She is a PharmD, an internationally acclaimed thyroid specialist, and a licensed pharmacist who has dedicated her career to addressing the root causes of autoimmune thyroid disease. She is also the author of three books. Her most recent book is The Adrenal Transformation Protocol. Dr. Wentz joins me to dive into how to identify what is going on with our adrenal health and why adrenal issues tend to occur along with thyroid issues. We speak about her background and how it influenced her life's work, the myth of adrenal fatigue, and HPA dysfunction. We also discuss the physiology of the adrenals, acute versus chronic stress, signs of a dysregulated HPA axis, lifestyle, the impact of trauma, and how Dr. Wentz's protocol works.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Dr. Wentz explains what led her to write The Adrenal Protocol. What happens in the body when we experience significant amounts of fatigue? How the physical impact of acute stress differs from that of chronic stress. Symptoms of adrenal dysfunction (other than chronic fatigue). How does sleep apnea tie to Hashimoto's and mitochondrial health? Lifestyle factors that may contribute to adrenal fatigue. Adaptogens and supplements that can assist in balancing cortisol levels. How to know when to cut back on exercise. Foods that support thyroid and adrenal health, and foods that could negatively impact thyroid and adrenal health. What is molecular mimicry? How does trauma impact adrenal health? It can feel so frustrating trying to determine what will actually work when it comes to health and weight loss. Maybe you feel like you've tried everything, or you've been dieting for more than 10 years and still aren't seeing the results you want. Tune in to understand why. This week, Jenn is joined by community pharmacist Dr. Kathy Campbell to discuss how our bodies are (or aren't) adapting in this modern world. Dr. Campbell shares why people are experiencing metabolic dysfunction and what we can do to battle it, given that she calls obesity “modern-day famine.” She talks about what factors in the world are impacting our health, and what is going on at a chemical level that we may not even be aware of. Dr. Kathy Campbell shares how to identify our own health culture, and determine what tweaks we need to make to have the biggest impacts. Oh! And Jenn also asks about GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy! Tune in to learn more. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [3:55] Jenn shares what members are getting this week.[5:53] Dr. Kathy Campbell shares her personal experience with weight management.[8:11] What does Dr. Campbell do as a community pharmacist?[12:16] How does metabolic dysfunction work in our bodies?[14:37] What are some of the consequences or expressions of our primitive caveman biology living in conflict with our modern world?[20:02] Dr. Campbell talks about how we are being failed and how that impacts our health. [23:25] How can you start to identify your own health culture and the tweaks you can make for big impacts?[27:55] What does culture mean to Dr. Campbell? [31:16] What does Dr. Campbell think about GLP-1's?[37:08] Rapid fire, off topic questions for Dr. Kathy Campbell. KEY TAKEAWAYS: What the body is doing is a hundred percent of the time appropriate to the environment with which it is surviving. It's not just the macro environment like the air around us, it's also the internal environment of the body, what's going on within the cellular level. You are the expert of your own body. Use yourself as a type of science experiment, try things and see if they work for you. If they don't try something else. There is a time and a place for medicine, but if you are taking pharmaceuticals and are not changing your habits and your lifestyle, you are doing your body a disservice. GLP-1's can be a tool in your tool box, but you also have to put in the work to fix your gut and focus on your overall health. QUOTES: [9:41] “The problem isn't our genetics. The problem is we've had a catastrophic environmental change for our human self and we have not evolved. I don't know that we will evolve to actually survive the current environment.” - Dr. Kathy Campbell“When people come to me, most are over-fed and under-nourished. That ends up in a place of metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance, we observe it as obesity.” - Jenn Trepeck[12:54] “The critical chemistries I see in the body are nutrients, oxygen, sunlight, water, love and connection. When I speak to my peers, I call it pharmacology, food pharmacology, and the hardest one is stress pharmacology.” - Dr. Kathy Campbell[24:32] “You're the only biochemical you, you're a unique organism living in a unique life with a unique history. You have to create around you a team, and I call it a partner's in health team. You need somebody that is a coach, you need a farmer, you need a doctor, you need a physical therapist, you need a massage therapist, if you don't have a good hairdresser on there, you're missing out. They're all part of almost a mirror, because often we're the last ones to know when the function slips, but that's an honest journeying through our health.” - Dr. Kathy CampbellRESOURCES:Train Like an Olympian Nutrition NuggetOlympics vs. Everyday Athletes PodcastBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESDr. Kathy Campbell's WebsiteDr. Kathy Campbell's InstagramGUEST BIODr. Kathy M. Key Takeaways Consistency and commitment to building strength will also build resilience. This will create the space to actually analyze how you’re doing. When you give yourself enough space to think, you’ll quickly realize what you’re truly capable of. When managing Hashimoto’s symptoms, it’s important to work out and push yourself. Yet, it’s all too easy to overdo it and end up with little to show but exhaustion. Finding the right regime and sticking to it will help you incrementally increase your strength and stamina without overtraining.   