One of the big surprises of the late 2010's was the acquisition of Buchla and Associates by someone local to me: Eric Fox of Foxtone Music. I'd heard of Foxtone, but never visited, and never expected something like this to happen in good ‘ol Minneapolis. But sure enough, Buchla was now based out of the Twin Cities. While I'm not a Buchla user, I've always been fascinated by Don Buchla's work, and I was interested in this new iteration of Buchla – especially given the recent announcement of the official Tiptop 200-series modules, along with the revamp of the Easel that was shown at Superbooth. There was no time like now to reach out to Eric for a chat. Our discussion is pretty interesting: from his start as a punk guitarist, to his entre into music retailing, and finally landing on synthesizers as his ticket, Eric hasn't ever taken the easy road. But through perseverance, and a willingness to be “that irritating guy”, he has created a place – not only in music retailing, but in synthesizer history. See what Eric is up to by checking out the Buchla website: https://buchla.com/ Enjoy! We made it to Episode 39 of the Behind the Golf Brand Podcast.  In this week's episode, I interview my friends Scott Kovesdy and Eric Fox, the Founders of Desert Fox Golf. The Phone Caddy from Desert Fox Golf is a great idea that delivers on everything the new age of golf is asking for. Players continue to take more and more devices to the course and golf carts continue to expand their options for cell phone applications. Golfers that use their phone for anything on the golf course should be making sure they take care of their device and make it as easy as possible to focus on their games and scores and the Desert Fox Golf Phone Caddy can help in both of those areas.Support the show (https://legiongolf.co/)

“You never really know how much people are willing to do or are prepared or want to help until it’s needed.” Eric Fox on DADicated.com (Eric’s daughter went through a long coma, wasn’t breathing on her own for the first five weeks and she had a 3% chance of survival). Eric Fox is a stay-at-home Dad of two, married since 1999, living in Dubai. In 2015 his wife Krysta was diagnosed with breast cancer but has now recovered. In November 2017, right after Krysta’s chemo, Chloe, his daughter, was involved in a near fatal road accident resulting in a coma for weeks on end with a 3% chance of living. Luckily she is well on the way to recovery. In our session Eric opens up about the strain the situation brought to their marriage and how they managed to turn their relationship around. Eric shares how he managed to deal with the feelings and fears throughout his wife’s and daughter’s fight for recovery. We talk about his situation as a stay-at-home dad, how the family deals with all of this. Eric also shares how Matthew, his son, dealt with his sister’s accident at the time. The most powerful takeaways for me as a dad where: Always oblige when your kids want to spend time, you can’t get that opportunity back. Make sure your children understand that they can never disappoint you. No matter what happens. Check-in on the best, worst and funniest every night over dinner with everyone. Schedule important conversations with your wife and don’t try them when you’re exhausted or the kids are screaming. If your friends need your help, be the first to raise your hand. “Bring clarity to discussions. Say what it is that you want to say and also work out how you want to receive information.“ On a personal note: South Africa’s Covid-19 lockdown has brought the economy near collapse and people are starving. If you, as many, love Cape Town and its people, please do check out our initiative www.togetherforcapetown.com and donate. Our aim is to provide 3.000.000 meals to children in Cape Town’s townships before the year is out. Thank you! Beautiful quote by Eric Fox: “When things became extremely difficult communication or the lack thereof became crucial.” Thank you for listening and sharing this episode of dadicated.com. If you like it, please consider leaving a review, truly appreciated. So I apologize for any confusing anachronisms. That said, I don't think the poor timing on my part detracts from the content that Nick brought to this conversation. If you're not familiar with Nick, here is his bio: Dr. Berens received his Ph.D. in behavior analysis from the University of Nevada under the supervision of Dr. Steven Hayes. He has served on several professional boards including the Standard Celeration Society, Nevada Association for Behavior Analysis, and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science’s education special interest group.  Berens is an experienced applied researcher and has published and presented in the areas of core behavioral process related to language and development, the merits of the scientist practitioner model, Relational Frame Theory, Precision Teaching, and program evaluation. He has spent the last 10 years researching and developing the Fit Learning system of instruction.  This system targets areas such as basic classroom readiness, core processing speed, phonemic awareness, reading fluency, reading comprehension, language-based comprehension, basic and advanced mathematics, grammar, expressive writing, logic, problem solving, and Executive Functioning.  He and the Fit Learning team have implemented the system with over 1,000 children ages 3-18 years old.  These children have presented with a variety of skill levels and diagnoses including children diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, learning disabilities including AD/HD, Dyslexia, Dygraphia, Dyscalcula, Auditory Processing Disorder, Non-Verbal Learning Disorder, and struggling learners, as well as, gifted students.  