Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week, Rob Will Taylor fills in for Dick Ebert to join Gene Lyons in breaking down the 1981 sci-fi thriller Outland, starring Sean Connery. Often described as "High Noon in space," this overlooked gem takes us to Jupiter's moon Io, where a hard-nosed marshal uncovers corruption, drug smuggling, and explosive (sometimes literally) consequences. Rob shares why this film is a must-see for Connery fans and '80s sci-fi lovers, while Gene dives into its striking similarities with Alien. Tune in for lively debates on head explosions, corporate greed and Sean Connery's on-screen marriages—or lack thereof. Did Outland age like fine space wine or burn out faster than a rogue asteroid? Just what does it take to be among Entertainment Weekly's "50 Best High School Movies?" According to "Just One of The Guys," a film needs to be horny, depict decent journalism and have a jaw-dropping fight scene. Bonus points for cross-dressing. This 1985 adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" shocked Dick Ebert with its depictions of a boys locker room, delighted Gene Lyons with its outlandish characters and ventured dangerously close to cringe with a surprise James Brown reference. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

For years, Dick Ebert has been crowing about "Cloak & Dagger" — the video game angle, the spycraft, the majesty of the San Antonio River Walk. Now it's time to see if this 1984 version of a children's movie still holds up. Starring the late Dabney Coleman, "Cloak & Dagger" transports us to a world where boys kill grown men, berets stop bullets and little girls can carry bombs through airport security. If all this sounds fun, it is. But there's a sadder side to "Cloak & Dagger." It's a film that made the Shat Crew realize Henry Thomas was doomed to always play a child from a broken home, some guys get to swear sweatpants to work and the parents of Gen X didn't care very much about their children. Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons break down the 2009 Oscar hopeful starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. After his 27-year imprisonment and subsequent election as President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela faced the task of unifying a country divided by race. Only months after the end of Apartheid, divisions still exist between the country's whites and blacks, something Mandela notices during an international rugby match. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

One Shat host is a social justice warrior. The other hates Mel Brooks movies. So "Blazing Saddles" seemed doomed from the start. But there's magic in Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little and the old frontier. Listener Ed took Shat The Movies way back to 1974 for this satirical Western that Gene Lyons argues isn't racist, sexist or even remotely offensive (other than one particular performance). Dick Ebert was impressed with the "real Hollywood Western" feel of the movie, attributing the incredible cast and chemistry to divine intervention, and also the groundbreaking farts. In this episode, the Shat Boys discuss the connection between "Blazing Saddles" and "La Bamba," cheer for Slim Pickens and Harvey Korman and wonder at how cleverly the film breaks the fourth wall. You know those episodes where Gene gets excited and quotes the movie a lot? Yeah, it's one of those. "Krush Groove" is the sort of '80s oddity that can't quite be categorized. Is it a musical? A comedy? A collection of music videos with dialogue sprinkled in between? This time capsule captured rap's infancy and changed the way Big D speaks. This week's episode, commissioned by listener David B., gave us a newfound respect for Run-DMC, The Fat Boys and, oddly enough, "Purple Rain." We've all seen that scene from "Perfect" where John Travolta is humping his way through a Jamie Lee Curtis aerobics class, but there's another two hours to this 1985 box-office bomb. And we had to watch all of it. Longtime Shat The Movies beer buddy Scott in Friendswood, Texas, was kind enough to commission a film about Gene Lyons' three favorite topics: journalism, fitness and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Not to be left out, Dick Ebert had lots to say about sex with elite athletes. And Ash got into a car accident. What genre is "Perfect?" Do newsrooms run on self-loathing? How is 2024 gym etiquette different from 40 years earlier, and did we need so much footage of Jamie Lee Curtis driving? Find out for yourself in this week's episode of Shat The Movies. Shat The Movies didn't invent sexual perversion, edgy attitudes and impeccable taste in music, we just perfected it. More than 25 years earlier, Christian Slater inspired teens to "talk hard" in the 1990 box office bomb "Pump Up The Volume." Ash was delighted when listener Eric commissioned this coming-of-age movie to highlight his belief in the power of listening. Dick Ebert viewed it from a parent's perspective, and Gene was aghast at Happy Harry Hard-on's terrible microphone discipline.  