Ryan Egusquiza from Bend, Oregon's Giant Loop is our guest this week and we talk hard cases (not head cases) vs. soft bags and the art of leaving LA.
Buckle up, y'all - this is a long one! The boys have been out of commission with the very busy Summer-time schedules that have back-to-back events for the motorcycle industry folks. In today's Pulp Fiction-esque timeline, Q revels in the excitement of Road America and Brainerd. Shahin remembers the dusty flavor and hilarity of Giant Loop 2024 and his dreams and hopes of the Touratech Rally West 2024. Unrally experience with the badass folks at Mosko Moto, anyone?? Q plays in the sand with the Flying 15 Long Beach Rally and the boys are once again reminded that they're now adults with real adult health issues. Take care of those bods, y'all Brapistanis. Few places on the planet resonate with the adventurer like the African continent, from the vibrant cultures to the ancient civilizations, megafauna, and some of the most remote and inspiring landscapes on earth. At Overland Journal, we have been fortunate to circumnavigate the planet three times and cross all seven continents. Still, we had one journey that has continually called to us- crossing the long axis of the African continent.Today marks day zero of the journey, as our Ineos Grenadier arrives in Durban, and we begin lightly modifying the vehicle to meet our needs as travelers. We selected the Grenadier because of its "Built on Purpose" design, robust construction, off-highway capabilities, and wagon configuration (Editor's Note: We are not being paid to use the Grenadier). As we often share, pinnacle overland vehicles like the Grenadier require few changes for overlanding, and the Grenadier is no exception. We have no modifications planned for the vehicle, but we will add some storage and systems that help support the adventure. Taking Delivery of the GrenadierWe took delivery of the Grenadier in London and spent a week exploring the countryside and testing the vehicle at the Millbrook proving grounds in Bedfordshire. In London, I worked with the Ineos team on securing RORO shipping, spares, support equipment, and the Carnet de Passage for importation. Our preparations have begun in Johannesburg, working with longtime friends and partners to help source the needed kit and discussing the route plans with experienced Trans-Africa overlanders. After a few weeks in Joburg, we will conduct a test run through Lesotho and the surrounding bushveld before heading to Cape Town and our launching-off point.Planned Grenadier Fieldmaster Modifications and Support Equipment: Secure vehicle storage, including a drawer system Inside sleeping platform that retains the rear seats Garmin GPS navigation and satellite communication Recovery gear, tools, and spares First aid and emergency supplies Melvill and Moon canvas seat covers and bed rolls Redarc battery management with auxiliary lithium battery Additional 80 liters of auxiliary fuel in Giant Loop bladders and NATO cans That is it. . . Our Trans-Africa Overland Route PlanThe original plan was to drive along the classic eastern track from Cape Town to Cairo. With Sudan's closed border, we are looking at all possibilities, including driving north to Kenya and crossing through Rwanda to the DRC and up the west coast. Adjustments are all part of the adventure, and I am being in the moment and taking the journey country by country. To help document the journey, I will have Joe Fleming along for most (if not all) of the trip. Joe is an inspiring visual storyteller, an experienced traveler, and a good friend. Others are planning to join for short sections too, and we will share our experiences on the pages of Overland Journal, in articles for expeditionportal.com, on our YouTube channel, and on The Overland Journal Podcast. I am so grateful for the support of my family and the Overland International team in undertaking this trip, along with the generous help from Aether Apparel, Front Runner, Garmin, Ineos Automotive, Redarc, and others. We look forward to meeting some of you along the Overland Journal trans-Africa continental crossing journey and celebrating what will become a historic first (more on that soon). This week on our motorcycle podcast we head up to Portland, OR for the 10th anniversary of the One Motorcycle Show. They know how to put on a great event, with motorcycles, mini bike races, vendors, bands, art, food and beer trucks all in an industrial building that use to be a pickle factory. We have such a good time running into old friends and making new friends there. And we can always count on running into other Misfits there too. We got a lot of great interviews with builders like Tim from Muenstermann Builds and J. Shia of Madhouse Motors. We talked to Harlold from Giant Loop and Kevin from Velomacchi, who both make rugged bags for world travel. Then we hear from Dan at Cake, a new electric motorcycle company, and Brandon who's doing amazing things with scooters at the Scooter Swap Shop. We discover a whole new spin on buying accessories with the Biker Gear Club, and talk to Dave who's trying to make the world a better place with his Highway to Health charity. Danger Dan is back to give us his race report from the best race of the night at the flat track races. And of course we throw in our stories and highlights from the weekend. Thanks