My roommate and I are pretty different people in a number of ways, not the least of which is his grasp of (and my indifference to) things like DragonCon, cosplay, online gameplay and social interaction outside of traditional social media. His interest in a lot of that, along with is being a regular listener of the LawFare podcast "Rational Security" lead him to recommending a recent episode: "The 'Ten Years, Still Off-Key' Edition." In that episode's first 20 minutes or so, host Scott R. Andeson and The Atlantic's Shane Harris discuss a key element to the Tyler Robinson / Charlie Kirk assassination story that almost no one is talking about: the connections between online radicalization and young men like Robinson who are behind many recent public acts of gun violence. The "too long/didn't listen" summation: everyone (left and right) seems eager to only make motivations about political ideology when online radicalization looms as a greater ingredient for the toxic stew that led to Kirk's assassination, along with other high profile cases Harris alludes to in this conversation.------That being said, it was an experience of my own - having dated a closeted Mormon man for more than a year about two decades ago - that provides some insight into why a Tyler Robinson - Mormon, conservative family, southwest Utah resident with something of a same-sex attraction - found himself to be something of a 'loner' drawn to acceptance in an online community in the first place. Also, I've learned a lot about what 'stochastic terrorism' is and it turns out I've been fumbling around, rhetorically about it in recent weeks not knowing there was even a term for it, but damned if it doesn't seem appropriate to discuss now, no?------That doesn't mean, however, the far-right talking heads like Scott Jennings and The Federalist's Brianna Lyman aren't still working hard to paint this narrative that Charlie Kirk's assassination and any social media celebration of it is somehow “representative of a large part of the left.” CNN's Abby Phillip, along with Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden, held that fire line in place ... for now.------An op/ed I somehow stumbled onto from Unfinished Man writer Sean Shopman warns of "The Deadly Trap Tyler Robinson Fell Into: What Every Young Man Needs to Learn Before It's Too Late." I found it profound and share-worthy. ------Finally, the sudden and quizzical shelving of Jimmy Kimmel from ABC -TV late night is both mystifying (his statement Monday was factual and frankly, he's had sharper takes ...) and alarming for free speech in a tense era. It's why I believe now, more than ever, if the American experiment is going to survive this dark chapter, we're going to need independent journalists to guide us.

Here we go with the first of three (yikes, let's hope it's just three) episodes reviewing everything we did at Dragon Con, the ultimate gathering of geeks over Labor Day weekend in Atlanta. All our weird friends from the American Sci-Fi Classics Track! Our guided tour for new Dragon Con attendees, during which we were secretly recorded for nefarious purposes! Dangerous fake Oreos! Classic arcade games and Geek Singalongs with Kate from Strange Animals Podcast! And some Molly Ringwald-style antics at the 80s Prom and the 120 Minutes dance party! I'm back from Dragon Con and got to moderate some panels! I also talk about the artist who was kicked out of artist alley for selling AI art and explain exactly why they were kicked out and exactly why (and which) police were involved. Hollow Knight: Silksong released and broke the internet - and maybe makes a great case as for why digital preorders should actually be a thing. Some indie developers are upset at Silksong's $20 price tag because they can't afford to sell their game for $20 and it isn't as feature rich as Silksong. Then we talk to Rob about Dragon Con.

