This is the podcast where we smash those rules we've been taught to follow both as men and women, burn the darn rule book. We'll tackle the big issues, the issues nobody wants to talk about and we'll be fiercely feminist about it. This podcast is about inspiration, education, compassion and being th…

After our own Ashleigh Rae successfully charged a man with sexual violence, she shares with us what happens when it comes to sentencing and what it means for the victim and the offender. Please note that the conversation refers to Victorian legislation around sex offending and the specifics do not represent the legislation and regulations of other states and territories. Here’s what we spoke about; The difference between a plea hearing and a sentencing hearing. Why does the register exist and what does it mean for the perpetrator, the victim & the community? How children can be placed on the sex offenders registry. What’s restorative justice and should it be compulsory? Should the Sex Offenders Registry be made public? The importance of educating ourselves and our children of the criminal implications of innocent ‘sexting’, and how easily young teens can get themselves and their girlfriends/boyfriends and peers into serious trouble.
In Australia, up to one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage. 103,000 Australian families are impacted each year. And yet, for many, it remains a silent trauma. Miscarriage is a taboo topic affecting 282 Aussie women a day that can cause long-lasting grief and mental health problems. Why are we not talking about this? So we want to start a conversation about it and create an episode dedicated to allowing women to share their stories around miscarriage. We want to stop the silence and start sharing. Join us and an array of courageous women as we share our stories around Miscarriage. Join us today as we honor the stories of Verity, Bess, and Sandi. In a society that dictates a strict definition of what masculinity is and demands rigid expectations upon how men and women should conform to binary gender roles, the struggle to inform others that non-binary people exist is real. Nic Lawrance takes the time to chat to us about their incredible experience of living as non-binary person, growing up without the language to express their identity and journey of acceptance from family and peers, finding that safe space to explore and express gender identity, and some of the present perils fraught in the legal system discriminating against gender diverse people. Nic Lawrance is a brilliant and powerful non-binary burlesque performer. Nic has performed at Fringe Festival and throughout Perth, Western Australia blending ideas of the feminine and masculine, challenging the norms of what is traditionally acceptable or expected of masc presenting humans. Normalize the idea of asking for pronouns, like you would ask someone's name Reclaiming the word ‘Queer’. What happens when ‘males’ don’t fit into the “mans club”. Medical gate-keeping that prevents people from ever being able to own their identity. The dangers of identifying oneself as non binary to organisations and institutions when you’re filling out forms. The difference between sexuality and gender. Why all humans, even men should be able to feel pretty. The legal implication and limits of identifying as non binary gender And why inter-sectional feminism is crucial to the freedom of all minority groups. We loved Nic’s vulnerability, their wisdom and generosity as Nic shares their heartfelt stories and experience of fighting for one’s true identity. If you’ve ever felt confused about the conversation of gender fluidity, what the hell it all means and why we should even be talking about it, or even how to move forward in your own gender identity this episode is for you.
Co-host Ashleigh Rae shares her experience of seeking justice after being raped as a child. It's a deep conversation and not for the faint hearted. We discuss her compassion for the offenders family, the obstacles and support through-out the process of seeking justice and the complexity of emotions around obtaining accountability and justice. We discussed; The reactions and responses from loved ones. The rights of survivors and offenders of sexual violence. The sensitivity and insensitivity of professionals involved. What it feels like to confront the offender with an impact statement. We questioned the appropriateness of current sentencing / legal consequences. And how the justice system needs to change to serve both the survivor and the offender in a holistic manner. Its a conversation that all men and women should listen to, because there is so much we can learn as a society to not only know how to support those affected by sexual violence but to also understand the necessity of educating all men and women in order to prevent sexual violence. Soo...what happens when your sex life is dead? We know how it goes: find the man, get married, have the kids, and that's the end of your sex life. But what if that isn't how it has to be? What if we could have a deeply intimate sex life with our spouse, and toe-curling orgasms to-boot? We were curious if such a thing was possible, so we sat down with one of Australia's most qualified Sexologists, Isiah McKimmie. But she isn't just a Sexologist. She's also a Couples Therapist, a Sex Therapist, and a Tantra Teacher - so she knows her stuff when it comes to intimacy which means, we put our burning questions to her about how to resuscitate a dead sex life, including: What happens when your sex life is deader than Tutenkamun? What are the first steps in re-igniting the intimacy and passion in your relationship? Why does sex become transactional? Why sex is the socially acceptable way for men to ask for intimacy Why do we need to reconsider having sex during a pandemic - surely it's the perfect time for more romps? Yup. Lots of sticky, gritty questions. Lots of juicy, tantalizing answers. Mental health care is a crisis in Australia, affecting 1 in 4 Australians at some point in their lives - so what does our mental health care system look like, and what’s it like to experience a mental health condition in Australia? On this episode of Good Girls Don’t Ashleigh shares her story and experiences of navigating the convoluted system that works to devalue and deny the experiences of people with mental illness, including the dramatic impact of trauma. We chatted about: How easily mental health conditions can go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or mistreated for a long time. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is the 3rd most commonly diagnosed mental health issue. So why don’t we hear about it? What’s the difference between PTSD and C-PTSD? Why does Trauma get swept under the rug or get ‘forgotten’ about psychologically? What happens when Doctors behave badly? The impact of medication on mental health but also the emotional and physical impacts. The stigmas attached to mental health, especially borderline personality disorder, bipolar, and schizophrenia. Why mental health isn’t always appropriately funded by the government. The hardships of actually being able to access mental health care. Sometimes, out in the wild, we find ourselves in front of a microphone on someone elses podcast and they're kind enough to roll with it and see what happens. Today, Verity is interviewed by Margie McCumstie from The Wedding Wombat... In this special Valentine’s Day edition, we meet Verity Mansfield, Relationship Coach and extraordinary woman with a powerful message about love, sex, romance and marriage. We talk about how to make your relationship juicy and your marriage even juicier! 8 years ago Verity found herself collapsed on the bottom of the shower floor, hoping the noise of the thundering water would drown out her gut-wrenching hysterical sobbing, so her kids wouldn’t hear her fall apart. She didn’t feel broken. She felt destroyed. Her marriage was falling apart. The kids were not getting the best of their mother. Her workplace was sucking the life out of her. She felt disappointed, disconnected and dead inside. Something had to give or Verity0 was going to explode. So she hit the ‘red’ button. You know the one they say only to hit in an emergency? Verity walked out of her marriage, out of an international fashion career and without looking back plunged into the darkness of the unknown with two toddlers, a mortgage and $136 cash. In that moment, Verity broke the “good girls rules” and chose a life of integrity and authenticity. With the wisdom of hindsight and a successful career as a Relationship Coach, Verity shares from a real place to inspire everyone listening in this episode to enjoy juicy relationships- with yourself, with others and whether you choose marriage… or not.