again to Thor and Tori for putting on such a great event and Amanda at Icon for making our dreams come true. Episode 167: So this episode is a bit hacked together. As I explain in the beginning, we originally had a guest on to talk about some stuff but afterwards, they decided they didn't want that to run. I've made an effort to try and piece together as complete a show as possible without the interview and our post-talk. Fortunately, we got Jen back on the show to cohost with us so we have a lot of other stuff to chat about! Mary McGee - Legendary Motorcycle Racer Mary McGee is truly an inspirational rider, who has paved the way for many women competitors and riders alike. She started out racing cars in the 1950’s and then got in to motorcycle road racing, enduro, motocross and finally vintage racing in the 2000’s. She started racing long before it was acceptable for women, racing against men simply because there weren’t any women’s classes in racing. And when Mary received the FIM Woman Legend in 2012, she finally decided to get her street riding license, and signed up for a basic motorcycle riding class! Mary turns 80 years old this year, and when you hear her voice in this interview, she just doesn’t sound like your average octogenarian. She’s witty, spry and just sounds way younger than her years. It must be motorcycling that keeps her young, and if that’s the case, then we should all be doing it. Bravo Mary! You are one of our greatest mentors! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mary.mcgee.3745?ref=br_rs Brad Barker - Operation Ecuador Brad is the producer of The Ride of My Life videos and website, with the goal of discovering the good stuff, exploring and riding to different places in the world, and to impact lives in a positive way. In April 2016, the people of Ecuador were struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and are still in desperate need of aid. Brad went down to Ecuador and helped a local motorcycle club distribute some supplies to the victims. Brad Barker is planning Operation Ecuador, and is gathering donations of money and supplies to deliver to Ecuador. In partnership with RawHyde, the Coalition of Hope Foundation and the local Ecuador motorcycle club, the Brosters, he is taking a relief shipment down when the containers are full. They are seeking financial and good donations, as well as asking for help to unload and distribute goods. If you would like to help in any of these ways, check out Brad’s website. We can find all kinds of reasons and excuses to keep putting off a short road trip, let alone a trip to other countries. As we all know, work can be the stopper in trip planning. We have to make money to support our riding addictions after all! And what if you’re just not comfortable enough to ride on your own, would a group tour be just the thing for you? Or if you know nothing about bike repairs? Even the biggest of problems has a solution, sometimes you have to jump through some hoops, make mistakes or just figure it out. While some obstacles can be intimidating or difficult, once you overcome them you may be surprised what you discover. In this episode we talk with Kinga Tanajewska and Brian Clarke about their adventure motorcycle trips and what they had to do to get there. Kinga Tanajewska - Combining Work & Adventure in Australia Kinga Tanajewska knew an interest of motorcycles at a young age, and rode street bikes since her teens when her parents bought her a motorcycle for graduation. She moved from Poland to Australia, and there developed a passion for adventure motorcycling led by her desire to see as much of Australia’s outback as she could. She had a dream to ride around Australia, but wanted to keep her job. She also had no repair skills in case she had a flat or other break down. By splitting her trip in to two parts, and incorporating a couple of job transfers, she was able to mesh work and riding and ride solo around Australia. She experienced beautiful scenery, wildlife, and remote camping. For Kinga, changing a tire turned out not to be a concern after all, and now she is grabs any opportunity to ride. We call that rider mania! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/onherbike Website: onherbike.com Youtube Channel: youtube.com/onherbike Brian Clarke - People & Places Make the Adventure Brian Clarke wasn’t happy being a mechanic, he’d had some failed relationships and was in desperate need for a change in his life. He’d always loved motorcycles but the expense kept him from riding, until he bought an old 600 Bandit and then he was hooked. Not knowing much about long distance adventure travel, he decided to book a Pan America motorcycle tour. Although his bike did break down just before the near three month trip was over, and the tour had proved challenging in more ways than one, Brian now realized that he was able to travel on his own. He didn’t need to rely on anyone else to guide him. He returned to the UK, leaving his motorcycle in Calgary, Canada. After a year, he flew back, got his bike and his two wheeled travel life began. Brian eyes were opened to the beauty of the land and people in the places he visited. He met the love of his life, motorcyclist Michelle Lamphere, and instead of an undesirable job, he passionately pursues riding and submits articles to various moto publications. Life