In this episode of "Got Clutter? Get Organized!", we have a special guest, Shari Braendel, who has been a pioneer in the image industry for over 30 years. Starting her journey in Miami, Florida, with a degree in Fashion Merchandising, Shari transitioned from working as a buyer and manager in a cosmetic department to founding her own image consulting firm. Shari's career flourished as she moved to North Carolina, where she began speaking and writing after a successful stint with Mary Kay, earning three pink Cadillacs. In 2010, she authored her first book, "Good Girls Don't Have to Dress Bad," and launched the Christian Image Consultant Academy. A few years later, she established The Color Academy to meet the growing demand for color analysis training. Join us as we delve into Shari's insights on personal style and color analysis. We discuss what motivated her to help people discover their true selves through understanding their personal style and colors. Shari shares the impact of wearing colors that don't suit us and explains how the right colors can transform our wardrobes and overall image. Tune in to hear about my experience with Shari's virtual color analysis. We're going back to the days when the geeks inherited the earth...specifically, the bands that were influenced by the monumental commercial and artistic triumph that was Weezer's 1994 self titled album (or, as it's affectionately known, The Blue Album). That's the subject of the new oral history and accompanying 11-track compilation album Generation Blue, out now from Big Stir Records and Spyderpop Records. Compiled and edited by this week's Third Lad, S.W. Lauden, Generation Blue is a fascinating celebration of the '90s Hollywood scene that included bands like Ozma, Nerf Herder, Baby Lemonade, Chopper One, and more. S.W. Lauden (aka Steve Coulter) was not only an active participant in the Geek Rock and Power Pop scenes, drumming for a series of LA bands like Ridel High, Tsar and The Brothers Steve, but is also accomplished writer. He is the editor of the essay collections Go All The Way: A Literary Appreciation of Power Pop and Forbidden Beat: Perspectives on Punk Drumming. His power pop-themed crime fiction novellas include That'll Be The Day: A Power Pop Heist and Good Girls Don't. He is also the author of the Greg Salem punk rock PI trilogy, starting with Bad Citizen Corporation. Find more of Steve's music writing on Substack at Remember The Lightning, including his semi-annual print/ebook Guitar Pop Journals. Christina Henry is a horror and dark fantasy author whose works include Horseman, Near the Bone, The Ghost Tree, Looking Glass, The Girl in Red, The Mermaid, Lost Boy, Alice, Red Queen, and the seven-book urban fantasy Black Wings series. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her latest novel, Good Girls Don't Die. Key Takeaways Be the exception. Christina didn't have an agent representing her when she landed a three book turned six book deal with a publisher. Sometimes you can be the exception to the rule. Discover as you go. While some writers have a lot of success outlining their stories, Christina chooses to see where her stories take her. This leads to her feeling surprised at her own stories and hopefully translates to readers absorbing the author's sense of excitement and wonder as they turn each page. The Story may present Itself. We like to think that we are in control of our stories and often sit down with a specific intent as we begin to write only to find that a different story emerges. That's okay—follow your curiosity and not your intention. Write for you. Christina breaks another rule in that she doesn't think of “the market” when she writes her stories—she thinks about herself as the target. While many “experts” will tell you this is a recipe for disaster, Christina's success suggests otherwise. We're joined by Christina Henry for a fun chat all about her book Good Girls Don’t Die, playing with genres, her disdain for Brad Pitt, and why she prefers running alone. Christina Henry's books are enthralling, heart-wrenching, and will leave you in awe... which makes sense when you hear about her deep love of movies that are much the same. This conversation delves into her love of samurai movies, how she's begun taking her kid to classic movie theaters, and the Iron Giant... It makes sense. Today on Vulnerable, my dear friend Mara Wilson is back, and it's such a joy to talk with her again. You might know Mara from her iconic childhood roles in Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire. She's also an NYU graduate, accomplished writer, and child actor rights advocate. Mara opens up about what it was like to step back from a successful acting career, her unique experience as a student at NYU, and how often fame is misunderstood. She also talks about the healing and hardships that came along with writing her new memoir, “Good Girls Don't.” What other child actor went to NYU with Mara? She takes musical influences from various genres and artists, which will be later reflected in her works. Starting with classical background, she spent her early years listening to orchestral music and musicals, and received piano lessons and vocal training. In her teenage years, she took up pop singing and drum classes. She was also