There was a time when fanny packs were a status symbol, a shag cut had nothing to do with the backseat of your car, bricks were considered aerodynamic and Nissan was a brand no Datsun owner had heard of.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inThis Open Class 1971 Datsun 1600 (510) time attack weapon is keeping the best part of those things alive, with plenty of modern upgrades. Powered by a, ahem, 'Datsun' SR20 pushing 350kW (470hp) to the wheels via E85, 25psi (1.7Bar) of boost, a BorgWarner EFR7670 and a Samsonas 6-speed sequential, this flying brick is a credit to all involved especially owner/driver John Healey of V-Sport Australia.Electronics are handled by an EMtron Kv8 ECU, MoTeC C125 dash and PDM 15. John is getting as much value as possible from the PDM which is about at its limit powering everything in the car, including the electric steering setup, something we don't commonly see used in time attack builds. The SR20 is a bit of an unknown, with John having had some head work done, but the bottom end left as it was purchased secondhand. A Bosch DBW throttle body to assist in rev-match downshifts to help avoid some of the issues that are well known to kill SR20s, and along with a 7,800rpm limit, so far so good!A universal Sydney Composites aero kit has been fitted, and as you would expect of someone from V-Sport, the brake package is on point with the Datsun 510 utilising an AP Racing pedal box and 4 pot front brack calliper, Brembo 4 pot rear and pretty much the biggest discs you can squeeze under 15" wheels.TIME STAMPS:0:00 - Datsun 510/16000:08 - V-Sport Australia0:14 - Open Class Vs Club Sprint0:35 - Why A Datsun 1600?1:00 - Engine & Gearbox1:34 - Why Not A SR20VE?1:53 - Power & Boost2:19 - Powerband - From 3,500rpm2:40 - Rocker System Issues?3:04 - Shift Cuts3:40 - Unknown Bottom End, Future Plans4:10 - Why A Dry Sump?4:44 - Electronics Package5:00 - PDM Setup5:15 - Electric Vs Hydraulic Steering5:44 - Aerodynamics Package6:27 - Universal Components6:55 - Driver Feedback7:07 - 15" Wheel Brake Package7:51 - Why Fit A Pedal Box?8:17 - Brake Data8:40 - Pedal Box Setup

Big Power Engine Parts | Design, Manufacturing & Selection.Aftermarket parts including crankshafts, pistons, rods, engine blocks and more—we all use them—but what goes into deciding what is made and what material is used to ensure you are really getting something better than OEM, and how do you know if you need such an upgrade?Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inChristian from Nitto Performance Engineering gives us some insight into these topics and more, with examples including high-volume SR20 oil pumps, RB32 Torrington bearing upgrades, and ACL custom bearings, as well as how 3D printing is used for research and development. The difference between Sine Drive and Flat Drive oil pumps is also covered, as well as some of the power levels that see engine builders move from OEM to aftermarket parts and materials, including 4340, EN40B and EN26.
1200hp is nothing to sneeze at in a full-fat RB-powered Nissan R32 GT-R 'Godzilla', but it's outright wild in an SR20-powered 4wd Nissan pulsar GTi-R running 45 psi of boost! With the naming convention so close is this car worthy of the title 'Mini Godzilla?'Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inOwner Akin Uykun gave us some insight into this build, which features a lot of great work from the PowerTune team, including their adaptor kit that allows the use of a Holinger sequential designed for the Mitsubishi EVO platform.Running a MoTeC electronics package, the SR20 has a VE head, and some of the issues with the DE/DET heads at this level are discussed along with the cylinder head sealing the dry deck Bullet Engineering billet block utilises. The difference between a dry vs wet block is also explained, along with some insight into the fuel setup.A high performance Precision 72-75 turbocharger is used to make the bulk of the 1200hp, but nitrous is also use lower in the rev range to help with spooling and up top to add the last 200hp to the peak output.Without a doubt, this is one of the fastest Pulars in Australia if not THE fastest, and if Akin manages to hit the low 8's in the future, a world record could even be possible, but he's not quite there yet.

