This week's guest is Lori Garver, former Deputy Administrator for NASA & author of Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age, describing how she drove the commercial space program with Elon Musk against the wishes of Senators on both sides of the House, whilst in a misogynistic, male-dominated NASA culture. The last two years have been challenging for us all. Lori increased her activist nature as much as possible to help drive to a better future. One of the ways she did this, was write a memoir that uses her career at NASA to help light a path to a better future for us all.As she outlines in the book, when she left home and went to college, she started to consider how she could best impact the world. She worked for John Glenn on his Presidential Campaign, which is what got her into space. The Challenger and Columbia accidents were both pain-points that showed her that human spaceflight had gotten off-track. The government led system was rewarding contractors and congress more interested in their own agenda, than true progress.Out of these literal ashes, she helped craft NASA policies and programs to reduce the cost of space transportation and make utilizing space for broad and valuable purposes more accessible. As a woman who has reached the one of highest echelons of NASA, being a role model to others is an important aspect of her later career. She began a Fellowship for collegiate women and gender minorities, which now offers 50 paid summer internships annually - with over 200 alumni currently. Two years ago, they expanded this to include another Fellowship to give even more opportunities Black college students. She's also started a program called Earthrise Alliance, which is dedicated to fully utilizing satellite data to address climate change. We went to space over 50 years ago, and the most important thing we learned is about our home planet, Earth. What we have learned about our changing climate from space, has allowed us to understand what is happening and how to adopt ways to adapt and reverse the damage from humanity's dependence on greenhouse gas emissions. Courage can mean a lot of things, but in her life, it means standing up for what you believe in, even when it is not popular. Taking a position you know is right, instead of doing things to advance your own career was necessary to advance our efforts in space, which is ultimately critical to our survival here on earth and beyond. Thank you so much Lori for giving us a bird's eye view on the world and showing us how continued space exploration will give invaluable insights into how to protect our planet, and give us a future worth fighting for. Thanks also for showing us the fragility of our beautiful blue planet and reminding us to do all we can to conserve our oasis that hangs like a miracle in the vastness of the Universe. You can find our more about Lori's work on https://www.lorigarver.com/ and follow her on Linkedin @lorigarver Join Lou on LinkedinFollow her @brave_newgirl on Instagram and get her books Brave New Girl- How to be Fearless, FEAR LESS and her Internationally Bestselling book DARE TO SHARE on Amazon or Waterstones or Barnes & Noble. In this episode we sit down with Lori Garver, Former NASA Deputy Administrator, to discuss her experience with NASA, serving under multiple presidents, persevering even when it seems like everyone is against you, and of course, her new book, Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age. About the Author: Lori Garver was the principal advisor on aerospace issues to three presidential candidates and led the NASA transition team for President Obama. She served as the Deputy Administrator of the Space Agency from 2009 to 2013 and is known as an architect of the new era of commercial partnerships that allow SpaceX to carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. Garver is the founder of the Brooke Owens Fellowship, an internship and mentorship program for collegiate women interested in pursuing space careers. She is the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in Aerospace and has been awarded three NASA Distinguished Service Medals. She lives in Washington, DC. About the Book: “Former NASA official Lori Garver offers a front-row seat to the decades-long struggles within and among space bureaucrats and space billionaires. Bring popcorn, as you bear witness to an untold slice of space history.” —Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist and author of Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier Escaping Gravity is former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver's firsthand account of how a handful of revolutionaries overcame the political patronage and bureaucracy that threatened the space agency. The success of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, and countless other commercial space efforts were preceded by decades of work by a group of people Garver calls “space pirates.” Their quest to transform NASA put Garver in the crosshairs of Congress, the aerospace industry, and hero-astronauts trying to protect their own profits and mythology within a system that had held power since the 1950s. Today's woman grew up participating in more activities than most young people.  She was curious and loved to be a part of things. In her family unit, conversations usually centered around how to leave the world a better place - a burning desire that developed in her as she grew into an adult. The area she began to influence was aerospace and her determination and talent landed her a senior executive spot in the US Space Program. As a Deputy Administrator of NASA, she knew she could bring so much good to the world as she set out to reform the agency. But aerospace was not a place where women were welcomed and being in such a powerful role of influence was not easy. She was sexually harassed and verbally abused but she pushed on. Now others can learn from the wisdom of her journey from her recently released book “Escaping Gravity, My Quest To Transform NASA and Launch A New Space Age.” The story reveals how she defied the status quo as a woman working in a male-dominated field. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Lori Garver.

