their client's basement.
