In a 2007 Film Comment essay, Amy Taubin wrote in praise of Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke, a documentary about the Hurricane Katrina disaster and the communities that bore its brunt. For Amy, “Lee makes it possible for their stories to be inscribed in history. It is left to us not to forget them.” The same could be said of Lee's epic new mini-series NYC Epicenters 9/11→2021½, a deep-dive into New York City's recent history of trauma and resilience, from the September 11 attacks to the COVID-19 pandemic. On today's podcast, FC editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish sat down with Amy as well as critic, artist, and archivist Ina Archer to discuss the fascinating sprawl of the show, a highly personal tribute to the spirit of Lee's hometown.

For Amy's weekly fireside chat, she shares the hot button concept that family pushes our buttons because they were the ones who put them there. Naturally this leads to tangents that include, but are not limited to; Randy's clippings, whether screenshots are essentially modern clippings, favorite emojis for texting, how to say gif (Jiff or giff) and the language of memes. Amy welcomes longtime friend Tori Berntsen to chat about “forced family fun” – what it means to moms versus kids, how to not hit the panic button as kids hit the eject button and what it becomes for everyone down the road a bit (right on the button). The show ends with 80's TV trivia, which at the touch of a button, she can answer in a way that is, Eternally Amy. To learn more, find her book or connect with Amy, go to www.amylizharrison.com

CW: fear of food, reluctance to eat, being obsessive and controlling with food. For many with endo, eating can be a struggle as it may lead to digestive symptoms, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, pain, fatigue, and other horrible symptoms. This may lead us to change our diet, which can feel restrictive, limited, or depriving. Or it may cause us to begin to fear eating, since eating often causes us a terrible flare. For Amy, eating is one of her biggest challenges and the source of many flares, and that led to her having a very unhealthy relationship with food. We talk about how we've personally been able to let go of the fear around eating and have a much better relationship with food. LIKE OUR SHOW? Please rate it or leave a review! CONNECT WITH US! Today, I’m excited to talk to Amy & Adam Fazackerley, Co-Founders of Lay-n-Go, a company that designs and manufactures innovative organizational solutions for life, play, and travel.  I’ve interviewed them both individually, so if you haven’t listened to those episodes, add them to your playlist! But today we’re doing something different - and talking to them about what it’s like to work with your spouse day in, day out. Welcome, Adam & Amy! In this episode… Instead of the speed round, they start out with a few either / or questions.  Both Amy and Adam both feel it is easier to work with their spouse than anyone else in the family!  They have very distinct strengths and weaknesses, which, perhaps is part of the secret.  Adam laughs as he shared his weakness is he is always in trouble and Amy’s strength is she is forgiving.  Amy shared a true benefit in being founders together is the ability to work things together versus another founder who hops in his or her car and drives away.   Together, they run their business a different way.  They are lifestyle based, work hard, and always want what is best for their family. However, it isn’t always smooth, and days do not always start out with having breakfast casually.  What is really important is really understanding the other person.  For Amy, balance is really important to each of them.  Stephanie wanted to know if they feel as though they are working more than an average person because they work together.  Both, Amy and Adam, stated yes and that is the nature of the base.  They both agree their kids have been a pretty cool part of the journey.  Making best use of their time, such as in the car, it very important.  They’re very focused and intentional on what they want their business to be.  After ten years in business, the number one question is where do they want to be in five years or ten years and what do they want it to look like?  What they do fall back on is the trust they have in each other.      One of the other things they like to do is give back by teaching the next generation about the things they went through in starting and running their business.  Together they are very active in extracurricular entrepreneurship things.  Working with other people is what makes them tick. Other than a shared vision, there are other parts of working together that have contributed to their success.  They include communication, trust, and really looking at going back to the strengths.  Adam feels understanding those hot spots is ultra-important.  For instance, if there is friction, Amy does not want any part of that.  It isn’t always as easy as a line down the middle.  When it comes to other founders, there are certain things they should look for, but there are also those they should avoid.  