I am very excited to bring to you the first of a new music mini-series all about the rise of music and art in Germany/Austria and its extreme cultural implications which may or may not be true. This may be some of most dense work in a while so please get comfy. As I learned it, the rise of German Romanticism led to its ultimate demise at the beginning of the 20th century. I'm going to lay the groundwork for a rebuttal or two against that and so much more. A review of the most important events in Fintech from the perspective of our guests for the 8th year in a row right now. The most important development in the fintech world was for most guests the FTX collapse. Support the channel with a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/raph Podcast transcript: - Hi, who are you? "I am Raphael", is a name that my parents chose a bit before I was born. I am french. What does that mean? It means that I was born in France. In fact, I was born in Nice, which is in the southeast of France. It is only a few kilometers from Italy. Had I been born a few kilometers further east, I would have been Italian. A bit north, I would have been swiss, and that would be a completely different story, haha. But I am french, not Italian, no matter how close to Italy I was born. That means that I grew up speaking French and that my thoughts and dreams are in french. French is a funny language. Very complex in its form and construction. It is a complicated way to think. When I think in English, the content of my thoughts changes. It is not just the form, it is the substance too. Different nuances of the same word create an opposite expression. So I am french. In school, I learned the history of France. What I am interested in, is to know why am not italian. It's right next door! What a silly question, it is because I am born in france, not in Italy. The thing is, many people in my home town are born in Italy. Our food is mostly the same as in Italy. We have pizza, ravioli, gnocchi. Our tomatoes have the same color and the same taste! So the tomatoes are the same here and there, but I am not the same as the person that sells me cheese on the market of Ventimiglia. This is because we were born on different sides of the border. You see, France is France because a thousand-ish years ago, we tried to kill as many people as possible, led by a fierce person driven by greed and an unsatisfiable thirst for power. So we tried to conquer more. Then came another guy, and we tried the same. Then another, and the same. We killed, we pillaged, we raped. For what? To try to satisfy man's vice. Fast forward a couple of centuries later, and we started being a bit more diplomatic. With ups and downs of course, even today we kill each other for no reason other than being lost in the illusions of our imagination. Because of this god, or that god. Because of this greedy bastard, or that one. But in general, in western Europe the day I was born in 1987, we did less killing here. We started building borders, with some fancy rules on how to cross them, with a paper that is stamped by some imaginary construct. As of today, with the European Union being what it is, we don't even have the borders we used to. It is only a fictitious line. And so, between Menton and Ventimiglia, you could put one foot on each country. Isn't that fun? The line is more fictitious than it ever was, and it was always just a thought that spread from one person to another. It was never real. I am born on this piece of rock, and he is born on that other piece of rock. That is what defines us. The line in the middle, that doesnt exist and was put in place to mitigate more killing and satisfy the most powerful's greedy natures. The funny thing is that I am the first French person in my lineage or at least the first person born in France. My mother was born in Algeria, which is in north Africa. when she was born, it belonged to France, and at school, children were taught that they were all French and that Asterix was their ancestor. Then it changed, and the children, from one day to another had a new ancestor. My father's side originates from Austria and fled the nazis during the war, landing in England. My grandfather never spoke English very well, but speaking German, his mother tongue was forbidden. When your government kills your entire family in front of you, you start to deny where you're from. That is normal. But again, from one day to another, they were identifying themselves as proud Austrians. A few years prior, they would have fought on the German side of the first world war. That means, that the same person in those days, could have potentially killed and died for Germany/Austria, and a few years later, after that country tried to exterminate his whole race, would fight and kill for the very country they fought against, against the country they were fighting for. I know that this is a simplistic view that doesn't reflect fully all the complexities of that subject. But if a shift in identity is so easily done, then we identify the wrong data sets. Have you ever had that friend who was a fervent football supporter of a team, but every time they lost they were a fervent supporter of another team? 2006 - "who are you?" "I am an Arsenal fan". 2018 "who are you?" "I am a huge man city supporter." They change their emblem, and they change their outfits from red to light blue. Again, I am being overly simplistic about a complex subject, and I am being a little bit cynical and facetious. This is because, once we wake up to the fact that we are identifying ourselves to events and circumstances that are only real in our own heads, in our thoughts, it becomes quite funny. How can I be so shallow is the first question that pops up in my student's heads when they start seeing a glimpse of light. It doesn't matter. But now, it is time to go deeper and to realize who we really are. We are more than a set of circumstances, that often originated from some angry man's greed and thirst for power. And so I continue asking the question. Who are you?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
