Brian interviews Daniel Coleman. Daniel recently retired from being a professor in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University and an associate professor at Six Nations Polytechnic on the Grand River territory. He is a writer who is fascinated by the power of narrative arts to generate a sense of place and community, mindfulness, curiosity and wonder. Daniel Coleman talks about the Covenant Chain of Friendship and the Two-Row Wampum. These indigenous covenants of peace, friendship, and respect not only laid out a vision for nation-to-nation, political relationships, but also based these in a strong ecological commitment to peace, friendship, and respect with the more than human world as well. Given Good Friday and the Trump arguments to eliminate trade agreements threaten our sovereignty, understanding how indigenous people negotiated treaties and peace and then kept it, is interesting.

Grandfather of the Treaties: Finding our Future Through the Wampum Covenant (Wolsak & Wynn, 2025) by Daniel Coleman is an essential read for Canadians looking to understand our nation's complicated history. In this ambiance episode host Hollay Ghadery talks to Daniel as well as Indigenous artist, writer, and historian Rick Hill about wampum, early settler relations, and how we can use wampum agreements to move forward today. Grandfather of the Treaties shares Coleman's extensive study of Haudenosaunee wampum agreements with European nations, which was done in close consultation with many Indigenous scholars, shows how we can chart a new future for everyone living in what we now call Canada—Indigenous, settler, more recent arrival—by tracing wampum's long-employed, now-neglected past. The Covenant Chain-Two Row treaty tradition models how to develop good minds so that we can live peacefully together on the river of life that sustains us all. It is a philosophy, an ethical system, a way of learning to live as relatives with our human and more-than-human neighbours. This covenant has been called the “grandfather of the treaties,” and is also considered the grandmother of Canada's Constitution.

The one you feel best about is your 5-point answer, the one you're just guessing on is your 1-point answer. (For any rounds where the points don't work this way, we'll discuss that during the game.)If you feel certain that you know the answer to all three questions in a typical round, then instead of assigning points of 5, 3 and 1, you can go for 11 points. If you do that and you answer all three questions correctly, you get 11 points (instead of 9). However, if you do that and you miss just one question, you get a 0 for the round. The bonus round question has five possible answers. You get 3 points for every correct answer you submit. Like with going for 11 in typical rounds, though, you can choose to go for 20 in the bonus round (but doing so is risky in the same way that going for 11 in typical rounds is).Have questions about the game or how it works? We start Season 2 of The Intersection Podcast: Diverse Folx Converse with Special Guest, Dr. Daniel Coleman, “A Personal Liberation Journey of Relationships, Part 1: Black Queer / Trans Loving.” In this episode Dr. Daniel and I discuss how he laid the groundwork for his personal liberation journey, intergenerational loving, and how he sustained his personal liberation journey! We cover so many juicy topics in this episode such as intergenerational love, and Afro-diasporic spiritual and intersectional support of polyamory, and non-monogamous love as a way to de-center the toxic idea of "chemical" accidental romantic love that we see so often in white supremacist narratives or heteronormative or homonormative narratives. This podcast was so good, I had to split it into two parts! This first part focuses on intersectional Black queer / trans polyamory and non-monogamous love. The second part focuses on Black queer / trans recognition, embodiment, and agency! Dr. Daniel talks all about his personal liberation journey as a Black queer / trans person and we converse with my limited knowledge of polyamory and non-monogamy as someone who is more newly out as queer / gay. Dr. Daniel Coleman is Assistant Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at UNC-G, and a Community-Focused Artist / Scholar. This is a wonderful episode that I'm so pleased to host and present to all of you. It makes us question how subliminally we might be reenacting white supremacist, anti-Black, and heteronormative and homonormative patterns in the most intimate of situations and relationships. This episode is central to our September campaign: QUEER LOVE IS NOT JUST SEX To think about the social, political, personal, libratory, and agentive aspects of queer love. In our last podcast, we discussed the power of the placebo and nocebo in affecting the physiology of the body, which shows the power of belief.   This week we look at Dissociative Identity Disorder and how it is proving just how powerful the mind really is. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder, shows us the true power of the mind's ability to affect the body.  People with DID have at least two distinct personalities. That means that completely different people can occupy the very same physical body.  When one "takes over" from another, often a difference in personality is clearly seen by his or her loved ones, but not only personality changes are observed, physical changes as well. In my research, I discovered an interesting article written in the New York Times Science section by Daniel Coleman, published in June 1988, that sheds light on the ability of your mind to heal your body.  A summary of the article is this week's podcast.  It's been over 30 years since this article was written, I can't help but wonder why the medical establishment hasn't spent more time and funding in researching the mind/body connection and the power the mind clearly has to change the body's biology.

