The NYPD is not complying with a 4-year-old public disclosure law about surveillance technology. The Department of Investigation says the NYPD failed to follow the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology multiple times last year, including their introduction of the Times Square subway canine like robot known as Digidog. Also, the city is introducing more cooling centers this summer with deadly heat waves are on the rise. And in Nassau County, the police department has been fighting giving up it's phone directory for the past 4 years, despite multiple court orders. They've finally given up the closely guarded document and WNYC's Charles Lane has the details. And finally as the weather gets warmer, more people will be out on bikes. One non-profit organization helps blind, low-vision and disabled riders enjoy cycling on tandem bikes for free. Reporter Jeff Lunden joined the group for one of their rides.

New York has given out 165 licenses for recreational cannabis dispensaries since November and they've all gone to people with past marijuana convictions. But only 7 of those shops have opened state-wide so far. WNYC's health reporter Caroline Lewis explains why. Also, the NYPD showed off the DigiDog last week - a robot, sort of dog shaped, that they say will help NYPD and other first responders provide more effective policing across the city. Public safety reporter Samantha Max spoke with WNYC's Tiffany Hanssen about the NYPD and robots.

NYPD Robot Dog's Run Is Cut Short After Fierce Backlash When the New York Police Department acquired a robotic dog last year, officials heralded the four-legged device as a futuristic tool that could go places that were too dangerous to send officers. “This dog is going to save lives,” Inspector Frank Digiacomo of the department's Technical Assistance Response Unit said in a television interview in December. “It's going to protect people. It's going to protect officers.” Instead, the machine, which the police named Digidog, became a source of heated debate. After it was seen being deployed as part of the response to a home invasion in the Bronx in February, critics likened it to a dystopian surveillance drone. And when officers used it at a public-housing building in Manhattan this month, a backlash erupted again, with some people describing the device as emblematic of how overly aggressive the police can be when dealing with poor communities. Now, the robotic dog's days in the city have quietly been cut short. In response to a subpoena from City Councilman Ben Kallos and Council Speaker Corey Johnson requesting records related to the device, police officials said a contract worth roughly $94,000 to lease the robotic dog from its maker, Boston Dynamics, had been terminated April 22. John Miller, the Police Department's deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, confirmed late last month that the contract had been canceled and that the dog had been returned to Boston Dynamics or would be soon. In an interview, Miller said that the lease had been scheduled to end in August and that the police had planned to test the robotic dog's capabilities until then. The department changed its plans, he said, after the device became a “target” for people who he said had improperly used it to fuel arguments about race and surveillance. “People had figured out the catchphrases and the language to somehow make this evil,” Miller said. Kallos, a Democrat who represents the Upper East Side, took a different position, saying the device's presence in New York underscored what he called the “militarization of the police.” He said the robotic dogs resembled those featured in the 2017 “Metalhead” episode of the television show “Black Mirror.” “At a time where we should be having more beat cops on the street, building relationships with residents, they're actually headed in another direction in trying to replace them with robots,” he said. Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/5443820

This week, we mourn the death of the Digidog and descend into the greasy, fragrant world of robot-powered kitchens. Miso Robotics, the company responsible for Flippy, the burger-flipping robot, has launched a commercial service for restaurants that uses computer vision and AI to automatically identify and track ingredients, dishes and tasks. But would you pay more for robot-made food, or would you pay less? We start with the untimely demise of the Digidog, a version of the Boston Dynamics' four-legged Spot robot that was employed by the New York Police Department. The vehicle was “put down,” in the words of mayor De Blasio, after it turned out the NYPD couldn't actually use it because it failed to declare it as a surveillance device. The public opinion on the matter could have also played a part – it turned out the residents of New York weren't all that exited about the noisy, confusing machine participating in run-of-the-mill arrests. Another robot, Flippy – previously discussed in Episode 6 – is now part of an expanded service from Miso, called CookRight – enabling restaurants to “apply precision cooking to a variety of grilled food items on their menus.” The software comes with a self-installation kit that includes a user interface tablet, cameras, and a small computer. Miso president, Buck Jordan, says automation will keep the industry alive and stimulate growth – but we are not entirely convinced. We also cover: John Cheese! Working at Maccy D's! Technology correspondent Mark Pesce joins Kathryn to talk about how a software company offered employees a choice: stop complaining about the company's issues with diversity and inclusion - or take a buyout package. One third of the company has now left. The NYPD has cancelled its contract to operate Spot a robot dog due to public opposition to it. And 'disaster girl' has sold the original photo that turned her into a meme - it made half a million dollars as a non-fungible token (NFT).
Recorded 3rd May 2021 Jim and Simon and Nick get together again to meander around the news nd some other stuff - this is an extra long show because somehow we ended up with 4 hours of audio! Anyway with some of the more off topic and meandering bits removed its down to a “mere” just over 2 hours (oops sorry about that). Also after such a massive edit the effort of making the show notes quite as tidy as usual was too much to face! So sorry, but all the links should still work even if it isn't in the usual tidy format... Oh and I don't mention it on the show but we are now available on a bucket more services including Amazon Music - just ask Alexa to play Essential Apple Podcast on Amazon Music... (also a considerable amount of monkeying around with Audacity to get the damn file down to the size required by Pinecast - one failing of Audacity is it tends not to tell you there are updates..)
