Send us a textDr. Sui Huang, MD, PhD is a Professor at the Institute for Systems Biology ( ISB - https://isbscience.org/people/sui-huang-md-phd/?tab=biography ) where his lab is focused on studying how gene regulatory networks control gene activity to create stable cellular states, such as different cell types, and how these states transition into different lineages in both healthy and diseased conditions.Dr. Huang is a molecular and cell biologist with a strong background in theoretical biology and has devoted much of his research to understanding the very phenomenon of cancer from a complex systems perspective. Before joining the ISB in fall 2011, Dr. Huang held faculty positions at the University of Calgary (Institute of Biocomplexity and Informatics), where he helped establish biocomplexity as a discipline in research and teaching, and at Harvard Medical School (Children's Hospital) where he obtained first experimental evidence for the existence of high-dimensional attractors in mammalian gene regulatory networks.Dr. Huang grew up in Geneva and Zurich. He received his MD degree from the University of Zurich and obtained thereafter, as the first recipient of the PhD-Program-for-Physicians Award of the Swiss National Science Foundation, his PhD in molecular biology and physical chemistry for work on interferons. As a postdoctoral fellow at Children's Hospital Boston he investigated tumor angiogenesis and cell growth control. In that period he also studied dynamical systems through his affiliation with the New England Complex Systems Institute.Important Episode Link - "The end of the genetic paradigm of cancer" - PLOS Biologyhttps://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.3003052#SuiHuang #InstituteForSystemsBiology #Interferon #Angiogenesis #AttractorStates #Epigenetics #Cancer #Oncology #TumorMicroenvironment #DonaldIngber #ConradWaddington #Organogenesis #Morphogenesis #LeeHood #BeatriceMintz #ProgressPotentialAndPossibilities #IraPastor #Podcast #Podcaster #Podcasting #ViralPodcast #STEM #Innovation #Science #Technology #ResearchSupport the show

The energy is asking that we move through feeling, intuition, & compassion rather than logic. It is also a Master Month with the number 11 which represents the interconnection of the human experience and the divine.  March is a month for practicing patience, pacing yourself, reflecting, and gaining clarity on where you are at this point in your life, what your challenges are, and where your opportunities for growth may be. This month, continue to ask yourself: What is this teaching me? What am I learning?  Take notice of any and all experiences that trigger you, hurt you, or disrupt your energy and flow. Always remember that the people who ruffle your feathers are your greatest teachers! Moving a little bit slower may yield a higher quality output. As they say, “patience is a virtue!” Hesitate long enough for another solution to be revealed, as it may be exactly what you've been searching for.  As she shares personal stories about her mom's passing, Amanda talks about the portal between the human world and spiritual world, the unconditional human love experienced at the end of life, and how divine love reaches out to carry their soul on its journey. Remember that we are spiritual beings living the human experience. Look for the divine in your daily life and hold onto it tightly in order to be kinder, more compassionate, more patient, and most importantly, more loving every single day. In the last episode, Part 1, the conversation turned toward the ways theories bridge research and practice. In this episode, Part 2, Adam, Joe and Alfredo pick up the conversation by reflecting on the place of writing and reading in their own projects. We jump back in here with Adam who's reflecting on the audience of action research. Adam recently finished his dissertation and is thinking about his work outside of the context of PhD research. [03:03] Alfredo looks at how theorizing in some of his projects helps him appreciate the influence of storytelling and story-based knowledge outside of publishing research. [06:09] Joe situates the work of research and the role of theorizing in the contexts of procedural and declarative knowledge and begins making the case for the value of action research in generating procedural knowledge. [08:23] Alfredo agrees and, through reflecting on his experience editing journals and sharing more projects he's worked on, see this orientation toward procedural knowledge as an area of growth for action research: “Honoring people's expert knowledge, but turning it into a form that other people can see the expertise in it.” At this point, [13:33] Adam questions the role of the literature review in action research. [16:12] Alfredo makes the familiar case that literature reviews can be useful to action research projects, but argues that literature, and theories, should be at the service of the problems in “the real world,” and not the other way around. [20:04] Joe backs this up with his experiences doing action research with teachers in Peru. But… when do practitioners have time to do lit reviews? [23:50] Perhaps the controversial part of this episode, Joe and Alfredo explore division of labor, roles, and the suggestion that academics can provide a “knowledge service,” where “we come in, and help to document more of local practitioner knowledge, community knowledge literally as a service.” Wrapping up, [30:14] Alfredo insists that action research does really challenge dominant notions of research: “Research is working with people on the ground, hearing their stories, creating avenues for that processing, finding ways to turn them into creative visual form, turning stories into evidence… spending time with people.”If you are interested in Alfredo's work here are a few citations and links: Stringer, E. In this episode, Adam and Joe speak again with Adam's close friend, professor, and mentor, Dr Alfredo Ortiz Aragón, an Action-Researcher and Associate Professor in the PhD Program at the Dreeben School of Education at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, and co-author of Action Research (Fifth Edition) with Ernie Stringer. This episode explores the “what?” and “why?” of research in action research. Adam, Joe and Alfredo all went into their PhDs already working as practitioners and the conversation steers first toward the specific impact of their PhDs on their practice. Adam [7:15] thinks about the process and impact of his literature review on his work and Alfredo [9:20] reflects on how his PhD process opened his eyes to new ways of thinking about practice. Listen to Alfredo elaborate on the PhD as a period of discovering “meaningful methodology” and “amazing theories” (e.g., soft systems theory) that would energize his work and speak directly to frustrations he