As the Shat Crew debate whether a teen can suffer in the affluent suburbs, they touch on the King of Teen Angst, rites of passage, how to unmask a pirate-radio host, microwave explosions and whether "Pump Up The Volume" is just "Footloose" minus the dancing. Shat The Movies takes its anglophilia to a new level with an English commissioner, an English guest host and a movie that epitomizes the English film renaissance: "Four Weddings and a Funeral." The Shat Crew also explores the tragic tale of Charlotte Coleman, the charm of Hugh Grant and Ash's favorite sex scene ever.  In this episode, Gene assumes Dick Ebert's mantle of Curious Average American Guy, asking about British phone habits, whether viewers are supposed to hate Andie MacDowell and how sleeping at pubs works. What more do you want from Christmas than some warm fuzzies, friends returning from afar and the miracle of Shat The Movies covering another film from the new millennium? Maybe some Will Farrell. "Elf" is the rare movie that old people like Dick Ebert and young people like Ash's kids can equally enjoy. It's timeless, hilarious, a bit optimistic and a clever nod to the Christmas classics that came before. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses Zooey Deschanel's singing, the perils of an all-sugar diet, New York City peaking in 2005, what makes a good Christmas movie, whether we're losing our holiday spirit, the "Elf" test ending that bombed, Central Park Rangers and the national treasures that are Bob Newhart and the late James Caan. What do "The Quick and the Dead" and NBA Jam have in common? Is loose clothing appropriate for quick-draw competitions? How many flashbacks is too many?  Commissioner Edwin instructed the Shat Crew to drink a few beers and have fun with this episode, and we were happy to oblige. Technically, Big D drank decaf coffee, but Gene made up for it with a few Red Trolleys.  Along the way, Dick Ebert offered explosives advice and narrated "The Quick and the Dead" camera movement. If you made a mashup of Shat The Movies films, "The Blood of Heroes" might be the result. Rutger Hauer returns to a dark, wet dystopia in this 1989 sci-fi cult classic that spawned the real-life game of Jugger and reminded Dick Ebert of all the niche sports he discovered in the early days of the pandemic.  "The Blood of Heroes" piqued the Shat Crew's curiosity in a way few movies have, leading to questions about post-apocalyptic aristocracy, water conservation, armor design, measuring time in stones, nerd dream girls and the logistic of carrying large furniture as luggage. "Sneakers" is to Dick Ebert as "Hackers" is to Gene Lyons. This 1992 thriller doesn't have flashy graphics, funky fashions or a techno soundtrack—but it does have Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd and Robert Redford. In loafers. With its playful tone, low barrier to entry and established cast, this gateway thriller appeals to the familiar to explain the cutting-edge. And Big D likes that. "Sneakers" also has unexpected jokes, serious schemes and nostalgic tech. And Gene Lyons likes that. But the movie isn't perfect. Among its flaws are a cavalier treatment of a superweapon, potential abuse of a blind character, unimaginative demands and a smidge too much predictability. Shat The Movies is proud to present the film that scared Dick Ebert straight and drove Gene Lyons to realize he wouldn't last a week in prison: 1983's "Bad Boys." Sean Penn's breakthrough feature film introduced '80s filmgoers to a young Ally Sheedy, a gigantic Clancy Brown and the most dangerous correctional facility in America. It also presented a surprisingly well-developed teen romance, and it taught us all how to use a pillowcase to become barn boss. