In her writing, it is Kate DiCamillo's gift to make bearable the fact that joy and sorrow live so close, side by side, in life as it is (if not as we wish it to be). In this conversation, along with good measures of raucous laughter and a few tears, Kate summons us to hearts "capacious enough to contain the complexities and mysteries of ourselves and each other" — qualities these years in the life of the world call forth from all of us, young and old, with ever greater poignancy and vigor.Kate DiCamillo has written many bestselling books, beloved by children and adults in touch with their inner eight-year-old, for two decades, including Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, The Magician's Elephant, Flora & Ulysses, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Some of these have been turned into operas and movies. Her new books in 2024 include the middle grade novel Ferris and Orris and Timble: The Beginning. A bumper episode this week, starting with a deep dive into the new Estée Lauder Legacy x Frederic Malle collection of brilliantly re-imagined classics, there's also a discussion of a limited-edition Serges Lutens that delights Suzy and disturbs Nicola, and an incredible MEMO fragrance that transports you to a gloriously unique landscape in Turkey. And here's something different – we focus on the fascinating question sent in by a listener who's lucky enough to be going to the @taylorswift ERAS tour and wants to know how we'd scent it. So, we went one step further and have matched a fragrance for every major album, reflecting the mood shift and growth process in each perfume choice... Do you agree, or would you have chosen differently? How would YOU scent the tour? Or perhaps there's a musician / film / book / TV Show or some other art form you'd like us to ‘scent match'? How to address public crisis implies a nation's complicated institutional setting of economic, political, and cultural preferences and tolerance. A society's resilience in mitigating the crisis, from environmental pollution disasters to global pandemics to climate change, depends on the interaction between crisis and evolving institutions. In other word, it relies on whether policymakers are able to learn lessons from crises and renew institutions in order to face future challenges. Fighting the COVID-19 pandemic is a showcase and unique experience for each country around the world to reflect what successful policy measurements may be applied to mitigate even larger crises like climate change. In today's episode, Dr. Peter Orris, Professor of occupational & environmental medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago Health System, provides not only a comprehensive understanding of the American pandemic control experience from a public health expert point of view but also offers some historical and social-cultural analysis on the difference of policy interventions among diverse economies. For example, what were the dilemmas for the World Health Organization to deal with during the pandemic? Why had China stuck to the zero COVID policy in a way no other countries could afford?  How can the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. improve to mitigate the next public health crisis? In the end, Dr. Orris proposes a couple of mitigation strategies for addressing climate change based on his decades of experience in civic engagement and environmental activism.

This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Andrea Orris, a seasoned gymnast and veteran collegiate gymnastics coach who is now using her experience to teach the “ins and outs” of effective stretching and to advocate for the fair treatment of gymnasts around the country. Orris, a Los Angeles native, competed in Division 1 collegiate gymnastics before turning her attention towards coaching. She is also a fitness model and a flexibility instructor. In fact, her flexibility courses blossomed during the pandemic, due in large part to her expert social media presence. Andrea is passionate about physical fitness, but she knows that a healthy body is nothing without a strong mind. Andrea has rightly spent her life focusing on both the physical and mental and, as a victim of abuse herself, is setting an example for others on the value of being open and transparent about strengths and struggles. On the podcast, Andrea discusses her own career and her long journey into mental and physical prosperity.   Moving Quotes: "Are you healthy on the inside? Do you look like what you want to look like? That's all that matters.” "People have a misconception about flexibility classes. They say, 'Oh, I can't take your class because I'm not flexible.' But that's the entire point. It's fine if you're not flexible. That's actually even better." "The more we keep talking and sharing our experiences and educating each other, the better chance we have at preventing [abuse] from every happening again." "I've always been a very private person with what I'm going through emotionally and mentally. Until this year. I post about myself a lot because people want to read about genuine people... I've started being very honest with what I'm thinking and feeling." "Setting small attainable goals every day is so much more intrinsically rewarding and more motivating than setting unrealistic goals or goals where you're comparing yourself to someone else. Then you get really discouraged and quit altogether." "If something is in your heart and you're passionate about it and you want to do it, go for it. You have to let go of all of the outside voices." Dan Saladino explores the past, present and future of the most British of drinks, gin. And hears how a new generation of distillers is testing the boundaries of an old and familiar flavour. For decades vodka was the spirit of choice, not just for James Bond, but also for bartenders and mixologists (a recent term for the people who develop new drink recipes and cocktails). But more recently people have been reaching out for more interesting and complex flavours to replace the neutral taste of vodka. Gin was perfect. From as far back as the 12th century apothecaries had used juniper and its coniferous flavours in spirits to heal and revive. By the 17th century the Dutch had given us Geneva or Holland Gin, a rough, whisky like spirit with juniper at its base. As distilling techniques developed in the 19th century it became the refined gin we know today with juniper flavours being delicately mixed with botanicals like coriander, cinnamon, ginger and Orris. It's the challenge of blending and experimenting with these flavours that has attracted a new generation of gin distillers. Dan Saladino explains the history that has made this 21st century gin craze possible and finds out what is now drawing people to what was once Britain's most notorious drink.Producer: Dan Saladino.