Drew had an encounter in 1996 here in Washington up in Snohomish county. Drew describes a creature with an odd movement come out of the ditch into the road. The encounter still bothers him today. We will also be speaking to Chuck. Chuck had an encounter in 2015 at Diablo Lake. The lake is in WA state. Its a glacial-fed lake and in the summer turns a turquoise color because of fine rock particles that refract sunlight. Crater lake in Oregon has that same appearance during the summer. Chuck describes several creatures vocalizing and then it came into camp. Chuck writes "In 2015 I spent the day on a motorcycle ride over SR20 in WA State. We rode around Winthrop and Twisp, then broke up and went our separate ways. I had made plans to camp with another group of friends that night at Colonial Creek Campground at Diablo Lake. I had spent plenty of time in that area and was very comfortable there. After a day of riding with one group of friends I was excited to meet up with my other group of friends. We had a great time hanging out. Eventually we went to our own tents and went to sleep. I guess I laid down around 12:15am. It took me a bit to get comfortable and doze off. I think I fell asleep around 1am. Around 1:45am I heard a call, much like the Ohio sound from across the lake. I estimated it was four or five miles away, but the sound filled the entire valley and woke me up. I smiled, chuckled, and told myself that it was Bigfoot. This call went on for about five to ten minutes, when all of a sudden there was a return call on my side of the lake. I felt like the return call originated about three miles uphill, coming from Pinnacle Peak or Colonial Peak. I felt a sense of surprise, and was taken back by the volume and duration of the return call. This call started out low and soft then crescendo to very loud and bellowing. The sound resonated through me in a way that it instantly woke me up and I became alert. Before I could fully comprehend the return call there was another call from across the lake. This call had a shorter duration, my instincts told me that the call from across the lake was a female and the call on my side of the lake was a male. This went on for about 20 minutes, back and forth. I was in disbelief. I thought of every animal sound I knew and there was nothing like it. The duration and volume was beyond any wildlife's capabilities, not to mention any human's ability. It was fascinating to listen to and was an experience all on its own. Then things got terrifying. What happened next still causes me anxiety just thinking about it. What I will call the male, calling from my side of the lake started coming down the hill. It would stop to call back to the female on the far side of the lake. Each time it called the intensity of the volume became increasingly more intense. I typically carry protection when out in the woods. Mostly for a noise maker, my theory is that the biggest barks wins most of the time. I've had to scare off cougars using this method in the past. Regardless, I white knuckle gripped that 44 magnum and was convinced it was not enough firepower to stop whatever was coming down the mountain, much less a bigger bark. I laid there in my flimsy tent, tucked into my mummy bag, grasping my 44 as I cowered with each return call getting closer. At some point I started hearing footsteps. With each step the ground shook with a vibration that resonated through the ground. I could feel each step getting closer. What was hard to comprehend was the gait between steps. In my mind I envisioned this thing as “jogging”, not walking. I estimated the distance between each step to be 9 to 12 feet. This thing was now in the campground and still returning calls. The terror I felt was indescribably. I was literally frozen with fear. I didn't dare make a sound, I couldn't if I wanted to. My body went into an involuntary flight mode. I could not function my body, meaning I could not get out of my sleeping bag if my life depended on it. I was frozen in fear. My heart was racing, I was uncertain what was going to happen next. Not knowing was the worst part. And wouldn't you believe it, this creature ran right through my campsite, only feet from my tent. It let out a call that sent me into a state of shock. The volume, the duration, the resonating force of sound, I was defeated and terrified. As quick as it came into my campsite it left, and without hesitation it jumped into the lake. Which in my mind sounded like an elk being dropped from 20 feet into the water, there was a huge splash. If you have ever been to Diablo Lake you know it's glacier fed. That water is extremely cold. This didn't even faze it, much like a dog chasing a ball in to a cold lake, it didn't hesitate. This behavior suggested to me that this was some type of animal or “primitive”. Not many humans would jump in that water at night, and if they did you would hear them screaming in shock, it's freakin' cold! The moment it jumped into the lake and started its way across the lake I started to feel some relief. However, I lived in terror for years. I believe I suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome. After that event I listen to your shows and use them as a type of therapy. I am able to relate to others and their experiences. Knowing that I am not alone gives me a sense of relief. I have told many people about my experience. I often encounter people who are dismissive, but this doesn't faze me in the least. Once you know, you know. And for anyone who says they want a Bigfoot experience, I would caution them against it. It will change your life and most likely not in a positive way. It's been many years now and I have not tent camped since. I have hauled my travel trailer to a State Parks, but I am not comfortable remote/primitive camping anymore. I could not bring enough fire power, nor do I think I am smarter than these things in their environment. I would not have a chance if they decided to harm me. I do go out on day hikes, but I am armed and I'm constantly looking for signs. I have turned around on trails before for no other reason than my gut told me something isn't right. That being said I love the PNW and will continue to push myself back into the beautiful areas that this State and BC has to offer. However, I'm no longer naïve."

