Send us a textIf you ever find yourself seeing demons or inhuman things, and are really uncertain as to whether or not they are dreams or reality, maybe you would develop a feeling of solidarity by watching Jacob's Ladder (1990). Actually, no. Maybe that's not such a good idea.
Out on her first night on the beat, rookie NYPD cop Megan Turner (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes upon a robbery in a grocery store and takes down the perpetrator. However as soon as she takes him down, things take a strange turn as one witness flees the scene with that perp's weapon. Soon after, Megan meets a mysterious commodies trader named Eugene played by Ron Silver (Timecop, Reversal of Fortune, The West Wing) and....things get even stranger from there. :o These events kick off a slick, violent action thriller directed by Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Point Break, Zero Dark Thirty) relatively earlier in her career. Back in the spring of 1990, this film underperformed but has since garnered a cult following....also included in the cast are Clancy Brown, Elizabeth Pena, Louise Fletcher, and Kevin Dunn. PART TWO In 1993, Jennifer Ertman (14) and Elizabeth Pena (16), were rushing home trying to meet curfew. What should have been an ordinary evening for the teens quickly took a devastating turn when they encountered a group of drunk teenage boys who called themselves the “Black and White” gang. The story of Jennifer and Elizabeth became a symbol of the need for greater awareness and action against gang activity. During the subsequent trial, victim impact statements were introduced for the first time in the state of Texas, allowing the families of Jennifer and Elizabeth to directly address the court and express the emotional toll the crime had taken on their lives. These statements gave a powerful, personal voice to the victims' families, highlighting the profound loss and the lasting impact of violence on loved ones. The case not only led to convictions but also marked a turning point in how the justice system handled the voices of victims' families, offering a way for them to seek closure and ensure their pain was acknowledged. This case will leave you wondering: How can such evil even exist in the world? And how did they all seem to find each other? How do these paths cross, at that exact moment, when everything could've been different?Sources: Pure Murder by Corey Mitchell https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/tx-court-of-criminal-appeals/1323293.htmlhttps://www.beaumontenterprise.com/news/article/texas-executes-houston-gang-leader-in-rape-729355.phphttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/35611708/sean_derrick-o'brienhttps://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/medellin-executed-for-rape-murder-of-houston-1770696.phphttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/135348367/randy_lee-ertmanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEeAAK1gBN4https://www.khou.com/embeds/video/9825/iframehttps://www.oxygen.com/prosecuting-evil-with-kelly-siegler/season-1/episode-7/the-darkest-of-nightshttps://abc13.com/jennifer-ertman-elizabeth-pena-ertman-pena-murders-texas-true-crime/13419380/Rotten Mango Episode 87https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/First-execution-nears-in-victims-right-case-1881082.phpSend us a textEmail Residue: residuepodcast@gmail.comFind RESIDUE online:Instagram: @residuepodcastTik Tok: @residuepodcast Facebook: Residue:A True Crime Podcast Credits: RESIDUE is Hosted/Produced/Researched/Edited by Chrissy Champagne THEME SONG: "Dance Of Death" by Purple Planet Music collection written and performed by Chris Martyn and Geoff Harvey. In this episode of "The Morning Report," host Willie Lawson delves into the complexities of federal workforce management under the Biden and Trump administrations. The discussion focuses on the deep state narrative and the political dynamics surrounding bureaucratic appointments and roles, particularly in light of recent controversies involving high-profile political appointees.Across the episode, Willie discusses the case of Elizabeth Pena, a former aide to the Biden-Harris administration, who faced scrutiny over her conversion from a political appointee to a career role at the Department of Labor. The episode explores allegations of procedural discrepancies and institutional loyalty in federal hiring practices, using Pena's firing as a case study. The episode's themes revolve around key GOP initiatives targeting deep state operatives and ensuring loyalty to administrations, with a look at Trump's agenda to scrutinize and reform entrenched practices.Key Takeaways:The episode highlights the concept of the "deep state" and its impact on political and career roles within the federal government.Elizabeth Pena's firing serves as a case study of alleged deep state maneuvers within the Department of Labor. The Trump administration's efforts to eliminate political appointees disguised as career employees are examined.Discussions include the broader implications of political loyalty versus constitutional or administrative fidelity.Willie's insights on federal workforce reforms emphasize a need for transparency and adherence to hiring procedures.Notable Quotes:"This is how we have agency loyalty and not loyalty to the Constitution or loyalty to a president or an administration. This is the swamp.""Pena's case is indicative of broader scrutiny under the Trump administration regarding federal workforce practices.""Nothing in my life has ever been handed to me.""Her removal follows allegations that her hiring skirted the standard procedure for converting political appointees into career federal employees.""This is problematic...Political appointees put people in place to protect the agency and not the agenda that the American people voted for."Resources:FightBackMedia.comWillie Lawson at FightBackMediaTV.comListeners are encouraged to tune into the full episode for a more comprehensive understanding of the intricate political issues discussed, as well as to stay informed about ongoing deveBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/morning-report--3694168/support.

