This week, Gene HackMarch continues with an outstanding acting showdown between two of the all-time greats of American screen acting, as our man Gene stands tete-a-tete with Denzel down in the briny deep with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. It's 1995's Crimson Tide, directed by Tony Scott, featuring script punch-up from Quentin Tarantino, and starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, George Dzundza, Matt Craven, Danny Nucci, Steve Zahn and Daniel von Bargen. A naval submarine thriller of the highest order, it's the first of five collaborations between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, and while it's easily the high water mark of the bunch it's also plain to see why they would be eager to re-team time and time again to try to recapture this magic. The acting showdown at the heart of this movie's conflict is its greatest spectacle, and while the movie got shut out at the Oscars come awards season, it was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, losing all three. Womp womp. Plus: Hayley's been to the cinema and is back with a theatrical field report on the new Bong, Mickey 17! And J Mo is hooked on The Traitors. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our conversation, Crimson Tide is available to stream on Disney+. Other works discussed on this episode include Snowpiercer, Okja, The Host, Poor Things, Mississippi Burning, The Rock, The Domino Principle, Big Brother, The Mole, Josie and the Pussycats, The Hunt For Red October, The Pelican Brief, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), Unstoppable, and Deja Vu among others. Gene HackMarch rolls on next week with 1974's The Conversation, though you can bet the Tony Scott talk with continue as we will surely be talking more about its 90s spiritual sequel (and Crimson Tide follow-up) Enemy of the State as well. The Conversation is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel, while Enemy of the State can be found on Disney+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week, SepTIMEber continues as we head back to 14th century France to launch real fireballs out of real trebuchets alongside real Montreal LARPers in a rare misstep from a true master of the popcorn flick. It's 2003's Timeline, directed by Richard Donner, based on the book by Michael Crichton, and starring Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, Anna Friel, Neal McDonough, Ethan Embry, Matt Craven, Michael Sheen, Lambert Wilson, Marton Csokas and Rossif Sutherland. Two movies into this theme month and we already be down bad with Stockholm Syndrome, as the dire straits of The Time Machine made this film look like an oasis in the desert comparatively. Alas, it is a deeply flawed flick to be sure, and for the very first time one of our hosts could not make it over the finish line. Plus: a bit of listener mail makes Hayley finally explain her longstanding beef with Ted Lasso. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, good luck! Despite being a Paramount movie, Timeline is not available on Paramount+ but is rentable on YouTube and the Cineplex app at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Rebel Ridge, Green Room, Blue Ruin, Kinds of Kindness, Poor Things, The Favourite, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Emperor's New Groove, Child's Play, M3GAN, English Teacher, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Almost Live!, Ready Player One, Backspot, I Like Movies, Sabrina Carpenter's album Short & Sweet, The Dana Carvey Show, Too Funny To Fail, 300, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Midnight in Paris, Pushing Daisies, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland, Geostorm, Superman II, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, Maverick, Radio Flyer, The 13th Warrior, Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow, Paycheck and The Perfect Score. We'll be back next week with a little ADHD-TPB, as SepTIMEber rolls on with a movie J Mo torrented off the internet roughly 15 years ago and never got around to actually watching: 1979's Time After Time, starring Malcolm McDowell and David Warner as H.G. Wells and Jack The Ripper respectively. Sounds like fun, right? Here's hoping! It is also not available on streaming, but once again is rentable on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
It's like Die Hard for kids but Patrick Stewart is there and it's also kinda like Hackers but... not as smart? Yes, it's 1997's Masterminds and Nathan and Brendan discussed it this week. While Brendan stans hard for Brenda Fricker, Nathan points out all the non-lethal violence in a movie with a whole lot of guns. They also discuss taxi radios, the insane opening hacking sequence, the lead character doing serial killer stuff and much more. Next week: A big nerd-fest full o' nerds. In The Life of David Gale, Kate Winslet is a reporter getting an exclusive scoop on the events that lead up to a man landing on death row. The catch? He has spent his entire career as an anti-death-row activist. Smells fishy, right? We were a little surprised by how swept up we were in this drama, as the whole movie is a race against time while Kate tries to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Co-starring with the always incredible Laura Linney, Kevin Spacey (whose character's actions certainly continue to not age well), and an opera-loving-always-lurking-cowboy (Matt Craven) - come along with us as we review this dark thriller/mystery/drama and find out how it ranks out of all 46 Kate Winslet films!WebsiteInstagramMerch Support the show

A few of the talking points that Arthur and Sean cover are mutation flirtation, James McAvoy donning some hair extensions, the movie completely wasting Darwin and his versatile ability, and the development that goes into Charles and Erik's character arcs and their clashing outlooks. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1995 American submarine film "Crimson Tide" directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The premise of the film concerns the clash of wills between the new executive officer and the commanding officer of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine at a time of political turmoil in the Russian Federation in which ultranationalists are threatening to launch nuclear missles at the United States and Japan. Gene Hackman plays Captain Frank Ramsey, the seasoned commanding officer of the U.S. Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, USS Alabama, which has been assigned to a patrol mission and ordered to be ready to launch its missiles in a pre-emptive strike if intelligence that the ultranationalists threatening to attack the U.S. and Japan report that the Russian dissidents appear to be fueling their missiles for a immediate attack. However, Captain Ramsey and his new executive officer, Commander Ron Hunter (played by Daniel Washington), have a difference of opinion in their interpretation of their orders, which leads to the crew of the Alabama to be divided in their allegiance to whom and to which conflicting orders they should follow. The film has a great cast of actors, such as: James Gandolfini, Viggo Mortensen, Matt Craven, George Dzundza, Rocky Carroll, as well as other great actors in some wonderfully memorable roles. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

