My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is X. Ho Yen, author of the book Custodians of the Future. X. Ho Yen writes realism-based sci fi because you'll never meet a less magic-minded person, and he's in his own autistic world anyway. An aerospace engineer and lifetime space nerd, he thinks on scales of time and space ranging from the quantum to the cosmological. As an autistic, mixed genetics CPTSD survivor and child of immigrants, he's a feminist and has the widest definition of personhood, and a strong personal emphasis on human nature. His fiction is irreverent, inclusive, hopepunk, literary sci fi, and he's happy to leave science fantasy and standard tropes to those better equipped for it.   In my book review, I stated Custodians of the Future is a science fiction novel by X. Ho Yen. Although not usually a science fiction reader, I loved the sarcastic wit and great character development in this book. We quickly meet a crew whose job is to keep the water treatment system working correctly. They are a rag-tag bunch living in a time where the world is "perfect" according to the government, but people are starting to wonder otherwise. That's when they discover a virus in the water treatment plant and begin a quest to stop all of Stockholm from dying.   Except - Irena is new to the group and wants everyone to like her, so she doesn't stop three of them from all their conspiracy theory ideas. And the fifth? He's wacky and talks to himself like a member of Star Trek. All of this leads them on some crazy adventures with the clock ticking down to midnight.   This novel is fun, fast-paced, and will keep you guessing. This week we look at improving the health of children and young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through participation. “The MJA acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which we live and work across Australia.  This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Wangal people. I pay my respects to their Elders past and present.”  Dr Jordan Cory a Kamilaroi woman and Bonnie Dukakis a Gunditjmara woman who were co-authors of an MJA paper on participation of Indigenous children and young people to improve health and wellbeing.  In this podcast, they talk to Sally Block about the paper and many other aspects of the health of young Indigenous peoples. Cultural safety is explored and described - as not another tick a box alongside fire training in an organisation - but an evolving commitment. Ms Dukasis is the CEO of The Koori Youth Council in Melbourne and we find out what they are doing for Indigenous young people.

"As with all things with the IRS, document, document, document." Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, explain what actually happens when you move an investment or retirement account from one custodian to another. The mechanics may seem as simple as filling out a form and waiting a few days. But Kevin walks through the fine print that trips up even seasoned advisors. Taxable accounts can usually move without triggering a sale, so cost basis and unrealized gains transfer intact. Retirement accounts are where the real danger lives. There are two ways to move retirement money: a trustee-to-trustee transfer, where the funds never touch your hands, and a 60-day rollover, where they briefly become yours. The second path can be a minefield because, if you miss the 60-day window by even a day, the money is reclassified as a taxable distribution. The only way back is IRS self-certification for a handful of approved hardships, or a costly private letter ruling. And if you mix up traditional and Roth buckets during a move, you risk an illegal conversion or double taxation. Beyond the rollover clock, Kevin brings up the mandatory 20% withholding on 401(k) distributions, and after-tax "basis" dollars that shouldn't be taxed twice. Then there's Form 5498, an easily discarded document that turns out to be essential for tracking IRA contributions and conversions for years to come. Needless to say, all of this can be overwhelming. Artists — if you take commissions, here's the number that should frighten you. Scope drift, the polite, gradual expansion of a commission beyond what you agreed, eats twenty to thirty per cent of the original fee in unpaid work on most commissions I see. That isn't a margin problem. That's your profit. Gone. On every job. And it isn't because you did bad work. It's because nobody taught you how to manage what happens after the deposit lands.
