Fashion Besties, we're back with CHIC fashion and style inspo; just for you. The Fashion Crimes Podcast has stylishly got your back, each and every week. hosted by the only Holly you need to know, and certified style expert. This week, we are discussing “How To Create Chic Outfits” What constitutes a chic outfit, you say? We're so glad you asked. Don't forget to follow along on our Pinterest board – and let's make chic happen together! Key Talking Points 1. What Does “Chic” Mean? o Chic does NOT have to mean expensive designer labels—it's about simplicity, elegance, and dressing with intention. o Holly explains that chic style can include timeless, well-fitted pieces and thoughtful combinations of accessories. Think tailored blazers, polished denim, and structured handbags that speak to quiet luxury. o Example: A well-tailored black blazer paired with high-quality denim, a crisp white blouse, and a statement necklace can make you look put-together at any budget. 2. Building Your Chic Wardrobe o Invest in timeless, versatile staples that you can mix and match for any occasion. o Holly shares her non-negotiable must-haves: blazers, versatile dresses, classic trousers, and high-quality knitwear like cashmere. o Example: A little black dress isn't just for funerals—it's a wardrobe superhero that can be dressed up for formal events or dressed down with sneakers for a casual day out. 3. The Art of Fit and Tailoring o Fit is everything. Your clothes should look like they were made just for you, and tailoring can and will make that happen. o Example: A blazer that fits perfectly at the shoulders and waist instantly elevates any outfit, while pants tailored to your specific inseam will totally make your clothes look like they were made just for you. 4. Accessorize with Intention o Accessories are the secret to taking a basic outfit and making it chic. Try mixing high-end costume jewelry with real pieces and adding structured handbags, scarves, and well-maintained shoes. o Example: Tying a silk scarf around the handles of your handbag or layering delicate gold necklaces over a simple blouse can instantly add sophistication and personality. Encouraging Message from Holly Fabulous women over 40—remember, creating chic outfits is a way to create timeless looks you can wear for several seasons. Rivian has quoted several of our Community members $400 to remove and reinstall aftermarket accessories so that they can perform work on their Rivian. Is this fair? Rivian has also added verbiage to their Warranty Guide stating that, “…damage or the malfunction of the vehicle or any of its component parts is not covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty when caused by the following: - Using or installing parts or performing modifications not approved by Rivian. …” This is in direct conflict with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, which states that, “Warranties cannot be voided merely due to the use of aftermarket parts or services. Manufacturers are required to prove that the non-original part or service was the direct cause of the defect to deny warranty claims.” Check out this link. https://www.autocare.org/docs/default... Did you know that it's the 150th Anniversary of Levi's 501 jeans? We are betting that no matter how old you are right now as you listen to this podcast, you probably went through an era of wearing the iconic 5-button-fly, unisex classic style. AMIRITE!? These jeans date all the way back to 1873. The original 501 jeans by Levi's have stayed true and timeless for well over 150 years. And they're not stopping anytime soon. From rebels to rockstars to factory and millworkers and farmers alike, 501 jeans have been a staple for everyone. In fact, 501 jeans just get cooler and hipper, the older and more worn they appear. Throughout their history, there was no social class, gender, religion, or creed that 501's did not fit. So, when you wear 501s, you are not pigeonholed into any demographic other than being part of Levi's revolution - and what a revolution it is. The style is still true today to the original 501 core values of price, craftsmanship, and durability. And it's now coupled with Levi's modern sustainability efforts. We mean, you literally cannot destroy these things! THE HISTORY: 501 jeans are the oldest style of the Levi's brand. Back in the late 19th century miners and factory workers needed a pant that was sustainable enough to withstand the harsh elements, in addition to keeping their shape and durability over time. Levi Strauss was a Jewish immigrant who sailed to New York City in pursuit of the American dream from Bavaria, Germany. He joined his