Join the 1001 by 1 crew and Kieran B. from Best Picture Cast as they discuss Adrian Lyne's “Jacob's Ladder” and everything that encompasses it: Elizabeth Pena's character, Danny Aiello swinging for it, and whether or not Tim Robbins is a “good” actor. Also, this week Kieran recommends “Smile 2” (available on Paramount+ or PVOD), Joey recommends “Take Shelter” (available to rent on most major platforms), Adam recommends “Body Double” (currently on The Criterion Channel), and Britt recommends “Carnival of Souls”(free on Kanopy). I regularly hear from therapists who ask me questions about how to evaluate language in a way that gives detailed, meaningful, and accurate information. Most people know standardized tests only show a small fraction of what we need to know when it comes to language and cognition, yet many clinicians still don't consistently utilize a complete portfolio evaluation. A lot barriers get in the way, including:

A lot's changed since 1987: Biopics are much more common (and darker). Chicano artists are more mainstream, and Lou Diamond Phillips is a household name. So we acknowledge "La Bamba' was groundbreaking ... and not very good. Listener Mark C. commissioned this episode and the upcoming "American Me" to celebrate his heritage as a first-generation Hispanic-American. He noted the blockbuster soundtrack, janky lip-syncing and performances from Esai Morales, Joe Pantaliano and Elizabeth Pena. But Mark didn't prepare us for laughably large talismans, breakneck pacing and Ritchie Valens' "golly-gee" persona. In this episode, the Shat Crew debates whether Ritchie's brother, Bob, got a fair shake in the movie, what really happened that night in Tijuana and how much racism is appropriate for this story. Gene spots a Mystical Mexican. Ash yearns for some Buddy Holly, and Dick wants more details about the plane crash and aftermath. Kim tells Ket about another one of Arik's favorites that she feels mediocre about: Jacob's Ladder starring Tim Robbins and Elizabeth Pena. We learn that Ketryn's 80's kitchen ghost has returned with a new (familiar?) ear worm to implant in all of our brains and don't ever rely on Arik to help you in a haunted nighttime cat situation. Most importantly, we'll learn if Ket will live or die in Jacob's Ladder. Dir. Recently a Tip-Ster from Boston - "Tip-Ster Jennifer" - brought a case to Melissa's attention that she had not been aware of - the 1993 murders in Houston Texas of 14 year-old Jennifer Ertman and 16 year-old Elizabeth Pena. The facts of the case are among the most gruesome and disturbing Melissa has ever encountered - but more than the horror of the crimes themselves were two compelling side-stories...one is that Tip-Ster Jennifer was a friend of Jennifer Ertman at the time she was murdered...and the other is the awe-inspiring story of Jennifer Ertman's dad, Randy who, along with his wife and the family of Elizabeth Pena, waged a crusade not only to find the killers, but once they were caught, to change the laws to give victims' families higher standing in the judicial system - things we take for granted today like victim impact statements and the right for families to remain in the courtroom even when other family members are testifying. Tip-Ster Jennifer calls in from Boston on this episode to talk about the gut-punching details of the murders - and the heroic passion of the families left behind. The Dudes discuss 1996's "Lone Star", directed by John Sayles, starring Chris Cooper and Elizabeth Pena. This murder mystery, set in small town Texas, is a true master class in character driven cinema. You'll want to solve the case, reconcile with your past, and reconsider everything you know to be true. This episode of the podcast is going to be a little different than usual. As y'all know, Texas was rocked by Hurricane Harvey last week, particularly the Houston area — which happens to be where I live. That's why I thought I'd give y'all a look at my evacuation experience, as well as sharing the stories of a a couple EPIC employees whose families felt the wrath of Harvey. My goal is this: to highlight how, in the grand scheme of things, the problems we faced (and in some cases, are still facing) are minor inconveniences compared to so many others who have been left homeless or worse in the hurricane's wake. Unfortunately, such tragedy touched one of our very own EPIC Wolfpack. We'll hear from our founder Katie's mother, Terri as she shares an incredible story of courage and kindness. And to help make some sense of things and how we can all do our part to help out, I chat with Elizabeth Pena, Development Director for the Central Texas Food Bank. In addition to being our closest charitable partner, the food bank has been running at full steam collecting donations and getting aid to people in need.
In 1996, director John Sayles released a film set in a Texas bordertown about a town sheriff trying to piece together a 30-year-old mystery that was literally unearthed during a time of change. The film would major milestones for stars Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Pena and a then-unknown Matthew McConaughey, who would go on to be much bigger stars, while the film itself got lost in time. But did the film deserve such a fate? MovieDude Eric, Kent, and Chris investigate. The Pass is the last film we're reviewing for our audience choice month. It's a good thing too because much like the title of the film, it's exactly what we should have done instead of reviewing it.
