This week on Black & Published, Nikesha speaks with Hana Baba the storyteller on the new podcast Folk Tales from Sudan. The first season will feature 10 stories Hana grew up hearing from her uncle, but was uncertain if she should or could step into his role behind the mic. A radio journalist by trade, Hana fell in love with voice, how it could emote, and its expressiveness at an early age though she grapples with what it means to take ownership of oral traditions. Why she's resisting the urge to profit from her heritage. Plus, the reason she believes her stories are a gift to the next generation of Sudanese children on the continent and across the diaspora. And how the current national and geopolitical climate influenced her decision to curate, produce, and distribute these stories, but now also endanger their future existence and proliferation. Mentioned in this episode:Rate & ReviewThanks for listening, family! Please do us a solid and take a quick moment to rate and/or leave a review for this podcast. Folktales are traditions, culture and stories passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation. We all have heard one form of folktale or another. Vampires, werewolves, and mermaids are some just to name a few! But what place do they have in a world of fantasy and magic?---------------Music provided by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0Music also provided by Monument Studios

This is a story about a powerful god, a curious human, and the lessons we can learn about respecting nature. Are you ready for an adventure full of wonder and wisdom? Let's begin!
“This generation of storytellers are ageing. Our elders are ageing. I am the one who needs to start this preservation process — at least in my family,” says Hana Baba, a Sudanese-American journalist and podcaster. Her new podcast, Folktales from Sudan, brings ancient Arabic fables to life in English for the first time. It's aimed at young people in the diaspora who may not speak the language or have lost their connection to Sudanese traditions. As conflict continues to devastate Sudan and displace millions, Hana believes there's an urgent need to preserve the stories, humour, and wisdom of her culture, and pass it on to the next generation.

Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Remote Creativity: How life on SW Ireland's wild Atlantic coast and the surrounding natural world shape his work. Flow Stitching: His distinctive, freeform stitching style that tells a narrative as it evolves. Seamus O'Comanssy – The Creative Proxy: The story behind his character Seamus and how it bridges his passion for travel and art, sharing creativity and interesting insights into other people's creative lives. Narrative & Folklore: Drawing on Irish oral traditions and global folk tales to imbue his work with hidden meanings. Welcome back to The Freaky Deaky, friends and fiends, this week we're diving into part one of what is sure to be an ongoing foray into the realm of little folk. I've spent a great deal of time combing through cultures all over the world, and was absolutely astounded by the sheer volume of lore that surrounds these beings. It seems that practically every single culture around the globe has some kind of intriguing tale about little people. In part one we'll be taking a peek into the Duendes of the Philippines, The Aluxes of Mayan culture and Leprechauns and fairies from the Celtic side of things. Stay tuned til the end for a glimpse into which cultures we'll be looking into next week in Part 2. I can honestly see this being upwards of a 10 part series in the future. There is truly so many different names for these entities, and a lot of them bare some striking similarities. It'll be fun to unravel over time. In this special Folktales episode, we decided to give you something different in the form of FIVE stories that we read to you for the first time on the spot! and ngl, they are a little… middle-fingery. But hey, that's the dice you roll when you play the game of folktalesStory 1: Domingo's Cat In this one, we find a fiscal feline who is both a work horse and giver. The cat can talk, has a magic hole, and trolls bacon (you'll get it when you listen), all normal Brazilian cat stuff. Story 2: Sweet Porridge WHATS ANOTHER WORD FOR ‘STOP'?!? Like, for real. What else do you say in this situation? Anyways. Always take a little pot from an old lady in the woods. Story 3: Their Soft Crowns DiscoveredThis story is about . Fowls are such a weak tribe… Story 4: The Wolf and the ManYeah, but can you fight?? This is a story about putting your money where your mouth is. Don't let men hear it though. Welcome to Banter-ville USA, population Madi, Gabby, and you. We do eventually get to Folktales though, and they go like this:Story 1 | Chinese New Year: here's a nice quick, straightforward one, we genuinely have no idea why we were so confused... but this is the story of the origin of Chinese New Year celebrations! You can expect a problematic (albeit only once a year) monster, a "newcomer", and a homeowning granny.Story 1.5 | Gabby's Off-the-Dome Chinese Zodiac Story: we will for sure come back to this one later, but here's a little sneaky-peaky. We love a freestyle here at Spill the Mead.Story 2 | The White Bear King: WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN AND IS THIS BEAR HOT?! In this Norwegian tale, we go for a gosh darn ride you guys... The bear is hot (we think), the princess is a dreamer, the twist is plural. The big take away here is, you can't just be a bear at some point in your life, and then not be hot if you're in human form. Right? Folktales around the fire, gooding & mumping and the terrifying Hooden Horse are just some of England's winter folk traditions from history. In this episode, Dan explores the unlikely and often dark origins of some of our Christmas traditions that can be traced back thousands of years. He's joined by folklore historian Vikki Bramshaw, to discover what midwinter legends were brought over with the Anglo-Saxon invasion, the origins of the Yule log and some of the unusual ways people passed the long nights in rural England (fortune-telling chestnuts). He also explores the New Forest, Hampshire, with local historian Richard Reeves to find out more about how medieval people survived the cold winters in the woods. You can discover more in Vikki's book 'New Forest Folklore, Traditions and Charms'.This is episode 4 of our 'Origins of Christmas' series. This December, Dan explores the history behind our Christmas traditions—from extravagant Tudor feasts and carolling to midwinter Solstice celebrations, the bawdy entertainment of the Georgians, and the family-focused customs of the Victorians.Produced by Mariana Des Forges.Sign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts. Welcome Flora Qian with her first novel "South of the Yangtze," a coming-of-age story of a thoughtful and curious Chinese girl, born and raised in Shanghai during the one-child years.* Flora discusses the origins of the novel which maps some of her own experiences as a young woman educated in China who then moved to Hong Kong. The intriguing novel, written in English, explores the themes of language, relationships, loneliness, and community, against a backdrop of post-Cultural Revolution China. Flora discusses her interest in Chinese characters, how Mandarin and English entered her life, how Chinese sayings and folk tales influence our thinking, the risks of original thought, and how circumstances often hinder our ability to reach greater intimacy with others. A thought-provoking episode with something for everyone. *And could make a great holiday present!Flora's website:https://floraqian.com/Thoughts? Comments? Potshots? Well, well... here's two folktales that both very much deal with animals for you, sweet HoneyBees.Story 1.) Hans the Hedgehog. With a name like that... what can go wrong? Well for starters, TW for child abuse because of the Grimm's of it all, but other than that, this one really can't be predicted (though that did NOT stop us from trying!) Only main takeaway from this one is this: what size were ya'll picturing Hans??Story 2.) Bougoodoogahdah. Our first ever folktale from Australia! And you guys... it's got DINGOES! Like, a totally reasonable amount of dingoes. Like. Between 2 - 400 dingoes. This Aboriginal folktale has its fair share of brutality (which Gabby is like, in super agreeance with) and ends with a tiny bird that brings rain. So. Put that in your pouch and bounce it, mates.
Nalo Hopkinson's latest work, Blackheart Man, is a dynamic sci-fi story that took 15 years to complete. The novel takes readers to the fantastical land of Chynchin, which was inspired by Afro-Caribbean histories and traditions. Nalo joins Mattea Roach to discuss the folktale-inspired world her characters live in, and the process of crafting a utopian novel while battling financial insecurity and chronic illness.