The Fit Learning system has consistently been shown to produce one year’s growth in 8-weeks. Nick in deep thought... ... and if the name Berens sounds familiar, in Session 44, I spoke with his better half as it were, Dr. Kim Berens, who described how Fit Learning was founded and what it's evolved into today. In this episode, Nick discussed the role of Relational Frame Theory as it relates to the work that they do at Fit Learning. As Steve did, Nick makes the case that derived relational responses are operants that are critical to language development. Likewise, we take a minute to discuss objections to RFT, and what he thinks about those who remain skeptical of this approach to understanding language development (and for those who are a little tired of all this ACT/RFT stuff, we'll have some other topics featured over the next few episodes). We didn't get too heavy into references, but Nick did suggest a few resources for folks to look into if they want to learn more: Dr. Eric Fox's online RFT tutorial. Learning RFT: An introduction to Relational Frame Theory and its Clinical Application, by Niklas Torneke, MD. And here are some of the publications by the Fit team Nick mentioned: School, Meds, and Moms- Using the Standard Celeration Chart for a Contextual Analysis of Behavior Putting the Precision in Precision Teaching- Using the Standard Celeration Chart for Ongoing Assessment Discovery Through the Lens of the Standard Celeraton Chart- Informing and Facilitating Inductive Intervention Strategies Assessing Functional Relations- The Utility of the Standard Celeration Chart I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

This week, I've got another diverse array of guests from Trail Days in Damascus a few weeks ago. While I guess a parade of hikers could have been interviewed, I preferred to go with others associated with the Appalachian Trail, so I've managed to get another interesting mix together.   Dan Bedore is hiking a kind of alternative AT, keeping the pioneering spirit of the trail alive by spending large amounts of time totally by himself. He said that he preferred it that way. When I checked his website, bedore.org, I was amazed at the variety of trails that he has completed. For those of you wishing to go a little off the beaten track, Dan's site is a good place to start. You can reach out to Dan at danshike@yahoo.com if you'd like to find out more about his journeys.   Next, I spoke with the first of the vendors this week. One of the Jacks, of Jacks R Better, demonstrated the Bear Mountain Bridge Hammock, based upon the design of a suspension bridge. It provides a flat sleeping surface. I was a little doubtful, but it was terrific. Had I seen this in 2014, I may have even considered a hammock. You can find out more about the company at the Jacks R Better website and this video demonstrates the setup of the hammock.   Eric Fox, the son of Alison and Bob Fox, hiked the AT a couple of years back. Bob wrote Eric's story for him, in a really interesting family collaboration, called The Endless Trail. Check out the book on Amazon. You can also see more about the book at Bob's website and Facebook page. Click on the appropriate link. Here's a picture of the two of us.     Kyle Jeffreys introduced me to a very reasonably priced air pad. The company is Klymit, and I highly recommend their website. I tried out the Static V2. At just over $60, it is a bargain and extremely comfortable. The website will give you far more information, as well as some really excellent deals for somebody putting together a bunch of equipment from one supplier. Once again, click on the link that appeals to you.   Moe Lemire is a hiker who wanted to give back. Instead of just talking about it, he joined the NY-NJ Trail Conference, responsible for more than 50 miles of the AT in these two states. If you're from that area, or simply want to see the great work that Moe and his team do, check out their website.   Eddie Hinnant was showing us The Packa, his very own invention, at Trail Days. He demonstrated his combination pack cover and jacket with the fervor of a man who knows he has done good work. Let Eddie himself show you in this video. If you want to learn more, go to Eddie's website.   Lisa Quigley, representing the Virginia Creeper Trail, told us as much as she could in the few minutes we spoke. If you'd like to learn more, you can see their pretty website or even their Facebook page.   Finally, Dave Degler was kind enough to talk to me about the work of A Christian Ministry in the National Parks. I was so impressed with Dave and his charming team, three of whom are hiking the trail this year. If you'd like to learn more about the extensive outreach that they do, visit their website.   I hope that you enjoyed meeting some of the people at Trail Days. I'm really glad that I went, and I PROMISE, the audio quality of outdoor recordings will improve if I do this again!!   Charlotte Taney, a previous guest, was originally unsure about any concerns that she may have had prior to starting the AT. On reflection, however, it turned out that she had a few for this week's Fear and Loathing on the Appalachian Trail.   Attie seems right back into it, so we're both looking longer term than we had in previous weeks. I can't tell you how delighted I am. I also know that I posted this picture a few weeks ago, but I wanted a Trail Days picture to go with the podcast on Facebook and this turns out to be it.     One last thing.   If you've read any of my three books and you HAVEN'T left a review, please do me a big favor and click on the appropriate link below to take you directly to the review page of that book. Thanks so much.   My Appalachian Trial I: Three Weddings and a Sabbatical   My Appalachian Trial II: Creaking Geezer, Hidden Flagon   Hiking the Appalachian Trail is Easy: Especially if You've Never Hiked Before.   By the way, remember that this last book is free at my author's website, though I won't be in the least bit offended if you want to pay me $2.99 for it!!