Isolation, helplessness, and loneliness are common feelings for women struggling with thyroid health. Many other people just don’t understand their symptoms. It takes dedication and commitment to retake control. Today’s guest shares her amazing story of how she did it.   About Stephanie Pearce After her diagnosis of Hashimoto’s, Stephanie tried many different things to get her life back in order. Anxiety about her thyroid health was a big part of her struggle. Through dedication and hard work, Stephanie has come out on the other side feeling more confident and empowered than ever.   Making the Necessary Changes Stephanie describes her long struggle with thyroid health. Even though she was not diagnosed with Hashimoto’s until three years ago, the signs had been there for some time. Brain fog, fatigue, and rapid weight loss took their toll. Since her diagnosis, Stephanie has been able to take control and move her health in the right direction. One of the first changes Stephanie made was to her diet. The grains and dairy left. Now she sticks to a paleo diet and feels so much better as a result. She also exercises regularly. What started as daily walks has evolved into the strength-based program of Thyroid Strong. Now Stephanie is thinking more clearly and is more motivated than she has been in many years.   Beating Anxiety with Knowledge, Dedication, and Support Throughout her struggles with thyroid health, Stephanie dealt with the anxiety that often accompanies it. It often felt like she was all alone in her situation. Little tasks that seemed so easy for other people were nearly impossible for her. Since Thyroid Strong, she lives her life with more clarity and confidence than she thought she ever could achieve. It has given her the knowledge and guidance she needs to feel better than she has in many years. What mindset shifts have been necessary on your health journey? In this episode of The Dr. Hedberg Show, I interview Dr. Izabella Wentz about her new book, "Hashimoto's Food Pharmacology."  We had a great talk about Hashimoto's disease, Dr. Wentz's Hashimoto's healing journey, foods that can help heal Hashimoto's disease, green smoothies, bone broth, and some recipes that can help heal Hashimoto's disease. I highly recommend all of Dr. Wentz's books and her new book will help you make food easier and healthier so you can heal your Hashimoto's disease. Dr. Hedberg: Well, welcome, everyone, to "The Dr. Hedberg Show." This is Dr. Hedberg, and I'm very excited today to have my good friend and colleague Dr. Izabella Wentz on the show. She has been on the podcast before, and I am excited to have her on today. So, Dr. Wentz, thanks for being on. Dr. Wentz: Thank you so much for having me, Dr. Hedberg. I'm a huge fan of your work, and it's an honor to be here with you. Dr. Hedberg: Great. So for those who don't know about you, why don't you just tell everyone a little bit about yourself and what you've been working on and your new book that's coming out? Dr. Wentz: Sure. So, I'm a pharmacist by training and, in full disclosure, I wasn't interested in the thyroid until I became diagnosed myself with Hashimoto's after almost a decade of some pretty confusing symptoms. So I had fatigue, and I had pain all over my body, acid reflux, hair loss, brain fog, and you pretty much name the thyroid symptom, I had it, but it had gone undiagnosed. I was a pharmacist and was super excited about taking medications for my thyroid once I found out that I had a thyroid condition, but unfortunately they only helped a tiny bit. At that point, I realized there was something else going on in my body, and I wanted to figure out if there was anything I can do to help myself, one, feel better and two, potentially reverse the condition, and that's sort of how I became a Hashimoto's expert/human guinea pig was really through my own journey with Hashimoto's and having a lot of different symptoms that nobody seemed to be able to solve. My official bio is that I am an author of multiple books on Hashimoto's. One of them is "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Finding and Treating the Root Cause." This was published in 2013. And then "Hashimoto's Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back." So this has been really my life's work is to help people with Hashimoto's take back their own health. After being able to do so myself, I have a brand new book coming out, "Hashimoto's Food Pharmacology." And this is really focused on nutrition, nutrition protocols, and then healing recipes to help people really kind of do it themselves. I know that there is a lot of forward movement for thyroid health in the world of functional medicine, but not everybody has access to an excellent functional medicine provider like Dr. Hedberg, for example. And there is a lot of things that people need to do in their own day-to-day life to take back their health and part of that is nutrition. So my new book is focused on helping you take back your own health and being your own nutrition guru when you have Hashimoto's. Dr. Hedberg: That's fantastic. So most of my listeners have Hashimoto's. So, for those who don't really know that much about it, can you give us kind of an overall view of what exactly Hashimoto's is, and all the different statistics related to that? Dr. Wentz: Sure. So Hashimoto's is probably the top autoimmune condition, the most common autoimmune condition worldwide. For those that don't know what it is, it's actually the immune system starts to recognize the thyroid gland as a foreign invader and begins to launch an attack against the thyroid gland, and this eventually leads to the thyroid gland not being able to produce enough thyroid hormone. And it really goes along with a lot of different symptoms. So people will have problems with brain fog,