exposed more to jazz, R&B, hip hop, Latin, and electronic dance music later in college as well. She began performing onstage at a young age. She was involved in singing and theatrical performances. By the age of 21, xs started by posting professionally produced covers and mashups of international pop songs and musicals. She also enjoyed injecting her humour into songs by making parody covers where she creatively changed the lyrics to share current trending topics. Her videos have amassed more than 1.6 million views across the internet. To pursue her music career, xs started writing her own originals in 2020. Later that year, she was signed with Flipside Productions and began working closely with renowned producer and music expert Hangi Tavakoli. Ms. Vijai Nathan is a comedian, storyteller, writer and trainer - entertaining people across America and internationally too. Vijai's stories have been featured on NPR's “Snap Judgment” and "Invisibila Live.” She's also a contributing writer for The Washington Post Magazine's Date Lab. Vijai grew up as a "foreigner" (or at least that's what everyone called her) in the suburbs of Washington DC where she was born. Her material comes from her experience as an Indian girl in America - raising two immigrant parents, dating boys with mothers who wished their sons could find a nice blond girl named "Tiffany," and the universal quest for love, understanding and a good pair of undies. Vijai has the honor of being one of the few South Asian artists to be invited to perform at the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian, Library of Congress and Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. She is also the writer and performer of one-woman shows such as, "Good Girls Don't, But Indian Girls Do," and "McGoddess: Big Macs, Karma, & the American Dream.” Visit www.vijaicomedy.com. Damn the Torpedoes is the third studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and is the album where the group truly broke out into serious commercial success. They had done well with their first album, with "Breakdown" breaking into the top 40, and "American Girl" receiving some air play. But this album took the group to a different level. Damn the Torpedoes was their first top 10 album, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard album charts for 7 weeks. They were unfortunately kept out of the number 1 slot by the release of Pink Floyd's The Wall.Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are Mike Campbell on guitars and keyboards, Benmont Tench on keyboards and backing vocals, Ron Blair on bass, Stan Lynch on drums and backing vocals, and of course Tom Petty on lead, rhythm guitar, and harmonica. Petty also produced the album.Damn the Torpedoes takes its name from Admiral Farragut's famous Civil War quote, but also reflects an attitude that the band was feeling. At the time ABC Records was their distributor and assigned the contract to MCA. Petty said that they couldn't assign the contract without permission. MCA sued, and Petty declared bankruptcy as a strategic move to keep MCA at bay. They finally settled by signing a new contract with Backstreet Records, which was an MCA subsidiary. The times were good for Petty's style of throwback rock and roll. Disco was quite commercial and beginning to wane, and New Wave was just beginning its run. MTV would also be a couple of years in the future. The rock world was starved of solid rock and roll, and Petty was ready to step into the void with tight, radio-friendly singlesWe think this album is a winner, but as you know, even the losers get lucky sometimes! RefugeeThis is the second single from the album, released in January 1980. It went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Petty and Mike Campbell wrote this, and it was one of the first songs Campbell wrote. The song reflects the band's reaction to the pressures of the music business, and the struggle they had with MCA.What Are You Doin' In My Life?A deeper cut, this track is about a stalker girl that the guy can't make go away. "Well, you're the last woman in the world that thrills me. Now you got my girlfriend trying to kill me. Honey, my friends think that I've gone crazy. Can't you figure out that you ain't my baby?"Even The LosersBelieve it or not, this was not released as a single on the album outside of Australia. There's a story behind this song. Petty had a crush on a girl named Cindy in junior high school. Years later in Gainesville, Florida, he hooked up with Cindy. The next morning, Cindy told him their relationship consisted of only that night. During that night, Petty realized that he needed to be in a rock and roll band, and this song sums up that night.Don't Do Me Like ThatThis is the first single from the album. Petty wrote the song back in 1974 with a band called Mudcrutch. This was Petty's first top 10 hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The singer relays the story of a friend who got his heart broken, and asks that his girlfriend not do the same. I really like the sound of the organ on this piece. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Rose by Bette Midler (Main Theme from the motion picture The Rose)The song was a huge hit for Midler. She played the main character, Mary Rose Foster, in this movie loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin. STAFF PICKS:You're Only Lonely by JD SoutherRob starts off the staff picks with a track from Detroit born, Amarillo raised JD Souther. His former roommate, Glenn Frey, sings backup on this song, along with Phil Everly and Jackson Browne. JD Souther co-wrote a number of songs for the Eagles, which explains why this song may have a bit of an Eagles sound to it. Driver's Seat by Sniff N' The TearsWayne's brings us a one hit wonder. It maintains a simple chord structure throughout, but builds in intensity as the song progresses. Although we think of it as a driving song, the lyrics are really about disjointed feelings following a breakup, and not understanding how things would be over with someone you had been with so long.Good Girls Don't by The KnackBrian's staff pick was the follow-up to the massive hit "My Sharona." Lead man Doug Fieger wrote this song in 1972, but couldn't get anyone to pick it up at the time. He hated it by the time The Knack tried it, and they got it right in one take. Jane by Jefferson StarshipBruce brings us a hit from Jefferson Starship while Georgia native Mickey Thomas was front man. It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bassist David Freiberg wrote the lyrics (along with Jim McPherson) inspired by an old girlfriend. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Is There Anybody Out There by Pink FloydWhen The Wall kept Damn the Torpedoes stuck at number two, Tom Petty told Westwood One, "I love Pink Floyd but I hated them that year."
Fashion Meets Faith with Shari Braendel “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” -Psalms 37:23 NLT Shari Braendel is president of Fashion Meets Faith and author of Help Me, Jesus! I have Nothing To Wear (Zondervan). As president of FMF, Shari has helped thousands of women reveal who they are in Christ and shine outwardly with confidence through her conferences, online instructional videos, podcasts, consultant training, and more. As a Christian speaker, she has presented over 500 events in 18 states, including Hearts at Home, She Laughs, and She Speaks and has shared the stage with Nicole C. Mullin, Lysa TerKeurst, and Karen Kingsbury. She has appeared on Focus on the Family, The Total Christian Television Network (TCT), K-Love, Crown Financial Network, Moody Global Ministries, and more. Shari saw firsthand that women didn't recognize the beauty that God gave them and lacked the knowledge of how to dress themselves with confidence. She knows women often judge themselves based on the world's standards and are forever coming up short. As a fabulously fun fashionista, Shari takes women on a trip through the fashion DO's, explaining why it's important to dress the body they have, not the one so prominently displayed on the cover of the latest fashion magazine. With electric and exciting stage presence, Shari delivers a message that women no longer need to conform to the pattern of the world, but can be confident and self-assured no matter their size or shape. Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Mental health care is a crisis in Australia, affecting 1 in 4 Australians at some point in their lives - so what does our mental health care system look like, and what’s it like to experience a mental health condition in Australia? On this episode of Good Girls Don’t Ashleigh shares her story and experiences of navigating the convoluted system that works to devalue and deny the experiences of people with mental illness, including the dramatic impact of trauma. We chatted about: How easily mental health conditions can go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or mistreated for a long time. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is the 3rd most commonly diagnosed mental health issue. So why don’t we hear about it? What’s the difference between PTSD and C-PTSD? Why does Trauma get swept under the rug or get ‘forgotten’ about psychologically? What happens when Doctors behave badly? The impact of medication on mental health but also the emotional and physical impacts. The stigmas attached to mental health, especially borderline personality disorder, bipolar, and schizophrenia. Why mental health isn’t always appropriately funded by the government. The hardships of actually being able to access mental health care. With Covid#19 on the loose and the Great Toilet Escapades running havoc in cities across Australia, what better time to bright up your day with an episode about - poo! You know we got down to the nitty-gritty of Poop and Fluffs too, asking the BIG and important questions: Who farts more? Men or women? What’s the “Dead Rat Rating”? What IS poo actually made of, and why is corn the only vegetable that shows up? How do you know if your poop is healthy? Why are most beach models covered in poo but rarely realize it? What the hell is a ‘squatty potty’? And do sloths really dance when they poop? Yes! Verity and Ashleigh answer all those poop questions you’ve been dying to have answered all these years. Whether you think it’s gross or not you’re still going to laugh and find plenty of fun facts about poop you’ll be compelled to share at your next dinner party! Don’t deny it! Join us for one hilarious episode because, apparently, Good Girls’ Don’t Poop!