family in the dry goods business where he was selling what was called “waist overalls,” which was the name for denim pants. He then worked with a tailor from Reno, NV who added copper rivets to reinforcement to the pocket corners. From there, they were awarded a patent for the process of adding the rivets and started to manufacture them in San Francisco, where Strauss was living. Eventually, ladies and children's styles followed, but it wasn't until the 1960s that baby boomers adopted the name “jeans.” LEVI's TODAY: Today, the company boasts a collection of over 400 styles and rinses (colors). The Levi's company is using its birthday to bring forth its efforts on becoming more sustainable and use less energy and water to produce and dye their products. Expect to hear about the release of the plant-based 501s that are made from 97% renewable resources. Now, we don't even know what that means, but we're gonna find out because Holly is gonna get a pair and we are going to learn about this company and its practices! #Yay! HOT TIP: Please look up all of the work Levi's has done to help make the planet a better place! We didn't know how extensive it has been, and now that we do, we love them even more. WHAT JEANS ARE BEST FOR YOU? Obviously: FIT IS FIRST. Not a price point. The 5 Factors: the rise, stretch factor, support, rinse, and price. Don't go by inseam. Most of the time, jeans will be too long. (Note: check out Holly's Pinterest board for all of the recommendations on this episode at: https://pin.it/7fyf8ip) THE RISE: The rise is the distance from your crotch up through your seat to the top of your waistband. So, if you go in between your legs, it is at that point where all of the panels connect. The rise determines where the pants sit on your body and can create, or alter, where your perceived waistline is. You will see “high rise,” “low rise” and everything in between. Based on your body type, the “rise” you choose depends on the fit you are looking for. The Brands Holly Recommends: Mother: https://www.motherdenim.com/collections/denim L'Agence: https://lagence.com/collections/denim Frame: https://frame-store.com/collections/denim-women Paige: https://www.paige.com/women?filters=%7B%22PRODUCT%20TYPE%22:%5B%22DENIM%22%5D%7D&page=1 Rag and Bone: https://www.rag-bone.com/womens/jeans/ Guess: https://www.guess.com/us/en/women/apparel/jeans-and-denim/view-all/ NYDJ: https://nydj.com/collections/nydjs-women-jeans Wranglers: https://www.wrangler.com/shop/women-jeans Levi's: https://www.levi.com/US/en_US/clothing/women/jeans/c/levi_clothing_women_jeans HOT TIP: Do not get hung up on what style is in style. If skinny jeans are your best fit, wear them forever. What jean fit your body best never go out of style. WHAT TO WEAR WITH JEANS: Any. Thing. Jeans are the new black. They are high fashion. They are low fashion. They are high-low fashion. That is what makes them fabulous and acceptable in most places these days. And, you can never have too many, or too few. But they are a staple, and you need to have some. Style them with everything from cowboy boots to sandals. Dress them up with a nice top and jacket or be fun with a rock-n-roll T-shirt. BOTTOM LINE: Style your jeans up: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorizes. A nice handbag, killer shoes, and statement jewelry can transform any jean into a stylish outfit. Go forth and have fun with your jeans- send us a pic of how you styled them so you can get a shout-out! VOTE FOR US! After a spectacular week of celebrating our 150th Episode last week, we are back this week to brag about the publication of Holly's fashion advice recently featured on The Today Show website: Best Linen Pants for Summer! READ IT HERE: https://www.today.com/shop/best-linen-pants-rcna91136 #yyyaasasssss Believe it or not, Holly has not previously owned linen pants. #ummno This is not surprising for those of us that live in Southern states – because - linen gets wrinkly before you can even start THINKING about wearing it. #Facts #Ugh However, in doing research for this article, Holly was happy to find ‘linen-blend” options that she has totally warmed up to, and is now recommending. And, in the spirit of summer fashion, we are throwing in summer T-shirts, and even recommending appropriate summer flip flops on this episode (even though your favorite personal stylist may or may not have totally bashed this shoe option in a previous episode)! #Weeeeeee #LookNoHands! Summer Linens: Every summer, your social feeds are flooded with dreamy linen clothing options: White linen pants, linen shirt dresses, linen button-down shirts, etc. It all looks super