Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

In this powerful episode of Shat the Movies, hosts Gene Lyons and Big D, Dick Ebert, journey down under to revisit Peter Weir's 1981 war drama Gallipoli. Commissioned by listener Mac in Texas, this Australian New Wave classic stars a young Mel Gibson and Mark Lee as two spirited athletes drawn into the brutal realities of World War I. The Shat crew reflects on how Gallipoli flips the traditional war movie formula, building deep emotional connections with its characters long before the first shots are fired. From the dusty outback to the trenches of the Dardanelles, Gene and Big D dissect the film's themes of friendship, blind patriotism, and the gut-wrenching cost of war. They also explore how the film balances coming-of-age charm with historical tragedy—right up to its final freeze frame. With heartfelt insights, personal stories, and a few unexpected laughs along the way (yes, venereal diseases and desert treks come up), this episode reminds us why some war films hurt in all the right ways. Plot SummaryGallipoli is a 1981 Australian war drama directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson and Mark Lee. Set during World War I, the film follows two young sprinters from Western Australia—Archie and Frank—who enlist in the Australian Imperial Force and are eventually sent to fight in the doomed Gallipoli campaign. Through their journey, the film explores themes of friendship, national identity, disillusionment, and the tragic futility of war, culminating in one of cinema's most unforgettable endings. Prepare for warp speed as Gene Lyons and Big D travel back to the 24th century—and then to 2063—to review Star Trek: First Contact, the Next Generation crew's darkest and most action-packed cinematic outing. Commissioned by listener Jeremiah as part of a sci-fi classics series, this episode dives deep into the ethics of Picard's command decisions, the practical (and impractical) nature of Borg assimilation, and the horny weirdness of Star Trek fandom. Along the way, Gene and Big D debate Star Trek vs. Star Wars and ponder whether the Borg Queen really does have big “ASMR energy.” They also address critical questions like: What's the best Star Trek tech? And how many wipes does it take to remove Data's synthetic skin? Whether you're Team Trek or Team Wars, this episode is a hilarious, no-holds-barred deep dive into one of the franchise's most beloved films—and possibly its most awkward. Plot Summary In Star Trek: First Contact, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise-E defy Starfleet orders to confront the Borg, a cybernetic collective intent on assimilating Earth. After destroying a Borg cube near Earth, a Borg sphere escapes through a temporal vortex, altering the past to prevent humanity's first contact with alien life. The Enterprise follows the Borg to April 4, 2063—just before Zefram Cochran's historic warp flight that would attract the Vulcans. As the crew works to ensure history stays intact, Picard battles his trauma from past assimilation, while Lieutenant Commander Data is seduced—emotionally and physically—by the sinister Borg Queen. With humanity's future hanging in the balance, Picard must choose between revenge and reason, culminating in a high-stakes confrontation aboard a compromised Enterprise. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

James Cameron takes us two miles under the sea for an intense, visually stunning, and sometimes completely ridiculous deep-sea adventure in The Abyss (1989). This sci-fi classic introduces us to oil-rig roughnecks, paranoid Navy SEALs, and aliens who can manipulate water—but not basic human communication. In this episode, Gene Lyons and Big D dive deep into The Abyss' groundbreaking special effects, the film's unrelenting tension, and Cameron's signature mix of brilliance and insanity. Gene wrestles with his newfound fear of liquid breathing, while Big D wonders how Ed Harris survived a death-defying swim in nothing but a t-shirt. Plus, the hosts debate why James Cameron insists on writing dialogue for blue-collar workers when he's clearly never met one. From nuclear warheads at the bottom of the ocean to CPR-by-slap techniques, The Abyss is a movie that demands discussion. Is it a masterpiece, a mess, or both? Join us as we explore the depths of one of Cameron's most ambitious projects. Plot Summary:  When a U.S. nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in the Caribbean, a team of deep-sea oil drillers led by Virgil "Bud" Brigman (Ed Harris) is recruited to assist a group of Navy SEALs in the recovery mission. As tensions rise between the rig crew and the increasingly unstable SEAL leader, Lt. Hiram Coffey (Michael Biehn), the team discovers they are not alone in the ocean's depths. Dr. Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the rig's designer and Bud's estranged wife, encounters an advanced, non-terrestrial intelligence (NTI) living beneath the waves. Meanwhile, Coffey, suffering from high-pressure nervous syndrome, sets a nuclear warhead to destroy the unknown beings, forcing Bud to embark on a desperate deep-sea dive to disarm it. Battling crushing pressure, limited oxygen, and human paranoia, Bud reaches the warhead, only to face what seems like certain death—until the NTIs intervene. In a breathtaking climax, the aliens reveal themselves, raising their colossal ship to the ocean's surface and leaving humanity with a powerful message of peace. With stunning underwater cinematography, groundbreaking visual effects, and an intense mix of sci-fi, thriller, and adventure, The Abyss remains one of James Cameron's most ambitious and visually spectacular films. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

In this episode, Big D and a very high Gene Lyons break down After Hours' absurd twists, New York's bygone grit, and whether Griffin Dunne is the last true everyman leading man. Along the way, they debate Paul's romantic prospects, the dangers of pre-cell phone nightlife, and whether David Lynch is actually a genius or just weird for weird's sake. Join us as we uncover After Hours' hidden brilliance, discuss why Gene should never be left alone with a paper-mâché kit, and witness the power of 5mg gummies on podcasting. Plot Summary:  What happens when Martin Scorsese trades gangsters for bagel paperweights, punk rockers, and the strangest night in SoHo history? After Hours (1985) takes us on a surreal, darkly comedic odyssey through late-night Manhattan, where a hapless word processor named Paul (Griffin Dunne) just wants to make it home—but the city has other plans. Jackson's unforgettable turn as Zeus Carver to Jeremy Irons' cunning portrayal of Simon Gruber, we break down the film's pacing, action sequences, and that controversial alternate ending. This week, Rob Will Taylor fills in for Dick Ebert to join Gene Lyons in breaking down the 1981 sci-fi thriller Outland, starring Sean Connery. Rob shares why this film is a must-see for Connery fans and '80s sci-fi lovers, while Gene dives into its striking similarities with Alien. Just what does it take to be among Entertainment Weekly's "50 Best High School Movies?" Celebrate Gene! When listener Mike T. heard Shat The Movies desperately wanted to cover "Withnail and I," he stepped up with the funds to make it happen.  On its surface, "Withnail and I" is a simple movie about two out-of-work actors navigating the bleak landscape of 1960s England. Big D didn't realize it was the 1960s; he just thought England looks like that. But this cult classic inspired millions—including Gene Lyons—with its sharp wit, unforgettable quotes and rich character study. In this episode, the Shat Crew dissects the film's themes of friendship, disillusionment and the struggle for identity, all while celebrating the iconic performances of Richard E. Gene Lyons and The King Bee became friends in 1995. Two years later, "The Long Kiss Goodnight" was released on VHS, capturing the heart of a young King Bee who spent the next three decades trying to convince Gene to watch it. For his 44th birthday, Gene was treated to a pizza and a spot on The King Bee's sofa to experience "The Long Kiss Goodnight" for the first time. And it was eye-opening, to say the least. Thanks to listener Jeremiah, the two friends sat down in person, mixed a few old-fashioned cocktails and finally recorded a conversation about what might be Samuel L. Jackson's finest work. They discussed how Gene cannot experience extreme happiness without immediately feeling sorrow. They explored how much fun a family actually can have with produce. They even dove into Craig Bierko's impressive dating history and '90s America's naivety when it came to paramilitary firearms.  Was Geena Davis too old for a shift into sexy action roles? One Shat host is a social justice warrior. The other hates Mel Brooks movies. So "Blazing Saddles" seemed doomed from the start. But there's magic in Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little and the old frontier. Listener Ed took Shat The Movies way back to 1974 for this satirical Western that Gene Lyons argues isn't racist, sexist or even remotely offensive (other than one particular performance). Dick Ebert was impressed with the "real Hollywood Western" feel of the movie, attributing the incredible cast and chemistry to divine intervention, and also the groundbreaking farts. In this episode, the Shat Boys discuss the connection between "Blazing Saddles" and "La Bamba," cheer for Slim Pickens and Harvey Korman and wonder at how cleverly the film breaks the fourth