At the Newport Rising Festival this year, we were inspired by the story of the Chartist march on Newport in 1839 and their six-point People's Charter to think about the reforms being made to our national democracy in 2024 via the Senedd Cymru (Members and Elections) Bill. Steered by our own Matthew Hexter, our guests discuss the proposed reforms to parliament framed through the six points of the People's Charter and consider whether a modern day Chartist would approve of the recommendations. Nor can groups facilitate absentee voting.  Election officials voiced concern over the potential disruption of election-day auditing, and the banning of private grants to offset the costs of elections, which, like most of these new restrictions, were based on false claims of widespread election fraud.Links to more information on this restrictive Missouri bill and groups taking action are at our website, AmericanDemocracyMinute.orgGranny D said, “Democracy is not something we have, it's something we DO.”  For the American Democracy Minute, I'm Brian Beihl.

After much campaigning, the recent Elections Bill will have amendments which will change this failure. The government's Elections Bill passes, fundamentally changing the democratic process in the UK, disenfranchising millions of voters in order to favour the Conservatives. At the same time, the 'independent' body that makes sure elections are fair, the Electoral Commission, has its independence removed. Despite the limited powers the Electoral Commission has, this move to put it under government control is deeply worrying.

Has the Government got away with this failing too easily considering the amounts of lives that were lost during this time? The conversation then moves on to consider the Mail on Sunday's much-criticised article about Angela Rayner, and reports of an MP watching pornography in parliament. They debate whether these scandals and the aftermath of Partygate are smoke and mirrors to distract the public from serious issues that Britain is facing, such as the cost of living crisis. The panel chew over the news that electoral commissions are set to be brought to the control of Government ministers, and delve into the potential impact that this could have on democracy. The panel also share their views on No 10 backing Jacob Rees-Mogg over his drive to get civil servants to stop working from home, and analyse China's plans to build a military base on Solomon Island.Created & produced by Podcast Partners: www.podcastpartners.comSign up to receive updates by email when a new episode drops at www.wrightonthenail.fm

We speak to the Chair of the RNIB, Anna Tylor and also to Rachael Andrews, who initiated (and won) a high court ruling that the current accessibility provisions for blind and partially sighted people at polling stations is unlawful. A new educational astronomy project, called Audio Universe, has been launched by the universities of Newcastle and Portsmouth. It's a guided tour of our galaxy, and its aim is to allow people full access to the wonders of the universe, and to encourage visually impaired people to become keen amateur astronomers, or even contemplate a career in astronomy. They've done this by turning the light from objects in space into sounds so that blind and partially sighted people can hear, spatially, where different planets and stars are located within our galaxy. We hear some of the project, we speak to two youngsters who have experienced the Audio Universe and also to blind astronomer Dr Nic Bonne, who is also the expert tour guide in the project. We also speak to Rachel Lambert, a teacher for visually impaired children and the space ship's captain. The music in the project is by Dr Leigh Harrison, the sound design is by Dr Chris Harrison of Newcastle University and Dr James Trayford of the University of Portsmouth. The image shows these from outer space. In the top left is a series of bright blue stars, surrounded by smaller stars that are less bright and more distant. In the foreground is Earth, with half of it in darkness. In the top right is a series of bright red stars, which perhaps represent other planets or large stars.

Plans to require voters to show photo ID at polling stations were recently introduced in Parliament under the Elections Bill. But The RNIB are concerned that this will make the electoral process even less accessible for blind and partially sighted voters, who are seemingly disproportionately less likely to hold a passport or driving licence. We talk to the RNIB's Director of Development Keith Valentine about the charity's concerns surrounding this. And we get some answers from Network Rail's Head of Public and Passenger Safety, Allan Spence about their plans for tactile paving across their network. There have been some promising signs emerging from Network Rail over the last 12 months, as they have installed tactile on a significant number of platform edges. However, their current plans to equip all stations by 2029 has been dubbed by charities as not being quick enough. Tonight, we're asking whether this installation could be sped up, what funds are available for said installation and whether any temporary safety measures are being put in place whilst these plans are being carried out. Breaking Down H.R. 1 Federal Elections Bill Disaster Senior legal counsel for the Heritage Foundation, Hans von Spakovsky, breaks down H.R. 1, the federal elections bill that the Democrats are trying to push through Congress. It passed the House last week with only Democrats supporting it.  The bill would force states to adopt universal mail-in ballots, early voting, same-day voter registration, online voter registration, and automatic voter registration for any individual listed in state and federal government databases, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles and welfare offices, ensuring duplicate registrations and that millions of illegal immigrants are quickly registered to vote. States would be required to count every mail-in vote that arrives up to 10 days after Election Day. States must also allow ballot harvesting—where paid political operatives collect absentee ballots from places such as nursing homes—exposing our most vulnerable voters to coercion and increasing the risk that their ballots will be tampered with. At the same time, state and local election officials would be stripped of their ability to maintain the accuracy of voter rolls, barred from verifying voter eligibility, and voter ID would be banned from coast to coast.
