This 1992 thriller doesn't have flashy graphics, funky fashions or a techno soundtrack—but it does have Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd and Robert Redford. In loafers. With its playful tone, low barrier to entry and established cast, this gateway thriller appeals to the familiar to explain the cutting-edge. And Big D likes that. "Sneakers" also has unexpected jokes, serious schemes and nostalgic tech. And Gene Lyons likes that. But the movie isn't perfect. Among its flaws are a cavalier treatment of a superweapon, potential abuse of a blind character, unimaginative demands and a smidge too much predictability. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" might be the movie the Shat crew was born to cover: Gene's a career journalist. Ash launched an entire podcast on addiction and recovery. And Big D really, really, really likes hallucinogens. So it's no surprise we had a lot to say about Johnny Depp's unforgettable performance as Hunter S. Thompson chronicling an insane assignment at Las Vegas motorcycle race. The surprise came in how much meaning we found—more than two decades later—in a film largely dismissed as disorganized, unfocused, pointless, and immature. "Fear and Loathing" changed listener Kipp's life enough to warrant a Shat The Movies commission, and it gave all three Shat hosts a lot to think about—even if some of those things were a bloated Benicio del Toro, a balding Tobey Maguire, the deep symbolism of vomit-covered cars, or the many nights chemicals erased from our memories. Maeve, following leads from Serac, tracks Dolores's movements after arriving on the mainland to the Yakuza boss Sato, discovering him to appear the same as the Samurai World host Musashi. Bernard and Ashley, believing Liam to be a host swapped by Dolores, try to abduct him from a charity event, but Dolores and Caleb stop them. While Dolores fights off Ashley and Caleb chases down Liam, Bernard realizes Martin is the swapped host. William, Bernard, and Maeve recognize that Dolores made host copies of herself before leaving Westworld and placed them in the Charlotte, Martin, and Sato hosts as to fight back against Serac. Sato wounds Maeve and leaves her for dead, while Charlotte has William committed to a mental institution. Do you remember your first DVD? "Shat The Movies" listener Ken C. does. Most "Shat The Movies" episodes are commissioned by listeners who want to hear us revisit films they love. “The Natural” belongs in any debate over the best sports movie ever. When "Shat The Movies" listener Lucas discovered we wouldn't be doing a Best of Jewish Mob Movies category, he took matters into his own hands. "Gleaming The Cube" brought skateboard culture to the big screen with one of the weirdest plots we've seen to date: A skater Christian Slater investigates the accidental murder of his adopted Vietnamese brother while Tony Hawk delivers pizza. The villains are stereotypical. The action scenes defy the laws of physics. The blood looks more like Kool-Aid, and the romance is just plain creepy. But there's something about "Gleaming The Cube" that's made it a cult classic despite what Big D calls a conspiracy to keep it hidden from the world. Kerri Gross regrets voting for this movie dozens of times from different computers. Roger Roeper defends it as an accurate depiction of skateboarders' lifestyle, and Dick Ebert wishes the Shat Score could go even higher to express what a turd it was.