Adam shares that a lot of times the teams that come to them are paired up, but if they’re not, just remember you are picking a partner so find someone who has the strengths where you may lack.  If there are issues between partners, they like to push for resolutions that are fair.  Amy shares that it is important to stick with what you love, what will get you out of bed every day and stick with that.  It shouldn’t feel like work.  Just look at what drives and motivates you. Before involving a family member in your business, there are some questions that need to be asked of yourself.  Such as, “What do you want out of this?”  In fact, that should be a mutual question.  If everyone wants success and progression, it’s a pretty good start.  If you are going to involve family, figure out ways they will help build the business but also do it in the family role.  They do consider their friends as their family as well.  For them, their friends also started as their first focus groups.  On the flip side, everyone needs to make sure it is working for those involved.  Keeping open lines of communication are so important, family or not.  They close with one piece of advice for others who are going to work with family, and that is to just have fun and move on.  Also, give one another enough slack to make mistakes, forgive and learn. Today's episode is all about Amy's journey with infertility! I myself haven't had this experience, so I really appreciate Amy's vulnerability with her experience to help me better understand what I didn't before! Sharing and Listening to each other's life experiences is how humans best learn to love ourselves and each other more fully! How she dealt with the feelings of failure around her body’s functions. Menstrual shame vs loving your menstrual cycle. The coldness of the medical procedures she endured. The Marital pressures of conceiving or not. The deep loneliness she felt which led to profound beauty. Her difficult experience with hormonal contraceptives. The magic of our menstural cycles and other relationships women and girls have with their bodies. The how empowering the “pill” was in the beginning, but how it’s turned into something else entirely. The damaging messages woman receive from their care providers, peers, and society about infertility. How she navigated personal relationships with people who love her but don’t understand what she was going through.how her experience helped her see the bigger picture of life which helped her understand that she’s enough even without a motherhood experience. How pregnancy, birth and early motherhood has been for her thus far, especially through Covid lock down Her journey of infertility has inspired the writing and publishing her current fiction novel and future novel. The importance of being real in a largely phoney culture. We ended with some good chuckles. To check out Amy's website and written work, click here https://www.amyjmattes.comFor Amy's Instagram click here https://www.instagram.com/amyjmattes/To checkout and sign up for my Patreon Page click here https://www.patreon.com/wtwwg?fan_landing=trueWhere The Wild Women Grow Instagram click here https://www.instagram.com/wherethewildwomengrow/ Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I Heart My Life Show

The world of online coaching is booming right now, but I’m finding a lot of new coaches making one of two mistakes. Either they’re not niching their offer and therefore not targeting a specific audience or they’re niching too much to the point where they are actually limiting future growth. Even worse? Some aspiring coaches get so hung up on the buzzword itself that they never move into the actual business creation. Let’s avoid that, shall we? There’s no doubt that figuring out your niche is a great way to get clear on your offers, target your ideal audience, and make it more obvious how you can serve them. The downside? It's a buzzword that can send people in a panic or leave them scratching their heads wondering how specific is too specific or, on the other hand, at which point does broad dilute a sense of expertise? If you can relate to this challenge, keep reading (or better yet, go ahead and hit play on this episode). I recently recorded a live coaching session with one of our I Heart Coaching members, Amy Bett. Amy is a new coach who is already hitting $5k months in just 5 months with our program. As a woman with big ambitions and the desire to help other female business owners in their businesses, she is now looking at how to get to the next level. During our session, she brought up some great points that are relatable to new coaches in any realm of the industry. Specifically, Amy was looking for advice regarding if she should get more specific with her niche and if so, how to do so while also bringing in more revenue. Follow along as I coach Amy through honing in on her niche by clearly identifying what she is selling and who she is selling it to. We dive into the pain points and desires of her current (and ideal) clients as well as her goals for them. From there, we chat about how to create the right program that addresses their needs and her desires. The truth is, the more specific you can get with your offers and your clients, the more you can establish your expertise. This is imperative to hitting those revenue goals you've been dreaming of. For Amy, I walk her through how she can be on her way to surpassing her current $5k months (and reach $50k months in no time). We also discuss other common pain points for new coaches, from determining your price point with confidence to increasing your revenue with ease. And you know how much I love money mindset, so you can be sure that we touch upon a few tips for keeping your money mindset on the right track as your business grows too.  