"Somebody had to f***ing do it" - The Paradox on being representation pioneers in the emo/pop-punk sceneAt Riot Fest 2025, we sat down with The Paradox, the rising pop-punk band that's redefining what representation looks like in alternative music. From their formation in July 2024 to landing a major tour with All Time Low, Mayday Parade, Four Year Strong, and The Cab, their journey has been nothing short of meteoric. The band gets real about being Black artists in a predominantly white genre, discussing how they're creating the representation they needed in high school. We explore their debut album NSFW, their influences ranging from Taking Back Sunday to Neck Deep, and why being "crybabies" who tell each other "I love you" is actually their greatest strength. This conversation bridges the classic emo era with today's scene, showing how The Paradox is both honoring the past and pushing the genre forward.Key Topics & Timestamps:[00:00] Introduction and the most emo songs they're listening to[01:06] What makes The Paradox so emo - embracing emotions as men[01:53] Discussion of their new album NSFW[02:38] Their first show at Concord and covering Taking Back Sunday[02:55] The band's meteoric rise since forming in 2024[03:15] Upcoming tour with All Time Low, Mayday Parade, and more[03:56] Small bands to watch: Custodians, Zealand, Super Sometimes, Barry Hendricks, Kawaii AF[04:40] Being Black artists in pop-punk and creating necessary representation[05:51] Where to find The Paradox and tour informationEpisode Highlights:"We're very emotional men... On today's episode, an episode from our friends at Sotheby's exploring the remarkable collecting journey of Pauline Karpidas, one of the most influential art patrons of the past fifty years. Ahead of Sotheby's landmark sale of her extraordinary Surrealist collection this September, collector Tiquio Acentio, curator Jasper Sharp, and Sotheby's Worldwide Chairman of Impressionist and Modern Art Helena Newman will join broadcaster and art historian Kate Bryan to reflect on Karpidas' unique eye, her friendships with artists, and the broader role of women as cultural custodians. From Peggy Guggenheim to Dominique de Menil and beyond, women collectors have long shaped the direction of modern and contemporary art. What drives them? How do personal connections influence collecting? And how does a home become a curated world? With insights into the upcoming auction and the stories behind the works, this talk will offer a portrait of a life in art – and celebrate those who collect with connoisseurship, curiosity and conviction. In Ystad, Sweden, every night at 9pm a night watchman scans the horizon for fires from the tower of St Mary's Church, and sounds his trumpet to let the city know it is safe. This tradition goes back to the Medieval Ages. The Night Watchman of Ystad is one of the last keeping his tradition, and today his role has taken on an even bigger significance. Author and journalist Eliot Stein takes us through the evolution of the night watchman. Read more in Eliot's book, Custodians of Wonder.

If you're a fan of the show, you know I love a good concept album. And when I found out there were local Indy prog musicians creating a concept album just down the road from me? I had to have them over to discuss it! This episode, I sat down with StarChaser, the medium-bending band led by the visionary Kara Tucker (vocals/guitar) and her husband Nick Tucker (bass/guitar). Dorian Phelps rounds out the trio on drums. More than just musicians, Nick and Kara bring together art, fashion, and storytelling to create a world around their music. Since Kara and Nick are locals, I actually got to have them over to the Michael's Mixdown studio for an in-person chat! In this conversation, they share how their artistic backgrounds shape StarChaser's identity, from the bold visual aesthetics and stage presence to the deeply personal stories woven into their lyrics, and the music they love that inspires them. Whether you're drawn in by the sound, the look, or the stories behind it all, this episode offers a closer look at the creative heartbeat of Indianapolis' own StarChaser. All the links!https://www.youtube.com/@JuJu_StarChaserhttps://starchaser1.bandcamp.com/album/tsars-of-the-universehttps://www.instagram.com/jujustarchaser/Find my other show, The Custodians, here: https://shows.acast.com/the-custodians Hosted on Acast. It's Country Rugby League Round in the NRL honouring the huge contribution made to the game by those from the bush. Few clubs have done more than the Gerringong Lions and old boy Ashton Sims (1:20:38) is now running the Group 7 Division and he is taking the responsibility seriously. He told Glen Lauder, Luke Lewis and John Gibbs that it's important for others in his position to make sure they leave the game in better shape than they found it. Meanwhile Manly utility Jazz Tevaga (31:07) said he's still hopeful of leaving the club on a high note by sneaking in to finals - maybe with a try for the season. Plus Lewey and Gibbsy tackle the big topics of the week in 6 Again (10:06) and First Thought (45:40) is suitably on Country Rugby League players.