wall. You know those episodes where Gene gets excited and quotes the movie a lot? Yeah, it's one of those. We've all seen that scene from "Perfect" where John Travolta is humping his way through a Jamie Lee Curtis aerobics class, but there's another two hours to this 1985 box-office bomb. And we had to watch all of it. Longtime Shat The Movies beer buddy Scott in Friendswood, Texas, was kind enough to commission a film about Gene Lyons' three favorite topics: journalism, fitness and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Not to be left out, Dick Ebert had lots to say about sex with elite athletes. And Ash got into a car accident. What genre is "Perfect?" Do newsrooms run on self-loathing? Before Arizona was the playground of retired athletes and conservative Californians, it was a quiet, spooky place full of Old West ghosts, dusty roads and alien abductions. We're taking you back to the Travis Walton story with "Fire in the Sky." Released in the same year "The X Files" debuted, "Fire in the Sky" terrified a young Gene Lyons, who went day camping in the same woods where aliens scooped up a logger in 1975, slapped jelly in his mouth and stuck a needle in his eye.  In this episode commissioned by letter carriers Carlos and Natasha, the Shat Crew debates which podcast host is the bravest, when it's OK to leave a friend for dead and why it's so hard to believe aliens exist. Grown-up Gene and Big D see the film's rebel through new eyes. Ash gushes over David Duchovny (who isn't even in this movie), and everyone agrees Travis' friends and family are idiots. "Sneakers" is to Dick Ebert as "Hackers" is to Gene Lyons. This 1992 thriller doesn't have flashy graphics, funky fashions or a techno soundtrack—but it does have Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd and Robert Redford. In loafers. With its playful tone, low barrier to entry and established cast, this gateway thriller appeals to the familiar to explain the cutting-edge. And Big D likes that. "Sneakers" also has unexpected jokes, serious schemes and nostalgic tech. And Gene Lyons likes that. But the movie isn't perfect. Among its flaws are a cavalier treatment of a superweapon, potential abuse of a blind character, unimaginative demands and a smidge too much predictability. Dick Ebert wonders why Damon Wayans wasn't in more movies after filming "Major Payne." Gene Lyons wonders why Damon Wayans was in any more movies after filming "Major Payne." This 1995 comedy featuring the musical stylings of 2 Live Crew and star power of Michael Ironside and Bam Bam Bigelow had us asking what was wrong with Major Payne's romantic interest (Karyn Parsons) and why any director would allow sped-up motion in his movie.  While Gene bemoaned Major Payne's misrepresentation of JROTC, Big D found some nuggets of truth in the movie's tough-love message. When the daughter of a Vietnam veteran asks you to review "Apocalypse Now," you answer the call. Both Gene and Dick agree this movie is epic, but the topic of Marlon Brando's weight sparks an all-out war. This 1979 adaptation of "Heart of Darkness" is both miracle and masterpiece, expertly depicting drug use (Big D verified) and the convoluted crossroads of the Vietnam War (Gene is a bit of an expert.) The attention to detail, recklessness and introspection hit American audiences with a film unlike any they'd seen before, and the shockwaves still resonate on this 2023 podcast. Where Dick Ebert sees a disjointed plot, Gene Lyons sees the direct DNA of Joseph Conrad's groundbreaking novella. And where Gene sees a disappointing ending, Big D tells the story of the John Milius ending that never was.     SUBSCRIBE Android: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACT Email: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Shat The Movies is proud to present the film that scared Dick Ebert straight and drove Gene Lyons to realize he wouldn't last a week in prison: 1983's "Bad Boys." Sean Penn's breakthrough feature film introduced '80s filmgoers to a young Ally Sheedy, a gigantic Clancy Brown and the most dangerous correctional facility in America. It also presented a surprisingly well-developed teen romance, and it taught us all how to use a pillowcase to become barn boss. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses how the "Bad Boys" movie poster steals the movie's thunder, how solitary confinement might not be that bad and how the staff of Rainford Juvenile Correctional facility likely was gambling on death matches between children (even though Big D thinks they were doing an OK job). In our first back-to-back reviews of a film and its sequel, Shat The Movies presents "Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold," the 1986 flop that answers the question: "what if leftover French fries were a movie?" In the second half of listener MoonlitTear's double commission, Gene Lyons boldly declares the movie series that kicked off with "King Solomon's Mines" isn't quite as good as the "Godfather" trilogy. Dick Ebert notes that only four people were credited with the "Lost City" special effects, and both Shat hosts struggle to make sense of an economy that's overflowing with gold but still insists on using slaves. James Earl Jones did his best to rescue this movie as the anchor to the world's worst Dungeons & Dragons party, while Sharon Stone earned herself a Golden Raspberry nomination for returning to her role as Jesse Huston. Was "Lost City" a parable for apartheid or just a terribly misunderstood parody? Listen to this week's podcast and decide for yourself! In our family-friendly, post-Pixar world, it's easy to forget kids of the '90s enjoyed some adult animation—some VERY adult animation. If you're into ultraviolence, overcomplicated plots, fingerbanging, poison kisses and superb boobs, "Ninja Scroll" is the movie for you. Listener Eric C. encouraged "Shat The Movies" to embrace all those things in the Crew's first viewing of this 1993 Japanese animation classic. And boy did we! Along the way, Ash noted the film's influence on "The Matrix," Dick Ebert felt the comic book nostalgia of his youth, and Gene Lyons asked, "Are the Japanese OK?" Other topics on this episode include: Are anime characters Asian? Are some superpowers just too much? Do women anime fans exist? And how should you let down a ninja who offers to save your life with sex? Ahead of Gene Lyons' big day, Dick and Ash share their married-life wisdom as Shat The Movies travels once again to Australia for the 1994 comedy "Muriel's Wedding." As expected, this movie led to some fierce debate between Big D, who detests Muriel's selfishness, and Ash, who simply adores pre-glow-up Toni Collette. But both Shat hosts agreed on the greatness of Abba, unexpected darkness of the film and the ridiculousness of wedding fever. If you love Rhode Island accents, relish period pieces that forget the period and hate Gene Lyons, our "Outside Providence" podcast is the episode for you! As Ash and Big Dildo dig into this 1999 Farrelly Brothers comedy (written, not directed), they discover the limits of Alec Baldwin's acting, question the movie's pointless inclusion of dark scenes and seriously doubt Shawn Hatosy's sexual prowess.  Ash points out that "Outside Providence" marks the tail end of the Age of Prep School Movies. If you've ever wondered how Jean-Claude Van Damme became an international action star, there's one '80s movie you need to see: "Bloodsport." This episode, commissioned by listener Adam from Texas, calls on Gene Lyons' deep martial arts expertise, Ash's opinions on muscle men and Big D's childhood dream of climbing with ninja claws. Along the way, the Shat Crew also discusses the efficacy of fighting monkey style, the utility of eight-minute cinematic flashbacks, training vs. torture, how a referee fits into a full-contact tournament, journalistic integrity in the face of sexy splits, what the Army does when an officer goes AWOL and what the hell Forest Whitaker was doing in this movie. When Hot Sauce Steve won the Shat Fantasy Basketball title, he decided to give back to the Shat community by commissioning the long-overdue '80s werewolf basketball comedy "Teen Wolf." Riding hot on the coattails of "Back to The Future," this low-budget comedy timed its release just right, seizing on Michael J. Fox's superstar status (and the fact Scott Howard is basically Marty McFly). Join Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons as they discuss whether Harold was a responsible dad, whether scoring beer is as hard as the movies make it look and whether Scott's transformation into The Wolf still holds up.  The boys also tackle the ins and outs of wolf sex, question if being a girl's one-and-done is really all that bad and propose streaming services should now offer a soundtrack-swap option. How do you ruin a 1981 comedy featuring the talents of Dennis Quaid, Jack Gilford and Shelley Long? Make it about cavemen, and give Ringo the Starr role. Gene Lyons downed an entire six pack while recording this one, so buckle up. "Caveman" was somehow too childish to be a movie for adults and too adult to be a movie for kids. It had claymation dinosaurs but also a rape scene. It was timid in its surprise lack of surprise boobs yet startlingly evolved on topics of homosexuality and race.  