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses how the "Bad Boys" movie poster steals the movie's thunder, how solitary confinement might not be that bad and how the staff of Rainford Juvenile Correctional facility likely was gambling on death matches between children (even though Big D thinks they were doing an OK job). In our first back-to-back reviews of a film and its sequel, Shat The Movies presents "Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold," the 1986 flop that answers the question: "what if leftover French fries were a movie?" In the second half of listener MoonlitTear's double commission, Gene Lyons boldly declares the movie series that kicked off with "King Solomon's Mines" isn't quite as good as the "Godfather" trilogy. Dick Ebert notes that only four people were credited with the "Lost City" special effects, and both Shat hosts struggle to make sense of an economy that's overflowing with gold but still insists on using slaves. James Earl Jones did his best to rescue this movie as the anchor to the world's worst Dungeons & Dragons party, while Sharon Stone earned herself a Golden Raspberry nomination for returning to her role as Jesse Huston. We all remember the big explosions and daring stunts in "Speed," but some of the biggest risks had nothing to do with the on-screen mayhem. Hiring Ted "Theodore" Logan as an action star? Casting Jeff Daniels as a grizzled police vet? Letting Dennis Hopper anywhere near explosives? Mega-commissioner Jackson M. thought it just wasn't right for us to review "Speed 2" without covering the original, and we were more than happy to oblige. This nonstop thriller is Jan de Bont's solo directorial debut and the film that made Sandra Bullock America's mid-90s sweetheart. It's also a motion picture that displays zero concept of Los Angeles traffic and makes an excellent case for just paying off terrorists. In this edition of Shat The Movies, Dick Ebert revisits his Blockbuster Video homage to Ron Jeremy and attempts to imitate a person of color for the third episode in a row. What do you get the mermaid fanatic who has everything? Might we suggest Dick Ebert discussing the sex lives of cryptids and Gene drooling over Daryl Hannah? It's 1984's "Splash!" In this episode celebrating listener Stephanie Q's birthday, the Shat Crew praises one of the few '80s slow-motion scenes that works, applauds surprisingly well-developed characters, and worries about how long Tom Hanks would survive under the sea.  "Splash" was Touchstone Pictures' first release, allowing Disney to flex some of its adult muscles, and we're grateful. It gave us the chance to talk about The King Bee ghosting Gene on their movie date, Eugene Levy typifying the incels of the '80s, and "The Boys" venturing into utterly unwatchable territory. Through it all, we witnessed a terrific protagonist in Allen Bauer, who had his priorities straight and dove headlong into love.  SUBSCRIBE Android: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACT Email: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

"Great song ... great masks ... the plan sucks." That's how Dick Ebert summed up the infamous bait-and-switch horror classic "Halloween III: Season of The Witch," a movie that taught us what happens when you take the slasher out of a slasher series. Rob in Colchester commissioned this 1982 film, recorded a jingle for it and shared his mind-blowing theories on why a super-hot, grieving daughter would bang an alcoholic doctor, why TV stations would take orders from that doctor and why killer androids let him live. In this episode, Gene learns about Mr. Beast and immediate hates him. Big D teaches us how to punch dolphins, and Ash wonders what Irishness has to do with the Halloween franchise. The Shat Crew also praises the realness of Halloween III's black characters, suggests casting Jeff Goldblum instead of Tom Atkins and explores the drop-off in kids watching TV. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

In our family-friendly, post-Pixar world, it's easy to forget kids of the '90s enjoyed some adult animation—some VERY adult animation. If you're into ultraviolence, overcomplicated plots, fingerbanging, poison kisses and superb boobs, "Ninja Scroll" is the movie for you. Listener Eric C. encouraged "Shat The Movies" to embrace all those things in the Crew's first viewing of this 1993 Japanese animation classic. And boy did we! Along the way, Ash noted the film's influence on "The Matrix," Dick Ebert felt the comic book nostalgia of his youth, and Gene Lyons asked, "Are the Japanese OK?" Other topics on this episode include: Are anime characters Asian? Are some superpowers just too much? Do women anime fans exist? And how should you let down a ninja who offers to save your life with sex? Can a movie that scandalized America in 1994 continue to shock us today? Not really, but Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers" still has a lot going for it: a perfectly composed cast, a kickass soundtrack and incredible chemistry between Juliette Lewis and Woody Harrelson.  With Quentin Tarantino's fingerprints all over it, "Natural Born Killers" spans everything from sensationalized murders to sweat lodges and somehow manages to effortlessly serve up a love story in the mix.  