Tonight is all about Yule traditions and lots of great ideas for Yule gifts you can make yourself. Lots of great Holiday Reading Specials too! Any Reading in Dec or Jan will get you a free copy of my book - signed, sealed, and delivered to you. Listen in to see what this weeks special is going to be! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are a few of the things I mentioned on the first half of the show tonight - Deities of Yule: All Newborn Gods, Sun Gods, Mother Goddesses, and Triple Goddesses. The best known would be the Dagda, and Brighid, the daughter of the Dagda. Brighid taught the smiths the arts of fire tending and the secrets of metal work. Brighid's flame, like the flame of the new light, pierces the darkness of the spirit and mind, while the Dagda's cauldron assures that Nature will always provide for all the children. Symbolism of Yule: Rebirth of the Sun, The longest night of the year, The Winter Solstice, Introspect, Planning for the Future. Symbols of Yule: Yule log, or small Yule log with 3 candles, evergreen boughs or wreaths, holly, mistletoe hung in doorways, gold pillar candles, baskets of clove studded fruit, a simmering pot of wassail, poinsettias, christmas cactus. Herbs of Yule: Bayberry, blessed thistle, evergreen, frankincense holly, laurel, mistletoe, oak, pine, sage, yellow cedar. Foods of Yule: Cookies and caraway cakes soaked in cider, fruits, nuts, pork dishes, turkey, eggnog, ginger tea, spiced cider, wassail, or lamb's wool (ale, sugar, nutmeg, roasted apples). Incense of Yule: Pine, cedar, bayberry, cinnamon. Colors of Yule: Red, green, gold, white, silver, yellow, orange. Stones of Yule: Rubies, bloodstones, garnets, emeralds, diamonds. Activities of Yule: Caroling, wassailing the trees, burning the Yule log, decorating the Yule tree, exchanging of presents, kissing under the mistletoe, honoring Kriss Kringle the Germanic Pagan God of Yule Spellworkings of Yule: Peace, harmony, love, and increased happiness. Deities of Yule: Goddesses-Brighid, Isis, Demeter, Gaea, Diana, The Great Mother. Gods-Apollo, Ra, Odin, Lugh, The Oak King, The Horned One, The Green Man, The Divine Child, Mabon. ~ Yule Incense Blend ~ INGREDIENTS: 2 parts Frankincense 2 parts Pine needles or resin 1 part Cedar 1 part Juniper Mix and Smolder at Wiccan rites on Yule (on or around Dec. 21st) or during the winter months to cleanse the home and to attune with the forces of nature amid the cold days and nights Make an herbal sachet for Yule. These simple sachets are easy to make, and you can either use them as ornaments on your holiday tree, or give them away as gifts. You'll need the following: Bay Cloves Juniper berries Orange peel, grated Orris root Peppermint Pine Rosemary Squares of your favorite holiday fabric Colorful ribbon Cinnamon sticks Small bells Mix the herbs together in a bowl. Blend varying proportions of each until you've got the scent you want -- here's a hint: start small! Use a spoon to place the blended herbs into the center of a square of fabric. Pull the corners up and tie with the ribbon. Tie a cinnamon stick and a couple of bells in place as well. Use a second piece of ribbon to create a loop so you can hang the sachet if you like. Timesaver tip: you can buy small tulle bags in holiday colors and spoon the herb blend into them. Pull the drawstring closed and tie shut, then hang up on your tree, or give them to a friend. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Yule Incense Blend ~ INGREDIENTS: 2 parts Frankincense 2 parts Pine needles or resin 1 part Cedar 1 part Juniper Mix and Smolder at Wiccan rites on Yule (on or around Dec. 21st) or during the winter months to cleanse the home and to attune with the forces of nature amid the cold days and nights