And, of course, this slapstick comedy commissioned by listener Kelly B. generated some unexpected rants including Big D's disappointment in the closed captioning, Gene's understanding of Jane Goodall, genetic diversity among prehistoric peoples of Southern California and Roger Roeper's indictment of Allied Forces in "Saving Private Ryan." The Christopher Guest mockumentary that started it all, "This Is Spinal Tap," blended brilliant musical parodies and absurd non-sequiturs well ahead of its time in 1984. It was so convincing that a  young Gene Lyons and a drunken Ozzy Osbourne thought Spinal Tap was a real band. In this episode, Shat The Movies commissioner Scott H. in Friendswood, Texas, treats Ash to one of her favorite comedies. Consider it a Christmas gift full of amazing one-liners, cringe harmonies, jaw-dropping cameos and a strange sense of heart.  We all remember "it goes to 11," but so many other gags make "This Is Spinal Tap" worth rewatching in 2022: Stonehenge, exploding drummers, flower people, Australians' nightmares and "Big Bottoms." Shat The Movies has brought us so many dynamic pairings: Riggs and Murtaugh, Goose and Maverick, Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons. It's only fair that we reach back to 1977 for the quickest duo to deliver Coors beer from Texarkana to Atlanta: Snowman and The Bandit. "Smokey and The Bandit" triggered an explosion in trucker romanticism, CB radio fetishism and Pontiac Firebird Trans Am sales. Stuntman Hal Needham's directorial debut also gave audiences a fresh look at Jackie Gleason and convinced America (but not Gene) that Sally Field could be hot.  It had everything you could ask for in a bootlegger movie: Jerry Reed songs that literally tell you what's happening on screen, '70s style, sexy cars, Burt Reynolds and inexplicable pit stops. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

We dedicate this Shat The Movies episode to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and the people who love them. Oh, and Pauly Shore fans who feel horribly underserved by our existing catalog. You might think "In The Army Now" offends veterans of the Army and Army Reserve. It's irreverent, inaccurate, and inappropriate. But at least one Shat warfighter, The Colonel, finds it surprisingly ingenious.  Among the cheap gags, inexplicable plot holes, and strange takes on sexuality is a movie showcasing a young Andy Dick, a sorta hot (according to Ash) Pauly Shore, and a pre-"Tank Girl" Lori Petty. There are some smarts, like an "Of Mice and Men" allusion, and some flat-out funny scenes, like a hilarious attack on a Libyan SCUD site. How will the Shat Crew ultimately rule on this movie? The results surprised Gene Lyons. In this podcast, you'll also hear about Big D's experiences in Basic Training, Gene's regrets about not serving, and Ash's queries about the military's water filtration needs. We also cover Dear John letters, Defense Directive 1304.26, and what it means to be "barracks hot."  SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/social-media CONTACT Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Website: http://shatthemovies.com Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCAST Commission Movie: http://shatthemovies.com/support Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: http://shatthemovies.com/venmo Shop Merchandise: http://shatthemovies.com/shop Our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Boobs. "Species" is a movie about boobs: great boobs, alien boobs, killer boobs, gooey boobs. But the 1995 movie that introduced the world to Natasha Henstridge is so much more. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Most Shat films can only hope to be as funny now as the day they were released. "Office Space" might actually have gotten funnier over the years. That's probably because we're grown-ups now and can relate to commuting, quitting a job, getting laid off, and regurgitating corporate buzzwords.  In this episode, commissioned by listener Don Sauce, you'll hear career advice from Gene Lyons, music advice from Ash, and why Big D will never leave his job.  The Shat Crew also covers toxic positivity, Gene's workplace tantrums, Ash's fear of Y2K, past lovers, and the surprising role Jennifer Aniston played in getting "Office Space" made. Our "Sundown" Deep Dive explores the breakneck pace and refreshing attitude of Lovecraft Country's debut episode. We examine the racist legacy of H.P Lovecraft, the legendary voice of James Baldwin, and the principle of "othering." A voicemail about "The Green Book" takes Gene Lyons to task, and listener letters highlight the history of Chicago's Bronzeville, the concept of "struggle movies," the contrast of eldritch horror vs. Jim Crow horror, and the use sci-fi and horror as genres to tackle bigotry. Ash teaches us about weird fiction, Denmark Vesey, and how to pronounce Cthulhu. Letitia and Atticus shine in their many splendid F*** YOUs. And The King Bee provides a handy overview of Edgar Rice Burroughs characters who appear in Episode 1. Lovecraft Country Episode 1 Summary: Veteran and pulp-fiction aficionado Atticus Freeman travels from the Jim Crow South to his South Side of Chicago hometown in search of his missing father Montrose. After recruiting his uncle George and childhood friend Letitia to join him, the trio sets out for “Ardham,” MA, where they think Montrose may have gone looking for insight into Atticus’ late mother’s ancestry. As they journey across the Midwest, Tic, Leti, and George encounter dangers lurking at every turn, especially after sundown. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