Welcome to your weekly General Aviation news update, and this week we have 3 stories for you; 737 Max 9 loses plug door in flight, NASA to release X59 this week, and the new Cirrus G7 Series. 00:00 Introduction 00:15 Boeing 737 Loses Door 02:06 NASA Releasing X59 03:06 New Cirrus G7 Series First up this week is an Alaskan Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9, which lost a plug door while climbing out of Portland, OR. The door was blown off in an explosive decompression that left a hole in the airplane and even reportedly tore the shirt off of a teenager sitting nearby. The decompression occurred at nearly 16,000 feet. No one was occupying the seat directly next to where the decompression occurred and thankfully injuries were limited to scratches. The aircraft landed without incident back in Portland where an investigation was promptly initiated. So far, the FAA has issued an emergency Airworthiness Directive to carriers operating the 737 Max 9 requiring inspection of the door plugs. These plugs exist because some carriers use more seats in the aircraft and thus require additional emergency exits. On United and Alaska Airlines planes, the number of seats is reduced, so the doors are fitted with a permanent plug. It's unclear how this plug failed and became loose enough to be blown off, but loose screws and bolts were found on other 737 Max 9s in United's fleet after the Airworthiness Directive. And this folks, is why you wear your seatbelt… Maybe Trevor Jacobs was onto something?? Next up this week is NASA, who has announced that they will unveil the X59 supersonic demonstrator. NASA, in partnership with Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, has been developing the X59 since 2018 when Skunk Works was selected to design, build and fly the demonstrator. The primary goal of the X59 is to prove that quiet supersonic flight can be achieved. The X59 will cruise at 55,000 feet, mach 1.4, and will be about 75dB. The aircraft will fly over selected US cities later this year as part of NASA's research to hopefully bring back supersonic air travel! We'll keep you updated with what we see out of the X59! Third up is the new Cirrus SR Series G7! The G7 is an update to the SR20, SR22, and SR22T with updates including 12-inch and 14-inch touchscreen displays, similar to those in the Vision Jet. Engine start is now a push-button start, again mimicking the Vision Jet. Cirrus has also added improved flight controls, incorporating a stick shaker on both left and right controls, an automatic fuel selector that switches tanks every 5 gallons, and flap protection to protect the pilot from accidentally deploying or retracting flaps. Interior additions include the 12 or 14-inch Garmin displays, dimmable task lights, accent lighting, two center console compartments, powered headset jacks, and USB-C chargers. Pretty cool updates from Cirrus affecting the new 2024 model SR aircraft! Alright, that's it! Happy new year and we'll see you next week! https://www.flyingmag.com/the-big-reveal-cirrus-shows-off-the-sr-g7/ https://www.nasa.gov/mission/quesst/ https://www.cbsnews.com/news/alaska-airlines-flight-door-plug-jack-teenager-shirt-passenger-kelly-bartlett/

With enough effort and development time, where's the limit on how much power you can extract from an engine? On this episode, Mark Mazurowski of Mazworx is here to talk about his own experiences in doing just that with Nissan's iconic 90s workhorse, the four-cylinder SR20. Use “MAZWORX50” to get 50% OFF our HPA Engine Building Starter Package: hpcdmy.co/enginepackagebMazworx is a well-known name in the industry — particularly if you have an interest in imports, but prior to starting the company two decades ago, owner Mark Mazurowski was about as far from the Japanese performance scene as you could get — being way more interested in classic domestic muscle. That all changed after enlisting in the US Marines, which eventually saw him posted to Japan, where he was exposed to the JDM sports car scene in what was inarguably its golden era of the mid-nineties. When the time came to leave, Mark was able to ship his personal S13 back to the States just in time to catch the explosion of US import culture. One mechanical engineering degree later, and Mark waded into the deep end by starting his own business. In this episode, Mark talks about how Mazworx quickly became the go-to outfit for all things Nissan SR20, as well as the many business successes and failures he's seen over the years and the lessons he's learned along the way.As we run Mazworx products on our own SR20VE-powered Toyota 86 endurance car, Andre couldn't pass up the opportunity to pick Mark's brain and extract plenty of hard-to-come-by SR knowledge. As you can imagine, this means the conversation goes way deep into Nissan's best-known four-cylinder, and there's a lot of wisdom to be found. Mark also discusses his SR20 billet blocks, as well as his own drag car, which runs a 2000hp version of the billet motor and was once the world's quickest and fastest four-cylinder. Times have moved on since, and the car is now sitting in seventh place… but there are plans afoot to take that record back by pushing boost way up to figures nearing 200psi, which should see somewhere north of an insane 3000hp using a compound turbo setup. With some great insight into what makes a tuning shop actually profitable instead of perpetually treading water, as well as an interesting comparison between the SR20 and the new gold standard Honda K20, there's a lot to chew on in this great episode of Tuned In with Mark Mazurowski of Mazworx.Don't forget, use “MAZWORX50” to get 50% OFF our HPA Engine Building Starter Package: hpcdmy.co/enginepackagebFollow Mazworx here:IG: @mazworxFB: Mazworx Racing EnginesWWW: mazworx.com

This 1100KG 900HP SR20 powered Nissan S15 Silvia was easy to pick from the crowd as one of the standouts at the latest World Time Attack Challenge as not just being good from afar, but even more exceptional upon closer inspection.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inOwner and builder Charles Warland took some time out on race day to chat to us about the Dream Projects S15 Silvia build including some of the reasoning behind its 2.2L SR20VE power plant over other options like the RB which Charles is also familiar with via his RB260Z build. Sitting 51mm back from its original location as per the Open Class rules, the SR20 runs the Nissan P12 Primera head and a billet block to produce 900HP from 34 PSI of boost via a BorgWarner EFR 9174. PMC Race Engines have been on board with this great package, and internally CP-Carrillo pistons, a Kelford Cam and Nitto 2.2L stroker kit handle the beating flawlessly which is an impressive feat for a new build and testament to the quality of the build.Charles also discusses why the GT Auto Garage prepped S15 uses a smaller turbo than what it could handle, and how Time Attack design legion Barry Lock (Of MCA Hammerhead and Mighty Mouse CRX fame) planned the build with Charles along every step of the way to make sure things were done right and done once in regards to chassis and aero setup. Driving the car to 3rd place in the Open Class with a time of 1:29.174 was FWD lap record holder Rob “Mighty Mouse” Nguyen who will be looking to crack that 1:28 mark in the RWD next time around we're sure.At just under 1100KG with 1000KG of downforce at 180kph the SR20 setup is certainly pulling its weight to keep momentum. With that said, a focus on the overall balance of the car and not just outright power it is well capable of the task and the change in rear suspension from a multi-link setup to a double-wishbone one helps ensure traction is maintained where required via the Hollinger RD6 sequential gearbox. A good range of sensors have been fitted for data logging purposes and with the help of the MoTeC M150, PDM30, and C127 dash help dial the car in to achieve faster and faster lap times.Want to learn how to tune EFI? Darren Palumbo of South Australia's Bullet Race Engineering joins us for this episode of the High Performance Academy Tuned In podcast. Specialising in billet blocks and heads, Bullet Race Engineering is a leader in near-indestructible engine components, and Darren takes us on a deep dive into his world of Solidworks and CNC mills.