Well... we promise spooky folktales, and good lord do we deliver. Proceed with caution, honeybees!Story 1: The Baba Yaga: VOICE ACTING ALERT! Gabby shows UP for you with the voices in this episode. You'll hear her voice various humans with varying intentions, as well as at least 2 animals... and a door? The Baba Yaga is a witch-type character in Slavic folklore who likes to eat her nieces, not pay her staff, and neglect her pets. So sit at your loom and turn up the volume for this one.Story 2: The Juniper Tree: TRIGGER WARNING!!!! Oh wow. This is the most messed up thing we've ever read on this podcast. Proceed with caution; trigger warnings for child abuse, general violence, cannibalism, and horrific singing. Here is a sickening tale of an ill-fated "red and white boy" (WHAT DOES THAT MEAANNN?!?!?) his EVIL stepmother, his absent yet caring father, and his traumatized little half-sister. This story rambles on and on... and I guess there's a juniper tree in there somewhere too. Grimm's can do the rest of the story telling for this one, we're tapping out.
When a group of thieves break into Damsel the elephant's stall, their unkind and nasty plotting takes its toll on Damsel's usual kind and compassionate demeanour. Her owner, the king, upon the advice of the Buddha, surrounds her with wise and holy sages, who are able to restore her to her former kind and loving self. A lovely Buddhist tale that reminds us how our thoughts affect our actions. An episode from Journey with Story, a storytelling podcast for kids ages 4-10. Tonight, we'll read the final half of the story “Tears of Gold” found in “Folk-Tales of the Khasis” which was compiled by Mrs. Rafy and published in 1920. The original story in the book is titled “The Blessing of the Mendicant”. We first read this back in 2020. The first half of this story aired last week. In part one, a boy named U Babam Doh grows up not knowing that the father he had never known had was eaten by the dragon U Yak Jakor. The boy was bestowed the ability to cry tears of gold nuggets, because the boy's mother had consumed a magical rabbit stew. The rabbit was a gift from a wise beggar. U Babam Doh grows up with another boy that is the heir apparent of his father's chiefdom. This prince grows jealous of U Babam Doh's uncanny luck at winning, and charges him with witchcraft. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!