cool, refreshing, flowy and fun - until you buy something and dare to try it on, let alone wear it somewhere and try not to get wrinkled. You can hand-steam all you want, besties. This stuff will look like you've been sleeping in it for week the second you get dressed. #damn So, if you want the linen look, and not the sloppy, lived-in look, Holly has your summer style tips all lined up for you here! HOT TIP: Please go to the HOLLY KATZ STYLING Pinterest board to follow along visually: https://www.pinterest.com/hollykatzstyling/top-t-shirts-flip-flop-linen-pants-for-2023/ LINEN PANTS Repeat after Holly: Linen-blend is your summer friend, not your enemy. You can wear linen pants! Regular linen is made of untreated, natural fibers that have not been bleached, colored, or treated in some way. So, there is nothing to keep it from wrinkling or to help it keep its shape. By finding a linen-blend, you will have a fabric that supports the linen look and feel, with minimal wrinkles. HOT TIP: Linen pants, especially white linen pants, can tend to be sheer and see through. Make sure your pants fit well, (the linen look is loose-fitting), and please do not tell us you are wearing a thong panty without telling us you are wearing a thong panty, because your pants are see through. #Pleasecheck Holly recommends sizing up when trying linen pants. Also, be careful how you clean your linen – an easy fabric to shrink! Choose your linens wisely-here are the linen pant brands Holly recommends: All on the pinterest board! Mill & Moss Posse Banana Republic Vince Free People Frank & Eileen & Other Stories A.L.C. T-SHIRTS Holly likes to classify T-shirts into these 3 categories: 1.) Solids: You do not need a T-shirt in every color. However, a crisp white T is always in style. Then you can add to your collection from there with a pop of color, or a muted neutral. Solid T-shirts are the FOUNDATION of your summer outfits. You will want to accessorize and dress it up from there. 2.) Vintage and Graphic: It is always on trend to wear any sort of vintage T-shirt, as long as it is in good condition- (think concert T-shirts, vintage brand or team shirts). This is a great option for collectors, or for those on a budget. Good condition means no rips, tears, smells, or stains. We can't believe we need to say that, but you'd be shocked. All 2nd hand and vintage tees need to be washed before wearing. 3.) College and Sport Teams: These types of casual T-shirts are a Fashion Crime - UNLESS you are attending or participating in “said” event. This is where you can wear your swag, fly your flag and sport your team socks-but at the game and the game only. It's not chic to wear college alumni shirts, sorority and fraternity letters, your high school baseball team shirt, etc. when you're not at the specified function that supports this type clothing. #thankyou T-shirt brands Holly recommends: Groceries Apparel JCrew Harvest & Mill Neococo Katla Oldschooltees Generation Cool How to wear: Accessorize your T-shirts with statement jewelry, a great handbag, a detachable collar, or just fabulous glam sunglasses. Wear under a jacket, blazer, jumpsuit, or sundress – anything sleeveless! Wearing a vintage tee with a maxi skirt is Holly's go-to look. Do not go cheap on T-shirts. There is a huge difference in fit and quality if you purchase in a ‘Box Store” vs. a higher-level brand. Be honest with yourself – if this is an item you wear constantly in your wardrobe, do yourself a favor and spend some money on quality fabric and fit. You won't regret it! T-shirts should be snug and not oversized. Make sure the fabric isn't too sheer! If we see nipplige or problem areas, the fit is too tight. #FashionOver40 FLIP FLOPS: Okay, you didn't hear it from Holly, but flip-flops are something she grew up with like the rest of us. What was once a $2 piece of rubber that you put on your feet, has now turned into items that luxury brands can sell for hundreds of dollars. Please take note that there are two kinds of flip flops: the ones that are rubber and cheap that you throw into your car when you need to get a pedicure and nice leather or designer ones that you wear in the summer. How to wear Flip Flops: We would like to explain, with your permission, the do's and don'ts of flip flops. Please do not, under any circumstances or for any reason, OR at any time or place on this planet, in this point of your life, wear flip flops with arch support. #oldladyflipflops This is a Fashion Crime: you are too fabulous at this point to walk around or stand all day in platform flip-flops. You know this, we know this, tell your friends this. Cheap, flat, rubber flip-flops are for