In this episode, the Shat Crew explores the movie's haphazard use of black-and-white shots that look like they came from a rowboat, why Blockbuster Video employees hated Oliver Stone, Dick Ebert's rules for mushrooms, how artists change when they're clean and why all bald men should shave their heads. Shat The Movies has brought us so many dynamic pairings: Riggs and Murtaugh, Goose and Maverick, Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons. It's only fair that we reach back to 1977 for the quickest duo to deliver Coors beer from Texarkana to Atlanta: Snowman and The Bandit. "Smokey and The Bandit" triggered an explosion in trucker romanticism, CB radio fetishism and Pontiac Firebird Trans Am sales. Stuntman Hal Needham's directorial debut also gave audiences a fresh look at Jackie Gleason and convinced America (but not Gene) that Sally Field could be hot.  It had everything you could ask for in a bootlegger movie: Jerry Reed songs that literally tell you what's happening on screen, '70s style, sexy cars, Burt Reynolds and inexplicable pit stops. But does "Smokey and The Bandit" hold up as a comedy with a pinch of romance? You might be surprised. Scott's portrayal of General George S. Patton, what was so terrible about Junior ROTC, how TikTok could have saved Bunker Hill Academy, and why young Gene Lyons always had a coin up his ass. “12 Monkeys” has something for every member of the Shat Crew: An edgy, smart director for Ash, time travel for Dick Ebert, and loads of man butts for Gene. But is it the slick, mind-blowing film we remember from 1995, or does it fall flat in a post-pandemic America? As the Month of Steve continues, we dig into some tinfoil territory, questioning the nature of reality, whether the powers that be would ruin the world to stay in control, and whether Brad Pitt really deserved that Golden Globe. Is Dr. Reilly one of the worst sidekicks in movie history? Is the “12 Monkeys” score one of the most underappreciated compositions of the ‘90s? Everyone's been waiting for Dick Ebert to review a Wes Anderson movie. Today is that day. Will Shat The Movies' everyman embrace the whimsy and sophistication of "Rushmore," or will our red-blooded podcast elder scoff at the pretentious eccentricity of a wannabe auteur? Calling Anderson the "Beck of directors," Big D questions whether he hates the "Rushmore" director or hates himself. Ash explains his distinct style of filming, and Gene argues that Jason Schwartzman's Max is a real dick. They all agree on one point: Bill Murray is absolutely wonderful in this movie. In this episode, the Shat Crew also share a vocabulary lesson, analyze Anderson's use of slow motion, listen while Gene does math, and debate whether Max's stage productions help or hurt the movie overall. Some say Paul Newman is the greatest actor of all time. Some say Martin Scorsese is the greatest director of all time. And some say "The Color of Money" is his greatest film.  We are not those people. But the Shat Crew is mature enough to appreciate a film with sets you can smell, jaw-dropping performances, and the magic of a young Tom Cruise.  In this edition, we discuss how "The Color of Money" influenced other gambling movies ("Rounders," anyone?) and brought out Dick Ebert's inner detective. Ash explores the art of the hustle, and Gene defines the line between games and sports. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" might be the movie the Shat crew was born to cover: Gene's a career journalist. Ash launched an entire podcast on addiction and recovery. And Big D really, really, really likes hallucinogens. So it's no surprise we had a lot to say about Johnny Depp's unforgettable performance as Hunter S. Thompson chronicling an insane assignment at Las Vegas motorcycle race. The surprise came in how much meaning we found—more than two decades later—in a film largely dismissed as disorganized, unfocused, pointless, and immature. "Fear and Loathing" changed listener Kipp's life enough to warrant a Shat The Movies commission, and it gave all three Shat hosts a lot to think about—even if some of those things were a bloated Benicio del Toro, a balding Tobey Maguire, the deep symbolism of vomit-covered cars, or the many nights chemicals erased from our memories. We all love Dick Ebert, but giving him what he wants isn't always the best idea. Big D is a man of strange appetites who suffered through a childhood that left him wishing he could travel time to make friends. And his obsession with "Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann" was bound to end in disaster. Listener Shawn Green generously commissioned this review of the 1982 sci-fi cult classic as a gift to the Shat Crew. Gene was pumped to see Lyle Swann's sweet Yamaha motorcycle in action. Roger was excited to compare yet another movie to "Star Wars," and Dick yearned to be reunited with Belinda Bauer, the subject of his first self-stimulation experience. What followed was a lesson in woman-on-man sexual assault, the creative genius of Mike from The Monkees, a bizarre skinny-dipping scene, some incredibly bad marksmanship, terrified Mexicans, and every kind of causal loop wrapped into 100 minutes of film powered by 30 minutes of actual material. It's weird. It's wild. And it's perfect for Shat The Movies.  SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/ HELP SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Get Podcast Merchandise: http://shatthemovies.com/shop Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Listener John Enright asked Shat The Movies a year ago to put the Best of John Cusack up for a vote. Then he waited month after month and heard nothing: no "Say Anything," no "Grosse Pointe Blank," no "Sixteen Candles." Fed up, Enright decided to grease the skis of justice with some hard-earned cash and three words everyone had been dying to hear: "Better Off Dead." Big D nearly fainted. Gene Lyons squealed. Roger asked, "Is that the one with the boombox?" "Better Off Dead" truly is a movie that would not get made today: a little-known short-film director named Savage Steve casting an obscure young actor in a lead role about teen suicide, featuring Korean drag racers who only speak Howard Cosell, possible exchange student sex slavery, and stop-motion dancing hamburgers? What could be more '80s? This warm blanket of nostalgia took us back to Dick Ebert's childhood memories of collecting G.I. Joe Flag Points and throwing piss bombs from his third-floor video gaming nest. And it unearthed Roger's woeful tale of the breakup that ruined him for life. Meanwhile, Gene tells listeners why jumping is a terrible way to kill yourself and Old Man Dick Ebert rails against paperboy Johnny and his quest for $2.  SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/ HELP SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Get Podcast Merchandise: http://shatthemovies.com/shop Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Do you remember your first DVD? "Shat The Movies" listener Ken C. does. And he forked out the dollars to share it with you.  "Ronin" was a throwback movie even on the day it was released, feeling more like 1968 than 1998. It was prime Robert De Niro before he started his string of comedies, and it was legendary director John Frankenheimer's final picture, an ode to all his car-chase spectaculars that came before. Reverence for a bygone era aside, the Shat Crew couldn't help but notice some bumps in the picturesque French roads of "Ronin." Abundant MacGyver tricks, rampant Michael Bayisms, questionable Irish accents, Teflon bullets, and dad-fashion euro dudes. If ever Dick Ebert sparkled on the "Shat The Movies" review, "Ronin" was it. Big D shares Army stories, breaks down the epic ambush scene, mourns Princess Di, and cringes at French police cars too small to fit his 6'7" frame.  Here's to a movie that threw CGI aside, illustrated the beauty of France, and said farewell to one of the greatest car-chase directors of all time. Enjoy. This isn't just a podcast about '80s movies; it's a podcast about FEELINGS. Or at least three guys' ideas on cheating, romantic comedies, and home inspections. Listener Joe in Alexandria, VA, commissioned 1986's "The Money Pit," in which Tom Hanks plays the same role he played in every '80s movie and Shelly Long is 100% swappable with Shelly Duvall.  In this episode of Shat The Movies, we explore: horrible '80s hair Brazilian weddings America's obsession with big houses ice cream shop chic and the ubiquity of Euro weirdos in '80s movies. Roger Roeper shares his theories on romance. Gene Lyons discusses the psychological sensitivity of his erections. Dick Ebert laments movies with self-referencing theme songs. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Most "Shat The Movies" episodes are commissioned by listeners who want to hear us revisit films they love. But this one was commissioned by a podcaster who wanted to hear us cover one of Big D's favorite movies.  Drew Zakmin, of "One Headlight Podcast," shelled out a few bucks and opened the gates to Michael Bay's greatest cinematic achievement, 1996's "The Rock." It's got everything we've come to expect from a Michael Bay film: explosions, rain, patriotic slow-mo, and even groups of guys in wheelchairs.  "The Rock" is utterly mindless summer popcorn fun, but we're not complaining. Dick Ebert sees the beauty in side characters that gently tug on racial and sexual stereotypes. Gene Lyons takes care to praise the perfect amount of Nicholas Cage-ness while respecting the real star of this movie: the always-destined-to-die-while-wearing-a-headset Michael Biehn. And Roger Roeper explores the bizarre Goonies underbelly of Alcatraz.  If you're a fan of using science to kill rogue Marines, don't like soft-ass shit, and want to see the Sexiest Man Alive in one of his most famous roles, this is the movie for you. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week, we bid happy retirement to a listener to got the shaft from his employer, then realized he already had enough money to retire. Rob P. has been a longtime listener of both Shat on TV and Shat The Movies, and his film commission is nothing short of stellar. Boldly going where no Shatter has gone before, Rob chose a movie released in the final week of the '90s. And though "Galaxy Quest" never broke the top 5 in the box office, it might be the greatest sci-fi parody of all time. Gene Lyons, Roger Roeper, and Dick Ebert break down the difference between Trekkies and Trekkers, celebrate Galaxy Quest's outstanding casting, and contemplate the proper approach to sex with aliens. Rog and Gene also swap tales from Comic-Con, with Gene recounting how he stole from Lou Ferrigno and Rog worshipping Alec Baldwin's blue-collar roots.  And, of course, we had to imitate Thermians and talk about boobs. Because we're adults. Shat The Movies listener Valorie commissioned "The Sandlot" thinking she would get a podcast about the 1993 coming-of-age baseball classic. Instead, she got a curveball with a little mustard on it as hosts Roger Roeper and Dick Ebert retell their glorious softball history that spans from Singaporean caning to Big D's dribblers to the plate.  Meanwhile, Gene Lyons goes full Social Justice Warrior as he decries Squints' devious assault on Wendy Peffercorn and laments the incomprehensibly cruel treatment of The Beast. This episode of Shat The Movies also covers when to call your stepdad "dad," whether a man should have to endure his replacement touching his dog, Major League segregation, nicotine gum pranks, and who should have been cast instead of James Earl Jones. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

The story behind this week's commissioned film review could be a movie of its own: The loving wife of a northern England postman secretly saves the money to hire three misfit Americans to surprise him with a podcast about one of his favorite flicks. But what she doesn't tell them is watching "Videodrome" will cause unexpected changes in their minds and bodies! Dick Ebert immediately begins have strange nightmares. Roger Roeper begins seeing political conspiracies. And Gene Lyons feels the sudden need for sadomasochistic context to achieve an erection. What else would you expect from a David Cronenberg cult classic starring a young James Woods and a surprisingly gripping performance from Blondie vocalist Deborah Harry. Big thanks to Shat The Movies listeners Jo and Jim for choosing a movie we had never seen and certainly won't be able to forget. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

The original Shat The Movies trio is back! Roger Roeper joins Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons to review the dystopian Detroit crime classic "Robocop." Like most Paul Verhoeven movies, "Robocop" has spoof commercials, gratuitous violence, and co-ed shower scenes. But this 1987 relief carries the distinct honor of being the Dutch director's most coherent blend of action and satire. And it's oh-so-quotable. If you've ever wondered what was on the X-rated version, why ED-209 was so violent, or whether Officer Lewis had the hots for Officer Murphy, this is the podcast for you. "The Bells" should have been the triumphant climax for "Game of Thrones." It was the battle we all were waiting for. The good guys finally made it to King's Landing, and justice would be done. But "Game of Thrones" Season 8, Episode 5 gave fans something different: a look at the horrors of war, the power of legacy, and the unsatisfying end to some of our favorite characters. Sunday was the day many viewers said "enough," but a small contingent said, "Let's take a second look." And some even said, "We don't want justice. We want destruction." Join Gene Lyons and Dick Ebert as they debate whether Daenerys is truly a Mad Queen or simply a brutal conqueror who is perfectly sane. Examine which deaths were deserved and what happens now that the fires have turned to ash. Learn more about character arcs and why some of them feel less gratifying than others. And, of course, we've gotta talk about that Euron's and Jaime's Knife Party at The Cove. Game of Thrones' penultimate episode, "The Bells," was either one of the coolest things you've ever seen or a sure sign that HBO has completely lost control of George R.R. Martin's incomparable realm.  