Happy Easter/Sunday! This week we were privileged to speak with Jade Presley the author of the newly released The Never List! It was so much fun and we hope you enjoy it! A little about Jade Presley : Jade Presley is a pen name I created to write romantasy stories that pair rich world building with characters that will make you blush and leave you thirsting for more. When not writing, I'm going on epic quests during game night or hanging with my family and Irish Wolfhound in my mountain home. Don't forget you can find all of our socials here!!
In a band full of dog guys, this week's guest Chris Guglielmo of Bayside says he's the most obsessive of his bandmates when it comes to hanging with studio and venue dogs. Chris joins the show to tell us all about Enzo, a 3 year old Irish Wolfhound look-a-like who doesn't have an ounce of the breed in his DNA (he's a Pit, GSD, Belgian Malonois, Rottweiler mix) and his 12 year old terrier mix Maisie (aka Mu-Tang). We also pay our respects to his Cairn terrier Marty which led us to a helpful discussion around end of life care. Great talk with a good-hearted dog dad. Bayside will be heading to the U.K. in February 2025 for The Errors Tour: 25 Years of Bayside. For tickets and more info go to baysidebayside.com Chris gave this week's shout out to Blue Man Dog, a volunteer-base rescue in Los Angeles, who rescue dogs most in need of their training team - those with behavioral issues - as well as dogs with medical issues and seniors. Liver shunts (technically called portosystemic shunts) are not that common in dogs, but if you are an aficionado of certain breeds or if your dog develops liver disease, you may find yourself in desperate need of information. Read on to learn all about liver shunts in dogs. What Is a Liver Shunt? First, we need to review some canine anatomy and physiology. A network of veins (called the portal system) drains blood away from the digestive tract. This blood carries nutrients, hormones, and waste material and is supposed to enter the liver before it travels to the rest of the body. The liver takes what it needs to function properly and also detoxifies the blood before sending it onward. A shunt is defined as a passage “that allows the flow of materials between two structures that are not usually connected.” A portosystemic shunt is, specifically, an abnormal blood vessel (or vessels) that connects the “portal” system draining the digestive tract to the “systemic” circulatory system feeding the rest of the body, thereby bypassing the liver. Causes of Liver Shunts in Dogs Liver shunts can be divided into two categories: those that are present at birth (congenital shunts) and those that develop later in life (acquired shunts). Congenital shunts are most common, being responsible for approximately 80 percent of cases. Dogs are usually quite young (less than 3 years old) when they start experiencing symptoms. A genetic cause is known for some breeds and suspected in others. Breeds at higher than average risk for congenital liver shunts include the Yorkshire Terrier, Dachshund, Maltese, Miniature Schnauzer, Lhasa Apso, Bichon Frise, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Toy and Miniature Poodle, Pekingese, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Irish Wolfhound, Old English Sheepdog, Samoyed, Irish Setter, Labrador Retriever, Doberman Pinscher, Golden Retriever, and German Shepherd. Acquired shunts typically develop when blood pressure within the veins connecting the digestive tract to the liver becomes elevated—most often because of diseases that cause liver scarring (cirrhosis). Dogs with acquired liver shunts tend to experience symptoms when they are older in comparison to those diagnosed with congenital shunts. Symptoms of Liver Shunts in Dogs Dogs with liver shunts generally have some combination of the following symptoms: Poor growth (congenital shunts) Poor appetite and/or eating unusual things Weight loss Increased thirst and urination Difficulty urinating or blood in the urine due to the formation of bladder stones Vomiting, which may contain blood Diarrhea, which may contain blood Behavioral changes like mental dullness, staring vacantly, poor vision, unsteadiness, circling, and head pressing Diagnosing Liver Shunts in Dogs These symptoms are obviously not unique to liver shunts. A veterinarian will start the diagnostic process by taking a complete health history, performing a physical examination, and running some basic tests such as blood work and a urinalysis. If he or she thinks that a liver shunt is likely, additional testing will be necessary to reach a definitive diagnosis. Possibilities include bile acid tests, blood ammonia levels, abdominal X-rays, abdominal ultrasound, and advanced imaging studies. Your veterinarian can discuss the pros and cons of each test with you based on the specifics of your dog's case. Treatment for Liver Shunts in Dogs The type of liver shunt that a dog has and their age and overall condition determines what type of treatment is best. Most small breed dogs who have congenital shunts have just one abnormal blood vessel that is located outside of the liver. These are the most amenable to surgical correction. A single shunt that is located within the liver itself is more common in large breed dogs. These are still usually best treated with surgery, but the procedure is a little more difficult. Dogs with acquired shunts tend to have multiple, abnormal vessels and may be poorer candidates for surgery due to their underlying illness. Surgery for liver shunts centers on blocking the flow of blood through the abnormal vessels so that more of it travels through the liver. This can involve the application of devices specifically designed to do this (e.g., ameroid constrictors or cellophane bands) or tying off the vessels with suture material. Oftentimes, the abnormal vessels cannot be completely blocked off all at once without the dog developing serious side effects like intestinal damage. Ameroid constrictors and cellophane bands are designed to get around this problem since they cause the vessel to narrow over time, which gives the body a chance to adjust. Medical management for liver shunts can be used to improve a dog's condition prior to surgery, when surgery is not in a dog's best interests, or when surgery is unable to entirely correct the problem. Veterinarians typically prescribe a diet that has just enough protein for the dog but no “extra,” which reduces the byproducts of protein digestion (e.g., ammonia) that can make a dog's symptoms worse. Research indicates that soy protein may be a better option in comparison to meat-based sources of protein. Feeding several smaller meals throughout the day is also beneficial. Medications also play an important role in the medical management of liver shunts. Antibiotics are prescribed to reduce the number of bacteria in the gut, and enemas can be given to physically remove feces and bacteria from the colon. Oral lactulose, a type of indigestible sugar, is used to encourage rapid transit of stool through the intestinal tract and to lower the pH within the gut, which reduces the absorption of ammonia. Prognosis for Liver Shunts in Dogs Approximately one-third of dogs with liver shunts can be successfully managed with dietary changes and medications, according to Dr. Karen Tobias, professor of small animal soft tissue surgery and a board-certified surgeon at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Dogs who have liver shunts that are located outside of the liver and that are surgically corrected using ameroid constrictors or cellophane bands have the best prognosis, with around 85 percent being clinically normal several months after surgery, according to Tobias. In comparison, dogs with shunts that are located within the liver have a greater risk of complications although many still do very well after surgery.