On the Shabbat immediately following Purim, we take a second Torah scroll from the ark and read from it the section known as "Parashat Para." Parashat Para, which tells of the laws of the Para Aduma (the red heifer, whose ashes were used to sprinkle on those who had become ritually impure), is the opening section of Parashat Chukat, until the words, "Ve'ha'nefesh Ha'noga'at Titma Ad Ha'arev" (Bamidbar 19:1-22).Tosefot in Masechet Berachot (13) write that the annual reading of Parashat Para constitutes a Torah obligation; this is mentioned by other Rishonim (Medieval Talmudists), as well, including the Rashba (Spain, 1235-1310), the Ritva (Spain, 1250-1330) and Terumat Ha'deshen (Rabbi Yisrael Isserlin, Germany-Austria, 1390-1460). The Shulchan Aruch indeed records this position.Later writers have raised the question of where the Torah introduces such an obligation. If, indeed, this reading is required according to Torah law, this requirement must have a clear Biblical source. The work "Yalkut Ha'gershuni" suggests that this reading is obligated by force of the Torah's admonition to recall the unfortunate incident of the sin of the golden calf (Devarim 9:7). As this incident marks a very sad moment in our nation's history, we prefer not to read the actual narrative of the golden calf, and we instead read about the Para Aduma, which serves to atone for the sin of the golden calf. Indeed, the Sages describe the cow used for this ritual as the mother that comes to clean the mess made by her daughter, the calf. Thus, the reading of the Para Aduma section fulfills the Torah obligation to recall the incident of the golden calf.Others, however, have questioned this explanation. If this is the obligation we seek to fulfill, we can just as easily do so on the Shabbat when we read Parashat Ki Tisa, which contains the narrative of the golden calf. On this Shabbat we could instruct the congregation to have in mind while listening to this reading to fulfill the Torah obligation of remembering the incident of the golden calf. Rather than instituting a special reading, we could fulfill this requirement through the standard, scheduled reading of Parashat Ki Tisa. Furthermore, when all is said and done, the Sages speak of the Para Aduma ritual as a Chok – a Mitzva whose underlying rationale eludes human comprehension. It is therefore difficult to claim that this Mitzva serves solely as atonement for the sin of the golden calf. The Aruch Ha'shulchan (Rabbi Yechiel Epstein of Nevardok, Bielorussia 1829-1888) suggests a different Biblical source of the obligation to read Parashat Para. The Torah instructs in this section, "Ve'hayeta Lachem Le'chukat Olam" – that this law "shall be for you an eternal statute." The Torah here requires that we observe this law "eternally," despite the fact that this Mitzva of purifying oneself with the ashes of Para Aduma applies only when the Temple stands. The Aruch Ha'shulchan therefore suggests that the Torah here refers to an obligation to verbally recall this process by reading the relevant section in the Torah, even when practically the ritual cannot be performed. In any event, other scholars claimed that the reading of Parashat Para originates from Chazal (the Sages), and is not required by Torah law. Some even claim that Tosefot did not, in fact, cast this requirement as a Torah obligation. This theory contends that Tosefot had written the abbreviation "Peh-Peh," referring to "Parashat Purim," the section read on Purim telling of the battle with Amalek, with which one can fulfill the Torah obligation to recall Amalek's hostility. Later editors mistakenly understood the abbreviation as referring to "Parashat Para," and therefore reached the erroneous conclusion that Tosefot viewed this reading as a Torah obligation. However, this theory is difficult to accept in light of the fact that numerous other Rishonim, as mentioned above, side with Tosefot on this matter. It is hard to imagine that they were all misled by a printing error. Are women included in the obligation of Parashat Para?Presumably, this would depend on the two sources mentioned above. According to the "Yalkut Ha'gershuni," as we have seen, we read Parashat Para to recall the incident of the golden calf. If so, then women, who did not take part in the worship of the golden calf, should be excluded from this obligation. According to the Aruch Ha'shulchan, however, who explained that this reading fulfills the obligation of eternally remembering the Para Aduma purification ritual, it should apply equally to women, who are likewise required to undergo purification through the process of the Para Aduma. Therefore, women should endeavor to come to the synagogue to hear the reading of Parashat Para. If this presents a problem given their domestic responsibilities, they may remain at home.It should also be noted that the highest-quality Torah scroll available should be used for this reading, since according to many it constitutes a Torah obligation.Summary: There is a difference of opinion as to whether the reading of Parashat Para on the Shabbat following Purim constitutes a Torah obligation, or was ordained by the Rabbis. Pennsylvania-born Bryan Ruby is a baseball player and country music songwriter who has traveled the world playing baseball while continuing with his career in music. Bryan's passion for country music was behind his decision to pass up a D1 baseball scholarship in order to study and play closer to Nashville, the mecca of country music. Bryan eventually wrapped up his college career at a D3 school in upstate New York in 2019 before taking his career overseas. In one of his final college games, Bryan played all 9 positions in a single game and it is this versatility combined with a little networking savviness that led to playing baseball in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Chile and Peru within his first year overseas. In this interview, Bryan talks about his European jet-setting baseball experience and springboarding that adventure to join a crew of international baseball players on a South American baseball journey. Byran also provides some great tips on how he utilized his first overseas experience to draw in multiple offers and further his off-the-field career.