So, if you’re just starting out in the coaching world and looking for guidance in terms of identifying your niche, determining your price point, and increasing your revenue, you don’t want to miss this one. In this episode… [03:07] Welcome, Amy! Hear how I Heart Coaching has helped Amy create her coaching business. [06:41] Why you need to establish goals for your clients. [08:36] Determining your ideal client and ideal program can help determine your niche. [11:30] Your niche can naturally evolve (and that’s okay). [13:10] Upleveling your offers to continue to meet your client’s needs. [16:14] The importance of having a unique methodology.  [19:01] Steps to ensure you are nurturing your money mindset. [21:30] How to approach raising your rates and 10x your revenue in one month. [27:23] Laying the groundwork for achieving $50k months. Quotes: “So one of the things that I see sets coaches like you apart is having some sort of unique methodology, even if it's like, you know, a three-part a three-step process or something. So I would think, and you don't have to develop it today, but think about the current clients and kind of what is the process you're taking them through.” -Emily Williams “We want to get clear on who you're speaking to and what it is that you're selling.” -Emily Williams “I feel as though the underlying fear could have been me actually charging people for the services to help them. So maybe it wasn't getting the clients is the hard part. It's getting the paying clients, which is the hard part. But I haven't found that to be the case, especially now because I'm so clear and focused.” -Amy Bett “Let's start focusing on the belief of ‘clients come to me effortlessly,’ ‘I'm charging whatever amount it is that you want to say, and clients will pay that,‘ ‘I get paid premium for my coaching packages.’ Whatever the mantras are that will help them mind you that those $50k months are available for you.” -Emily Williams Links & Resources: Learn more about I Heart Coaching Subscribe to the Podcast: I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts I Heart My Life Show on Spotify Connect with Emily: I Heart My Life Website I Heart My Life on Instagram I Heart My Life on Facebook I Heart My Life on LinkedIn I Heart My Lifers Community Email: info@iheartmylife.com Book a Call Episode Sponsor: Business Intensive Coaching Workshop

This week’s question comes from Jaclyn in our Facebook group (facebook.com/whatfreshhellcast): "Would love some advice for the "monsters under the bed" phase. My three-year-old is worse than he was as a newborn, waking me up 30 times at night! If I ignore him, he will scream and cry, then come into our room. I could let him sleep with us, but he doesn't sleep well when he is in our bed, and neither do we. I tried to put a bed for him on the floor of our room, but he kept asking for more items-water, blankets, pillows, etc. Help!" In his book The Happiest Toddler on the Block, Dr. Jonathan Karp considers kids' developmental stages as a replay of humanity's evolutionary stages. A 12-18 month old is a "charming chimp-child," 18-24 months is a little Bam-Bam, and by 3 years old, kids have gotten about as sophisticated as someone alive during the Middle Ages might have been. To people alive in the Middle Ages, vampires were real. They didn't have the luxury of going to therapy to unpack what was behind their fear of someone coming to drink their blood; they put some garlic around their necks and went to bed feeling a little better about their chances of waking up in the morning. For kids who still believe in magical things as being fully possible, the best "protection" parents can offer them from something scary but imaginary might be something equally unreal and totally wonderful. For Amy's daughter, drawing a picture of her guardian angel to put next to her bad was enough to move her past her absolute certainty that Edward Scissorhands was coming to get her. All the rationalizing that Amy had tried before that faile, but to her daughter, the angel's protection was real. Instead of talking her daughter out of it, Amy found that a little "good magic" was the far more effective response. To be clear: a preschooler waking up at night that much might have something else going on, from a soaking-wet Pull-Up to something that might be worth mentioning to your pediatrician. But a spray bottle full of water, also known as No-Monsters-In-Here Magic Elixir, might be more