the pool and the beach. That's it. However, you can find lovely slip-ons and other sandals that will keep you cool in the dead of summer without looking sloppy or cheap. Dressy slip-on shoes and designer flip-flps go perfectly with shorts, short skirts, sundresses and dressy white jeans. Holly Favorite Flip Flop Brands: tkees kate spade havianas rainbows gucci valentino sophia webster If you do it right, your go-to summer outfit can be as easy as flowy linen-blend pants paired with a classy T-shirt, accessories, and fabulous slip-on sandals or designer flops. And how can you finally accessorize your home with confidence so you get that designer look?Styling and accessorizing is the last, but really important, step in the design process. What to listen for in this episode:Skipping styling and accessorizing is like running a marathon and stopping a few miles short of the finish lineHow to use "threes" in your designWhat shape you need to remember when styling and accessorizing your roomsWhy the numbers 60/30/10 are important in your roomShow notes:Episode 13Connect with Sally:Follow on PinterestFollow on InstagramWebsitehttps://nestorations.com/podcast

It's here: “Best-Dressed Wedding Guest, Part 2!” Because our original episode “Best-Dressed Wedding Guest, Part 1,” has gotten the most downloads of any episode EVER! So, we are back to give you even MORE insider information about how to be the best dressed at your next wedding event. (P.S. If you miss the memo on Part 1, please go back to Episode 84. You won't be sorry!) Get the new Part 2 episode now HERE! Ok, to start: Regardless of what type of wedding you attend, let's just start off by repeating the mantra that Holly uses daily with clients: “It never hurts to be the best looking one in the room.” Let's say it together now this way: “It never hurts to be the best looking one in the room by being the best dressed one in that room.” First, let's go over the foundation of getting yourself together for such an occasion. Details include the following: the dress, shoes, makeup, hair, nails, jewelry, handbag, and a zhush. As always, before we start on the details, in order to help you with the visuals, please jump over to Holly's Pinterest to see this episode's featured recommendations. The DRESS. The 3 Things You Need to Shop For: The Cut: which can also mean the silhouette of the dress or the shape of the dress. This is the first thing the very first, and we mean the Number One thing, that you look for when buying a dress. You're not shopping for price. And you're not shopping for color. You are shopping for fit first, which means you know your body type, and you know what type of dress shape you are looking for. The Fabric: If you are not in a store touching the fabric, then you need to read the product details and reviews on the website. It is best if you can feel the fabric to know if it has the right drape, stretch and construction for your body type. The Length: Micro Mini, Mini, Midi, and Maxi. Please dress for your age and cover your ass. Thank You! (See a graphic design of what I mean exactly about dress length here.) SHOES: A wedding is a special event. Wear something special. Not flats. Not tennis shoes. Not even kitten heels. You need to suck it up and suffer and wear nice a high heel. Heels come in all varieties, so you CAN find an elegant, elevated heel that is bearable for a few hours. Try a fancy wedge heel, or a fun block heel. There are options. However, do not ruin your best shoes for any event. If you are at an outdoor wedding (not Holly's favorite venue), then find a shoe that won't be ruined if you get stuck in the mud. Plan and shop based on the wedding venue. Brands We Love: Vince Camuto Nine West Sam Edelman Valentino Manolo Blahnik Neiman Marcus Shoe Department Holly's Pinterest Board The HANDBAG: Every woman should have three bags: A Boss Bitch Bag (something that you can fit your laptop in for work and carry to work). A medium-sized bag (not some grandma bag with a ton of pockets), that is something sleek and chic and current. A clutch bag you know, obviously is slimmer and smaller, that might have a chain or not. Do not bring a medium size bag to a wedding. Do not bring your everyday bag to a wedding. Don't do it. Get your ass a clutch bag. Something fancy. We don't care if it's $12 or $1,200, you can find a perfectly acceptable small bag anywhere that will be dressier for nighttime. (GO TO EPISODE 70 FOR “HOW TO BUY A HANDBAG”) THE JEWELRY: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. This is the way to bring your outfit up to that ‘dressed-up' or ‘best-dressed” level. Get some fabulous statement