Welcome to your weekly General Aviation news update, and this week we have 3 stories for you; Mental Health Committee issues recommendations, NTSB Warns of Dust devils, Controllers credited with Hypoxia Save. First up, the Mental health ARC has issued a recommendation that pilots are allowed to get “Talk Therapy” from professionals without needing to disclose it on their medicals. The ARC report also discussed the current culture within the aviation industry that contributes to medical disorders not being disclosed including fear of job/income loss, reputation loss, and potential prosecution. Along with culture, the report discusses trust levels between pilots/controllers, the FAA, and AMEs. In total, the report is 164 pages long, including figures, and has 24 total recommendations for the FAA. The FAA has received the report and is in the process of reviewing it. We'll keep you updated if we see more. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/mental-health-committee-says-pilots-shouldnt-have-to-report-talk-therapy-sessions/ Next up, the NTSB has issued a safety alert for Dust Devils. Dust devils have been present in 170 aviation accidents since 1982, and can pose a serious risk to small aircraft. The small, swirling vortex of air are typically 100 to 300 feet wide, and about 1000 feet tall. Wind speeds can exceed 60mph and are most commonly found in the South West of the United States. The NTSB says that dust devils are commonly invisible and can result in uncommanded roll or yaw inputs along with loss of lift. Should you encounter a dust devil, promptly report it to ATC. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/ntsb-warns-pilots-of-dust-devil-dangers/ Finally, two controllers out of Boston are being credited with a Hypoxia save. Rosella Owen and Scott Elms were controlling a Cessna 310 on a photo mission at 13,500 when they noted the pilot wasn't as responsive as most pilots in the congested airspace. Owen asked if the pilot was okay and was on oxygen, to which he replied he was. The controller determined his performance didn't match the level of experience he had as a pilot and directed him to descend to 9000 feet. Upon descending, radio calls were “getting clearer and sharper every time,”. The pilot later found a kink in the oxygen line. Great job to these controllers out of Boston! https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/controllers-credited-with-hypoxia-save/ Alright, that's it! Have a great week and we'll see you next week.

Episode 1: Wind engineers hunt dust devils Dust devils! Understanding how these short-lived whirlwinds behave may help wind engineers understand tornadoes. In field studies, U of Illinois wind engineer Frank Lombardo collects data on dust devils, which occur more frequently – and are easier (and safer) to capture – than their high-powered relatives. Lombardo's team has recorded more than 50 of these brief, 45 MPH windstorms. Find out how, where, and what the data show. Do we really wonder WHY women kill? We watched the TV series of that name… well a lot of us did. Long before Coercive Control was even a thing, women were responding to it, with dreams of their own domestic revenge. In today's Scarlet Stiletto Bite - the character Cyndi, an ordinary suburban woman does a bit more than dream…Back in 2005, a friend suggested to Julie Waight that she enter the Sisters in Crime Short Story Competition. She plucked out one of her many short stories, (Dust Devils) edited, did a rewrite to comply with the competition criteria and entered. She says she was astonished when she won.Julie: "I wish I could say that was the beginning of my published writing career. It wasn't. I'm old-school, I like the smell of a new book and to feel the paper as I turn a page. I'm not on face book, twitter, or Instagram (whatever that is) and not a computer savvy person. There was a close call when a publishing company in the UK wanted to publish my novel Kindred, but the company folded before that happened (something to do with Brexit?)– this opportunity only arose when an interested work student did all the research and sent my novel online – something I can't seem to do myself.Obviously, I require an agent! (Anyone interested?) I've written four novels and over thirty short stories. Thank you to Sisters in Crime, who allowed me to see my work in published form!"CreditsConcept designer, co-producer and narrator: Susanna LobezCo-producer: Carmel ShuteAnnouncer: Leigh RedheadProduction Manager: Tim CoyGraphic Designer: Caz BrownMusic: sampled and inspired by ProkofievCopyright Sisters in Crime Australia 2023

He now enjoys flying in is very own LS8-18 Dave shares some great stories with us like the time he was not sure if he was going to make it back to the glider port but remembered he had been in this situation before in the same area during simulation flying in Condor what happens next may surprise you? In mid May Dave did a 240 mile flight that completed the altitude and distance requirements for his Silver Badge, as well as the requirements for his Gold Distance and the Diamond Goal. On a fun note, he recently flew a 114 mile run to the North west ridges and retrieved the Boomerang plaque from the Front Royal club after they landed at Merlin and claimed it on 5/15. He will better explain the Boomerang during our chat. Dave's only regret? he wishes he would have discovered this amazing sport earlier! We will then head to the Netherlands for our new segment "Simon Says" as Flying Simon talks about one of his favorite soaring activities...flying contest. Our Listener logbook is back today as we head to the Hangars in Tehachapi California and dust off the pages of some vintage glider logbooks that hold some amazing stories from World War II and more. Christopher Stevenson chats with Doug Fronius a vintage glider owner and enthusiast. Have you ever been bored in the Cockpit while in the air? Is that even possible? Dale Masters will bring us another soaring Tale and this one is titled Stir Crazy! All that and much more now on episode 95! www.soaringthesky.com www.patreon.com/soaringthesky

Dust devils — those updrafts of rotating air you see in parking lots or in the desert — have been studied by scientists since the mid-19th century. But this science has seen a resurgence since the 1970's when we started sending spacecraft to mars, where dust devils have been found in abundance. We talk with a Boise State University professor who hopes to learn more about the devils on the red planet by looking closer at the phenomenon in the high desert of Eastern Oregon and Southern Idaho.

The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 7. Activities and events from Friday June 21 through Thursday July 4 Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 7, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday June 21 through Thursday July 4. And now, this weeks tidbit of Sandwich history… It’s not commonly known, the Sandwich area played an instrumental role in the Underground Railroad. In case your knowledge of 19th century American History is a bit weak, the Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early to mid–1800s. It was used by African-American slaves to escape into free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and others who were sympathetic to their cause. The William Eddy home on Somonauk Creek was one of the underground stations (or safe houses), as were the Beveridge home in Somonauk and the Stewards’ home in Plano. Escaping slaves usually entered Illinois from Missouri and traveled north to Chicago on their way to freedom in Canada. One route passed along the present line of the Burlington Railway. Our latest podcast with Matt Senior and Jesse Williams is on dust devils. The Scientific American describes dust devils as small, rotating columns of air that we can see because of the dust and debris they pick up from the ground, resulting from a mini-weather system that occurs when one piece of ground heats up faster than the ground surrounding it on a hot, calm, dry day. They are also defined as heated thermal sources that should have been triggered but have become super heated, so that when they do release they do so with a surprising vehemence. Extremely dangerous near the ground, expert pilots do use them in competitions and during cross-country flying. In this podcast we talk about the dangers, safety, some tips and just how beautiful they are.