These dark times call for dark movies, and '80s comedies didn't get any darker than "Heathers." The Winona Ryder and Christian Slater box office flop found a way to laugh at  teenage suicide, bulimia, date rape, homosexuality, religion, hypocrisy, cynicism, sex and murder in a way that made Big D blush. Gene Lyons and Ashley Schlafly join Shat The Movies to relive their high school years, forced emotional outpourings, and Shannen Doherty's face on this episode commissioned by longtime listener Dan Fletcher and spooky podcaster Carmelita Valdez McKoy.   How did Stanley Kubrick impact "Heathers"? Was the pep rally scene inspiration for "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Why did young Ashley own a monocle? And most importantly: Is Heathers a truly groundbreaking film or just a cult classic. Find out in this week's "Shat The Movies." Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Can you fly, sucka? It’s time to load up our 1980’s era Japanese pick-up truck with vault poles and fishing dynamite as we head to the desert town of Perfection, Nevada for the scariest game of “hot lava” with giant landshar—um—graboids. As a birthday present to himself, listener Mac E commissioned the 1990 cult horror-comedy film, Tremors, that spawned SIX(!) direct-to-video sequels as well as a short-lived television show. Ashley Schlafly joins desert natives Gene Lyons & the King Bee as they explore Kevin Bacon’s sex appeal, the town economy, and earthworm anatomy. Additionally, learn why the studio delayed the film for 2 months, ensuring Tremors would be played on basic cable for the next 30 years. After the review, be sure to stick around for some of the strangest shat-outs we’ve ever received. These topics, and so much more, on this week’s episode of Shat The Movies. Ashley Schlafly explains the poem behind the episode's title and reaches back to Ancient Rome to illustrate the predicament Caleb is facing. Gene Lyons celebrates Westworld's vision of future tech: personal assistants, predictive models, augmented-reality glasses, artificial intelligence, drip implants, and of course that one stupid ambulance. The Shat Crew also looks into Charlotte's self-mutilation, chunky metal balls, Serac's identity, and Jamaican riot robots.  Listen to more great music from Simon: www.soundcloud.com/simonsteric Westworld Episode 3 Summary:"The Absence of Field" The Charlotte host learns Serac is attempting to take over Delos via a mole within the company. Shat on TV's coverage of Westworld Season 3, Episode 2: "The Winter Line" starts off intelligently with discussions of free will vs sentience, the nuance between hero and villain, and Ashley Schlafly's brilliant overview of Louis Althusser's views of subjection and the state. Things take a turn as Dick Ebert unveils his latest treatise: "Rahobo, The God Humans Need," force-feeding Gene enough tinfoil to spark a Divergence. Suddenly, it's Big D worshipping at the altar of Coconut Guy, Gene Lyons offering to kill Dick to save the world, Ashley classifying Serac's accoutrement as "Bond Villain," an extended team giggle-fest, and the Shat Boys getting way to specific about Westworld's timelines. Listen to more great music from Simon: www.soundcloud.com/simonsteric Westworld Episode 2 Summary: "The Winter Line"Bernard returns to Westworld and discovers the Ashley host is still functioning. With Ashley's help, they find the Maeve host, but it is lacking its "pearl" and that it is no longer in the park. Bernard uses the systems there to verify that Dolores had not contaminated his code, and discovers Dolores targeted several prior park guests including Liam. He reprograms Ashley to help protect him as they return to the mainland. Maeve is rescued from Warworld by Hector but realizes this is another narrative and kills herself to come to in Operations, discovering Lee is alive and wants to help get her to the Forge. However, Maeve soon realizes that this is all a virtual simulation, and after testing its bounds, is able to break her pearl free from its real-world location, but guards stop the attempt. She wakes in a real-world host body and meets Serac, who, after initially thinking she was the major disruption on the system he built, wants her help to stop Dolores.