Our Modern Heritage: The Home & Family Culture Podcast

If you haven't seen the classic film The Karate Kid then you are seriously missing out, and your childhood was deprived! One of the things that makes that movie a classic is when Mr. Miyagi is supposed to be teaching Daniel La Russo how to do karate, he makes him do his house chores instead. He has him wax his cars, paint his fences, paint his house, and sand his deck. Daniel starts to get impatient with these tasks and starts to question whether is he ever going to learn anything about karate. In the iconic scene that follows, Daniel learns that he was not only learning karate by doing those tasks, he was building the strength and muscle memory to perform important blocking moves in karate. Our family culture is a lot like these routines that we create for our families. We won't suddenly have the ability to teach our values or cultivate our vision for our family when they are grown if we haven't done things to intentionally shape our beliefs and habits along the way. I have been thinking a lot about what it means to be goal-oriented. I don't think that it is something that you just wake up and decide to be. Setting and accomplishing goals takes discipline, perseverance, and self-efficacy. Plus, if you aren't thinking about your end vision, then the goal has very little meaning. Having that vision is challenging when your family is coasting, or always in crisis mode. That is something Michael and I have struggled with over the last ten years of feeling like we have been riding on the cultural train of corporate success, only to find that the tracks dead end if there is a recession, or you didn't get there "right" degree, or find the "right" job. To get back onto our own, self-made train, we have to start thinking hard about what our goals really are, and start developing those things that will carry us toward our vision. I recently read this talk called "The Adventure of Mortality" by Dieter F. Uchtdorf, and here is something that I appreciated about what he said about goals and decisions: "In many cases, the decisions you make may not be as important as what you do after making the decision." Mr. Miyagi knew from the beginning that the movements he was teaching had a purpose. As parents, we need to be intentional about the habits and rhythms we establish with our children because they will become permanent. In the book "Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence" by Daniel Coleman, he talks about the behaviors we do consistently without ever thinking about them. He says these things become "something we habituate to rather than orient towards." When we aren't intentional about our vision and values, the things we may not want become our defaults. We can intentionally design our defaults, or we can allow our situation to set them for us. Join the Family Success Toolkit Free Membership http://homeandfamilyculture.com