was having with “linear ways of thinking” in the field. The conversation turns toward the ways theories bridge research and practice. Joe [15:45] picks up on research's ability to help practitioners “draw the curtains back” and help us see things more clearly. But it's not “a one-way street,” since the practitioner-researcher contributes back to developing theories. Alfredo [18:15] offers some tough love by challenging doctoral students who might use theories uncritically to validate their work rather than engage with them dynamically as tools in tension with other theories in their projects. He gives us an example of how the dynamic tension between soft system theory and complexity theory enriched his own work: “Those two theories don't like each other, but I needed both of them to be able to explain how the things that I was doing were helping or not.” Here, Joe [21:05] echoes Alfredo's argument by drawing insights from an article he wrote “The Danger of a Single Theory” on his work with youth in a student voice project. To close Part 1 of this conversation, Adam [22:35] asks Alfredo if he is still working with theories from his dissertation. Alfredo uses his work in The Community Health and Wellbeing Project and The Breastfeeding Women Project to bring back into focus the role of stakeholders in action research: “Whether or not you're bringing in a formal theoretical framework or not, we are treating people's experiences as a source of knowledge and evidence, and trying to get them involved in doing so. That is only happening because I learned something about action research.”We have more to say, so join us in our next episode “Part 2 with Alfredo” where we dig into more of the “what and why” of research in action research. If you are interested in Joe's article or Aldredo's (with Ernie Stringer) book on Action Research, the citations are below: Levitan, J. A. S. (2018). In this Part 2 episode with Billie Groom we offer hope for adolescent and adult dogs who struggle with habitual behavior challenges.Erica Salvemini, host of The Rising Lioness Podcast welcomes back Billie Groom, animal welfare activist, social entrepreneur and Canine Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CCBT) expert.During this show Billie and Erica take a deeper dive into the inherent issues within the monolithic and unregulated pet industry. They ask difficult questions like, why is canine behavioral euthanasia and surrender so prevalent today? And, Why are behaviorally challenged dogs being euthanized enmasse instead of institutions opting for more conscious solutions to long-term rehabilitation?Erica asks the audience to use its voice for our Canine BFF's to create a grassroots movement to shift the industry towards rehabilitating our behaviorally challenged, misunderstood dogs, in place of surrender and euthanasia. CCBT is the conscious and compassionate solution to helping canines who are otherwise being destroyed en masse. This thought provoking conversation also addresses a current and rising movement toward implementing laws against backyard breeding and puppy mills selling pets in stores. Erica and Billie share candid views on the breeding, and industry which prioritizes money over the happiness and freedom of the animal. These canine industry experts offer another perspective and solutions for frustrated pet parents who hope to help their beloved 4 legged, furry family members. As a Master Reiki practitioner and pet care entrepreneur, Erica has been helping pets and their people for 2 decades. Through use of Reiki, a healing modality that has been around for nearly 4 millennia, we can offer transformational healing for our struggling canines. This holistic approach is still going strong today because of its simple, gentle and effective way in which it treats the patient, which explains why it's lasted for centuries. With decades of evidence, CCBT has been scientifically vetted as a proven methodology to help dogs who might otherwise be surrendered or worse, euthanized due to “behavioral challenges”.CCBT and Reiki combined would be a transformational powerhouse of healing for pets and their people too.If you're feeling despair over how to help your beloved behaviorally challenged adolescent or adult dogs, there is HOPE! Log on to learn about these highly effective and holistic approaches to rehabilitation. You can also contact animal welfare organizations, veterinarians, politicians and industry leaders at the local, state and national level and ask them to administer Canine Cognitive Behavior Therapy as a rehabilitation solution in place of surrender and euthanasia. We can all use our voice to help make a difference in saving canine lives today!Billie Groom is an award winning author, podcast host, animal welfare activist, and social entrepreneur. Her major fields of study are scientific labor markets, gender differences in employment outcomes, wage inequality, scientific entrepreneurship, children's educational attainments, and child abuse and neglect. In her role as the director of IPSR at Kansas she helps people get funded through different means. Her research also focuses on scientific entrepreneurship. Finally, Donna has has extensive experience applying for grants and serving in committees that award grants. She shares what she has learned from all of these experiences with us. Sebastian Tello-Trillo is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Economics at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy in the University of Virginia. Alex Hollingsworth is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Indiana University. Recommendations of the week: Donna recommends that if you are looking for a way to quickly re-charge your batteries, go out for a walk in "nature". Donna feels that going out to nature even for 15 minutes can help recharge energy and get the creative flow going. Her second recommendation is to track your time. Pick a given week or period of time for which you will track your time. Then check how much %s of your time you spend on each category of your job and adjust accordingly. Alex's recommendation of the week is to ask people for their successful grant applications. When he started this process, Alex didn't know where to start. Seeing a friend's application was very helpful in understanding format, and narrative of how an application looks. Sebastian's recommendation of the week is to apply for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. This fellowship provides you with financial support and importantly it can relief you from teaching assistant duties during your PhD Program, which can be very helpful. You can apply for this fellowship while applying for graduate school or in your first year of graduate school. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hidden-curriculum/message