effective than you'd think. The biggest adjustment for the world of enterprise sales, sales leadership, and sales executives right now is getting back to the basics. We came out of a marketplace that was cluttered and booming. And it is now bouncing back in a big way. Buyers are more demanding than ever, and sales leaders need to seek to understand their customers. The key criteria that founders need right now when building their enterprises and hiring leaders are:Digging deeper and getting to understand what it means to build an enterprise.Understanding the application of how to get to where they want to go, and also understanding the work that is required to get them there.People’s stories need to be honest, and the details need to be very specific.Founders need to get right with themselves in terms of whether or not something is truly an enterprise. Truly understanding your business and the market you’re in speaks louder than anybody else, any podcast you listen to, or any article that you read. There are many different ways to think about someone who is in a sales role, so people need to know how to look for and how to see the qualities that they require in those they want to hire when they conduct an interview. They need to realize that what people show is a lot more relevant than what they say, and that is why Amy encourages people to think well below the surface when someone makes a big statement at the surface level. Many companies hide behind the culture, values, and beliefs that they stand for. For Amy, it is far more important to think deeply about what those things truly mean and how important they are when hiring someone. What the makeup of Amy's ideal sales leader for a startup or an enterprise to fit the needs of the market right now would look like:First and foremost, it has to be about people. They need to be able to be a customer-centric leader.Sales leaders need to feel very passionate about understanding the other bits and pieces that make up a business. So they need to be able to strategize and collaborate with product folk, executive leadership, customer success, accounting and finance, and marketing. As an enterprise seller, you need to think about: Is your product a market fit?Is your territory is good, can you spread your wings and fly, and do you have a real opportunity to be successful? Are you are genuinely interested in what’s going on, and can you genuinely connect with who the buyers are in the journey? You don’t have all the answers, and things change, so know that you are never finished learning.Do you truly understand the work that you want to be doing? If you are an employer looking for an enterprise rep, you want:Someone who can clearly articulate why they care about sales.Someone who has questions to ask at the end of the interview process. If you want to learn more tips like this for FREE grab "the 10 questions needed to unlock ANY Enterprise Deal" that no one is telling you about: https://www.smbuiltfreedom.com/podLinks and resources:The Thursday Night Sales PodcastAmy on LinkedInAvenue Talent Partners

How to be Heard Over the “Me Too” Movement  Today’s guest is Amy Chorew and she’s going to speak about the “Me Too” movement, a hot topic in today’s generation. Amy sheds light on how our voices can be heard above the movement and how it has impacted women in leadership.  Being interrupted  Amy has been interrupted many times due to her roles in the corporate world.  Emotional intelligence for Amy is more about the leadership skills. She took an emotional intelligence test and the results showed her the strengths and weaknesses she has. She learned that she needed to focus on being positive instead of reacting without thinking things through.  Amy’s coach taught her to come from a place of curiosity instead of just reacting. It was the first step to figure out how to handle interruptions.  “Me Too” movement and women in leadership For Amy, some movements have a lot of whining. This is something she doesn’t tolerate.  The Woman Up group, started by the California Association of Realtors, put some strong legs in the process of becoming a better leader.  We are living in a time where many people are finally opening their eyes and ears.  There’s been an expansion of awareness and the “Me Too” movement is pushing that sense of awareness.  The “Me Too” movement was generally a women’s movement but it has opened doors and other platforms for everybody. It’s a movement of inclusion. People can articulate their thoughts and be who they are.  Many groups started to rewrite their leadership, their business management, and how things are done because of the movement.  For Amy, being demeaned means being taken at face value. She handled that by staying relevant and making sure to over-deliver.  Overcoming negative experiences Have a better sense of self-worth and don’t take things personally.  Always believe in yourself because if you don’t, no one else will. It’s always good to take a few steps back to see the people who are supportive of your causes.  Amy suggests to not just agree. If you have them, voice your concerns and always research the facts. Back your solutions with data.  