is good! In October 2014, Liz and her partner Con Feyen set out travel from Australia to London with a 12 month window planned for their trip. They had sold, stored or donated all their belongings, except for what they needed for the trip, and while it may seem scary to some people, they were excited about the freedom of being homeless and jobless and without “stuff”. Liz felt no trepidations about not being a very experienced motorcycle rider, and happily set out for London. Well, after 16 months of riding, they arrived in Iran. Seems their schedule had gone on the wayside and London was not to be attained on this trip. And while at times the trip may have been harder than what Liz thought it would be, she feels she is better off for having done it. She says that “it is never too late to start something new, learn something new and to put yourself in vulnerable situations”. And even now, Liz and Con are planning their next adventure as she hones her skills back in Australia. After living in Australia for 12 years, Will & Kate were feeling homesick for the UK and decided it was time to go home. They could have just booked a flight and within the day been back home. But when opportunity knocks, why not open the door? Many people find it hard in their busy lives to take the time to go on an adventure. It seems to be a common thread where we all long for it, but don't seem able to pull it together. Will and Kate had already done some travelling, but not on their motorcycles, especially as Kate was a new rider and hadn't done any long rides as yet. This was their chance to turn a long move in to an amazing trip spanning across 20 countries and about 21,000 km. In two months, they planned their trip and then left Wollongong for Woolwich. They experienced many different cultures, and had varying receptions. They faced food and accommodation challenges. And although well planned, they still had stressful times, and dramatic moments. But, through and through, it was an escapade which they thoroughly enjoyed... and much more fun than a long plane ride. Rally Raid’s Honda CB500X Adventure Bike On this episode we talk about the Rally Raid conversion kit that transforms what is basically a street bike, the Honda CB500X, into what may the ultimate mid-weight adventure bike. The end result seems to impress everyone that comes across it and a quick look at some of the videos on this page have to impress you. With the heart of the beast being an ultra reliable Honda twin cylinder 471cc fuel injected power plant you are melding the Honda reliability with some incredibly well designed suspension pieces manufactured by Rally Raid and Tractive Suspension. Hidden nuggets include a two piston fork that has both high speed and low speed dampening, which is unheard of elsewhere. “I can confirm that there is no other twin cylinder adventure bike on the market that even comes close to the all-round ability and confidence inspiring handling both on- and off-road that this bike now delivers with the Rally Raid Products upgrades,” says Morgan. “The best analogy I can think of is it rides like an open class rally bike, but with a lower seat and bullet-proof reliability. You will not be disappointed.”’ - Giant Loop press release Guests: John Mitchinson: Owner & machinist/engineer, Rally Raid Products http://www.rally-raidproducts.co.uk http://www.cb500xadventure.com Jenny Morgan: British rally racer rode Giant Loop’s bike on the TransAm 500 Proof of Concept tour in 2015, a 50 day trip, covering more than 12,000 miles from the west to east coast and back again on the Trans America Trail Website: www.jennydakar.com Jenny ADV Rider Forum: http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/trans-am-500-the-seven-year-itch.1061450/ Trans America Trail: http://www.transamtrail.com Harold Olaf Cecil: Owner & Co-Founder at Giant Loop Moto, the distributor in the US for the Rally Raid Kit for the Honda CB500X. www.giantloopmoto.com Brought to You By: Max BMW Motorcycles Shop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Issa & Nita Breibish’s Moto Journey: Getting From A to D As so often happens in life, we get caught up in what society expects us to do. Get a good education, get a good job, buy a house, have the right furniture, clothes, gadgets… and so on. We are expected to live our life in the “normal” way. In the western culture, if you don’t have the big house and fancy cars, and everything that goes along with it, including debt and stress, well… you just aren’t living. We think we need or want those things, that they will make us happy. But, as many studies have shown, life experience makes you happier than acquiring material things. Even those experiences which may be uncomfortable to us in the moment, make us feel more fulfilled. We may turn them in to funny stories or see them as a valuable learning experience. And stories, more than material things, are what connect us to other people. Because who doesn’t love a good story?Issa and Nita Breibish felt that something was missing in their life, and the more they thought about it the more they felt they needed to do something about it. They decided to sell everything and turn their material things in to experiences. After some planning, they left on a trip which would become an education in life for them. They haven’t rushed from place to place, they have taken the time to spend with the people and cultures they came across. Issa and Nita feel that time spent in one place has more value than tallying up the countries they have visited or how many miles they have travelled. And having had the time of their life, they are ready to hit the road again as soon as they can and to, as Nita says, not worry about getting from A to Z in an allotted time, but just meander from A to D.Highlights:- Trip preparation - gear or mind?