Old scores were settled, true natures were revealed, and the entire CGI budget was spent. Gene Lyons loved it. Dick Ebert threw his hands up in frustration. This week, our Best Of series takes us back in time to review one of the rare movies Roger Roeper, Dick Ebert, and I all agreed on: "Back to The Future." If you recently saw "Avengers: Endgame," you know "Back to The Future" is utter bullshit. And if you haven't seen "Back to The Future," you really should. "Conan The Barbarian" is a special moment in Shat The Movies history. It's one of Dick Ebert's shining moments and the episode that made Kerri Gross realize she loves Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. Kerri Gross prayed for it, and listener CarmelitaValdezMcKoy answered. We’re reviewing the 1985 oddity “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.” This groundbreaking movie made Paul Reubens a star, put Tim Burton on the map, and was the first time Oingo Boingo's Danny Elfman worked with Burton on an irresistible film score. Gene Lyons argues “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” is the most memorable movie of all time. Who could forget Pee-wee’s legendary bike, Large Marge, Dee Snyder, the singing hobo, the pet shop, or the fact Jimmy Smits was not in this movie? The Shat Crew touches on Pee-wee’s adult-theater arrest, the failure of Pee-wee sequels, and whether hitch hiking is an Out West thing or a Florida thing. Kerri recalls seeing Pee-wee live while sitting between Andy Dick and Corey Feldman. Dick Ebert asks how this film is so funny when it shouldn’t be. And Gene applauds Pee-wee’s glorious ensemble ending.  Help Support the Podcast Support with Paypal – http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Support With Venmo – https://venmo.com/ShatPodcasts Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link – https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20  Sponsor’s Listener Survey – http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review – http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies – http://shatthemovies.com/vote Subscribe & Social Media – http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail – (914) 719-SHAT – (914) 719-7428 Checkout our TV Podcasts – https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song – Die Hard by Guyz Nite – https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

“The Natural” belongs in any debate over the best sports movie ever. It has Robert Redford in his prime, a stunning Kim Basinger, huffy Wilford Brimley, sly Robert Duvall, powerful Glenn Close, and even a young Michael Madsen. They’re all delivering top-notch performances on a picture-perfect backdrop that feels really real for an ‘80s movie. Shat The Movies listener Vince commissioned this baseball classic just as hosts Dick Ebert and Drew Zakmin are gearing up for Opening Day. It’s full of iconic scenes that bring us all back to our playing days, when we imagined each of us could swing his own Wonderboy bat and be the greatest that ever played the game. Everything ages, and “The Natural” aged surprisingly well, but not everything was a home run. Redford is 46 and playing a 19-year-old. His character, Roy Hobbs, seems to leave a trail of death wherever he goes. And the final inning is cornier than a Nebraska farm. In this episode, you’ll also hear our list of the worst sports-movie actors of all time, find out how a young Big D would get pumped up for high school games, and learn why your mom got a care package from Derek Jeter. "Toy Story" won the Best of Disney category, and it's easy to see why this Pixar powerhouse spawned an entire franchise. The characters are unforgettable, the attention to detail is unrivaled, and the voice talent is unbeatable.  This episode is all about Dick Ebert. One second he's perving out over The Little Mermaid, the next he's impersonating Randy Newman. Big D even brought a special guest along for this '90s movie review: Drew Zakmin, of the One Headlight podcast.  Gene Lyons joins them to discuss their favorite childhood toys, the dark side of Woody the Cowboy, Ram Man, Fisto, and parallels between "Toy Story" and its less-popular contemporary "The Christmas Story." How much Corey is too much Corey? Between Corey Haim's mouth breathing and Corey Feldman's avalanche of bombing jokes, we'd say "License to Drive" answers that question emphatically.  