The latest episode of Wise_N_Nerdy brings together hosts Charles and Joe with two incredible guests, Tyra Burton and Devocite, for a Dragon Con special packed with stories, laughs, and heartfelt reflections. The episode kicks off with the Question of the Week: “What is your favorite thing about conventions?” The answers highlight what makes conventions magical—whether it's nerding out with like-minded fans, people-watching the jaw-dropping cosplay, or the thrill of being on panels. From there, the crew dives deep into their Dragon Con adventures. Since it was Devocite's very first Dragon Con, he shares how it lived up to the hype and how he had fascinating conversations with countless people all weekend. Tyra talks about her packed schedule of panels, with a highlight being the Awesome Women in Digital Media panel that left her inspired. Joe recalls the thrill of joining his first large-room panel alongside Dungeon Crawler Carl author Matt Dinniman, while Charles takes a moment to spotlight the unsung heroes of the con—the volunteers. From live multicasting a panel into an overflow room at the last minute to completely swapping out audio setups between sessions, these volunteers made the impossible look effortless. The group also talks about the fan-favorite Swag-n-Seek tradition at Dragon Con, where attendees hide nerdy treasures for others to discover and take home. It's the perfect reminder of the creativity and generosity that make convention culture so special.Whether you're a con veteran or planning your first trip, this episode captures the heart of why conventions matter: community, creativity, and unforgettable memories. Find your FAMdom in the stories, laughter, and connections that bring us all together.Wise_N_Nerdy: Where Fatherhood Meets Fandom

Bigfoot prints . . . do they track? So many questions! First, we discuss skeptic offerings at Dragon Con, then muse about Florida wanting to get rid of vaccine mandates for public school and RFK Jr. rolling back access to the COVID-19 shots just as we enter respiratory virus season. Seasoned Bigfoot enthusiast Matt Crowley ("Bigfooter of the Year," 2005) joins us to discuss all aspects of the main, namesake evidence for Bigfoot. Those huge honkin' tracks of his (or hers). We go into the competitive subculture of Bigfootery and nuances like dermal ridges and toe flexion. How do believers reckon with the lack of consistency across different footprints, when it comes to number of toes and such? Is it proper to call Bigfoot prints, and casts, a type of folk art? Matt recommends many good books on the topic, and we learn our way around the many names, experts, and hoaxers in the scene since the 1950s.

Widely proclaimed to be one of the best and most influenctial films ever made, it is the first feature film for Writer/Director/Producer/Actor Orson Welles. So, does it live up to the hype? The discourse at hand delves into the intricacies of DragonCon, a paramount cultural event that transcends the traditional confines of a comic convention, embracing a plethora of genres and communities. Central to our discussion is the exploration of characters such as Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart, alongside iconic figures like Iron Man, Doctor Doom, and Black Panther, as we navigate the Smartest Marvel Character Tier List. We engage in a profound analysis of the artistry and dedication exhibited by cosplayers, particularly highlighting the talents of individuals like Renee for Atlanta, whose Ironheart costume exemplifies the intersection of creativity and fandom. Furthermore, we scrutinize the evolving narratives within the Marvel Universe, contemplating the intellectual prowess of characters like Mr. Fantastic and Blue Marvel, while also acknowledging the cultural significance of representation in contemporary storytelling. Join us as we unravel these multifaceted themes, shedding light on the vibrant tapestry that is the world of comic conventions and their far-reaching influence.First up, NavyMontel is back fresh from DragonCon
Bryan Young was on hand at Dragon Con to bring you one of our favorite treats every year: the authors of Star Wars. The panel this year consisted of authors Timothy Zahn, Delilah Dawson, and Jonathan Jackson Miller, and they talked about their time in the Star Wars trenches, what they have coming up, and new anecdotes about a galaxy far, far away. Also jizz wailing.