In this episode, we explore the indispensable Sighthounds. The sleek, swift, and beloved desert hunters and guardians of antiquity. The story of Sighthounds is the story of the oldest known domesticated dogs. Many of the breeds cherished today pre-date recorded history. Their loyalty, speed, and ability to spot and catch prey over long distances in the cruelest of conditions made them essential assets to pharaohs, kings, and nomads alike. Sighthounds were so revered that statues, murals, and golden relics were created in their honor. As a final testament to their merit, Sighthounds have been discovered, mummified, and laid to rest in family tombs. Bonafide Bits: The Azawakh's unique lean, durable physique inspired a Formula 1 engineer. An ancient leather dog collar was discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb. Pharaoh Hounds are known to blush, and even smile. In addition to being the world's fastest dog, Greyhounds have a 270-degree range of vision. Canine champions of AKC's Fast CAT Invitationals have reached speeds of 35-45 mph. Featured Breeds: Azawakh Tall and elegant, the Azawakh is a West African sighthound that originates from the countries of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The Azawakh has a short, fine coat that may come in any color or color combinations: red, clear sand to fawn, brindled, parti-color (which may be predominantly white), blue, black, and brown. The head may have a black mask and there may be white markings on the legs, bib, and at the tip of the tail. There are no color or marking disqualifications in the breed. Befitting its heritage, the Azawakh excels as a companion, guardian, and lure courser in the United States. Discover more about Azawakhs at AKC's Azawakh Breed Biography. Saluki Among the world's oldest breeds, the slim but rugged Saluki was the hunting hound of kings for thousands of years. Salukis are swift and agile sprinters who love a good chase. They make gentle, dignified, and independent but loyal pets. Discover more about Salukis at AKC's Saluki Breed Biography. Sloughi The Sloughi (SLOO-ghee) is a classically constructed sighthound of ancient lineage, originally bred to work on such game as hare, fox, jackal, gazelle, and wild pigs on the punishing terrain of its homeland. This is a lean, no-frills hound standing between 24 to 29 inches at the shoulder. Coat colors include shades of light sand to mahogany red-fawn, with or without brindling, with or without black markings, with no invasive white markings. The Sloughi's big, dark eyes are often described as “melancholy.” Discover more about Sloughis at AKC's Sloughi Breed Biography. Pharaoh Hound Pharaohs are sleek, aerodynamic coursing hounds bred for high-speed pursuit on rocky terrain. Among their several distinguishing traits are a tight tan coat with matching leather on the nose, ears, and eye rims; ravishing amber eyes; a white-tipped tail; the ability to smile; and a unique way of blushing when happy or excited (“His face glows like a god,” wrote an admirer some 3,000 years ago). These elegant visitors from antiquity possess the speed and graceful movement of all coursers descended from Bronze Age hounds. Discover more about Pharaoh Hounds at AKC's Pharaoh Hound Breed Biography. Basenji The Basenji, Africa's “Barkless Dog,” is a compact, sweet-faced hunter of intelligence and poise. They are unique and beguiling pets, best for owners who can meet their exercise needs and the challenge of training this catlike canine. Basenjis are small, graceful hounds standing 16 or 17 inches at the shoulder. They are recognizable by their glistening short coat, tightly curled tail, wrinkled forehead, and expressive almond-shaped eyes that convey a variety of subtle, humanlike emotions. Basenjis are a lovely sight at a standstill but more impressive yet at a fast trot when they exhibit the long, smooth strides of a mini-racehorse. And yes, it's true, they don't bark, but they make their feelings known with an odd sound described as something between a chortle and a yodel. Basenjis are fastidious and will groom themselves like cats. This has been called a “cult breed,”¿small in numbers, but those lucky enough to own one do so with singular devotion. Discover more about Basenjis at AKC's Basenji Breed Biography. Maltese The tiny Maltese, “Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta,” has been sitting in the lap of luxury since the Bible was a work in progress. Famous for their show-stopping, floor-length coat, Maltese are playful, charming, and adaptable toy companions. Discover more about Malteses at AKC's Maltese Breed Biography. Ibizan Hound The Ibizan Hound is a lithe and leggy visitor from the dawn of civilization, bred as a rabbit courser on the rocky shores of Spain's Balearic Islands. World-class sprinters and leapers, Ibizans need ample space to air out their engines. Ibizans are lithe and leggy visitors from the dawn of civilization. Art history students will recognize the elongated head, with its large erect ears, as a familiar motif of ancient Egypt. The elegant, racy body stands 22.5 to 27.5 inches at the shoulder, with coat colors of solid red or white, or red and white patterns. The rosy-colored leathers of the nose, eye rims, and lips, along with amber or caramel eyes, perfectly complement the coat. The breed's quiet grace is often described as deer-like. Discover more about Ibizan Hounds at AKC's Ibizan Hound Breed Biography. Greyhound Greyhounds are the essence of the dog breeder's credo “Form follows function.” From the narrow, aerodynamic skull to the shock-absorbing pads of the feet, Greyhounds are perfectly constructed for high-speed pursuit. The lean beauty of the Greyhound's “inverted S” shape, created by the deep chest curving gently into a tightly tucked waist, has been an object of fascination for artists, poets, and kings for as long as human beings have called themselves civilized. Greyhounds are the template from which other coursing hounds have been struck. Discover more about Greyhounds at AKC's Greyhound Breed Biography. Irish Wolfhound The calm, dignified, and kindly Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all AKC breeds. Once fearless big-game hunters capable of dispatching a wolf in single combat, Wolfhounds today are the most serene and agreeable of companions. Discover more about Irish Wolfhounds at AKC's Irish Wolfhound Breed Biography. Whippet At somewhere between 18 and 22 inches at the shoulder, the Whippet looks like a Greyhound, but smaller. The Whippet exhibits the classic “inverted S” lines of the sighthound. The deep chest and trim waist; a lean head supported by a long, arched neck; and slim but sturdy legs combine in a picture of an agile, fleet-footed athlete. Between bursts of intense pursuit, Whippets love to stretch out and relax for long hours, enjoying the role of a loving, and loved, companion. Whippets like a fenced yard to run in, but they do nicely in cozy apartments too, as long as they are exercised properly. Another plus for city dwellers: Whippets rarely bark. Despite the breed's elegant looks, the Whippet is a robust, low-maintenance dog. Discover more about Whippets at AKC's Whippet Breed Biography. Thai Ridgeback The Thai Ridgeback is a muscular, medium-sized dog with a streamlined body that makes him very agile and a natural athlete. The ridge on his back is formed by hair growing in the opposite direction from the rest of his coat and the breed has up to 8 different ridge patterns. Puppies can be born without this ridge. Coat colors include solid blue, black, red, or fawn with a black mask occasionally on the red-coated dogs. Thai Ridgebacks also have spotted tongues and some even come with solid black/blue tongues. Today, most Ridgebacks are companion dogs, but they still maintain many of the same instincts for the jobs for which they were bred: hunting and guarding. They had to be independent and self-sufficient and hunt for their own food, which gave them strong survival instincts, a high prey drive, and a high level of intelligence. If well-bred and properly socialized, the Thai Ridgeback can be a loyal, loving pet. As a guarding breed, they are naturally protective of their home and can be reserved and suspicious of strangers. Thai Ridgebacks will need a patient, consistent, and experienced owner with a good understanding of dog behavior; they are not for first-time dog owners. Discover more about Thai Ridgebacks at AKC's Thai Ridgeback Breed Biography. Borzoi Borzoi are large, elegant sighthounds. A mature male stands at least 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs 75 to 105 pounds. Females will be smaller. Beneath the luxurious silky coat, Borzoi construction follows the ancient Greyhound template. Once known as the Russian Wolfhound, Borzoi were bred to be swift and tough enough to pursue and pin their ferocious lupine quarry. In their quiet, catlike way they can be stubborn, and training is best accomplished with patience, consistency, and good humor. Affectionate family dogs, Borzoi are nonetheless a bit too dignified to wholeheartedly enjoy a lot of roughhousing. The sight of a cat or squirrel on the run will quickly stir their instinct to pursue and fenced-in running room is a must. Discover more about Borzois at AKC's Borzoi Breed Biography. For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org. Shareables: The fleet-footed whippet has been dubbed a poor man's racehorse. There's evidence that the Greeks not only developed collars but created spiked collars, to protect the necks of their hounds from a predator's bite Tesem is an ancient Egyptian catch-all term meaning hunting dog.