Get a mentor who will help you figure out how things work and how to connect with the right people.  “How to be Heard Over the “Me Too” Movement” episode resources Check out Amy Chorew via LinkedIn.  This episode is sponsored by The Sales Evangelist, helping new and struggling sellers close more deals and smash their quotas. Amy Clement, professor at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, loves the ocean. We are mentioning this because her research may seem to suggest otherwise: Amy has proposed bold and controversial ideas about how the role of the ocean in controlling several modes of variability of the climate system may be smaller than most climate scientists had believed. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon relies heavily on the coupling of the atmosphere to the ocean? The sea surface temperature patterns of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) are the result of ocean heat transport? Maybe not, argues Amy. She found that climate models with “deactivated” oceans can produce many aspects of these phenomena with atmospheric forcing alone. As remarkable as these findings is the way Amy has never been afraid of discussing them with scientists who held strongly opposing views, even when she was a grad student and was much less experienced than her critics. For Amy, science is about leaving your ego at home and focus on the ideas, with openness and curiosity, and a shared goal of advancing our understanding of the earth system. “As scientists, when someone comes along and says, well let’s look at it differently. Isn’t that fun? If you read the literature, there’s a lot of confirmation bias, to be honest, and less of people saying, 'how can this idea be wrong?' And to me, that’s really disappointing." As much as she enjoys doing research for the pleasure of figuring things out, she has also been led into climate science by her social consciousness, and in this interview you'll hear her talk about her work on climate adaptation with a range of groups in Miami, and why she started doing this after waking up the morning after the Presidential election of 2016. Also, she and Adam discuss whether science is the right career for someone who wants to make a difference on climate. The interview with Amy Clement was recorded in July 2019. David and Helen talk this week with Amy Maxmen, senior reporter at Nature. Amy has covered the Ebola epidemic in Western Africa and now COVID-19 in the US. Does she see comparisons between the two? What explains the failures of the US response? Can the WHO still make a difference? Plus we explore the implications of the growing politicisation of science. When did data become so divisive?Talking Points:There are significant parallels between what is happening now and epidemics such as ebola.Outbreaks turn slight cracks into gaping holes: they reveal political and systemic issues.Politics made the ebola outbreak in DRC worse.Conspiracy theories emerged that ebola was being used to suppress the political opposition.Ultimately Tedros and other experts were able to convince both politicians and local leaders to focus on the public health response instead of the politics. The parallels to the US now are clear, but could any figure get past the politics? For Amy, the lack of tests and the failure to contact trace and quarantine made it clear that the U.S. response would be much worse than she had feared. The U.S. hasn’t faced a pandemic in a long time and there was no sense of the kind of coordination that would be required. Different states are still doing different things. There’s a lot to be said for supply chain management right now.In an ideal world, we would get a vaccine sooner rather than later. But we don’t know.Funding for vaccines is great, but the basic public health response still needs to be funded. The WHO is now getting politicized, but they still have the most experience at coordinating things like this at a global level.A lot of people misunderstand what the WHO can and can’t do. It’s pretty small in terms of both budget and power. The WHO can’t enforce things; it works through diplomacy and relationships. But there is still a lot of power in that.If you need people to stay home; you need to be sure that you can support them.Supporting people alleviates public pressure to prematurely lift the lockdown and it ensures that people can actually survive.Mentioned in this Episode: Amy on the WHO’s fight against Ebola in the DRCHow the US dropped the ball on testing and contact tracing back in MarchOn tests going unused in US labsThe NYTimes on how the Trump administration ignored WHO warningsFurther Learning:Nature on why the WHO is so important right nowMore on how low and middle income countries are responding to the crisis More on the ebola outbreak in Sierra LeoneAnd as ever, recommended reading curated by our friends at the LRB can be found here: lrb.co.uk/talking See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