The agents made their way toward the Jumentierre Estate, and found improvised Valkyrie fliers that would give the Crimson Brothers advantage in the fight. The area was guarded by two Hereteks and a swarm of servo skulls, so Morgan opted for a stealth approach. She sent data from a nearby cogitator to CLO53T, who confirmed that Talos Ivo was meant to be on one of the ships, but when the Judge and their seconded Arbitrators shots at the Hereteks, the servo skull swarm suddenly broke their surveillance pattern and set their sights on the agents. Having escaped the Flensing House, the band took a short rest to treat their wounds and regroup, now in the company of two Arbitrators and a soldier. The Judge's wounds were severe, but only after Morgan pressured him, did he allow Damien to heal him with powers from the warp. Solomon, meanwhile, noticed the Judge having a private conversation with Damien and returning healed, and so began to record evidence of his companions' tendencies towards heresy. Morgan showed her rosette to second the Arbitrators to their mission, and they began to make their way to the Jumentierre Estate, where they should finally find Talos Ivo. This week's Cool Conversation is between Kenton and Richard Pyne, CEO of British clothing brand Páramo. Right from the offset, we understand that Páramo is unique: Richard describes himself as the Custodian of the brand, rather than the CEO; he tells us that the company is employee-owned; he tells us they have been repairing garments for customers for 30 years, whilst most others have only recently started to offer this; and he tells us that they designed their products by mimicking mammals - how does an otter stay dry and warm, even when his fur is soaked through? Most remarkable of all, Richard explains how the brand got its name from a range of mountains in the Andes and how the unlikely pairing of a nun and an entrepreneur has created untold opportunities for women and families in Colombia. This is the story of a brand that holds on tight to its values, that lobbies much bigger industry players to contribute to the circular economy, and that cares about people.

If you were to visit a cigar factory in Cuba, you'd hear something unexpected: the sound of the daily news report, or maybe a poem or a novel, being read aloud. The cigar “reader” is a tradition held by just a handful of people, and it came from a fundamentally revolutionary idea. Eliot Stein, author of Custodians of Wonder, joins Dylan to explain.

The inquisitorial band trudged through the battlefield wasteland, heading toward the northernmost hive of Arcturus IV, in the hopes of retrieving their Heretek target, Talos Ivo. At a checkpoint into the underhive, they were forced to prove they were in fact Khornate cultists. To avoid carving the symbol of Khorne into their own flesh, Morgan grabbed the flight officer they had saved from the wreckage, and carved the symbol into her instead. They then made their way to the mids and The Flensing House, to extract their target. Featuring players Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, Josh Halbot, and Tyler Hewitt, and Dungeon Master Ryan LaPlante. In this conversation, T.J. van Gerven and Adam discuss the concept of self-directed IRAs, exploring their differences from traditional IRAs, the potential for investing in alternative assets, and the role of custodians. Adam shares insights on the benefits and risks associated with self-directed IRAs, including compliance issues and the importance of education. They also touch on investment strategies, Roth conversions, and the flexibility of various retirement accounts, emphasizing the long-term wealth-building potential of these financial tools. Takeaways Self-directed IRAs allow investment in alternative assets beyond stocks and ETFs. The term 'self-directed IRA' is not defined in the tax code; it's a marketing term. Investors can use their IRAs to invest in real estate, hedge funds, and cryptocurrencies. There are only three prohibited transactions with IRAs: life insurance, collectibles, and self-dealing. Custodians play a crucial role in managing self-directed IRAs and ensuring compliance. Self-directed IRAs are not more popular due to lack of marketing from large financial institutions. Roth conversions can be a strategic way to manage tax liabilities on investments. Valuation of non-publicly traded assets is important for compliance and reporting purposes. Various types of retirement accounts can be self-directed, including HSAs and solo 401(k)s. Long-term investment strategies and starting early are key to building wealth. Their mission is jeopardized when teenage paranormal enthusiast Sam Evans accidentally breaks the seal and unleashes Hell on Earth.