Tonight we conclude our story:The Adventure of the Creeping Man, by Arthur Conan DoyleIn the story, the brilliant consulting detective Sherlock Holmes is approached for help by a young man called Jack Bennett from the university town of Camford. Bennett is concerned about his employer and future father-in-law Professor Presbury. The professor's personality and behavior have suddenly changed. Bennett fears that Professor Presbury could become dangerous, as does the professor's daughter Edith. The changes in the professor's character have coincided with his dog, an Irish Wolfhound named Roy, taking a sudden violent dislike towards him. While Bennett is discussing the case with Holmes, Edith arrives. She says that she saw her father's face at her bedroom window the previous night. This is in spite of the fact that her bedroom is three floors up and cannot easily be accessed from the outside of the house.Support the showSend your story suggestions to bigvoicejay@gmail.com.

In this episode, we dig deep into the depths of dog lore to separate fact from fiction. If humans understood all the wags of a dog's tail there might not be so many misconceptions about what they prefer to eat, whether or not they want that giant hug, or if they really play poker. But, the better we get to know our favorite dogs, the more myths we're able to bust. More importantly, the better humans understand their dog's needs, signals, and communication, the stronger the bond between us becomes. Bonafide Bits Great Danes are actually German, not Danish. In 2023, Bobi, a Rafeiro do Alentejo in Portugal, was verified to be the world's oldest dog at 30 years old. You really can teach old dogs new tricks, as expertly demonstrated by 95 Border Collies at the Clever Dog Lab in Austria. Dogs can see color, but are more likely to see blue and yellow toys than popular red or orange toys. Plants in the Allium family, particulary onions, are toxic to all dog breeds but more toxic to Japanese breeds such as Akitas and Shiba Inus. Featured Breeds: Bernese Mountain Dog Big, powerful, and built for hard work, the Bernese Mountain Dog is also strikingly beautiful and blessed with a sweet, affectionate nature. Berners are generally placid but are always up for a romp with the owner, whom they live to please. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, sturdy worker who can stand over 27 inches at the shoulder. The thick, silky, and moderately long coat is tricolored: jet black, clear white, and rust. The distinctive markings on the coat and face are breed hallmarks and, combined with the intelligent gleam in the dark eyes, add to the Berner's aura of majestic nobility. A hardy dog who thrives in cold weather, the Berner's brain and brawn helped him multitask on the farms and pastures of Switzerland. Berners get along with the entire family and are particularly gentle with children, but they will often become more attached to one lucky human. Berners are imposing but not threatening, and they maintain an aloof dignity with strangers. Discover more about Bernese Mountain Dogs at AKC's Bernese Mountain Dog Breed Biography. Chihuahua The Chihuahua is a balanced, graceful dog of terrier-like demeanor, weighing no more than six pounds. The rounded “apple” head is a breed hallmark. The erect ears and full, luminous eyes are acutely expressive. Coats come in many colors and patterns and can be long or short. The varieties are identical except for the coat. Chihuahuas possess loyalty, charm, and a big-dog attitude. Even tiny dogs require training, and without it, this clever scamp will rule your household like a little Napoleon. Compact and confident, Chihuahuas are ideal city pets. They are too small for roughhousing with kids, and special care must be taken in cold weather, but Chihuahuas are adaptable as long as they get lots of quality time in their preferred lap. Discover more about Chihuahuas at AKC's Chihuahua Breed Biography. Chinese Crested With their spotted pink skin, spiky “crested” hairdo, furry socks, and feathery tail, you can't mistake the sweet and slender Chinese Crested for any other breed. This frolicsome, ultra-affectionate companion dog is truly a breed apart. The Chinese Crested, a lively and alert toy breed standing between 11 and 13 inches high, can be hairless or coated. The hairless variety has smooth, soft skin and tufts of hair on the head, tail, and ankles. The coated variety, called the “powderpuff,” is covered by a soft, silky coat. Besides the coat, there's very little difference between the powderpuff and his undressed brother. Both varieties are characterized by fine-boned elegance and graceful movement. Cresteds are as fun as they look: playful, loving, and devoted to their humans. The hairless has its advantages: there is no doggy odor, and for obvious reasons shedding isn't much of a problem. Both varieties are attentive housemates, totally in tune with their family. Discover more about Chinese Crested at AKC's Chinese Crested Breed Biography. Great Dane The easygoing Great Dane, the mighty “Apollo of Dogs,” is a total joy to live with — but owning a dog of such imposing size, weight, and strength is a commitment not to be entered into lightly. This breed is indeed great, but not a Dane. Discover more about Great Danes at AKC's Great Dane Breed Biography. Rafeiro do Alentejo The Rafeiro do Alentejo is an excellent farm and estate watchdog. He is also a very useful livestock protector, being more vigilant at night and very serious when guarding territory or any other property entrusted to him. He has a calm and confident expression. Since the beginning of the breed's history, Rafeiros Alentejanos were used in packs as hunting dogs for big game, though this function has gradually disappeared over time. More recently, the breed is a guard dog for property and livestock, watching sheep and cattle. They also often work alone in prairies and will defend the herd against any intruders. Hailing from Portugal, the Rafeiro do Alentejo is a large-sized dog, powerful, rustic, sober, and calm. He moves with a heavy, slow roll. His coat is short or medium-length and thick, straight, and dense. They can be black, wolf gray, or fawn, with or without brindling, always with white markings; or white with patches of these colors. Discover more about Rafeiro do Alentejo at AKC's Rafeiro do Alentejo Breed Biography. Akita Akitas are burly, heavy-boned spitz-type dogs of imposing stature. Standing 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder, Akitas have a dense coat that comes in several colors, including white. The head is broad and massive and is balanced in the rear by a full, curled-over tail. The erect ears and dark, shining eyes contribute to an expression of alertness, a hallmark of the breed. Akitas are quiet, fastidious dogs. Wary of strangers and often intolerant of other animals, Akitas will gladly share their silly, affectionate side with family and friends. They thrive on human companionship. The large, independent-thinking Akita is hardwired for protecting those they love. They must be well-socialized from birth with people and other dogs. Discover more about Akitas at AKC's Akita Breed Biography. Shiba Inu An ancient Japanese breed, the Shiba Inu is a little but well-muscled dog once employed as a hunter. Today, the spirited, good-natured Shiba is the most popular companion dog in Japan. The adaptable Shiba is at home in town or country. Brought to America from Japan as recently as 60 years ago, Shibas are growing in popularity in the West and are already the most popular breed in their homeland. Their white markings combined with their coloring (red, red sesame, or black and tan) and their alert expression and smooth stride make them almost foxlike. They're sturdy, muscular dogs with a bold, confident personality to match. Discover more about Shiba Inus at AKC's Shiba Inu Breed Biography. German Shepherd Dog There are many reasons why German Shepherd Dogs stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but experts say their defining attribute is character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. German Shepherd Dogs will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but, the breed standard says, there's a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.” Discover more about German Shepherd Dogs at AKC's German Shepherd Dog Breed Biography. Siberian Husky The graceful, medium-sized Siberian Husky's almond-shaped eyes can be either brown or blue and sometimes one of each, and convey a keen but amiable, and even mischievous expression. Quick and nimble-footed, Siberians are known for their powerful but seemingly effortless gait. Tipping the scales at no more than 60 pounds, they are noticeably smaller and lighter than their burly cousin, the Alaskan Malamute. As born pack dogs, they enjoy family life and get on well with other dogs. The Sibes' innate friendliness renders them indifferent watchdogs. These are energetic dogs who can't resist chasing small animals, so secure room to run is a must. An attractive feature of the breed: Sibes are naturally clean, with little doggy odor. Discover more about Siberian Huskies at AKC's Siberian Husky Breed Biography. Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever, an exuberant Scottish gundog of great beauty, stands among America's most popular dog breeds. They are serious workers at hunting and fieldwork, as guides for the blind, and in search-and-rescue, enjoy obedience and other competitive events, and have an endearing love of life when not at work. Discover more about Golden Retrievers at AKC's Golden Retriever Breed Biography. Labrador Retriever The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America's most popular dog breed. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog. Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike. But don't mistake his easy-going personality for low energy: The Lab is an enthusiastic athlete that requires lots of exercise like swimming and marathon games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit. Discover more about Labrador Retrievers at AKC's Labrador Retriever Breed Biography. English Springer Spaniel The English Springer Spaniel is a sweet-faced, lovable bird dog of great energy, stamina, and brains. Sport hunters cherish the duality of working Springers: handsome, mannerly pets during the week, and trusty hunting buddies on weekends. Discover more about English Springer Spaniels at AKC's English Springer Spaniel Breed Biography. Otterhound Big, boisterous, and affectionate, the Otterhound was bred in medieval England for the now-outlawed activity of otter hunting. This scarce breed is known for its dense shaggy coat, webbed feet, an acute sense of smell, and affinity for swimming. Discover more about Otterhounds at AKC's Otterhound Breed Biography. Portuguese Water Dog The bright and biddable Portuguese Water Dog was bred to be an all-around fisherman's helper. The robust, medium-sized body is covered by a coat of tight, low-shedding curls. They are eager and athletic companions built for water work. Discover more about Portuguese Water Dogs at AKC's Portuguese Water Dog Breed Biography. Chesapeake Bay Retriever The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, peerless duck dog of the Mid-Atlantic, is an American original who embodies the classic traits of a good retriever: loyal, upbeat, affectionate, and tireless. The Chessie is famous for his waterproof coat. Chessies are strong, powerfully built gundogs standing anywhere from 21 to 26 inches at the shoulder. A male can weigh up to 80 pounds. The distinctive breed trait is a wavy coat that is oily to the touch. Chessies are solid-colored, either chocolatey brown, sedge, or deadgrass, with keen yellow-amber eyes that nicely complement the coat. Chessies are more emotionally complex than the usual gundog. Chessies take to training, but they have a mind of their own and can tenaciously pursue their own path. They are protective of their humans and polite, but not overtly friendly to strangers. Chessies make excellent watchdogs and are versatile athletes. A well-socialized Chessie is a confident companion and world-class hunting buddy. Discover more about Chesapeake Bay Retrievers at AKC's Chesapeake Bay Retriever Breed Biography. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever The smallest of the AKC's retrievers, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is intelligent, affectionate, and eager to please. Play fetch with a tireless Toller until your right arm falls off, and he will ask you to throw left-handed. The little gundog with the big name is the smallest AKC retriever, standing ideally 18 or 19 inches at the shoulder. The Toller's trademark is a coat of stunning crimson, ranging from golden red to a dark coppery color, with white markings. Strong and agile, Tollers are medium dogs: medium in size, bone, and coat length. The almond-shaped eyes project an alert expression. Tollers are upbeat athletes who require outlets for their boundless vigor: hunting, hiking, camping, and, of course, swimming (for which they are ideally suited, down to their webbed feet). Tollers are smart, handsome, affectionate companions, but these red tornadoes can be recommended only to those with enough time and energy to keep them usefully occupied. Discover more about Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever at AKC's Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Breed Biography. Dachshund The famously long, low silhouette, ever-alert expression, and bold, vivacious personality of the Dachshund have made him a superstar of the canine kingdom. Dachshunds come in two sizes and in three coat types of various colors and patterns. The word “icon” is terribly overworked, but the Dachshund, with his unmistakable long-backed body, little legs, and big personality, is truly an icon of purebred dogdom. Dachshunds can be standard-sized (usually 16 to 32 pounds) or miniature (11 pounds or under), and come in one of three coat types: smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired. Dachshunds aren't built for distance running, leaping, or strenuous swimming, but otherwise, these tireless hounds are game for anything. Smart and vigilant, with a big-dog bark, they make fine watchdogs. Bred to be an independent hunter of dangerous prey, they can be brave to the point of rashness, and a bit stubborn, but their endearing nature and unique look have won millions of hearts the world over. Discover more about Dachshunds at AKC's Dachshund Breed Biography. Pembroke Welsh Corgi Among the most agreeable of all small house dogs, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a strong, athletic, and lively little herder who is affectionate and companionable without being needy. They are one of the world's most popular herding breeds. Discover more about Pembroke Welsh Corgis at AKC's Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breed Biography. Basset Hound The Basset Hound stands no higher than 14 inches at the shoulder but, with his remarkably heavy bone, powerful little legs, and massive paws, he possesses big-dog strength and stamina. Bassets are famous for a large, domed head that features extremely long, velvety ears, mournful eyes, and a wrinkled brow, which give the breed the look of a sad clown. Built more for endurance than speed, the Basset moves in a deliberate but effortless manner. The breed's scenting ability is uncanny; it's said that among dogs only the Bloodhound's nose is more accurate. Mild and agreeable at home, the Basset is stubborn on the trail and barks in a loud, ringing voice. Although they may not be wildly demonstrative in their affections, they are steadfastly loyal. Discover more about Basset Hounds at AKC's Basset Hound Breed Biography. For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org. Shareables Dogs are not color blind, they just see colors differently from humans. Blue and yellow toys stand out more than other colors. Used as scent atomizers, the sweat glands on a dog's skin are not used for evaporation or cooling. A dog's wagging tail is an effective communication tool, as long as you don't come in at the tail end of the conversation.