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inDesigning and creating an engine block out of a solid chunk of alloy is absolutely as complicated as you think. There's a huge amount of time and money that goes into just getting one product to market — Darren breaks it all down for us and also makes a good case for why going billet sooner rather than later can often be the best move for anyone looking to go seriously fast. With ultra-desirable engines like the RB26, 2JZ, or even SR20 becoming rarer and more expensive by the day, is there going to come a point where it makes more sense in the long run to just go billet instead of building from a factory motor? There's also a very interesting breakdown of why simply swapping to a billet block will result in a substantial bump in power, with no changes to any other components. Andre and Darren lastly talk about the interesting path he's taken to get where he is today with his business, and that includes the big mistakes that he's made along the way. As Darren explains, finding a gap in the market, dropping the big bucks on equipment, and having the right amount of knowledge is only part of what goes into making a business like Bullet Race Engineering successful.Check out Bullet Race Engineering here:IG: @bulletraceengineeringFB: Bullet Race EngineeringWWW: bulletraceengineering.com.auLearn more about Performance Engine Building by coming along to the next FREE lesson: https://hpcdmy.co/engineb

Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inMick has been a long time friend of Andre and of HPA, and comes into the conversation ready to lay down a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things engine building, dyno tuning, and drag racing. With a common shared interest in both Mitsubishi's 4G63 and Nissan's SR20 engine platforms, Andre and Mick go way off the deep end in this one. We couldn't quite tell if this conversation evolved into a 'who knows more about these engines' contest, or it was simply – to put it crassly – just a couple of very knowledgable pigs in sh*t, talking shop. Either way, it's a great listen for anyone who wants to get way into the finer details on what makes these two Japanese performance engine staples great, and not so great. Want to learn how to EFI tune? Start with some free lessons right here: hpcdmy.co/efilessonMick also drops a surprising amount of trade secrets into the mix over the hour-long conversation, and there are some great discussions on the differences between pump fuel, E85, race gas, and methanol – not just the price and the numbers, but what they all actually mean for a tuner sitting on a dyno. Do you enjoy listening to two experts go full geek on their chosen field? If so, this is the episode for you. Mick's Evo VIII tech tour: https://youtu.be/VUUx7AICy_c

Episode 20! The 966 Hosts discuss Gaussin's hydrogen-powered Dakar Rally truck in partnership with Aramco, why Saudi coffee is so delicious and how 2022 is "The Year of Saudi Coffee," the mining and minerals sector in Saudi Arabia, a discussion oil in 2022, and much more in the program's "Yallah" final segment.1:00 - Richard's one big thing this week is the first hydrogen-powered truck to take part in the legendary Dakar Rally set off Saturday from the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah. Produced by the French automotive startup Gaussin SA and sponsored by the state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco, the H2 Racing Truck ran the first 12-mile stage of the race as a demonstration vehicle.Gaussin also plans to install a temporary hydrogen-powered tent at the end of the race.9:15 - Lucien's one big thing this week is Saudi coffee.Saudi Arabia is launching a new publicity drive called "The Year of Saudi Coffee" as part of a drive to create awareness of the unique brew of one of the world's favorite drinks and perhaps create a larger market for the export of Saudi coffee. Lucien talks about how Saudi coffee is one of his favorite things about Saudi Arabia, and how it represents the famous Saudi hospitality and culture. In the past few years, coffee bean farms in Jazan have been given special attention as support for farmers has increased, and special care has been given to the Khawlani bean.14:16 - The first topic the hosts tackle today is the mining and minerals sector in the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia has the largest mineral deposits in the Middle East. And now, the government is looking to build on its resource endowment with a “new, modern and responsible mining industry in a new and emerging mining hub.” And the Kingdom wants to offer the opportunities in this sector to investors. In the west of the country, the Arabian Shield is a major source of precious and basic minerals such as gold, silver, copper, zinc, chromium, manganese, tungsten, lead, tin, Aluminum and iron. The upcoming Future Minerals Forum, an event focusing on the mining and minerals sector in the Kingdom, starts Monday, January 11-13 at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 25:33 - Topic 2, Oil's Price in 2022: a Bumpy year ahead? We're looking at a likely volatile year for oil in 2022. Oil is off to a strong start to 2022. Brent crude on Tuesday jumped to $80 a barrel, its highest since November, as OPEC+ agreed to stick with its planned increase for February. Oil is what Saudi Arabia wants to diversify away from, but still remains key in the short and medium term the Kingdom. The hosts discuss the oil market at the start of 2022. 39:05 - Yallah, the big finish for the 966 includes a quick discussion of six other top storylines to keep you informed heading into the weekend.•The Traffic Police of Saudi Arabia recently updated its list of fines due to the high rate of Traffic Violations. Autoville promises to be a wholly experiential and immersive festival, bringing an action-packed experience with stunt shows, driving experiences such as Tokyo drift ride-along, Suzuki Swift track experience, and sprint tracks, and a dedicated after-sales pavilion.•Saudi Aramco has awarded contracts worth more than $4.5 billion for five key packages meant for its giant Zuluf offshore oilfield expansion project in the Persian Gulf. Zuluf is currently said to be producing between 550,000 and 600,000 bpd of Arabian Medium crude and Aramco is targeting as much as 600,000 barrels per day in additional volumes from the Arabian Heavy reservoir in its next expansion phase.•Dolce & Gabbana is bringing its lavish Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria and Alta Gioielleria shows to Saudi Arabia for the first time on January 27."Known for staging large-scale, theatrical events that fuse emotion with high fashion, Dolce & Gabbana has previously shown its Alta Moda collections in a temple in Sicily, the storied houses of Milan and even inside New York's Metropolitan Opera House. Its last outing in August was in Venice's famed St Mark's Square, where the thunderstorms added to the theatrical beauty of the clothes."•Jahez IPO'd this week in Saudi Arabia, listing on Nomu, Saudi Arabia's Parallel exchange. The Saudi food delivery firm became the first Saudi tech startup to list on a public exchange in the Kingdom.

