(airdate: 8.19/24) Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds never hold back on social media. Ryan actually posted a sweet message for his "bromance" buddy Hugh and it was heartfelt, and we can't figure out why it wasn't smart assed as usual. "Despicable Me" director Chris Renaud asys "no" to live action minion films. Good thing he doesn't work for Disney. Book Vs. Movie: The LoraxThe Dr. Seuss 1971 Children's Book Vs. the 2012 AdaptationThe Margos close out “Banned Books Month” with a visit with Dr. Seuss and The Lorax, a tale of environmental conservation and the dangers of rampant deforestation. Theodore Seuss Geisel was known for his colorful characters, accusations of racism, and having some of his books pulled for outdated notions or controversial take on capitalism. The Lorax (first published in 1971) was written after a recent trip to Africa where Geisel and his wife were concerned about the environment and wildlife in danger of extinction. The Lorax wants “The Onceler” to stop the destruction of the environment. Over the years, many logging companies tried to get the book banned for being “mean” to their industry. So much so that in 1995, two different forest/wood flooring industries raised funds to create their own version called Truax, which supported the logging industry. (Seriously)There was a 1972 faithful adaptation starring Eddie Albert, but in this episode, we discuss the 2012 film starring Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White, and Ed Helms. It's filled with lots of music and rare mentions of the actual book. We have THOUGHTS about this one!In this ep, the Margos discuss:The life and work of Dr. SuessThe inspiration for The Lorax. The reasons schools ban his work. The differences between the book and movieThe cast of the 2012 film: Danny DeVito (The Lorax,) Ed Helms (The Onceler,) Zac Efron (Ted Wiggins,) Taylor Swift (Audrey,) Rob Riggle (Alyosis O'Hare,) Jenny Slate (Mrs. Wiggins,) Betty White (Grammy Norma,) Nasim Pedrad (Isabella,) Stephen Tobolowsky (Uncle Ubb,) Elamrie Wendel (Aunt Grizelda,) Danny Cooksy (Brett & Chet,) Joel Swetow, Michael Beattie, and Chris Renaud.Clips used:Grammy NormaThe Lorax (2012 trailer)Music: John Powell & Cinco PaulBook Vs. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are sucking on bottled air while trying to save the trees. We're talking about the 2012 film from Kyle Bald and Chris Renaud, The Lorax. In a world without trees, without breathable air, without the luxuries of a natural life, there lives a community of people in a city that's both large and curiously small at the same time. This city is called Thneedville. You read that right.A boy likes a girl. This girl dreams of seeing a real life tree at least once in her life. The boy now has a mission. He will risk his life to accomplish it.He meets a curious character named the Once-ler in a barren wasteland. This mustachioed person tells him a grand tale of terrible misdeeds and an eccentric creature called the Lorax. Will the boy get the girl? Will the Once-ler atone for his sins? What the heck is a Lorax? On this episode, the 2022 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza heads to Toon Town as we chat about the, let's just say, not-for-us sensation, Despicable Me! Precisely how many other film properties are we borrowing from with all this? Why does no vocal performance here feel inspired in any way whatsoever? And what in the world is with our society's fascination with these Minions? PLUS: How about an episode of beloved cartoon Doug if written by sentient toilet, Scott Adams!? Despicable Me stars the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher; directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. From 2001 - Two Carthage College faculty members: Dr. Chris Renaud, Professor of Classics .... Dr. Dan Schowalter, Professor of Religion .... and two Carthage students: Elizabeth Hack and Jerry Monson ....discuss their memorable trip to Greece. This conversation underscores the vital importance of such trips, which were made pretty much impossible by the COVID-19 pandemic and which we hope will soon be possible again.