"In Their Honor We Must Continue Their Paths" Tomorrow is All Saints' day… It's also Dia De Los Muertos … So I believe it is fitting to hold up our friends and loved ones today on All Hallows Eve….. Our tribe has lost legends, and legends in the making, just in the last few weeks, never mind during the course of the last couple years. The days are shorter, colder and grayer today. The mottled leaves are falling. The dry grass is wilting. The winds of change heralding the season have arrived to scurry and swirl the fallen leaves in our path. The fog is settling in, the sun tilting on its axis. It feels as if the world is dying around us as the fall equinox wanes and the winter solstice creeps ever closer. When we lose friends and family this time of year, the anguish seems to seep deeper into our bones than at any other time. Nonetheless, within our dog community, we are all, at the core, performers. The show must go on. No matter how devastated. How shattered. How destroyed our souls. So, we push through and push away and push down the heartache and angst and horror and sadness. Even as we collapse, crushed, with a dog on our chests to get through the night. “Thinking of you and all the amazing people brought into your life through the dogs. Does not make their passing any less sad, but oh how it has enriched your life.” This small note brought me such comfort. And I wanted to share this bright spot with all of you who are hurting right now. Our lives are all immeasurably enriched by our community of fellow dog lovers. Whether you started yesterday or have spent 50 years in this sport, the camaraderie and shared love of dogs is literally a lifeline for many. The litany of those gone in the last few years is nearly unbearable. Respected judges. Gifted breeders. Talented handlers. Beloved family. Bastions of passion and commitment to purebred dogs who are so nearly irreplaceable. Joe Gregory Barbara Alderman Pat Laurans Pat Hastings Linda Souza Jerry Moon Jamie Donelson So very many more near and far, bright stars each within their own universes. The smiles and voices that will forever stay with us. I will never forget literally sitting at Jerry Moon's knee while he taught me how to trim Cockers properly so I could show an ASCOB dog for a new client. Or the time Jerry went down at the old Brush Prairie show site during the Cocker specialty. He had won the variety with his beloved Fosse and would not leave in the ambulance until he was assured I would take Fosse back in for the breed. We won that day under Dale Simmons and against Don Rodgers with the ASCOB dog. That they are all gone now is hard to navigate in my mind. Working with Pat Laurans on the GWPCA board. Even before then, picking her brain about old dogs and pedigrees. There was literally nothing Pat couldn't accomplish if she put her mind to it. She left her mark on Take the Lead, the AKC Reunite Pet Disaster Relief Trailers, the Parent Club Committee for the Delegates and so much more. She was a fierce advocate for our breed and a good friend to me over the years. Just this spring I spent months working with Pat Hastings, Chris Levy & Nancy Martin on a presentation to vet students at OSU when they were invited to a local dog show. She was such an inspiration to me, not just in her knowledge, but her skill at wielding it to such dramatic effect. Linda Souza's support and kindness to me as an Irish Wolfhound handler back in the day… in a breed where professional handlers are not the norm … was such a gift to my young self. Barbara Alderman's kilowatt smile and the mind-bending opportunity to join her for dinner as a fellow judge. Joe Gregory's dance moves. Talking Spinone with Gloria Geringer and Wirehairs with Roger Hartinger. Watching from afar as Jamie Donelson beautifully showed a dog we raised here. These are memories stored carefully away in the heart. I've talked often about our tribe. The people who

Vic was a twenty-year veteran of the New York City Police Department. A Bronx resident for over 40 years, he now splits his time between sunny Florida and his timeshare in North Korea. He's also no stranger to international football, having played with Tamworth Phoenix, Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, and now with the Edinburgh Wolves who are currently pushing for a playoff spot. Alex gives insight to how international football can be beneficial, even when things don't go to plan. Last but certainly not least; Andy Dennehy (current OC for the Irish Wolfhounds, current coach for UCD, former quarterback and coach for the Dublin Rebels, 9-time Shamrock bowl winner; Rebels & UCD); and Michael Sykes (Irish Wolfhound and one of the top DBs in AFI for many a year; UCD), have played on opposing sides of the same pitch a number of times over the years. This Sunday 3rd of July, they'll meet again in the Tulip Bowl – the National American Football Championship in the Netherlands. Andy; OC of the Amsterdam Crusaders; will look to overcome the Rotterdam 010 Trojans. Michael; current DB on the 010 Trojans D; hopes to thwart that plan. And of course, we ask each of our guests a few questions about The Domestic Game! The Tulip Bowl will be livestreamed and the link is available here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CfZLJzoDKZl/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link With special thanks to Matty O'Meara, Alex Kusmirek, Michael Sykes and Andy Dennehy.

“It's no longer the 20th century…things change on a feckin' weekly basis…” and we as parents, leaders, and caretakers of children need to recognize this. Some of the most dangerous people that have direct contact with our children, are other children. Children can be the building blocks in a foundation built on strong sense of self-worth and positivity, and they can also be the catalyst to destroying the all ready fragile identity. This week on The Malliard Report, Jim welcomes Vic Ferrari to the show to discuss his tenure with the NYPD, being an author, and what it is like being a child in today's ever changing state. “Author Vic Ferrari is a retired New York City Police Department detective with the hamstrings of a twenty-year-old. A survivor of an Irish father and Italian mother, Vic loves a cold beer and insists on you removing your shoes when entering his home. When he's not writing, he's picking up after his neurotic Irish Wolfhound. Always looking to save a buck, Vic splits his time between Branson, Missouri, and Papua New Guinea.” This is a great show, and it certainly brings up a topic that is not addressed enough in most situations. www.DogCastRadio.comCan you have a dog and work? Of course you can - but possibly not with every dog. In this podcast we hear from a breeder who doesn't home her puppies to owners who work, leaving the home empty all day. We also hear from an owner and breeder who works and keeps her dogs happy. If there's no ultimate wrong or right, how do we ensure our dogs are happy? Plus we celebrate breeders who care about their dogs - as opposed to "greeders" who churn our puppies purely for money.

My new strategy is to actually rest my knee and see if that helps. Not sure why that wasn't my first strategy… But, we all have to go through these thing sin our own ways. The knee doesn't hurt and there is no loss of mobility or anything. Every once in awhile I'll feel a twinge when I'm walking Ollie or doing something weight bearing – but in general I'm feeling strong, healthy and happy. I've got a nice cadence going of lift, bike, swim – with a longer ride on the weekend. I'm really enjoying the summer days and the work from home. At 5 o'clock when the work whistle blows I can leave my office, jump on my bike and go for a ride or head down to the pond and go for a swim or head over to the gym for a weights session. It's a very nice rhythm. It strikes me that I have found this rhythm partly by circumstance, the external factors of the plague and my knee being injured, but also by meeting the universe where it is. Meaning, because of my mindset practices I've somehow turned a this into a quite pleasant situation. I'm at the point now where I'm in good enough practice in all three routines, weights, bike and swim, that I look forward to it and can get a good, hard workout in. I'm particularly happy about the swimming. Like I said before, I wasn't too confident because swimming has always been hard for me. But, I seem to have cracked the code when I trained for that Olympic tri a couple years ago. Apparently, I retained that stroke knowledge. It frankly, amazes me that I can just wander out into the pond after not swimming for 3 years and knock out a satisfying 1,000 meter swim. I can't imagine what people think when this old dude rolls up at the public beach, puts on goggles, wades into the water and disappears over the horizon. Most years I wouldn't swim in that pond in August because it gets too warm, but with all the rain it's stayed temperate. Anyhow, summary is I'm in a good place, keeping the weight off and staying fit. This week we will talk with Eddy who I ran into on YouTube. He's a retied guy trying to build a social media empire. He did a 5K a day for 30 