You might want to call this episode of BEHIND THE LENS, "Six Degrees of Separation of Paul Rudd" as all of our filmmakers today are connected to Paul Rudd. . .and let's not forget that Paul Rudd has two films currently out in theatres and/or on VOD and digital – THE CATCHER WAS A SPY and "Ideal Home" – with one of the most anticipated films of the year opening up this week – ANT-MAN AND THE WASP! First up, we dive into the quantum realm of ANT-MAN AND THE WASP and hear a bit from writer/director PEYTON REED as he talks about the award-worthy editing of the film as cast and crew traverse the streets of San Francisco, going from micro to macro to huge and back again, wth rapier precision and edge of your seat intensity. And you'll hear film critic debbie elias' take on the heartfelt family humor filling the film. (Come on! Who doesn't love silly dad jokes!) Then we move into some world history and particularly that of WWII and the story of former baseball player, Moe Berg, with THE CATCHER WAS A SPY. A multi-degreed intellectual, fluent in at least 12 languages, Berg was solicited by the OSS and tasked with uncovering the truth about German physicist and 1932 Nobel Prize winner Werner Heisenberg and whether he was developing the atom bomb for the Nazis. If Berg believed Heisenberg was close to achieving the impossible, his mission was to kill him. The US, of course, was deep into The Manhattan Project. With a script by "Saving Private Ryan" scribe Robert Rodat, and Paul Rudd in the starring role as Moe Berg, take a listen to our exclusive interview with director BEN LEWIN ("The Sessions", "Please Stand By") as he goes in-depth on THE CATCHER WAS A SPY talking everything from history to casting to production design to locations to expanding his own directorial skills with battle sequencing and multi-camera lensing, and a personal favorite, getting to play with a real Sherman tank. A fascinating conversation about a fascinating film. THE CATCHER WAS A SPY is in theatres and On Demand. A "Must See Film." As a side note, a documentary on Moe Berg from Aviva Kempner is in the works and anticipated to hit the festival circuit in 2019. As Paul Rudd himself said to me last week, "Can you believe it? Isn't this story something? Isn't [Moe] an interesting guy?" Absolutely. Lastly, we take a look at UNDER THE TREE. From Icelandic writer/director HAFFSTEIN GUNNAR SIGURDSSON (whose first film "Either Way" was remade by David Gordon Green as "Prince Avalanche" starring Paul Rudd), UNDER THE TREE is a dark dark comedy about what being neighborly is all about. . .or not. At its heart, a metaphor for war and geopolitical conflict, listen as Haffstein talks not only about story development, but casting "The Tree." Yes, filmmakers, there was tree casting. Take a listen and learn all about it! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This week: [Obvious Child, 2014, Gillian Robespierre] A romantic comedy about abortion?! Those godless New York liberals have done it again. This, friends, is what feminism hath wrought. [Prince Avalanche, 2013, David Gordon Green] Drinking, swearing, casual sex. Is nothing sacred? Certainly not in this outrageous piece of left-wing propaganda starring that serial underminer of American values, Paul Rudd. [Point Break, 1991, Kathryn Bigelow] Bank robbers? Surfers? People named "Keanu"? Lock them up, I say, and throw away the key! But of course the liberal elites behind this vile "entertainment" are too in thrall to Mammon to contemplate ideals of righteous justice.

This week, Libraries and Librarians! We talk ordering systems, the philosophy of trying to keep everything, how libraries can disappear and of course, how to look fabulous when becoming a librarian in 1990s New York. The movie was 1995's Party Girl and the book was Alberto Manguel's The Library At Night. Also discussed: The Witches Of East End, Obvious Child, The Astronaut Wives Club, From The Earth To The Moon, In The Shadow Of The Moon, Ex Libris, The To-Do List. For the next episode, Amy chose the theme; we'll be talking "The Summer That Changed Everything." We'll be watching 2013's Prince Avalanche (which is streaming on Netflix) and reading Stephen King's "The Body" (which is collected in Different Seasons). Show Notes: Amy refers to high heels for books so that they would be the same height on shelves; that was not Johnson but Samuel Pepys, whose library is still maintained at Magdalene College at Cambridge. I refer to Jorge Luis Borge's at one point and mention a story he wrote about an infinite library. That is "The Library Of Babel," which is available here. The essay that Amy references on actors and range & actors who have that one great groove is here. Intro music: "Swinging Long," by The Magnetic Fields Outro music: "Librarian", by Morning Jacket

With Mark Lawson. The film Prince Avalanche is a tale of two men (played by Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch) who, as they spend a summer painting the traffic markings on a country highway, share a journey of self-discovery. Novelist M J Hyland reviews. Mark visits a Luton primary school, as the children get to see a Frank Auerbach painting, on loan for the day. The work came from the Ben Uri Gallery as part of the Masterpieces in Schools programme, a partnership between the Public Catalogue Foundation and BBC Learning. Mark joins the children as they prepare to see a masterpiece first-hand, many of them for the very first time, and hears their thoughts about Auerbach's Mornington Crescent, Summer Morning II. Michael Blakemore joined the National Theatre as an Associate Director in 1971 under the leadership of Sir Laurence Olivier. His memoir Stage Blood tells the story of his time at the theatre and reveals the reasons behind his dramatic exit in 1976 after speaking out against Peter Hall's leadership. He reflects on why now was the right time to tell his story. Producer Claire Bartleet.

Fans of long episodes and of things getting knocked over in Dave and Alonso's apartment should enjoy this one. Plus we announce the winner of our creepy-doll contest, and we pay homage not only to Karen Black but also Eydie Gorme and Marilyn King. If a director is looking for the perfect guy to play an oblivious, cocky buffoon then Fred Willard is their man. Jesse talks to Fred about his entire career, and finds out why he turned down the lead in the movie Airplane! Then later Jesse talks to David Gordon Green. He’s directed everything from pensive, dramatic movies like All The Real Girls to huge stoner-action comedies like Pineapple Express. His new movie, Prince Avalanche exists somewhere in between. Plus, Pitchfork’s Ian Cohen recommends a couple of great new heavy rock records, we share an episode from Nate DiMeo’s The Memory Palace, and Jesse talks about his favorite Robin Thicke record. Yes. He has a favorite Robin Thicke record. It’s great, too.