Inspiring Leaders: Leadership Stories with Impact

Every boss can be moody from time to time. Never before have our organizational leaders been put in a tougher spot, responsible for executing the decisions from above and then mobilizing their team to execute, even when that team is overloaded or unmotivated. Mood swings are par for the leadership course. So when does a Boss’s Moods become Intolerable? On this week’s episode, we expose the Moody Boss and what you can do to survive. A Boss’s moods become intolerable when they are unaware of their Moody behaviour, it doesn’t get managed. In other words, when your Boss has low EQ. EQ, or Emotional Intelligence is their emotional self awareness, self regulation, ability to read others and manage relationships. So it is really your Personal Competence and your Social Competence. It’s a concept that Daniel Coleman brought to us in his National Bestselling Book, “Emotional Intelligence”. Harvard School of Business Researchers tell us that, when driving performance, EQ is twice as important as Intelligence and Technical Ability, and at the most senior level of leaders, Emotional Intelligence accounted for 90% of the difference between the best, and the rest. So a moody boss’s lack of personal awareness leaves them vulnerable to mood swings that others see, but they don’t. And their team suffers the most. Here is the kicker - they can’t see the stress that they are inflicting on others and the demoralization that their team may be dealing with. 360 Assessment results get dismissed as under-appreciation for all their efforts and stress. They deflect and blame others to justify their moods. But a good Executive Coach will use a 360 Assessment to help a moody boss increase emotional awareness and regulation. So what can you do if you have to work for a moody boss? Here is a summary of our 10 Strategies to Survive a Moody Boss. For all the glorious details of each recommendation, tune into the show now! 1. Don’t Try To Change Your Boss 2. Be Aware 3. Watch For Patterns 4. Limit Your Interactions 5. Keep Cool and Carry On 6. Make Sure You’re Not To Blame 7. Document 8. Don’t Be A Trigger 9. Pick Your Moments 10. Talk To The Right People BONUS STRATEGY: As Dale Carnegie said, don’t criticize, condemn or complain about your boss. If these strategies don’t work, escalate to their Boss and/or HR. And if it is toxic and affects your health, explore changing departments or employers. No Intolerable Boss that is worth sacrificing your health. To get all the expanded details on each of these suggestions, tune into this episode today or reach out to us to discuss your situation personally. We’re here to help! What is it that makes us more likely to buy books about contemplation than to go to a silent retreat? Today's guest, Daniel Coleman, author of Presence and Process: A Path Towards Transformation, is talking with Tripp about meditation, contemplation, and spiritual practice in a pluralistic world. Given the spiritual trends in America - with the decline of those identifying as religious, and the rise of the mindfulness movement - how do we navigate the waters of spiritual practice? Daniel talks about how he began to grow dissatisfied with the traditional church experience and longed for a way to live a life of transformation, he experiences with Quaker spirituality - the silent, expectant, waiting worship in a group, which led to an interest in personal contemplative practice, and the differences between his charismatic experiences of God and his contemplative experiences. Plus, apophatic mysticism, concepts versus felt experience, the role of contemplation in the history of the church, the challenge of introducing Buddhism and Buddhist practice to a Western audience, the difference between salvation and enlightenment, the role that Process thought plays in connecting the contemplative traditions of the East and West, and tips for sticking with a new practice. This week's guest is Christian Castro, Co-Owner of Industry Finishes, a new company spinoff to flush out the already great logistical, office furniture & cubical supplies, facility services and IT Services provided by Reliant Group. Highlights From This Episode:  Christian Castro talks about the various businesses he has had and his journey as a serial entrepreneur. He ended up here in Seattle when he agreed to help one of his friends grow his fledgling IT business, which brought him from flipping houses and doing IT in Pheonix, AZ to Seattle. Castro talks about what shaped him to be willing to take more risks and put it all on the line to create something from scratch. His parents were from Mexico and migrated her in their late teens. His dad retired at age 64, after starting in agriculture at age 16. He started picking lettuce to buying his own tractor and eventually starting his own agriculture business. His mom financed Christian's first RadioShack computer and it's his parents investment in him and their determination to make it work and figuring out how to make it that has made Christian successful and persistent in squeezing the opportunities out of life's situations.   Along the way, what has been your biggest challenges? There is no such thing as an "overnight success". Make a plan but understand that you are going to have to change courses many times along your journey. Castro thinks it's true what they say about Thomas Edison... he found 100 ways on how to NOT make a lightbulb, before he was the first person to make the lightbulb. You will have many failures to get to your success. For Christian, both construction and computers have been passions for him and his challenge is focusing on just a couple opportunities at a time... there are just so many opportunities out there for everyone, the real struggle is just focusing on one at a time. At the end of day, if he was retired and could just do whatever he wanted, he would probably just focus on building houses. What is your biggest challenge now? Christian wants to make sure they have the right people on the bus and in the right seats on the bus (to use the "Good To Great" verbiage). Some people want perfection and want to retain 100% of their customers... Christian is actually of the reverse philosophy: You've got to let go of the worse 5% to make room for the better 10% so you can focus on quality growth. Though things are changing so rapidly with technology and business, it's still well worth the time and energy to develop out a 5 year plan. As Christian is getting older, he is really seeing the importance in investing his time in the things that are important to him and he wants to partner with the right people and not get stuck in a "bad business marriage". Scott (the owner of Reliant Group), says at the end of his regular meetings that, "I want you to go out today and fail somewhere", because that means the employees are making decisions and the only way one can learn is by making decisions. They empower the employees to be invested in the company by allowing them to be part of the decision making and not micro-managing.   What is your greatest strength? Being able to see an issue from many different perspectives but is able to assess it quickly to make a decision. What habit do you wish you had? Better and clearer timely execution of decisions. What boundaries have you setup to keep from being distracted by technology or other time suckers? Prioritizing opportunities - committing to particular opportunities and putting the blinders on to ignore the other opportunities so they can stay focused and keep quality high. What is the best advice you have ever received? Work hard now so you don't have to work hard later. Do you listen to podcasts? What are your favorites? Casey Neistat What is your one book recommendation for our listeners? "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Coleman or "Emotional Intelligence 2.0" by Travis Bradberry & Jean Greaves Parting Guidance - "We all think that we have time... but we don't" and this becomes truer and truer every day of our lives. They say everyday like its your last day because one day this will be true.