Are we still in the space age?  It depends on who you ask.  Officially, yes.  But NASA hasn't launched a shuttle in over a decade.  We haven't set foot on a non-earth object in 50 years.  So what's so spacey about the current age?  Privatization, for one.  Everyone's upset at the ultra wealthy multi-billionaires that seem so common these days, but a lot of those billionaires have a keen interest in space, the money to fund it, and the willingness to actually take a risk.  Meanwhile, Congress is still concerned with getting phonographs to work in zero gravity.  That was a joke.  Or was it? Return to Space is an American documentary film made for Netflix and directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. Its story follows Elon Musk's and SpaceX engineers' two-decade mission to send NASA astronauts back to the International Space Station and revolutionize space travel.●Surprisingly good.●The storytelling, ●editing and flashbacks are fantastic.I am no expert, but I love to look at stars, moon, clouds and sunset. I have never had a conversation involve Elon Musk and thought this document about him. But it wasn't. With some appearances here and there, Elon Musk appears to be very passionate, funny, charming and driven. I also like how they allow the scientists and other astronauts to share their thoughts, families rather touching.well done. I learn a lot. I feel smarter too. HahahTruly heart touching and overwhelming to watch spaceX achieve this kind of milestone and gaining a great success in the history of human space flight.i really hope one day flying through space would be accessible to everyone, which is still a dream of many space lovers.Amazing! If all the wealthy people would aim for perfectionism, would have passion for science, respect for humankind, and hunger for knowledge...●Just goosebumps every minute, ●it has emotions, ●mystery and everything packed in for a nerd of space. Some cool facts and theory ▪︎The Space Shuttle program finished with its last mission, STS-135 flown by Atlantis, in July 2011, retiring the final Shuttle in the fleet. The Space Shuttle program formally ended on August 31, 2011.▪︎While reentering Earth's atmosphere, Columbia broke apart, killing the entire crew. All of these factors — high costs, slow turnaround, few customers, and a vehicle (and agency) that had major safety problemsAstronauts often say the reasons humans haven't returned to the lunar surface are budgetary and political hurdles, not scientific or technical challenges. ▪︎Private companies like Blue Origin and SpaceX may be the first entities to return people to the moon▪︎SpaceX was formed by entrepreneur Elon Musk in the hopes of revolutionizing the aerospace industry and making affordable spaceflight a reality. The company entered the arena with the Falcon 1 rocket, a two-stage liquid-fueled craft designed to send small satellites into orbit.▪︎SpaceX scored its first big headline in 2010, when it became the first private company to launch a payload into orbit and return it to Earth intact—something only government agencies like NASA or Russia's Roscosmos had done before. Coming from humble beginnings in a small mining company town (population: ~2,750) just outside of Death Valley National Park, Brooke managed to make a lasting impact on the industry through talent, character, and sheer determination. Always an excellent student – she was valedictorian of her high school class… though she was always quick to point out that there were only two students in her class! – Brooke was an alumna of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the International Space University. Professionally, she worked at the NASA's Johnson Space Center, the non-profit XPRIZE Foundation, the Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation, and the White House Office of Management and Budget. Brooke also committed herself to whole-hearted service. Supporting organizations such as AidChild and Mercy’s Village International, Brooke was passionate about making her world a better place by supporting children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS crisis, ending human trafficking, fighting poverty, and empowering girls and women. Outside of work and her philanthropic efforts, Brooke was a caring, warm, and adventurous spirit. She was an accomplished pilot, and spent many of her happiest moments flying. She found time to go kayaking, run triathlons, become a party DJ, perform at spoken word events, and a million other things. Brooke was the sort of person for whom no amount of time on this Earth would have been enough to do all that she wanted to do. Thankfully, she was also the sort of person who lived life to its fullest, and found joy in every moment.  About Lori Garver: Lori Garver is the former Deputy Administrator of NASA. Prior to her Senate confirmation, she headed the NASA transition team and was the lead space policy advisor to Senator Clinton and Senator Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign. Two years ago, scientists found the first visitor from interstellar space ever spotted inside the solar system. The trajectory of the elongated object, named ʻOumuamua, showed that it originated in an unknown star system that must have ejected it a long time ago. Since then, debates have raged about the formation of this blunt-shaped traveler, including speculation that it is a UFO (note: it's not aliens). “A unified formation theory has yet to comprehensively link all ‘Oumuamua's puzzling characteristics,” said co-authors Yun Zhang, a planetary scientist at the National Astronomical Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Douglas Lin, an astronomer at UC Santa Cruz, in the study. In order to square all of these unusual