days video that I loved, so we talk about that and some other stuff. In section one I'm going to give you a primer on how to start lifting weights if your strength curious. In section two I'm going to talk about awareness. And how awareness allows us to choose how we make our way in this world. I'll tell you a story. I needed a haircut this week. Even though I don't have much hair anymore, I like to keep it short and comfy, especially in the summer. So I went over to SuperCuts. They said I had to wait 10-15 minutes. So I sat down in a chair to wait. It was very busy in there. Apparently we are in the back-to-school season and the place was full of kids acting like kids. People were coming in and out. The hair cutters were keeping up their chatter as they do. It was a bit of an imbroglio. Imbroglio is one of my fun words I use to let people know how much I love words. It is basically an Italian nominalization – which means to turn a verb into a noun. It's a version of the English word embroil. So, basically an intricate mess with a lot of moving pieces. Anyhow, it was a bit of a noisy imbroglio in the SuperCuts. I decided, since I hadn't done my mediation yet, this would be an excellent use of the 10-minute wait. You might say, ‘why would you try to meditate in a noisy, busy place in an uncomfortable chair?' And the answer is, why not? What's different for the noise in my own head and this noise of the store? Noise is noise. Meditation is not the cessation of noise. It is the observation of noise, the awareness of noise. I used to practice this form of peace when I traveled. It works great in a busy airport or airplane. Or to get to sleep in a strange place. You picture yourself, or more appropriately observe yourself sitting in the environment. You visualize a clear shell or forcefield around you. All of the noise and chaos is outside the shell. You observe the noise and chaos, but you let it go. You are aware of it's externality. Then you focus on your breathing. And you relax into your beautiful, shell of peace within the chaos. When the lady called my name early it took me a few moments to come out of it. I was deeply relaxed. I had to shake it off to get my hair cut. Because, if you can only achieve mindfulness in a comfy quiet room with a statue of the buddha surrounded by candles, you've probably got work to do. On with the show! Section One – Weightlifting - … Eddy Hope Health & Lifestyle Advocate Hi, I'm Eddy and this channel is devoted to Health & Lifestyle. After careers in the Royal Air Force and then as a Police Officer, I took early retirement in 2016 at aged 50. I did this as I felt that my health and general happiness came before the pursuit of perceived career success, or financial status. In March 2021 I was also diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which undiagnosed, has had a profound impact throughout my life and those around me. I now live in Tyneside (UK), with my two gorgeous border collie dogs Lilly and Setu. In this channel I hope to inspire you with ideas and provide the tools to improve your physical and mental health, your relationships, spend more time in the outdoors, get involved in volunteering and much more and all of this without the need to spend a lot of money. Section Two – Awareness - Outro Ok my friends we are aware of and have observed that we have arrived at the end of episode 4-462 of the RunRunLive Podcast. Awesome sauce. I got a couple nice notes this week. One from Jim, who commented on the presentation I made to my work group. I got recognized in this week's team call for helping people stay on their fitness routines. I had another email from Brian who is running Boston this year and has watched that 2018 video of Eric and I running in the storm a bunch of times and told me it gave him inspiration. As much as I love to feed my own overblown narciscism, my point is not that it makes me happy to get good feedback. My point is, like I told Eddy, you never know who you are going impact. It may be 20 minutes of throw-away musing on your part but once you let it loose on the world it may find the person who needs it and resonate with them. Don't ever underestimate your own power and impact. Lean in. Let you light shine. Meet the universe where it is. I was supposed to go down and pace Dave in his 24 hour race last weekend, but he ran headlong into a 3-day heat wave and pulled the plug at 100K. He made the decision early and waved me off. Over Labor Day I'm going to volunteer for the . By the way, we're having the Wapack Trail Race this year on Sept 5th. Come on up and run 18 miles of technical single track. One of my favorite races on one of my favorite trails. Links in the show notes. I do intend to go down to Bird in Hand and stumble around the half with the extra milers the weekend after Labor Day here in the states. Yvonne, that's my wife, Yvonne and I are going to wrap a road trip around it and poke around Amish country. Does that make me officially old? Then I've got to figure out where I'm going to walk the Boston Marathon in October. I'm leaning heavily towards connecting with the ZERO for Prostate cancer people and doing it for Tom. It's a small thing, and it feels self-promotional, but, hey, lean in and listen to the universe when it talks to you! Ollie news is all good. We had our first training session with K9 training up in Nashua and it went really well. He's doing great. One lesson and he's already walking on the slack leash and not pulling at all. This morning I walked him out to the garden, told him to stay, went inside the garden to water my Columbian tomatoes and pick some produce and he stayed the whole time, waited patiently for me to come back out. I took him for a walk in the woods yesterday and he was slack leash the whole time. Even on the down hills which keeps me from having to dig in on my heels and stress my knee. Really happy with this training. Can't wait to start running again and get him to run on a slack leash. One of the current supply chain problems is dog food. I can't get his Eukanuba dog food. Last couple times I've had to get something similar, but not quite right. Currently he's eating the “Large Breed Puppy” category of food. Hopefully this won't turn him into an Irish Wolfhound puppy. I had our old friend Dirt Dawg present to my fitness team on mindfulness this week. I really admire Mike's work as a high school principal and how he's able to lead a purpose driven life. He said something that struck a chord. Teach what you need to learn. Teach what you need to learn. I see Mike from the outside as a purpose driven ultrarunner who has figured out how to stay mindful in a high-stress environment. Mike sees himself as needed to learn, and practice these very traits. And that is part of his practice. He teaches what he needs to learn so that he can not only help his kids and his peers but also as part of his self-awareness practice. And that's what I want you to think about this week as you go about your life. The reason I'm here talking to you is that I needed to teach what I needed to learn. It is part of my practice to talk about these things. The practice is not because we have it figured out. The practice is precisely because we don't have it figured out. We teach what we need to learn. And, as we are teaching what we need to learn, I'll see you out there. In this episode, we look at the group of hounds known as sight hounds or gaze hounds. These dogs are known for using their eyesight to find and track prey, but more importantly, these dogs use their incredible speed to pursue and overtake their quarry. Having been developed almost exclusively for speed, sight hounds even have larger hearts and different blood chemistry from other breeds of dogs. Sight hounds are commonly thought of as originating from the desert regions of the Middle East and the Arabian peninsula, but in fact, sight hounds were developed in many different regions around the world. What these places have in common are large, open spaces where prey animals can be seen from great distances. Commonly known breeds include the Greyhound, the Saluki, the Afghan Hound, the Irish Wolfhound, the Scottish Deerhound, the Whippet, and many, many more. Hare coursing was (and in some places, continues to be) a popular means of competing with sight hounds. Dogs are released to chase a hare; while the hare is not commonly caught, it provides a conclusive method of determining which dogs are the fastest and most agile. Lure coursing is a modern day replica of this event whereby a “lure” (sometimes even just a plastic bag) is pulled at high speed via a cord and pulleys to mimic fleeing prey. Tune in to learn more about the common and obscure breeds of sight hounds as well as how they are hunted and competed today. In the next episode, we’ll get into more detail about modern hunting methods using sight hounds developed for more versatile uses. As always, we thank you for listening and hope you’ll continue to reach out with your comments, questions, and ideas. We can be reached at HDC@northwoodscollective.com. Hark Bookshelvers! It is time to sing like a Samoyed and chuckle like a Chihuahua