As a podcast is being released at the height of a worldwide pandemic, Amy’s words ring true for all of us, “That which you put your mind to grows stronger. So sometimes when you are in those stuck places (think home for 2-3 weeks) and you just don’t know what to do, and you just let your mind keep perseverating about being hurt or upset, you do get stuck there. You have to realize you can change that thought pattern and can choose to move on.” For all of us right now, “doing” is about moving beyond fear and anxiety in our thoughts, holding those we love close and taking every possible step to stay well. First and foremost, Amy Skinner is grateful to be a mom to two delightful teenage daughters. Amy's adventures with her girls are what energizes her for the rest of life, including a career in the communications field. She is a communications strategist and team builder with more than twenty years experience in industries from IT to education and nonprofit. Her expertise falls in the areas of change management, brand development, and outreach and engagement. When she's not enjoying time with her daughters or hard at work at the office, you'll find her on her yoga mat. Woofie’s is a new franchise that is the first to offer the combined services of personalized pet sitting, dog walking and mobile pet spa. Prior to Woofie's, Amy Reed had over 10 years of experience in Marketing, Sales, and Sales Training with a successful track record in high-tech start-up companies and large carrier organizations.   Key Takeaways: [0:18] Today’s episode of Franchise Euphoria is brought to you by IndyFranchiseLaw.com, a leading resource in the franchise space. Head over to IndyFranchiseLaw.com learn more! [0:59] Josh introduces today’s guest, Amy Reed, the co-founder and co-owner of the Woofies franchise. [2:27] Josh welcomes Amy to Franchise Euphoria. [2:59] Amy tells the story of how she got into this unique industry fifteen years ago. [5:16] Amy remembers that initially people couldn’t believe that she was leaving her six-figure salary job to “go walk dogs” but she explains that people just didn’t understand the need for this type of service like they do now since it was such an unsaturated market. [8:03] To kickstart their business, Amy and her partner started with really traditional marketing – putting an ad her local media and going door to door to pitch their business. [11:16] Amy reflects on the degree of trust that is necessary for hiring personnel for your business. She admits it was hard to release control in the beginning, but she realized it was a necessity to see the growth they wanted. [12:35] While Amy tells us she always had franchising in the back of her mind as an option for the business, they recognized the benefit of fine tuning their business before they took that step. [16:05] Reflecting over the last fifteen years, Amy details the changes in the industry that have come about due to developments in technologies and demand. [20:37] For Amy, the ideal Woofies franchisee is first and foremost somebody who loves animals. Beyond that, you need to have a business foundation, be able to multi-task, and know how to build a great team. [22:37] Woofies owner-operators will need to purchase a mobile grooming van, and while it isn’t required to have a local office, it is recommended. She told me that she was moving away from Weight Watchers, and that she was learning a new way of eating that allowed her to live happy and free. This entire season is on body and soul, so Amy is the perfect guest to have back on the show. She struggled for years with poor body image and binge eating disorder. Amy is now sharing her journey with others in hopes of offering hope that our darkest days make us stronger and that God always has a bigger plan. [16:35] The message that Amy wants her kids to know is to treat their bodies kindly and talk about their bodies kindly and feed it the way that it needs to be fed. [17:01] In 2008, Amy went to therapy for binge eating disorder. During this therapy she worked through the 10 principles of Intuitive Eating. [17:37] These principles are things like honor your hunger, feel your fullness, and reject the diet mentality. [17:55] These beliefs are so ingrained in Amy's head that it's a process she still has to work through everyday. [19:09] We have the innate ability to listen to our own fullness and hunger cues. [20:27] Amy started dieting in fourth grade. She looked for outside sources to tell her when and what to eat instead of looking inside to herself. [21:09] Amy is perfecting intuitive eating by listening to her body right now while she is pregnant. [23:37] Weight loss isn't the goal for intuitive eating. Although, it doesn't mean that you won't lose weight. [26:13] When you fix your head, you can then appreciate your body for what it is and what it can do. [28:56] People don't always like change, Amy switching her eating perspective has attracted push back from some people. [29:32] She was so focused on a number. She didn't even realize it until she stepped away from Weight Watchers. [31:05] She decided to break the chains and not allow anyone to tell her what is healthy for her body. [32:01] Women need to learn that there is a way to get to a place of body