Bundjalung man, Jack Manning Bancroft's scholarship to a prestigious Sydney University college showed him a rarefied world that shocked him, and he used his childhood grit to channel his energy into a world-changing project.Jack's mother is Bundjalung artist, Bronwyn Bancroft. Growing up in inner-Sydney, he was intimidated by her artistic drive and threw himself into sport, because that was the only way a young Jack thought a man could have influence in the world. When he was ten the family moved to Bundjalung country to spend time with his mum's side of the family. The local kids refused to accept that Jack was Aboriginal. He escaped into fantasy books and wrote long letters home to his dad, Ned Manning, in Sydney.Jack received a scholarship to St Paul's College at the University of Sydney and vowed to use his opportunity to increase the number of Indigenous kids at university. The Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) was born and Jack has since used his position to forge connections between communities to foster understanding across the world.Further informationWatch Australian Story featuring Jack and his partner, Yael Stone on iview.Listen to Jack's dad, Ned Manning, on Conversations in 2022.This episode of Conversations was produced by Alice Moldovan. If you were to visit a cigar factory in Cuba, you'd hear something unexpected: the sound of the daily news report, or maybe a poem or a novel, being read aloud. The cigar “reader” is a tradition held by just a handful of people, and it came from a fundamentally revolutionary idea. Eliot Stein, author of Custodians of Wonder, joins Dylan to explain.

The inquisitorial band trudged through the battlefield wasteland, heading toward the northernmost hive of Arcturus IV, in the hopes of retrieving their Heretek target, Talos Ivo. At a checkpoint into the underhive, they were forced to prove they were in fact Khornate cultists. To avoid carving the symbol of Khorne into their own flesh, Morgan grabbed the flight officer they had saved from the wreckage, and carved the symbol into her instead. They then made their way to the mids and The Flensing House, to extract their target. Featuring players Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, Josh Halbot, and Tyler Hewitt, and Dungeon Master Ryan LaPlante. In this conversation, T.J. van Gerven and Adam discuss the concept of self-directed IRAs, exploring their differences from traditional IRAs, the potential for investing in alternative assets, and the role of custodians. Adam shares insights on the benefits and risks associated with self-directed IRAs, including compliance issues and the importance of education. They also touch on investment strategies, Roth conversions, and the flexibility of various retirement accounts, emphasizing the long-term wealth-building potential of these financial tools. Takeaways Self-directed IRAs allow investment in alternative assets beyond stocks and ETFs. The term 'self-directed IRA' is not defined in the tax code; it's a marketing term. Investors can use their IRAs to invest in real estate, hedge funds, and cryptocurrencies. There are only three prohibited transactions with IRAs: life insurance, collectibles, and self-dealing. Custodians play a crucial role in managing self-directed IRAs and ensuring compliance. Self-directed IRAs are not more popular due to lack of marketing from large financial institutions. Roth conversions can be a strategic way to manage tax liabilities on investments. Valuation of non-publicly traded assets is important for compliance and reporting purposes. Various types of retirement accounts can be self-directed, including HSAs and solo 401(k)s. Long-term investment strategies and starting early are key to building wealth. The Custodians is a thrilling supernatural series centered around a clandestine group of demon hunters operating out of a seemingly ordinary high school. For millennia, the Custodians have battled demons and locked them away in The Void, an ancient prison holding countless monsters. As the years have gone by, The Custodians have faded into obscurity, and the last of their lineage is tasked with guarding The Void. Their mission is jeopardized when teenage paranormal enthusiast Sam Evans accidentally breaks the seal and unleashes Hell on Earth. Sam, along with the other Custodians, must learn to control his unpredictable powers and recapture escaped demons, all while navigating high school life and uncovering deeper, more sinister plots in a world that has forgotten monsters ever roamed the Earth. At the height of the Incan empire, a series of 200 woven suspension bridges crisscrossed the valleys of the Andes. Today, only one remains. It's called the Q'eswachaka, and it's rewoven every year by a continuous line of bridge builders. Journalist Eliot Stein traveled to Peru to meet the current bridge builder, and to witness this incredible tradition. His book, Custodians of Wonder, chronicles traditions like these across the globe, and the people preserving them. Sometimes those memories are about how they led their classes, making everyone feel accepted and valued, and sometimes we recall a humorous moment, or maybe a hat or other accessory that became that teacher's "brand." More often, however, we look back fondly on how that teacher made us feel, what he or she did to help us learn, or the way their concern and understanding was conveyed to us. If you are a great teacher now, you are also building a storehouse of memories. Thank you. If you don't serve in a teaching role, you know someone who does, regardless of their job title. Take a moment to share a word of appreciation with that person. Great teachers make a difference. Our guest this week is one of the most unique characters in the surf world. He's an aggressive stock day-trader, a conspiracy theorist on just about every topic, a passionate amateur archaeologist, a part-time janitor for a school district, and an actor! But more than anything, he is one of the most “CORE” surfers we know. For over 30 years, he has been traveling the globe and scoring perfect waves. Whether he's constantly glued to Surfline or has developed some secret formula blending swell, wind, and tide data (we're not sure). What we do know is If he is out in the lineup, then you're probably at the best spot on the coast, if not in the entire world. His uncanny ability to quick-strike the world's best swells comes down to his secret weapon, his ultra-rare “Golden Ticket” airline pass, which has unlocked access to every bucket-list wave on the planet. Please welcome the most interesting man in the surf world, Mr. Tom “REZZY” Rezvan.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