as it's Off The Shelf time again!Back just in time for a drastic weather change in the UK Corrin, Nat & Steve get to catch up with their old buddy and all round 'top dude' Jordan Shelley! Jordan is a Dog trainer and behaviour specialist - Animal welfare campaigner - Presenter, producer and writer as well as all that great stuff we all used to chew the proverbials on the "Barking Mad Show" back in the day so it was lovely to catch up and see what Jordan has been up to in his, always interesting, life.It turns out that amongst other things Jordan has set up a very important petition to Ban the importation of dogs with cropped ears (a worthy cause indeed). In Jordans words: "There appears to be an alarming rise in dogs imported after undergoing the inhumane procedure of having their ears mutilated, fulfilling the desire for a certain ‘look’ & encouraging a procedure outlawed in England since 1899. It’s time to close this 121-year-old legal loophole".This is a very important cause and we would love if all you Bookshelvers in the UK could sign the petition.Link to the Petition to Ban The Importation Of Dogs With Cropped Earshttps://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/333456?fbclid=IwAR2ynjv1l2yOHa5BQPWl9cFakanVn93a5hWXTj7-NzzvRZt4zYl2U9MY4OcLink to Jordan Shelley's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jordanwshelleyLink to Steve & Corrins Goodall Dog Training Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/goodalldogs/Link to Nat's Training & Behaviour Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/Natdogs/Link to Drax's Galactic Adventure Facebook page (Nat's rescued Irish Wolfhound)https://www.facebook.com/Draxthewolfhound/Link to Steve & Sallys Childrens book 'Jack & Billy Puppy Tales'https://www.facebook.com/JackandBillyPuppyTales/Link to Grant Sharkey's Spotify page (Grant's amazing song 'Grow' features each week as our outro tune.https://open.spotify.com/artist/13PaCwwgVR77TbJH6XAVHQ?si=EOQGmWdCRCiXdECNmJvNAQ
In this podcast episode, we recall the stories of the individuals who brought about great dog breeds and how some famous breeds came to be named for individuals. The world’s beloved dog breeds are the product of careful, patient breeding by many people over many years. But, occasionally, a great breed is the product of years of painstaking work by an individual. Some of these people are fondly remembered by generations of dog fanciers. Others are forgotten and some live on through their canine namesakes. They are the hobbyists, scientists, even tax collectors whose purpose-bred dogs make the world a better place. This is a short history of how some dogs got their names. Bonafide Bits: In the early 1950s, a Doberman Pinscher named Storm won Westminster’s Best in Show, two years in a row. The Gordon Setter was among the breeds recognized when the AKC was founded in 1884. Hollywood elites Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, and Cary Grant all kept Sealyham Terriers. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is the only breed named after a fictional character. North Carolina’s state dog, the Plott Hound, was bred to be a big game hunter. Sir Edwin Landseer’s painting ‘Alpine Mastiffs Reanimating a Distressed Traveler’ hangs in the AKC Museum of the Dog. Ireland Designates “Heritage Status” for Native Dog Breeds Sean Delmar, President Irish Kennel Club Sean Delmar, president of the Irish Kennel Club and Kerry Blue Terrier breeder, has just achieved the holy grail of “heritage status” for the nine native Irish breeds. Heritage Status JULY 16, 2019 I am pleased to announce that the 9 Irish Breeds have been http://www.ikc.ie/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/015-Native-Irish-Pedigree-Dog-Breeds-2.docx (granted National Heritage status by the Minister). This is a wonderful step in the future protection and development of our amazing Irish Breeds and comes after many years of representations by those committed to Irish Breeds. On behalf of The Irish Kennel Club I would like to specifically acknowledge the commitment of the following who put there heart and soul into making this a reality. Cathy Delmar, Eddie Burke, Vincent Flannelly. Sean Delmar, President “I thought there was a chance these breeds could go out of existence,” Delmar said. “I thought the Government should take some responsibility. We wanted to convince them these dog breeds are part of the patchwork quilt of the Irish people.” This exciting success required a lot of initiatives over 10 years, Delmar noted. The small group of folks involved did demonstrations, paraded dogs at schools, had dogs on “chat shows” on TV. “We built up a portfolio so we had something to show the government, not just an idea,” Delmar said. “We created a heritage weekend revolving around dogs. Even hawking with setters in the midland bogs. People learned a lot about Irish breeds. The general populace is now more aware.” The Irish Kennel Club was only the national body that made the application. So much enthusiasm and work done was from a handful of devoted fanciers, Delmar said. “Dogs developed because of working ability originally,” Delmar observed. “Ireland has the Irish Wolfhound and Kerry Beagle, Red setter, Red and white setter and Water spaniel. In the terrier group we have Kerry Blue, Irish, Glen of Imaal, Soft Coated Wheaten.” Purebred dogs are history and art Wolfhounds are one of the ancient symbols of Ireland along with the shamrock and harp. Kerry beagle are a hunting pack unique to Ireland. During the potato famine in Ireland, ships carrying refugees to the US, took Kerry beagles with them. Delmar expects these dogs could be found behind coonhounds in the US. Romantic figures in Irish history hunted on horseback with hawks and setters, using nets before guns were invented. Delmar’s telling of the rich tapestry of Irish history, includes Grace O’Malley — one of the earliest known female pirates, born around 1530 in Ireland and growing up to lead a 20-ship fleet. Her contribution to the development of the Irish Water Spaniel was the connection to her incursions on the Iberian Peninsula. “We just undersell everything we do,” Delmar said. “We don’t spend enough time telling people that what you get with pedigree dogs is predictable qualities, predictable characteristics. Don’t get that in crossbreds. Can be great dogs. They might have one or two of the qualities. But it’s a lucky get. Like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates.” Support this podcast

This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1057/ (Day 1057) of our trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life – something to cheer you and provide a bit a levity in your life. We are told inhttps://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+15:30&version=NLT (Proverbs 15:30,)“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health.”We are also encouraged in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+17:22&version=NLT (Proverbs 17:22,) “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength.” Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let's jump right in with today's funny, which is titled… It's a Dog's Life Sam, a veterinarian, had been called to examine a very ill fifteen-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Duke. The dog’s owner, Ron, and his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Duke and they were hoping for a miracle. Sam examined Duke and found he was dying of cancer. Sam told the family that he couldn’t do anything for Duke, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As they made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told Sam they thought it would be good for four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, Sam felt that familiar catch in his throat as Duke’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that Sam wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Duke slipped peacefully away. Shane seemed to accept Duke’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. As Sam and the family sat together for a while after Duke’s death, they wondered aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.” Startled, they all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned everyone. They had never heard a more comforting explanation. Shane said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life—like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” Shane, the four-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.” I hope that brought a smile to your face today, if so, pass that smile onto someone else who needs it. Our Thursday thought is “love everyone, all the time and be nice to them.” Our verse for today is https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+4%3A4-5&version=NLT (Philippians 4:4-5,) “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.” As you enjoy these nuggets of humor, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1058/ (tomorrow) for another day of our Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy. If you would like to listen to any of our past 1056 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are all available at...