features, Zhang and Lin ran high-resolution computer simulations of various celestial bodies—such as comets, debris, or even planets—approaching stars. The results predicted that a star about half the size of the Sun could shred large objects into these fragments, some of which would have even more elongated axis ratios than ʻOumuamua (perhaps more of a joint shape than a blunt shape). “Here we show by numerical simulations that ‘Oumuamua-like ISOs can be prolifically produced through extensive tidal fragmentation and ejected during close encounters of their volatile-rich parent bodies with their host stars,” the team added. Link: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/04/spacex-nasa-coronavirus-astronauts/609871/ As the coronavirus pandemic sweeps the United States, SpaceX, on NASA's behalf, is preparing to launch astronauts from the shores of Florida, a first in American spaceflight history. The mission, bound for the International Space Station, is currently scheduled for mid-to-late May. NASA's administrator, Jim Bridenstine, recently acknowledged that the circumstances could eventually delay the launch, but at least for now, the agency is still pushing ahead. Like many other people across the country, most NASA employees are working from home for the foreseeable future. The pandemic has already led the agency to pause development on several programs, including a massive rocket meant to return people to the moon and a giant space telescope designed to be more powerful than Hubble. But the operation of the ISS, as well as the effort to supply it with astronauts, has been deemed “mission essential.” Boeing, the other company involved in this effort, is preparing for a do-over of an uncrewed test mission that went terribly wrong last year, and until that happens, SpaceX is the only American provider that NASA's got—and, aside from some final tests, it seems ready to go. Russia, meanwhile, has scaled back production of its Soyuz spacecraft, anticipating that the U.S. would soon stop buying seats. NASA would prefer not to buy more, anyway. Charlie Bolden, a retired astronaut and the NASA administrator under Barack Obama, supports the agency's decision to press ahead despite the circumstances; the sooner the U.S. ends its reliance on Russia, the better, he told me. Lori Garver, the former NASA deputy administrator under Obama, disagrees. Garver was a steadfast supporter of the program while at the agency—and remains one now—but she's surprised that her former employer is moving ahead with the mission next month. “The space community often considers themselves a different level of somewhat unique and special in not having to adhere to the same rules as others—because what they're doing is so important, it should still be done,” Garver said. “I will not be surprised if the public finds it not what they would view as ‘essential.'” I just think most people will say, ‘Well, people are dying here.'” Show Stuff Join the fan chat on Discord! Just a few years ago, recent college graduate Karina Perez Molina met her first true mentor — former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver, who inspired her to launch full force into a space policy-focused career. Karina landed internships with the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, where she focused on aerospace and STEM initiatives for women.  Karina joined the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) in 2017, and is now in charge of producing the organization’s SGx Keynote Series program at SATELLITE. Over the course of just a few years, SGx has become one of the most popular and beloved programs hosted at the SATELLITE show. The program, co-produced by SGAC and the Future Space Leaders Foundation (FSLF), consists of a series of short TEDx-style keynotes that connect the ideas of students and young professionals with the experience and insight of aerospace industry leaders.  Karina has been managing SGx for a couple of years now, and she’s done a fantastic job bringing together a diverse and interesting group of speakers for the program. One of those speakers is Lori Garver. Karina knows Lori’s speech at SATELLITE 2020 will be just as influential on new audiences as it was on her several years ago. During this episode, Karina and I talk about how and why she got involved with SGAC, how SGx is designed to inspire and keep young professionals motivated, and how she landed the leading actor of hit sci-fi series “The Expanse” as this year’s emcee. For those of you who are interested in learning more about how you can get involved with SGAC, visit the organization’s FAQ website.

On this episode of Talking Space, we return from our two-week summer hiatus to bring you the news of our absence. We start with a discussion of the rapid, four-orbit approach the next ISS resupply vehicle took, Progress 52. In the conversation, we discuss the recent spacesuit failure which resulted in astronaut Luca Parmitano's spacesuit filling with water. Sticking with Russia, we discuss the latest findings of the Proton rocket failure back on July 1st, and talk about the future of Russian rockets and their current reliability. We then discuss some vibration tests that will shake things up in the science world, which came as a result of Ares 1-X. On our second trip around the table, we discuss Lori Garver's comments at the NewSpace convention about going to an asteroid as well as bringing up some budget woes. We then move on to looking at the first trailer for the reboot of the "Cosmos" series. This version with Neil DeGrasse Tyson will air on Fox, but do we think it'll stand up to the original, or can it even be compared? Lastly, we reflect on the Apollo 11 anniversary with some great space pictures.