Alright, here we go! As if there wasn't enough on the plate of this solo business owner, family man, enthusiast, loon.... I'm starting a major build. This is a car that has occupied my daydreams for multiple decades and now, inexplicably, I have one. This is not going to be a series of me bolting on parts and reporting back. This is a series of me exercising some old skills and mostly, learning as I go. Expect triumphs, that are over celebrated, fails, that are completely transparent, and hopefully an insightful listen. This will be a 10 part series covering the car in its current state (totally naked chassis and some boxes of parts most of which, won't be used) to completion. This goal is to make this my rolling business car with a track duty focus. Datsun...SR20...Racebits...lets go! Dante@elusiveautoco.com @elusiveautoco @elusiveautoshine -enjoy the drive-

Website www.aviationnewstalk.com Opinion I liked the audio quality and thought you did a good job of explaining your credentials without bragging. You did a good job of teasing what is coming up in the episode as well as a few well-placed callbacks to previous episodes. The only thing I would change is the music between the opening and the news. I would put the music under the talking and so there would be less time of just music for the sake of music. Normally I would think the news would be something to put at the end of the show due to its short shelf life, but your news really had me sucked in and I wanted to hear more.Get A Full Review If you’d like a full review of your podcast, check out Podcast Review Show or if you need Podcast Consulting, Book an Appointment Today Be On The Show Sign up at Fiverr. com Once a quarter we will pull one of the podcasts featured on this show to get a full review on the Podcast Review Show. Everyone feels nervous to some extent when they go for a checkride, so we share 14 ways to reduce your anxiety before and during a checkride. Checkride anxiety applies to student pilots in particular because it’s your first checkride. But it also applies to all pilots who think that someday they’ll go for an instrument, or maybe a multiengine, seaplane, glider, Commercial, ATP, or CFI checkride. Professional pilots working for a Part 135 charter company or an airline, also have to periodically be rechecked. Here's a brief summary of the 14 ways to reduce your nervousness about a checkride. Note: You'll hear far more details about each one in the podcast. If possible, meet the examiner ahead of time. Clear the deck for at least a week before the checkride. Do whatever it takes to guarantee that you get a decent amount of sleep the night before the checkride. Make sure you have all of your paperwork in order. Become intimately familiar with the ACS oral section, Use a study guide like the ASA Private Oral Exam guide to help you prepare for the oral. Do a mock checkride with your instructor or another flight instructor. If there’s a gouge available, a report that someone has written about their checkride with your examiner, see if you can find it and read it ahead of time. Don’t get upset if you make some mistakes on your last flight before the checkride. Prepare for a long day; bring some food! When you walk in for your checkride, exhibit confidence, but not cockiness. Know that it’s OK to tell the DPE a joke. If you start getting nervous, and feel you’re not doing well, ask for a timeout. Go into the checkride with just the tiniest bit of indifference or apathy, so you won’t be too upset if you don’t pass. Click here for the listener survey. Today's program is an interview with Alberto Arroyo. He is a Senior Program manager for Microsoft and has had a long and distinguished career in the Software Business. A couple of years ago, Alberto was inspired to persue his Private Pilot's license. Most people begin their flight training in a basic airplane like a Cessna 152. But he fell in love with the Cirrus SR20 and decided that he would start his training in that airplane. The SR20 is a high performance single engine airplane with a very sophisticated glass cockpit display. When Alberto told me that he was going to start his training in the Cirrus, I was concered that it would be too much airplane for a beginner. But he proved me wrong, and he did just fine. I thought that it would be fun to have Alberto as a guest on the show to tell us about his experiences training on the Cirrus. It is a great interview that looks at flying from the perspective of one of our new members of the pilot community. We hope that you enjoy it!