✦ English actor and producer Jon Boyega gained international recognition for his role as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy; however, that was not Boyega's first dip into science fiction. His debut feature-length film, 2011's "Attack the Block," and his most recently released film, "They Cloned Tyrone," both use the science fiction comedy genre to explore deeper social issues. Boyega appeared at Dragon Con over Labor Day weekend, and City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes caught up with him to discuss his passion for acting, his role as a film producer, and his love for Atlanta. ✦ City Lights Collective member and award-winning Atlanta comedian Joel Byars is one of the hardest-working people in the business. He hosts many comedy events around town, and his podcast, "Hot Breath Pod," aims to uplift his fellow comedians. Byars joins us weekly to share his picks for this week's must-see comedy, and today his mix includes a couple of big-name touring stars and a local treasure returning home to play the Fox Theater. ✦ There's no better place for Shakespeare than an outdoor theatre, and this fall, the Atlanta Shakespeare Company launches "A Shakespeare Happening," the first-ever free public Shakespeare festival in DeKalb County, taking place in the picturesque neighborhood of Avondale Estates. Alongside the theatrical performances, there will be live music and workshops for all ages. The first day of festivities is this Saturday and begins with "Tempest Jr.," an adaptation of "The Tempest" for young audiences. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans recently discussed the series with festival creator Nicole Sage, and Atlanta Shakespeare Company associate managing director Katie Grace Kirby. ✦ Long before modern choirs and vocal coaches, there was Sacred Harp—a uniquely American way of singing that turned everyday people into music-makers. This powerful and historic tradition dates back to the early 1800s and continues to thrive today, bringing together communities in spirited, four-part harmony. The 120th convention of the United Sacred Harp Musical Association comes to the Foundry at Puritan Mill on September 13 and 14, 2025. It is expected to be the largest gathering in a generation, drawing hundreds of singers from across the US and beyond. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane sat down with Matt Hinton, a longtime Sacred Harp singer and scholar, to learn more about this enduring and uniquely American form of group singing. ✦ Atlanta's vibrant world of cocktails and zero-proof beverages thrives in our bars and restaurants as well as our local distilleries and non-alcoholic bottle shops. Few may know this world better than Beth McKibben, editor in chief and senior dining editor at Rough Draft Atlanta. Beth's expertise is invaluable as she continually explores our city's elevated beverage programs and examines the latest trends in mixology. She joins The City Lights Collective monthly for "The Beverage Beat," and this month, McKibben discusses what she calls "transitional cocktails," sips to savor during our fake-fall slash second summer season—also known as September in Atlanta.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Charles, Joe, and special guest Josh Cooper (Uploads of Fun) kick off with bad dad jokes, rule on a contentious Parliament of Papas case (Disney vs. Comic-Con), and trade stories about rewatching childhood movies as parents—TV edits, innuendo, and all. Audience mic stories bring the heat, from TMNT's rooftop to Robocop's cartoon tie-ins. The crew closes with practical strategies for overcoming sheltered upbringings: context, conversation, and teaching courage instead of fear.Bad Dad Jokes (rolled a 6)Icebreakers from stage and audience (dragons + fast food; “Poof! You're a drink.”).Ongoing bit: “There is no such thing as a good dad joke.”Parliament of Papas (rolled a 4)Reddit case: “Am I the buttface for going to Comic-Con after my wife took our kid (and her ex) to Disney without me—using our miles?”Panel reaction: finances + co-parenting ≠ unilateral decisions; ex attending without current spouse is a relational red flag.Consensus: wife = primary buttface; husband needs boundaries; bigger issue is relationship health.Daddy, Tell Me a Story (rolled a 2) — Rewatching childhood movies as parentsExamples: Caddyshack, Revenge of the Nerds, Three Fugitives, Firestarter, TMNT (1990 rooftop scene), Blankman, Transformers: The Movie ('86 toy-reset trauma), Robocop (how was this a cartoon?), The Ringer, Monty Python: Meaning of Life.Themes: TV edits vs. theatrical cuts; using IMDb Parents Guide; explaining dated humor; navigating innuendo in “family” animation; when to pause/skip with kids. How do I overcome my sheltered upbringing? (segued after gift moment)Hosts/guest share growing up Pentecostal/Southern Baptist/Mormon variations: satanic panic era (D&D, Magic cards), filtered DVD players, language rules.Parenting approaches now: teach context and timing for language; “if you don't know what it means, don't say it”; consent to discuss anything; “If it's on TV, it's not