earrings. Clean up your nice stuff so it sparkles. Mix metals! Mix your costume with your real. But please. Please. Please do not wear your Apple Watch to a wedding. If you do, fashion alarms will be sounded, and you will be pointed out in humiliation. This is a #FASHIONCRIME. I will hunt you down and find you. Jewelry Brands We Love: Julie Lamb New York Amanda Pearl The ZHUZH: A ‘zhuzh' is something that adds that one last level of ‘bling' or ‘zing' or ‘ta-dah' moment. This can be your jewelry, a pashmina, your handbag, your nail polish. However, it better not ever, ever be a puffer coat over your wedding outfit. You have been warned. Okay, that's the secret! Make sure you wear enough to make it look special. And make your outfit look dressy and not for every day. That's the key to wearing something special: it's something that you don't wear every day. Try to look stand out! You be the judge of what's best for you. Holly is just here to light a little fire under your boots. Do something different. The truth: Less is less. More is more. We want you to be the best dress wedding guest! And guess what? You're gonna be, mkay, because we put that in the universe for you. You are welcome! Get the new episode now HERE! Our Fashion Friends wanted to know: How does a woman of a certain age wear shorts? It's too cold in the Northeast; it's spring in the South. How does a girl style shorts – and more importantly, should she? Your favorite personal stylist Holly Katz recently received a styling request (who even knew that was a thing, but it is now!!) from a dedicated fashion friend - and we are here to answer it: How To Wear Shorts? Get the latest episode here: https://apple.co/2XXKHfC Obviously we all ‘know' how to wear shorts. You put one foot in, you put the other foot in… But at a certain point in a woman's life, or in a specific season, are shorts a Fashion Crime or not? Well, it depends. Like many women, Holly was a bit self-conscious about her legs and showing them off in shorts until HER personal stylist, and our fairy gay mother, Nolan Meader told her she was being RIDICULOUS. There are many ways to wear this very stylish and comfortable item that can work for all ages, all body types and all seasons. What Holly loves about shorts is that they can be super casual or super dressy, depending on how you coordinate everything together. The type of shoes, accessories, and legwear you add to the mix can make all the difference. And yes, you can totally wear shorts in the winter and year ‘round. Now before we go any further, everything we are talking about on this episode has been posted on Holly's Pinterest board called “Holly's Hot Picks, Spring Shorts.” To help visualize this conversation, go to https://www.pinterest.com/hollykatzstyling/hollys-hot-pics-spring-shorts What are the different types of shorts? If this is a trend you would like to try, we always have to go back to the drawing board and figure out what your body type is - and what type of shorts will look best on you. The type of shorts that will look best on you will probably not look best on someone else. Denim shorts High-waisted shorts Bermuda shorts, which are longer Linen, silk or fine-knit shorts Work-out shorts High-rise shorts And the list goes on and on Which shorts are right for you? Here is your free fashion tip: Short-shorts are a Fashion Crime for most humans. Short-shorts are NOT appropriate for anyone, unless you are 6-feet tall and 19 years old. Write this down for anyone who might need to know this. How to style shorts so you can wear them year-round: Find shorts that fit your body type, and a length that accentuates your legs. High-waisted shorts or shorts with a belt to help draw your waistline in. Add a short jacket, a ‘shacket,' a cardigan or a kimono to dress up your shorts. Add a heel or boot to give your legs length. Wear very on-trend stockings that are opaque for winter, or with patterns to hide you flaws. We recommend our BFFF Vienne Milano stockings to add sophisticated style to any short. www.viennemilano.com. Wear a chunky sweater or sweatshirt over shorts in the winter. Try our BFFF tie-dye designer for super fun sweatshirt ideas at www.madebykeeper.com. Wear a glam bodysuit under shorts to dress them up. Accessorize with statement jewelry or mixed-metal jewelry. See our BFFF Criscara Jewelry for layering ideas and truly unique and fun pieces. www.criscara.com Choose the price point and quality of fabric you need to look your best. Linen is lovely, until it shows every bit of your bumps and cellulite. Faux-leather is on-trend, very forgiving and totally comfortable! Wear denim shorts – if you must – over