When pilots think about stepping up to a high performance aircraft, the Beechcraft Bonanza, is often on their short list. And for most pilots who rent or own a complex aircraft, such as the Bonanza that one of the best ways to remain safe in these aircraft is to become a member of an aircraft type club, like the American Bonanza Society, which is in the news because it’s celebrating its 50th anniversary. We sit down with down with Tom Turner, Executive Director of the American Bonanza Society’s Air Safety Foundation, and ask him to talk in general about the many the services and benefits pilots typically get when they join a Aircraft Type Clubs, of which there are more than 100, and then we drill down and talk about the specifics of the American Bonanza Society and the services they provide for Beechcraft Bonanza owners and pilots. In this podcast, I pass along over 20 tips for student pilots and private pilots that CFIs thought would be so obvious that they didn't need to tell their students. Of course they were all obvious in hindsight! For example, for a first solo, the CFI hops out, the student taxies away, and then flies the around the pattern. You’d think it would be obvious that they need to lock the door after the CFI hops out. But it wasn't obvious to one student, who had the door open in flight….on his first solo. Plus listener email: We talk about how to prevent a jet-fuel aircraft, like the DA42 from being accidentally fueled with Avgas, which would destroy the engines. In Flight Problems If an engine becomes rough during flight, it could be because one magneto has developed a timing problem. In that case, switch to the L and R positions to see if the engine runs better in one of those positions. If it does, leave the magneto switches or key in that position for the rest of the flight and report the problem to your mechanic. Shutdown Mag Check Some checklists say to switch the mag switches or key very briefly to the Off position, so you can hear if the engine is stopping. If it is, that verifies that both mags are properly grounded. Then before the engine quits, switch back to the Both position and shut down the engine properly by pulling the mixture to idle. If there’s a mag key, it’s important that you do this check by turning all the way to the Off position, and not just turn to the L and R positions, as some CFIs insist. Turning to the L and R positions checks part of the grounding system, but it doesn’t check whether the switch itself works in the Off position! It's not unusual for an older switch to become corroded and fail to work in one position, so definitely do the shutdown mag check by switching briefly to the Off position. Do the mag checks and engine shutdown procedures properly, and you will greatly enhance your safety when you move a prop.
Episode 147 - Austin is in Chicago and sits down with Dave and Mike Lee of Touge Factory and Stance Suspension. Dave has been in the automotive scene for a while, being one of the first people to build an SR20 swapped 240SX. He was also one of the first to bring containers of JDM parts (overnight) from Japan. Touge Factory started a suspension brand, "Stance" in 2006 and the name of the brand is likely responsible for the "Stance Car" movement. Mike had no chance of not being a car guy after being around his older brother Dave. Dave also works very closely with many Formula Drift teams in helping them get the most from their suspension. From learning how shocks work from one of the most proflific Motorcross shock builders in the country to applying that knowledge into custom shocks for teams like time attack stars RS Motors, Formula Drift driver Forrest Wang, and numerous others, this show reveals some stories and reveals the roots of Touge Factory that many people have no clue even exist. Podcast Show Notes - Ep 2 After the News, I give my review of my flight in a 2017 Cirrus SR22 G6, which uses the Perspective+ glass cockpit. Here's a list of some features from that review. For full details, or if you're trying to decide between buying a new or used Cirrus, contact me and I can give you some guidance on the tradeoffs. For anyone interested in eventually buying the SF50 Cirrus jet, you may want to start your training in a 2017 Cirrus SR22 G6, since it has virtually the same cockpit! Most of the features differences I discuss about the 2017 Cirrus SR22 G6 are related to differences between the Perspective and Perspective+ avionics. But there are some external differences. For example, the Cirrus has keyless entry, so you can unlock it with a key fob. When you do, the new light tubes which wrap around the length of the wing tips illuminate. The lights stay on until you climb above 300 feet, when they switch to a pulsating "wig-wag" functionality, which greatly enhances the plane's visibility to other pilots. Some of the 2017 Cirrus SR22 G6 features you'll find inside include: Cell phone storage pocket on front of pilot seat. Optional automatic yaw damper turns on at 200 feet and off at 300 feet Weight & Balance page lets you enter weights, fuel, TKS, baggage, & plots position on graph. QWERTY keyboard makes it easier to enter flight planes At shutdown, flight plan saved and transponder set to 1200 Can load a Visual Approach to any runway using the PROC key Choice of Straight in, which takes you to a 5.1 mile final Or Vectors, which provides a curved path to a 1.4 mile final Visual approach also calculates a descent profile to fly Option to display sectionals, IFR high, or IFR low en route charts on MFD You can transfer flight plans between the airplane and an iPad or smartphone On Traffic Page, turn knob to sequentially view info for each aircraft Some of the new 2017 Cirrus SR22 G6 features on the PFD include: Can displays maps in HSI on PFD Coms – displays name of facility you’re talking to Aircraft Callsign displayed on PFD near Coms SurfaceWatch displays description of where you are located on ground Groundspeed displayed next to TAS at bottom of Airspeed tapeCirrus says the Perspective+ has ten (10x) times faster processing speed than prior Cirrus Perspective® avionics. I found no delays in using the displays. If you're interested in the new 2017 SR20, it has a power upgrade to a Lycoming IO-390 engine with 215hp! And it comes with a useful load increase up to 150lbs more. It also has the same wingtip lights and Perspective+ found in the 2017 Cirrus SR22 G6. General Aviation News ForeFlight Glide Advisor™️ helps you to quickly assess your landing options in case you ever lose engine power in flight. Using terrain, GPS data, and your aircraft’s best glide speed and ratio, ForeFlight shapes a glide range ring around your own ship icon on the moving map display. When Garmin released its