real.”Tools for fear/nightmares: teach lucid-dream control (look at your hand; give yourself a bazooka), anchor objects (a huggable TARDIS), model calm vs. catastrophizing.Live mic stories: rewatch shocks (Harry Potter attitudes, Severance tension without nudity, Blue Eye Samurai content surprise, 2001: A Space Odyssey at age six, Jaws jump scare), “that channel” confessions, schoolyard language, and representing disability positively in The Ringer.Parenting wisdom from audience: treat kids as autonomous humans; teach agency, not fear.Family-friendly doesn't mean sterile—context, conversation, and consent beat blanket bans.Rewatches are opportunities: talk era, edits, and what's changed culturally.Co-parenting logistics require transparency, not unilateral “surprises.”Teach courage over fear; give kids cognitive tools to manage scary media and language.“Everything I do is family-friendly—as long as you're my family.” —Charles“Teach time and place. Context turns ‘forbidden' into teachable.” —Josh“The second you posted to Reddit, you knew the answer—this is a relationship problem.” —Panel“If it's on TV, it's not real. And we can talk about anything.” —Charles

While I'm at Dragon Con, here's an old Patreon episode about Tennessee water mysteries, including some spooky sightings of what were probably bears, and some mystery fish! Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. As this episode goes live, I should be at Dragon Con, so I decided to go ahead and schedule an old Patreon episode to run instead of trying to get a new episode ready in time. It's about some water mysteries in my home state of Tennessee, although I actually just moved away from Tennessee to Georgia. Tennessee is in the southeastern United States, a long thin state divided into three geographical sections. East Tennessee borders the southern Appalachian Mountains, Middle Tennessee is on the Cumberland Plateau, and West Tennessee borders the Mississippi River. The only natural lake in the state is Reelfoot in northwestern Tennessee, a shallow, swampy body of water formed in the early 19th century. Before 1811, instead of a lake a small river flowed through the area, a tributary of the Mississippi. In earlier accounts, Reelfoot River is called Red Foot River. Most of the residents of the area at the time were Choctaw, although white settlers lived in the small town of New Madrid near the bank of the Mississippi. From December 1811 through February 1812, a series of earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone changed the land radically. There were three main quakes and innumerable smaller ones, ranging from an estimated 6.7 for the smallest quake to a possible 8.8 for the largest. In the initial quake and aftershocks on 16 December 1811, chimneys collapsed, trees fell, and fissures opened and closed, projecting water or sand high in the air. Boats on the Mississippi capsized as huge waves crashed from bank to bank. A woman named Eliza Bryan, who lived in New Madrid, wrote an account of the quakes: On the 16th of December, 1811, about 2 o'clock a.m., a violent shock of earthquake, accompanied by a very awful noise, resembling loud but distant thunder, but hoarse and vibrating, followed by complete saturation of the atmosphere with sulphurous vapor, causing total darkness. The screams of the inhabitants, the cries of the fowls and beasts of every species, the falling trees, and the roaring of the Mississippi, the current of which was retrograde for a few minutes, owing, as it is supposed, to an eruption in its bed, formed a scene truly horrible. From this time on until the 4th of February the earth was in continual agitation, visibly waving as a gentle sea. On that day there was another shock…and on the 7th, at about 4 o'clock a.m., a concussion took place so much more violent than those preceding it that it is denominated the ‘hard shock.' The Mississippi first seemed to recede from its banks, and its waters gathered up like a mountain… Then, rising 15 or 20 feet perpendicularly and expanding, as it were, at the same time, the banks overflowed with a retrograde current rapid as a torrent. A riverboat captain reported in another account that his boat was caught in a ferocious current on the Mississippi, crashing across waves he estimated as six feet high, or 1.8 m. He also reported whirlpools that he estimated were 30 feet deep, or 9 m. He saw all the trees on either bank fall at once. The December quake was so large it was felt across North America, from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Then, only five weeks later, it happened again, followed by the third major earthquake on 7 February. Only 15 miles, or 24 km, from the epicenter, the land dropped 20 feet, or 6 m, and created a basin that immediately filled with water. Reelfoot Lake was formed, Tennessee's only natural lake. Reelfoot is a state park these days, popular with boaters, fishers, hunters, and birdwatchers. The only cryptid sighting I could find took place in the Glass community near Obion, within ten miles, or 16 km, of the lake. A man who grew up in Glass reported in 2009 that a bipeda...