You've been perfecting your interview technique for years. But what if you need a different interview skillset for board positions?! In today's episode, we're joined again by Matt Craven, an expert on career development. On previous episodes, Matt taught us about creating a board resume and developing your board brand. Today he shares how to succeed in board-level interviews. No one gets good at anything without coaching and practice. Think of sports, hobbies, and jobs - did anyone get good at those things through osmosis or did they seek out coaching and then practice, practice, practice?! How can you be good at something you've done only a hand full of times in your life? Matt's interview coaching services provide the coaching candidates need to become an accomplished interviewer!! In today's episode, Matt helps us think through executive-level interview technique, including What are the top mistakes executives make in an interview? What is the key to successful interviewing? How a candidate would answer certain questions such as “tell me about yourself!”, “if offered the position, what would be your strategy for the first 90- days?” and “do you have any questions for us?” This episode will provide actionable insights into how you can prepare for a board interview. We've all heard about the importance of an elevator pitch. But how much does it really matter? In today's episode, we're joined again by Matt Craven, a speaker on personal branding, thought-leadership, LinkedIn and career development. Matt explains that anyone aspiring to be a board member must focus on building their personal brand. That goes beyond just the elevator pitch. Your personal brand is how the world sees you. Fortunately, you have the ability to grow, shape, and enhance the image you present. Matt recommends you view yourself as a service provider. Concentrate on shifting your position from being a generalist to someone who speaks with authority about your industry. That will make you sought out for your expertise! In this way, you can carefully and intentionally build a platform. On that Boards will be seeking. To provide an example of how this works, during the episode, Matts offer constructive feedback on my LinkedIn profile. And I learned tons! Apparently, I hadn't been speaking to the needs of my target audience and wasn't explaining what I could offer them. (Fortunately, my revised LinkedIn profile is much stronger after Matt's insights!) Matt has generously offered the same complimentary LinkedIn critique to any of the Boardroom Bound tribe. You'll want to take advantage of this offer because, with the right profile, board roles will find you! Your revised profile can become the "pull" part of your board search process; this will dovetail with your "push" efforts: networking. You're going to find some many actionable insights from this episode! Including how to make immediate changes to your LinkedIn profile. Click here to listen now! Writing a board of directors resume is much the same as writing any other executive resume, right? NOT QUITE. Some individuals expect resumes to all follow a specific, prescribed format. And that might be true for entry-level and middle management jobs. But it's definitely not the resume version you'll use to apply for a Board role. Instead, you'll want to use a far more customized approach for writing a resume for a Board of Directors position. Fortunately, on today's show, our guest, Matt Craven, has all the answers. He's a personal branding and career development expert. His focus is on helping aspiring and existing Directors to sell themselves more effectively and secure more Board roles. Matt explains in great detail the methodologies he uses, including go-to-market descriptions and value proposition statements. He shares how it all starts with fixing your audience in your mind. Simply ask yourself: What will be most important to the nominating and governance committees that will be selecting and interviewing candidates to fill vacancies of the board of directors? And after walking us through the theory of how to craft a Board resume, Matt gets really practical by showing you. Matt spends the latter part of the episode critiquing my Board resume. Now, I felt good about my resume before the show started. But Matt founds lots of ways it could be improved. We knew this would be helpful -- to see the before and after versions. So we're making them both available. (See the links at the bottom.) I'm much more confident about my Board resume after Matt's careful (and gentle) feedback. Matt has generously offered to give the same complimentary resume critique to any of the Boardroom Bound tribe. You'll want to take advantage of this offer because one of the easiest ways to be passed over for a board position is by having a resume that reveals you might not yet know everything necessary to be inside the boardroom. I think this episode is going to be really helpful to you in your journey, so take a listen and use the guidance Matt shares to ensure you put your best foot (err, resume) forward. Melissa Sue Anderson was eager to break out of the house that Michael Landon built when she signed on for 1981's slasher Happy Birthday to Me. She was still screaming and crying but this time it was from trying to avoid being shish kebabbed by a mysterious killer and not from the trials of prairie life. She was joined by tough guy film legend Glenn Ford as her psychiatrist, Canadian stalwart Lawrence Dane as her preoccupied Dad, future soap superstar Tracey Bregman as her best friend and fledgling actors Lisa Langlois, Lesleh Donaldson, Matt Craven and David Eisner who would all go on to healthy careers. Dan and Vicky discuss Happy Birthday to Me's place in slasher history and how it's twisty and convoluted plot was a departure for the genre. They also take a look at the minor controversy that greeted the film when it premiered on DVD in 2005 and how the Canadian government's tax system of the era inadvertently gave rise to the beloved horror subgenre affectionately titled Canuxploitation. There's a tribute to the late Wes Craven, a look at the music of May 1981 (Sheena Easton and Kim Carnes lovers take note) and some Straight Out of Compton love. Hot Date 11: Happy Birthday to Me! You're all invited to Dan and Vicky's party! Blow out the candles and cut the cake.