NXi upgrade of the G1000 integrated flight deck in January, it also announced the new visual approach feature, and that has now been added to the GTN 650/750 touchscreen GPS/com/navigators. The visual approach guidance feature adds a new visual approach in the procedure menu, and it provides advisory vertical guidance “based on a published glide path angle or a three-degree glideslope from the threshold of the runway, while considering terrain and obstacle clearance,” according to Garmin. The procedure is designed to help pilots fly a stabilized approach. If the pilot hasn’t already selected the visual approach when nearing a destination airport with a flight plan loaded, the GTN automatically provides a short cut to load and activate the visual approach when the aircraft is within five miles of the airport. The Garmin G5 is a low cost, drop in replacement for attitude indicator and/or a directional gyro. It will be soon be available for certificated aircraft. The TruTrak autopilot will also soon be available for certificated aircraft. Aspen Avionics is offering a $1000 discount in April only on the VFR version of their PFD. UAvionics, introduced four new ADS-B products. And there's a new dual band ADS-B receiver from Dynon for LSA and experimental aircraft. In LSA news, the Viper SD-4 light sport aircraft was introduced at Sun n Fun. Belite introduces the low cost Chipper kit aircraft. In Privatization news, American Airlines CEO Doug Baker argues that airline trips have increased a half hour since 1979 and it attributes that to ATC delays. Max Trescott puts that myth to rest; in 1979, the airlines were flying 727s and 747s that were faster than any of today airliners. Also, airlines weren't padding their schedules so that they could improve their on-time performance reports now compiled by the Commerce Department. Also, members of the Trump administration are visiting Canada this week to see their privatized ATC system. In International news, the new electric Volta helicopter will give a demonstration flight at AERO 2017 in Friendrichshafhaven, Germany. It recently hovered for 15 minutes. And REMOS AG, has delivered the first production line copy of a GXiS that conforms to German Ultralight standards. The aircraft, registered as D-MIDA, expands the fleet of a flight school operation known as UTC, based in Schoenberg (EDPK), Bavaria. Once again, a California flight school, this time in Fresno, is closing its doors, and foreign students from Taiwan and other countries, who've paid as much as $58,000 to attend, may be out their money. NEVER pay a flight school more than 10-20% in advance, even if they offer you a discount. Drunk pilots in the news. A drunk pilot headed to San Diego overflew his destination by 70 miles and landed his Cherokee in a parking lot. And an airline pilot who passed out in the cockpit of an airline in Canada is sentenced to 8 months in prison. Harrison Ford has his day in court. After remedial flight training, his incident in which he landed on a taxiway at the John Wayne Airport is now behind him. Listener Question An air traffic controller asks "Is LPV the most accurate and is it considered a precision approach. Do you prefer ILS or RNAV?" Max tells him the LPV is the low minimums to which you can fly an RNAV (GPS) approach, and while it's almost exactly like a precision approach, it doesn't meet the international definition for a precision approach. Max prefers the to fly an LPV approach, though flying an ILS is easier for pilots who aren't expert at using their GPSs!
GA News, fuel exhaustion tips & listener question on autopilot use for GPS approach to LP minimums. How do you fly a GPS Approach with an advisory glide path, such as an LNAV+V or a LP+V using an autopilot? APR, or Approach mode works great with an LPV approach, but it won't level off the aircraft when flying a non-precision approach. After the news, we answer a listener question about a WAAS GPS instrument approach with LP approach minimums. He was flying the RNAV (GPS) X Runway 31 approach into Hailey, Idaho. He said, “on final, I hit APR on my S-TEC 2100 and yes, it captured ‘the glide slope,’ I put GS in parenthesis because it’s a non-precision approach, so technically there is no GS, but yes, the S-Tec capture it. Ok, here is the rub: I’m descending down and sure enough, the autopilot takes me BELOW 6180’ MSL, the MDA for this approach. And yes, it’s snowing and full disclosure, I can’t see the runway environment but it does pop into view at about 6000’MSL (roughly 750’ AGL). My bad. My fault. “So here is the mistake I think I made: 1. I should NOT have hit the APR button on the S-TEC 2100. It captured the GPS GS, when in truth, there is none on an LP approach. And it lulled me into thinking I was safely on a GS. Is this correct? 2. In other words, I turned a non-precision approach into a precision approach when it does not exist. I should have NOT hit the APR button. 3. Having hit the APR button, I noticed on the S-TEC, that any ALTITUDE numbers were erased. Second question: could I have hit the ALT button when I noticed I had slightly descended below the MDA of 6180? Would that have stopped my decent? “Lastly, when I got home I researched LP approaches AND looked at both the JEPP chart of the RNV (GPS) X 31 and the Government Charts. Interestingly, the JEPP charts shows a dotted line of the what I will call, “GS guidance,” and it shows a dotted line BELOW the MDA. The Government chart does not. I’m not looking for excuses, but it seems to me the JEPP chart in this case, almost encourages you to get on the GS, rather than ‘dive and drive.’ ” My response, in part, to his question includes: You fell into one of the WAAS traps that I’ve discussed with others, but I haven’t seen documented anywhere. The issue is that the APR key of most autopilots will couple to any glide slope (ILS) that’s present, or any glide path (for GPS) that the GPS manufacturer has included in their database for a particular approach. This works great for ILS and LPV, where you have a DA and can descend below minimums while making your decision to land or go around. It works poorly for any LNAV+V, or in your case, LP+V advisory glide path. With the advisory +V glide paths, autopilots don’t know to level off at the MDA for these approach types, and they continue through minimums as if these approaches have DAs, which they don’t. So you should monitor the approach and plan to push the autopilot’s autopilot just before you reach the MDA, so that you don’t descend below the approach minimums. For this and more about GPS approaches, I recommend my Max Trescott’s GPS & WAAS Instrument Flying Handbook. General Aviation Flying Tips We share some thoughts about how to avoid fuel exhaustion (running