The Shat Crew expected corny '80s jokes, cheese car stunts, and loads of questionable fashion. But we had no idea "License to Drive" would lead us to tales of severed feet, an Nabokovian hot Heather Graham, and an alternate universe where Gene Lyons laughs at on-screen burps, Roger Roeper mistakenly believe The Fresh Prince's Uncle Phil died of AIDS, and Dick Ebert wishes death upon young and old alike. When "Shat The Movies" listener Lucas discovered we wouldn't be doing a Best of Jewish Mob Movies category, he took matters into his own hands. Equipped with $300 and a brilliantly composed email, Lucas convinced Big D we needed to cover the 1998 sleeper "Safe Men." We were amazed to discover one of the strangest films we've witnessed. The cast is good: Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, Paul Giamatti, Mark Ruffalo, Harvey Fierstein, Peter Dinklage. The script is reasonable. But there's just something odd about this movie that created a rollercoaster of a conversation among Dick Ebert, Roger Roeper, and Kerri Gross. Learn what each of your Shat The Movies hosts like to do while drunk at 2 a.m., what it's like to hang at the VFW hall while elderly women wait to devour your Marine father's wedding potluck, and how Big D talked Roger out of pursuing a career as a professional event DJ. Big D thought we should do a Best of Rick Ducommun, and you're probably wondering who that is. You're not alone. Ducommun was in "Spaceballs," "The Last Boy Scout," "Die Hard," "Groundhog Day," and dozens of other '80s and '90s classics. You might say he's Mr. Shat The Movies, and Big D is a big fan.  So it's only fitting that Dick Ebert pop his Shat The Movies hosting cherry by guiding us through the 1989 classic "The Burbs," best known for another actor you might have heard of: Tom Hanks. Kerri Gross and The King Bee join Big D in discussing nipple hunting on cable TV, "The Burbs" connection to "The Silence of The Lambs," what the hell Corey Feldman is doing in this movie, Tom Hanks' disagreeable side, and how to be an awful neighbor. "Gleaming The Cube" brought skateboard culture to the big screen with one of the weirdest plots we've seen to date: A skater Christian Slater investigates the accidental murder of his adopted Vietnamese brother while Tony Hawk delivers pizza. The villains are stereotypical. The action scenes defy the laws of physics. The blood looks more like Kool-Aid, and the romance is just plain creepy. But there's something about "Gleaming The Cube" that's made it a cult classic despite what Big D calls a conspiracy to keep it hidden from the world. Kerri Gross regrets voting for this movie dozens of times from different computers. Roger Roeper defends it as an accurate depiction of skateboarders' lifestyle, and Dick Ebert wishes the Shat Score could go even higher to express what a turd it was. “Why can’t the Westworld hosts kill humans? What’s the deal with milk and flies? Is that Soundgarden in the background? Is Dr. Ford a robot? What the hell is going on in the Westworld series debut? You’ve got Westworld questions, and we’ve got Westworld answers. Hosts Roger Roper and Dick Ebert saddle up with their new sidekick, Gene Lyons, to explore the vast Westworld frontiers in search of justice and the ultimate truth behind Delos Destinations’ corporate motives. Westworld! Where the saloon girls are all 10’s and the rye whiskey is best served warm. For $40,000 a day, we can all immerse ourselves in the lawlessness of the Old West. Westworld asks, how each of us would indulge our otherwise unspeakable appetites for senseless violence and transgressive sex, without moral scruple or legal consequence. The series is remarkably stark in its depiction of the cruelty underlying these appetites. All but vanished are the “shoot-out with a bandito” type scenarios of the campy 1973 movie. Instead, tourist’s regales in watching their artificial victims wriggle in the throes of death, only to want a souvenir photograph to take home. “Now, that’s what I call a vacation!” Leave Us A Review Subscribe: Apple | Android | RSS | Website Join Discussion: Email | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube Podcatchers:  Soundcloud | Feedburner | Googleplay | Stitcher | Tunein | Spreaker | Podbay | Pocketcasts Theme Song: The Ecstasy Of Gold (Hip Hop Instrumental Version) by Dj 2 Bad Tags: Westworld, Westworld TV Series, Westworld Theories, Westworld Spoilers, Westworld Series, Westworld Review, Westworld Recap, Westworld Questions, Westworld podcast, Westworld 2016, TV Series, TV Podcast, Shat The Movies, Shat On TV, Science fiction, Michael Crichton, HBO Westworld, HBO Series, HBO Podcast, Game of Thrones