- Material things = experience- Essential gear - how much is too much?- How to get more out of your tripTwitter: gomotogeoFacebook: www.facebook.com/welovemotogeo/Website: www.welovemotogeo.comYoutube Channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqryVUBbfVJl3kbAIHW9PIQSFU study: Contrary to expectations, life experiences better use of money than material items.http://news.sfsu.edu/contrary-expectations-life-experiences-better-use-money-material-itemsBrought to You By:Max BMW MotorcyclesShop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Luis Castilla started riding a motorcycle as therapy to help him deal with the death of his parents. It was something he became passionate about and in 2014, Luis and a friend rode from Mexico City to the Arctic Circle and back on BMW motorcycles. Then in 2015, Luis Castilla entered the Discover More competition with Harley-Davidson. Imagine applying for a job where you get to ride a brand new motorcycle around Europe for three months, and you get paid for it! Not only that but you get to keep the motorcycle at the end of the trip. When Luis entered the contest, he had to submit written and video details to convince the Harley-Davidson team why he should be chosen. And well, with a 1 in 10,000 chance of winning, he must have impressed them. In this episode, Luis Castilla tells us how riding a motorcycle and his European summer job changed his life. Jeffrey Polnaja - First Indonesian Motorcyclist to Ride the WorldBefore Jeffrey started his around the world trip back in 2006, he heard the word “impossible” over and over again. Jeffrey comes from a country where solo world travel isn’t readily embraced by their culture, and travel is more often done in groups. The Indonesian Rupiah currency is very low in value compared to the US dollar. And people told him with the time needed, the distance he would cover, cultural differences and the natural challenges, that it was a far fetched idea and that it was an unattainable dream. A solo motorcycle trip around the world seemed absurd to many people in Indonesia, but Jeffrey had other plans. And the more people told him it was futile, the more determined he became. He slowly gained support through some friends and was sponsored by an adventure gear company for some camping and riding gear. But, after five years of planning and trying to get the financial support he needed to make his journey, he made the decision to sell his company. Then in 2006, with just a basic knowledge of English, and limited funds, he set off on his “Ride For Peace” journey on his GS Adventure.Jeffrey’s trip was inspired by his son enquiring about why there was so much unjust conflict in the world after 9/11. He wanted to experience the world and different cultures, and to discover for himself the good and the desire for peace that most people have. He found that you don’t need to have any special skills to take on such an adventure, that any ordinary person can do it. You just need an open mind. After 7 years of riding, Jeffrey is back in Indonesia to enlighten people as to what he has found on the road, but he isn’t finished his ride yet, and plans to head out again soon.** Jeffrey Polnaja is a Jupiter’s Traveller. Most people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. And we are quite used to our gas powered engine, with lots of torque, tanks that hold enough fuel to travel long distances and easy refuelling stations. Hey, it’s a tradition and who doesn’t love to hear the power in their engine? In the last few years though, motorcycle manufacturers have been introducing electric motorcycles. And while it is still a very new thing to us diehard bikers, electric motorcycles are starting to gain a toehold in this competitive industry. Till recently, it’s been the smaller manufacturers that have been leading this possible upcoming trend of quiet moto transport, but the major manufacturers are starting to come on board. When comparing performance of gas power to electric powered motorcycle, a few key points stand out. While traditional gas powered motorcycles are averaging 200 miles on a tank, electric powered motorcycles are only reaching just about half of that amount. But they require almost no maintenance and there are very few moving parts. You can refuel your gas powered motorcycle at almost every corner in any city and almost every town around the world, but it may be more difficult to find a place to recharge an electric bike. And when you do you may need to dedicate some time to this if using a regular 110 V outlet, as it may take up to 10 hours or more. But, dollar for dollar, with fuel costs being so high in some countries, the electric motorcycle could save you $100’s of dollars a year.Electric Motos - Neck Braces - ARR Show Announcement: ARR RAWElectric Moto - Victory Motorcycles - Josh KattMost people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. If