out of gas) and fuel starvation (gas not making it to the engine) type accidents. It’s important to know before you depart how much fuel you have using more than one source of information. For example, you should ALWAYS visually inspect the fuel in the tanks. In addition, you could look at fuel gauges, see how many gallons were added if you’re present during refueling, or if it’s a rental aircraft, see how long plane was flown on previous flight. If you use a fuel stick, may sure you put it straight down into the tank, and not at an angle. For some planes like the Cessna 210, the fueler has to put the last few gallons in slowly, otherwise the tanks won’t be completely filled. Some things that could happen in the air which might lead to fuel starvation include: Faulty gauges, Plugged fuel vents, Gas cap comes off in flight, Blocked fuel filter, Ice in fuel lines, Vapor lock, Failed fuel pump, or Failure to lean, which uses more fuel. Some pilots like to run a tank dry in flight. I don’t, as sometimes the aircraft won’t start immediately after you switch tanks. Therefore, if you do plan to run a tank dry, switch it at altitude; don’t wait to switch until your low in the pattern, where if the tank runs dry you might not have time to restart the engine. Cessna started installing “LOW FUEL” annunciator lights in their C172s, 182s, and 206s beginning in 1997. The annunciator turns on whenever there is less than 5 gallons in a tank in a C172. At one point Cessna claimed that they have had no fuel incidents since these fuel annunciator were added. In older Cirrus, the fuel annunciator sensors in the tanks are connected in series. For example, in older SR20s, the sensor doesn’t come on until the fuel quantity in both tanks drops below approximately 8.5 gallons (17 gallons total with tanks balanced in level flight). Since both tanks must be below 8.5 gallons to illuminate the light, it might not illuminate until there is as little as 8.5 gallons total on board, if one tank was allowed to run dry. General Aviation News NATCA, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association honored controllers at the 13th Annual Archie League Medal of Safety Awards banquet in Las Vegas. The awards are named for Archie League, who was the first air traffic controller. We play the ATC audio from an accident involving a Piper Aztec. According to an NTSB report, on March 27, 2016, the aircraft departed Charlestown, SC for Baltimore. The pilot stated that the flight departed with 5 hours of fuel onboard for the estimated two and a half hour flight. After about one hour the pilot reported to air traffic control that he had lost his directional gyro and attitude indicator. While diverting to Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA), Roanoke, Virginia, the right engine abruptly lost power. After switching fuel tanks, power was briefly restored to the right engine, followed by an abrupt loss of power in both engines. Our next story comes from the Wichita Eagle with the headline “FAA forecasts decline of 17,500 piston airplanes” “The FAA’s 20-year forecast expects the general aviation fleet to increase from 209,905 airplanes and helicopters in 2016 to 213,420 in 2037, a weak 0.1 percent annual increase. During that period, turbine aircraft – business jets and turboprops – are expected to grow at an annual clip of nearly 2 percent a year. Offsetting turbine growth (and helicopters’ annual growth rate of 1.6 percent) are piston airplanes. The piston airplane fleet is expected to shrink 0.8 percent annually, the FAA forecast said, or by 17,500 aircraft over the next two decades. The FAA uses input for its forecast from sources including its 2014 General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey, as well as discussions with industry experts. Earlier this month, investigators were confused by the crash of a Cessna in the woods earlier this month just before midnight near Manitouwadge, Canada, which is just north of Lake Superior. At the crash site, they found the Cockpit was empty and there were no footprints in snow around the wreckage. Earlier in the day, the Cessna 172 had been rented by a 27-year old experienced pilot who was also a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan. He was from, China, studied artificial intelligence at the university's School of Information, and hoped to one day work in aviation safety. Please believe he committed suicide by jumping from the plan in mid-flight. In an ironic twist, officials at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport are now using drones to inspect runways and document pavement issues for future maintenance. Traditionally, the FAA works hard to keep drones away from airports. The FAA granted a waiver to the airport and a surveying contractor to allow drones to be flown in the restricted airspace of the airport. The aircraft will be used to make accurate surveys of areas of the airport that are slated for changes in the $6 billion ATLNext construction project, AvWeb reports “Boom Technology Raises Additional Capital To Support Supersonic Demonstrator” Boom Technology, which is developing a supersonic airliner has raised an additional $33 million to fund development of its one-third-scale demonstration aircraft. Boom CEO and founder Blake Scholl says “our mission is to make supersonic flight a reality,” and expects to see the XB-1 fly in 2018. If successful, Boom says the XB-1 will be the first independently developed and privately funded supersonic jet. The company indicates the final production aircraft will be capable of carrying passengers at costs comparable to business-class on modern wide-body jets. EAA Announces VMC Club First there were IMC Clubs, now EAA introduces VMC Clubs for non-instrument rated pilots who want to improve their proficiency. The VMC Club is modeled after the popular IMC Club concept, which provides organized “hangar flying” focused on building proficiency in instrument flying. The VMC Club will do the same, but for pilots who are not instrument rated and fly primarily under visual flight rules and under VMC. The VMC Club offers monthly meetings in which pilots can network and share knowledge and experience. Earlier in the year, Harrison Ford mistakenly landed on a taxiway at John Wayne Airport, after being cleared to land on a runway. TMZ released the audio from his phone call to the tower immediately afterwards. He starts off by saying “I’m the Schmuck who just landed on a taxiway.” We disagree. Everyone makes mistakes, and he owned up to his. A Schmuck would have said, “it wasn’t my fault, and nobody got hurt so what’s the big deal?” Hopefully, all pilots, including Harrison Ford, learn from their mistakes and avoid making any of the fatal ones!