Phil, Jake and Jason are joined by returning champion singer-songwriter Dave Hause to rank the questionable experiment Chris Gaines on the List of Every Damn Thing. Plus we re-rank sex!Follow Dave on Instagram (@davehause), Twitter (@hausedave) and Facebook (DaveHauseMusic). You can find his songs on Spotify & Apple Music. If you're in Europe, here's the info on Dave's upcoming Germany / Austria shows. Most dates are sold out, so get on it for the ones that aren't! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We make some references to ASMR, which stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (sometimes Auto Sensory Meridian Response). It's not always, or maybe not even usually, a sex thing. Kink-shaming is something Phil's always trying not to do. “Asparagus Tarzan”(Spargeltarzan) is a German slang term of endearment / insult equivalent to “stringbean” or “beanpole” in English. Here's some etymology. The name comes from a description of famous skinny German footballer, Hans Bongartz. “Friends in Low Places” was written by Dewayne Blackwell and Earl Bud Lee. As expected, there's nothing on the internet saying that either of them didn't spend all their songwriting proceeds on taking their family to the movies. We discuss a few male celebrities with “can I speak to the manager” haircuts, including The Goo-Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik, Country singer Keith Urban and Criss Angel. We go into some detail about the CD booklet pics from the album Garth Brooks in… The Life of Chris Gaines, including the one featuring his creamy hammies. The similarity between Gaines and Zoolander is uncanny but we think they're both going for the same thing. It's like how calculus was invented by Newton and Leibniz at the same time. We talk about how the rapper Spice 1 sometimes switches mid-song into a dancehall influenced persona named Reggaengsta. A good example is from Clip & the Trigga. Luke the Drifter was an alter-ego that Hank Williams used for more explicitly religious material. Here's a little poem/sermon that's maybe a little ahead of its time, "Too Many Parties and Too Many Pals". Hank Williams, Jr. was apparently given the nickname Bocephus by his father, as he rocked in the cradle. We talk a bit about Eminem's alter-ego Slim Shady. Here's a link to Feminem, who may or may not be related. Here's Chris Tucker in a recent standup special talking about Blade himself. We mention George Clooney, whose friends (aka Jason) know him as the “Cloontang”. Here's the Childish Gambino cover of Chris Gaines' “Lost in You”. We talk about the Greg Album / Cher project Allman & Woman. Greg Allman has yet to be ranked on the List of Everything but his ex-wife Cher can currently be found at #7. The Jay-Z / R. Kelly album is called Best of Both Worlds. In this episode we talk about pricing and more generically about market testing. I know, I know, marketing is probably not every coders favorite subject. I bring it up as I’ve noticed many apps in the marketplace that are underpriced. Apps that are cool, differentiated or do something of great value to the consumer can clearly support higher price points. No user is ever going to ask you to charge them more for your app so the task of picking the right price point falls on you. The easiest way to do that is to do market testing aka A/B testing (or split testing, bucket testing etc). In this episode I refer specifically to price testing for paid apps but this technique could easily be used to test for other things that might increase revenue in paid apps or downloads in free apps. All sorts of things like categories, descriptions, keywords, or artwork can be affect the performance of your app and so could be optimized. As I mentioned above, from what I’ve seen in the marketplace many developers will underprice their apps. They seem to be optimizing for number of downloads. That is indeed what you want for free or ad-supported apps but for paid apps you probably want to optimize for revenue and that formula is a simple one everyone knows: revenue = paid downloads x price. If you optimize for downloads then likely you are in a race to the bottom; i.e. how fast you can get to the $0.99 price point.Since you have 2 variables to optimize and only one which you have any control over, the easiest way to optimize for revenue is to test different price points and watch the number of paid downloads at each point. Obviously if you want to maximize revenue then you want to get the highest price possible for your app. To do that start at a high price. Over time you may need to drop the price (e.g. for competitive reasons or for sales or promotional events). So the obvious question is: how do I do market testing on the Windows Phone marketplace? Since you cannot vary pricing by market in the marketplace the way I recommend is to submit the same app with the same metadata twice. You would do that to two different markets that have very similar buying behavior. Examples of markets that have similar buying behavior are US/Canada, France/Belgium, Germany/Austria, or Australia/New Zealand. By doing this you can do your A/B testing; i.e. by maintaining all things equal except for pricing then you can figure out what price the market will bear for your app. Let me know what you think about this episode of Top Ranked. If you have questions about any of the videos, about problems or issues you’re hitting or if you have topics that you think would be of interest to other devs on the Windows Phone platform then drop me a note. I’d be particularly interested in hearing about some of the best practices you’ve adopted that you think have raised your quality or your ratings/ranking in the Marketplace.