you were able to reduce some of that risk by wearing a neck brace would you take advantage of that?My main question going into testing of the Leatt STX Road neck brace was: Is the added protection this offers worth the additional bulk and effort of having take it on and off every time I ride? The STX Road neck brace is Leatt’s “street” specific entry in their lineup. It shares the same technology and many of the same features as one of Leatt’s racetrack or off road specific braces but has a lower profile and some design differences that make it more adept for street/adventure riding. These differences include a gap in the front of the brace for zipper access, rear scapula wings designed to fit around a back protector and most importantly it is optimized to fit over your riding gear. The general concept of the Leatt neck brace is to prevent extreme forward, backward or sideways extension of the neck in the event of an accident or impact. It also helps prevent compression of the spine by transferring impact force from the helmet to the brace. According to Leatt the use of one of their neck braces reduces the force of hyper extension (over-bending of the head in rearward direction) by 46%, posterior hyper-translation (extreme movement of the head and helmet to the rear) by 17%, hyper- flexion (over bending of the head in forward direction) by 21%, lateral hyper-flexion (over-bending of the head to one side) by 20% and coupled axial loading (axial force on the spine) by 17%. Those are real numbers that make a very strong argument for wearing one of their braces. Additionally the STX is CE tested and certified as personal protective equipment. After using the brace for a short period of time it became easy to forget that I was even wearing it. With it’s lightweight build and unobtrusive fit it seems to meld into your riding gear. Also after donning and doffing the STX multiple times with and without gloves in different circumstances it became second nature. The STX has a simple clamshell design that can hinge or be opened on either side with bright red clasps to help draw attention to emergency personnel in the event of an accident. Almost immediately after I started using the Leatt brace I new that the added “hassle” of this extra piece of equipment would be worth it, mostly because it wasn’t really a hassle at all. Honestly the most difficult aspect of getting used to wearing this brace was having the collar on my riding jacket fully fastened with the zipper all the way up. Head checks were another concern I had as far as the day-to-day use of this brace. I had heard from other riders that this was a real issue in older Leatt models, but I found that after a few rides it was just another thing about the STX that I didn’t notice much. My head checks have become much more pronounced because I cannot just glance down and back to either side over my shoulder like I used to but I think that is a good thing. Now when I go to do a head check I keep my chin up and look over my shoulder instinctively getting a good look at my blind spot. In my case it has helped me develop a positive habit. It also helps that the STX Road was designed for street and adventure use giving it a lower profile on the shoulder for this very reason. It may also be worth mentioning that I have a world-class short neck so if I can look over my shoulders to do head checks with this brace on then so can you!Quality and fit have a lot to do with how easily the STX became part of my riding routine. Strait out of the box I was impressed with the STX. Leatt ships every unit with detailed fitting instructions, different sizing pieces, a optional harness to keep the brace in position and all the tools necessary to make adjustments. In my case it took only a few minutes to swap out the medium spacers that come installed on the large size unit for the large spacers. After that one adjustment I haven’t looked back, the fit has been excellent. Leatt has very helpful sizing charts online to ensure you order the proper unit as well. The adjustments you make when you receive the brace are mostly just to dial in the fit for the particular gear you wear or unusual dimensions you might have. All and all I think that the Leatt STX Road neck brace is a fantastic product. The added level of protection is well worth the short adjustment period it takes to get used to wearing it. After several months of testing I feel almost naked riding without it, like I forgot my helmet or gloves. Leatt offers phenomenal quality and more experience in this field than any other manufacturer. After all they invented this style of neck brace. I have made the STX Road a permanent part of my riding gear and I can’t recommend it enough.Pros: - Phenomenal quality- High level of protection- Vasty array of sizing optionsCons:- Expensive- Takes some getting used to- Can make contact with some Bluetooth communication units depending on the helmetMSRP: $399.00 UShttp://www.leatt.com First Ride Up the DivideSpencer Hill and two newbie riders plan a trip from Mexico to Canada, off road up the Continental Divide to showcase the accessibility of adventure rider. http://www.thegeardude.com/#!First-Ride-Up-The-Divide/c20ru/564107d60cf21009be7ef127ARR RAW is a spin-off show from Adventure Rider Radio that has a different format and audio style.