neutrality. [32:39] Her why is playing with her kids and getting through her pregnancy in a healthy way. [33:27] Putting focus on your body will feed your mind and your soul, because they are all interconnected. [35:55] Being hyper focused on your weight doesn't leave room for other things that will actually bring you joy and happiness. [37:41] Amy learned that she needed more sleep and more water. She also craves vegetables. [42:46] Going down the path of intuitive eating needs to be something that you are ready for. Amy wants people to see that their worth is more than just their weight. Amy Haworth is a passionate member of the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP) as well as a hiring manager at Citrix who is excited for the new Certified Change Management Professional (CCMP) certification that ACMP now offers. For Amy, this certification helps her validate the capabilities and strengths of her hires. Amy also touches on how different the industry would be without the ACMP as well as some of the important conversations that the change industry need to be having today, namely: focusing on building resilience as a capability and changing our communication and language from top-down change toward a more peer-to-peer collaborative model, which has implications for how you craft your change management plan.SolutionsIQ's Kat Conner hosts at Change Management 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana.About Agile AmpedThe Agile Amped podcast series brings Agile news and events to life. For Amy's chosen theme of "The Summer that Everything Changed," Randy and Joe went dude-centric with their choices, entirely by accident. Randy chose Stephen King's novella "The Body," the basis of the movie "Stand by Me." Joe chose David Gordon Green's 2013 film "Prince Avalanche." Intro music by The Motels Exit music by Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo. Explosions in the Sky not only scored the movie, they were the ones who suggested the film to Gordon Green in the first place.

Reality is in The Mind of the Beholder Dr. Amy Johnson, author of Modern Enlightenment, shares her insights about the nature of thought and how thought habits form the thought filters through which we view the world. We each have our own individualized perception of reality that is separate and apart from anyone else’s individualized perception of reality. The moment your brain begins processing stimuli, your individual consciousness is born. From this point forward you begin to experience reality from your own egocentric point of view. As you take in information your brain effectively recognizes repeated stimulus/response patterns and actually changes and forms neuropathways making the future processing of this pattern a fluid, almost undetectable process. These neurological changes are the roots of your core beliefs and form your internal map of reality. As you grow you continue to synthesize, streamline, lump and group all of your experiences based on how your individual brain filters the stimulus it receives. By seven or eight years old you have a fairly solidified version of what “reality” is which is different from every one else’s. The developmental process continues throughout your life with your brain responding and altering itself to adapt to new conscious or unconscious stimuli. In scientific terms this process is know as neuroplasticity. Thoughts that are repeated over and over get primary attention as do thoughts that are infused with fear energy. Your brain sees these as very important and wants to make sure you have access to them in times of perceived “danger.” According to Dr. Amy Johnson in her blog post on MariaShriver.com, “this is how our way of being in the world gets shaped. Something happens and out of our perceived need for survival, we define ourselves in relation to it….that’s the moment we lose a little piece of ourselves.” Your brain does this over and over again, learning, adapting, engraining, altering, changing and through this process the pure consciousness that you were born with becomes buried under layers of solidified thoughts and beliefs. I was struck by Amy’s favorite definition of enlightenment as removing the dimness or blindness from one’s heart. She makes the statement that “our hearts become dim when they are covered with layers upon layers of beliefs and expectations…removing the dimness begins with awareness and end with choice.” For Amy, enlightenment is not associated with any religious practice or philosophy. It is about accepting that your brain has been shaped and programmed by your experiences, being mindful and noticing when this programming is running your thoughts and changing it when you can. It is also about understanding that much of this programming is deeply engrained, so having compassion for yourself when it drives your emotions and behavior is essential. The quest for enlightenment is an ongoing journey. And according to Amy, her book, Modern Enlightenment, is about finding the balance between loving and accepting yourself as you are and striving to uncover and learn more to become who you were born to be.