Host Rob Cramer begins the show welcoming former New York Giants tight end Mark Bavaro. Mark talks about the current Giants late season push to make the playoffs, the craziness of games with no crowds during the pandemic and the use of fake crowd noise in the stadiums. Mark also talked about the Super Bowl winning teams he played on with the Giants in 1986 and 1990, playing for Bill Parcells and the genius of Bill Belichick he witnessed in New York while with the Giants and later playing for him in Cleveland with the Browns. Then former New York Rangers captain and current MSG analyst for the Rangers Dave Maloney joined the show to discuss the current Rangers team as they head into the season. Dave talked a bit about the World Junior Championships before briefly getting into his run to the Stanley Cup Finals back in 1979. Then Dave gave his thoughts on the current Rangers team, including the challenges facing the team in the upcoming pandemic shortened season. [00:00] - Show Intro [01:26] - Mark Bavaro joins the show [06:06] - Thoughts on Bill Belichick [10:32] - Notre Dame football [13:48] - 1986 Giants vs 1990 Giants [16:22] - Breaking into the NFL with the Giants and playing for Bill Parcells [23:11] - Playing in New York [27:35] - Dave Maloney joins the show [28:56] - World Juniors [33:01] - Rangers 1979 Stanley Cup run [36:33] - Expectations for the Rangers heading into the season [40:05] - Value of the Rangers playoff experience last season [42:17] - Henrik Lundqvist big shoes to fill for Igor Shesterkin [50:09] - Do the Rangers need to name a captain About Mark Bavaro Mark Bavaro is a former American football tight end who played for the New York Giants (1985–1990), Cleveland Browns (1992), and Philadelphia Eagles (1993–1994) in the National Football League (NFL). Bavaro was selected to the Pro Bowl for his performances in the 1986 and 1987 seasons and was a member of the Giants teams that won Super Bowls XXI and XXV. After an All-American career at the University of Notre Dame, Bavaro was drafted by the Giants in the fourth round (#100 overall) in the 1985 NFL Draft. He quickly emerged as a starter in his rookie season and became renowned during his Giants career for his blocking, toughness, and receiving skills. After a degenerative knee condition forced him to sit out the 1991 season, he returned to play three seasons for the Browns and Eagles before retiring in 1995. Since retiring Bavaro has done work as an anti-abortion activist. His brother David also played in the NFL for four seasons. About Dave Maloney Dave Maloney was drafted 14th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1974 NHL amateur draft. He played 11 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1974–75 until 1984–85.. Maloney played in 657 career NHL games, scoring 71 goals and 246 assists for 317 points, as well as compiling 1154 penalty minutes. He was also the youngest player to serve as Captain for the New York Rangers and captained them to the 1979 Stanley Cup Finals. That same year, Maloney, along with Phil Esposito and other Ranger teammates, recorded a song called the Hockey Sock Rock as a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In 1990, Maloney called the New York Rangers-Washington series on SportsChannel America along with Rick Peckham. From 1995 to 1998, he was a studio analyst for NHL on Fox. He currently serves as the color commentator on Ranger radio broadcasts alongside Kenny Albert. On December 6, 1984, the Rangers traded Maloney and Chris Renaud to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Steve Patrick and Jim Wiemer. Maloney played with his brother Don Maloney while with the Rangers.

Hello and welcome to eighth episode of Fanboy Nation’s Toon-In-Talk, your rendezvous for animation interviews. For animation fans, the release of a new animated film is always exciting. 2015 is going to have a lot of animated films showing on the silver screen, but yo have to wonder what will succeed and what will bomb at the box office. Whitney interviews geek financial analyst Tim Beyers to discuss what 2015 animated movies will be a success and what will fail. Show Notes Tim Beyers writes about geek financial news for The Motley Fool. Last year, he and Whitney discussed which animated films would be successful in 2014 and they repeat the same theme for 2015. Tim thinks that Minions will be this year’s success followed close by Inside Out. Pixar films are still successful, but with the reboot of Disney Animation, the studio has taken the original Pixar magic and inserted it into their own movies. Disney Animation movies have been more successful than Pixar lately, but this could be Pixar’s year with the release of two animated films. Whitney thinks Pixar will do better than Disney. Sequels have a better chance of earning more money than the originals, because the fan base is already established and audiences want to see more. Inside Out has the classic Pixar formula, especially story, but Minions are extremely marketable. Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud do the voice of the minions, not Dee Bradley Baker. Tim and Whitney both love it with professional voice actors get to strut their stuff in feature films. Tim thinks Hotel Transylvania 2 will be the least successful and the Peanuts movie has enough juice to pull ahead. Whitney is optimistic about both. She thinks Monster Trucks will be the least successful and it might be copying the Cars. It’s exciting what is happening with Disney with the number of properties they are releasing. The House of Mouse is becoming the mother of all studios. When Disney does a great job they do a GREAT job, but Whitney doesn’t want the studio to get complacent. In response, Time says Disney is far away from doing that because they’re still competing with Warner Brothers. Big Hero 6 was good, but it was predictable. Story still remains king. Please note Pixar doesn’t make all 3D movies. The Peanuts movie has historical fans, but the franchise is being reintroduced to a whole new generation who aren’t familiar with Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the game. It’s a gamble, however, so were The Muppets. Original ideas are becoming scarce, but they are around and they come from studios with money to burn. Online fundraising platforms, however, do allow creative individuals to raise money for their projects. The Internet allows more creators to put their work out there, but there is a lot more competition. The hardest part of making a creative property is making the actual property. Tim declares that the next three years in animated entertainment is a new golden age of cartoons, animation, and more. Just for fun, this interview rounds out with Tim’s interview from last year.