your swimsuit at the beach. Very appropriate and practical. Don't be afraid of your legs. As Holly always says, “The first step is awareness.” Know your body type. Dress for the season. Accessorize. Cover your butt. Do you have fashion questions? Does your dog lose its mind when Saturday morning rolls around and you start vacuuming your home? Is your cat in an endless power struggle with your Roomba? Well, turns out you have two people to blame for that...and today we're finding out how much their vacuum wars sucked. In the battle to create the first vacuum, it was actually a battle of accessorizing. Who could help you reach high places? Could this attachment reach under the couch? Are there different settings for hardwood or carpet? Accessories are everything when it comes to creating the perfect vacuum. But that's true for products across the board. “Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have you'll never, ever have enough.” - Oprah What you wear on Thanksgiving Day can help you determine what kind of day you have. While it's not about the clothes, it's about HOW the clothes make you feel – relaxed rather than uptight; calm versus chaotic; and fabulous rather than frumpy. There are many things that go into a family dinner, and wearing something that can help you to flex your superpowers of staying calm in the midst of a storm goes a long way towards creating a day that's memorable for all the right reasons. You've ordered your turkey, planned your menu and are prepping for guests. But have you planned your outfit? A good Thanksgiving outfit should accomplish three things: help you to feel confident feel comfortable no matter what you eat and – most importantly – help to ground you so that you stay calm, cool and collected no matter what meltdowns are happening around you. Juggling multiple sides, relatives running late, your husband burning the turkey, a spat between your siblings, Uncle G. arriving a bit tipsy….many things can go wrong on a day that is meant to express our gratitude. Your clothes can be like armor, providing a source of comfort and protection against all the outside influences around you. You may not be able to control what happens around you, but you can control how you feel – and that starts with feeling confident, comfortable and grounded in your clothes. Here's how: 1/ Choose something you LOVE! It's no secret that when you wear something you love, it just makes you feel good! It helps you to be more connected to who you are and boosts your confidence like crazy. This confidence will carry you through the day and remind you of the amazing woman you are – thereby potentially preventing you from losing your cool when your in-laws arrive and demand that their dishes take up the entire oven. 2/ Pants that you can eat in As one of our models recently proclaimed about her new favorite pair of pants, “I can eat in these.” This is your mantra. Some of our picks include leggings and jeans from Liverpool that are so comfy we can do yoga in them – and that will NOT leave you having to unbutton after that second piece of pie. 3/ Accessorize with Ease Adding in just the right necklace, earrings or scarf will take your look to new heights while keeping things simple and understated. Thanksgiving is not the time to pile on the accessories, so a little goes a long way. 4/ Layers Being indoors with a group of people means the temperature will probably fluctuate. Wearing layers allows you to be prepared for lounging in front of a roaring fire, stepping outside on the deck or enjoying an afternoon stroll with ease. This is NOT the time to wear your fleece lined leggings or your heaviest sweater. Think light layers that give you options and you'll be much less grumpy than if you had to suffer in silence. 5/ Footloose and Fancy Free I'll admit I'm not a big fan of wearing shoes in the house, so I'll most likely be barefoot on Thanksgiving day. If you're the hostess, you could consider wearing some cute slippers or mules that look chic but can easily slip off if you desire. If you're a guest, choose something low-key for a meal at home rather than your over-the-knee boots or your spiky heels. I'm a big fan of low-heeled or wedge booties, athleisure sneakers, flats or mid-calf boots. Be sure to wear cute socks in case you want to take them off! With these tips you're bound to master your Thanksgiving outfit in no time flat! Feeling good means you have more time to enjoy those around you and to focus on why you're actually together in the first place. Take time to give thanks for those you love AND for the amazing woman that YOU have become. You've got this! Bon appetit.