This is a really great interview, from the end of April 2018. Listen to her speak and it is easy to understand what a great writer and vet she is. I look forward to her return to the program over the summer. Highly-recommended reading. Dr. Suzy Fincham-Gray is a San Diego-area vet, originally from England, has written a wonderful and very readable book about the practice of veterinary medicine. From the promotional material: My Patients and Other Animals is a moving memoir of a life spent in the company of animals—a veterinarian sheds light on the universal experience of loving, healing, and losing our beloved pets, and the many ways they change our lives. Suzy Fincham-Gray dreamed of becoming a vet since she was a young girl. In 2000, she graduated, with honors from the Royal Veterinary College in London. Her journey in veterinary medicine has taken her from the English-Welsh border to an inner city Philadelphia ER to the U.S. West Coast, with thousands of stories collected along the way. In this unforgettable and profound literary debut, we are taken into the heart of the relationship we share with the animals in our lives, and the decisions we must make when a loved one becomes sick. We meet Grayling, an Irish Wolfhound in need of intensive care. With Ned, a rescue dog from Mexico, we experience the joy of saving an animal from disease. And the story of Sweetie explores the lengths doctors will go to save a patient. Fincham-Gray is a rare breed—a clinician with an elegant literary style. She affords a view few can obtain and writes with the same tenderness she brings to her patients, whose needs she must meet with her mind, her hands and her heart. Rich in warmth and humor, My Patients and Other Animals is a memorable story of compassion, healing and hope. Reading this wonderful book reminded me of my interview with Dr. Burtch of the Birchbark Foundation. Another really smart and compassionate vet. "What's New?!"Happy New Year! This is the beginning of the church year -which begins with the season of Advent - filled with the anticipation of thearrival of Christ into the world. He came and He comes again - wheneverwe invite Him. Even the saints like to have an invitation - a welcome. But Jesus was rejected while still in the womb - the Inn was fullyou remember - and his mother delivered him in the stable - among thefriendly animals. Animals know so much more than we give them creditfor - witness the animals who went to higher ground before the gigantictsunami. How does my god know to go which day to go the door to waitfor the maid to come - whom she loves dearly because Elsa stays homeand keeps her company all day, whereas I run off to church. How do theswallows find Capistrano? How do pengins know where to march to?In this world of ours, there's a miracle around every corner -something new to be discovered - something different to understand.Jesus was something new - something different - we've neverquite gotten used to him. That's because He was none other than Godwalking among us - God with us - Emanuel! - which is what Emanualmeans - God with us! Because we as mankind never got ourselves toGod, there was only one solution - God had to come to us.We tried to be faithful. We tried our best to follow God's laws aswe understood them, but we failed. We poured over the sacred books seeking a better understandingof God, but things there seemed so strange and incomprehensible. We built a grand temple in the hope of containing God, a housegrand enough for God to reside in, but following the rituals of the templewas a pale substitute for the living God.We listened to the prophets and nodded in assent to their demands. But agreeing with them was one thing: obeying them was another. So many of our attempts to get close to God, to walk with God,to obey God only seemed to drive us further from God. What could wedo? The answer is that we could do nothing. Something had to bedone for us. We could not come to God, so God came to us.Advent means, that caught in our old ways, following ouraccustomed scripts, going through the motions, God came to us. Godreached out to us, despite the futility of our groping toward him, Godembraced us, stood beside us, and became one with us.It's that closeness that Communion accomplishes for us if we havethe eye to see the miracle in the common place. Before His physical departure from the Earth, Jesus chose elementsby which we could remember him - two things that were at every meal -bread and wine. He gave symbolic meaning to each - a symbol of hisPresence.Shortly after my father died, I found my mother sitting sadly in achair, holding my father's shoes. They weren't his dress shoes - but hiswork shoes which didn't smell all that great from years of sweaty use - butstill they were the perfect symbol of the dedicated, hardworking husbandand father he was - who was up before light and finishing after dark tosupport a family of nine children. What would symbolize you? What is the essence of who you arethat could be capsulized into a symbol? And how does that essence relate to the fierce directions given usin the Scripture today "We should prepare ourselves to fight evil withthe weapons that belong to the light."The weapons that belong to the light are the principles of Jesusthat are the only things powerful enough make it possible for our world tosurvive - for the earth to be preserved and for wars to cease that couldcause the end of civilization. God doesn't have to bring the end of time,we're doing a very good job of heading for it entirely on our own. When I was a kid, we were always crying wolf - saying there wasa crisis when there was none. Once such day, my next older brothershouted out from the old swimmin' hole that he was drowning. His criesof "Help - Help, I'm drowning" didn't fool any of us. He went under. Wewaited eagerly for him to come back up. The only problem - He didn't!He WAS drowning - whereupon a family member dived in, found himbelow the surface, and dragged him to shore - where he coughed up a lotof water, came to and continued on in the land of the living. But he had been through quite an experience. Thinking he wasgoing to meet his Maker, he said that every mean and terrible thing thathe had ever done passed through his mind in an instant. God didn't haveto judge him, he had already judged himself.God doesn't have to bring an end to things...we're doing a fine jobof that ourselves....thinking we can war our way to piece - totally oppositeto what Jesus said - totally foreign to the way He was in the world. As we come to the communion table today, our task is simple, toexamine ourselves to see how like the Christ we have become or need tobecome - to ask how concerned we are about His Church, His Kingdom,His reign as King of Kings - how involved are we in the things of theSpirit. It is likely that instead, we have fallen prey to what our culturecalls us to become. A recent church of England report puts it this way:"Where previous generations found their identity in what theyproduced, we now find our identity in what we consume. "Never at any funeral have I said, He consumed four luxury cars,to luxury homes and half of the Forge's wine list. Spiritually, those thingswon't get us anywhere - they certainly don't stop wars or produce peace.Jesus gives us the bread and wine to remember him by, but for thepurpose of remembering that we are his hands and feet in the world toaccomplish His tasks. He walks beside us hoping to see us doing thingsthat will make a difference. The Church just sent a thousand dollars from our BenevolenceBudget to help keep the Interfaith Worker Justice organization going -giving them money to help others who earn very little to get a living wage- pressuring Burger King, Taco Bell and others on behalf of the tomatopickers who earn very little - or pressuring universities and housingcommunities to pay their groundskeepers a living wage. They know intheir hearts to help these people is to make a difference where it countsmost - with whom it counts most.So what is the symbol by which you will be remembered ? -perhaps a sweaty shirt from the latest march for worker's wages: or fromserving on the food line at the church's luncheon for the homeless, or aparking stub from one of the many committee meetings you have attendedto further the work of your church, your service club or arts organization."I say this because you know that we live in an important time,Yes, it is now time for you to wake up from your sleep. Our salvationis nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almostfinished." (Romans 13:11.)Into the darkness, the Christ of Light appears - again this advent.Showing us how Life is to be done and won. - to give us anothr chance. He came not to consume but to give - to love - to share. That's why we'rehere - to learn to walk in that light, to live in that light. The animals in the stable intuitively understood that. So must we.In closing, I'd like to share A Dog's Purpose, from a 4 year old.Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten year-oldIrish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they werehoping for a miracle.I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told thefamily we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform theeuthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.As we made the arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thoughtit would be goof for four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. Theyfelt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker'sfamily surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for thelast time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The littleboy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloudabout the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunnedme. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to livea good life - like loving everybody all the time and being nice right?"The four year old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to dothat, so they don't have to stay as long."LIVE SIMPLY. LOVE GENEROUSLY. CARE DEEPLY.SPEAK KINDLY. LEAVE THE REST TO GOD. MAKE YOUR LIFEA SYMBOL OF THE LIFE OF CHRIST. Now.....Come, dance in delight because love has comeand the wine of celebration is being pouredCome, lift up your heartsto receive the abundance that waits for usfor the Christ is present.and we touch the life of God.Come to this sacred table, not because you must, but becauseyou may..... .Communion Meditation Notes(Not edited nor proofed)The Rev.