The franchise concludes as we return to Jesse and Céline's relationship after another 9-year hiatus. We talk a little bit about how the film could have made more sense, but a lot about the beauty of Linklater's film-making and the way that he draws out the links with the other films. This Week's Watching BROADCHURCH (2013—): Chris Chibnall, David Tennant, Olivia Coleman WESTWORLD (2016—): Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, Evan Rachel Wood HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER (2014—): Peter Nawalk, Viola Davis, Billy Brown THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS (2016): Chris Renaud, Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet Recommendations 500 DAYS OF SUMMER (2009): Mark Webb, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER (1962): Tony Richardson, Alan Sillitoe, Tom Courtenay ZORBA THE GREEK (1964): Michael Cacoyannis, Nikos Kazantzakis, Anthony Quinn THE LOBSTER (2015): Yorgos Lanthimos, Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz Footnotes Firstly, here are a couple of articles about a fourth film (which we hope doesn't happen). And finally, here's Walter Lassally's IMDB page (the newspaper articles linked to are great).

Cute, lovely, adorable, how many words with the same connotation can you come up with? Well, you'd better start taking your vocabulary lesson now, because once you've seen the second installment of the Despicable Me series, you’ll be searching your brain for words to describe the irresistible charm that directors Pierre Coffin , Chris Renaud and their team have tried to instill in their latest product. In the first episode, super villain Gru realized his dream of stealing the moon and in the process adopted three orphan girls. Now as a father, Gru has retired from his evil business and focuses his productive capacity on making jam and jelly. But his peaceful days don't last long because a new super villain is out there wreaking havoc and Gru is called in by the Anti-Villain League for assistance. Undercover AVL agent Lucy Wilde is his partner. Despite the success of the first installment, the viewers and critics have mixed feelings about the sequel. On the one hand, the previous piece is packed with all kinds of cuteness that one just cannot get enough. From Gru's East European accent to the lovely faces of the little girls, exquisite animation technique has projected amazing comical effects into the pictures, with the little yellow minions being the highlight of the film. In the second installment, these yellow critters are naturally given much more screen time, they are the magic word that lures the viewers into cinemas. On the other hand, the various forms of cuteness are not enough to save the botched addition. First of all, we liked the first installment because it offered a fresh perspective of a villain, which is not very often seen in animated comedies. And by the end of “Despicable Me”, the villain Gru ended his bad guy career and became a nice guy, removing one of the major attractions about the film. As a result, the second installment places the focus on romance and family relations, that’s basically not different from any other cartoon movies. Also, if you take away the cute distractions, there is little else left in the film. In fact, the story doesn't really hold together. Even the pacing is flawed because everything has to make way for the rib-tickling every now and then. In the midst of all that laughing, the more story-conscious viewers would probably wonder when will be the next sign for story development. Well, they need a lot of patience for that. “Despicable Me 2” has achieved top-notch visual and comical effects, but if the series is going to last long, they’ll need much more than that. On a scale from one to ten, I give “Despicable Me 2” a seven.