While we take a moment to catch our breath and re-organize the universe, we've partnered with the good folks from the podcast, Gertie's Law to bring you an incredible episode on how the Supreme Court of Victoria changed women's ability to access abortion safely: Fifty years ago, the Menhennitt Ruling was an example of judge-made law and it determined the legality of abortion in Victoria. In this episode of Gertie's Law, we find out why it was left to the Supreme Court, and not the parliament, to decide on such a controversial social issue. Hear from judges and people directly affected by the 1969 ruling. It's a brilliant piece of audio wizardry that showcases the bravery of the Doctors who put themselves at risk for women to have access to birth control and the fascinating details of how it all went down in the Supreme Court of Victoria. We hope you love and enjoy it as much as Ashleigh has, and binge their entire series. As women, we’re designed to have babies. Even if we don’t want them our bodies are ensuring they remind us every month, for every year for over a 40yr span that we’re baby-makers. Granted there are women who have ZERO interest in having kids and that's absolutely their right to choose. But what happens and what does it REALLY feel like to know that you do not even have a choice? What happens when we desperately want a child but our body just won’t allow it? Today Marie Louise shares her personal journey with us of her experience of being infertile and navigating marriage, divorce, dating and just the everyday existence of being female and infertile in a patriarchal world. Why being infertile makes us feel like less of a woman. How do you date knowing you might crush his dreams of having a family? How can the rest of us childbearing women be more sensitive and understanding towards women who can’t bear children? And most importantly how does a woman move on with the acceptance of never being able to do what her body is biologically designed to do, heal from that acceptance and build a life that brings her unlimited joy, love and happiness? Well, tune in because Marie Louise is about to tell us! Who is Marie-Louise, Anyway? Marie-Louise Pawsey knows first-hand the hurt and trauma of being Infertile and Single. Since realizing that she wasn’t living her life as fully as she could be, she made the tough decision to sever ties with hope, and start living a more ‘flirtile’ life. She’s most active on her Youtube channel where she publishes her tried and tested, unique and controversial views and guidelines to dating. Now, she’s supporting Single, Infertile women who are ready to give up the dream and start living the amazing life they can carve for themselves! At least, that's what happened for our guest this week, Shilpa Agarwal, when she kept denying herself the permission and freedom to go for a simple jog. Women are told since childhood not to take up too much space. Whether we’re told to ‘don’t be too smart’, or that we talk too much, or that being ‘big’ is bad and we all have to be thin and skinny, women are constantly exposed to these subliminal messages that we shouldn't take up too much space. So how does this affect us in business, whether we’re entrepreneurs or vying for a position on the board? What stops us from taking up space in the business world and getting more vocal and more visible? What is the ‘imposter complex? Why are we afraid to be labeled ‘bossy bitch’? And is collaboration really the answer to patriarchal competitiveness? If the Universe is constantly expanding shouldn’t we be obliged to expand too? Who is Swapna Thomas, Anyway? Talking about open relationships feels pretty taboo, gossipy and darkly intriguing and yet Tani Beister creates the most beautiful and honest conversation of what it really takes to consciously create a loving open relationship. Explore the deeper values of intimacy, connection, transparency and freedom. Why having open relationships doesn’t make us sex fiends. The difference between open relationships and infidelity. What the real landscape of open relationships honestly looks like. How open relationships actually open us up to understanding our own true self. How do we deal with jealousy, shame, guilt and fear of judgment when we open our relationships up? The only way to create an open and loving relationship. Why serial monogamy is acceptable yet we believe in committing to one person for life. Can we have our cake and eat it too? Who is Tani Beister, Anyway? Tani is all about chasing pleasure and breaking all the rules. She claims to be a rebel/lover, creator/destroyer, hedonistic/sadistic bad bitch. Contradictory huh? Yep! She’s all about giving herself permission to express ALL the parts of her. She has not always been this unapologetic and radical in herself or her relationships. Due to years of deep, uncomfortable, heart wrenching internal work, she says she is now free from trying to please everyone in her life except herself (husband included). Tani met her husband in high school and they have now been together 17 years, with a 13yr old son. Two years ago after reaching a stalemate in her marriage, despite trying everything to take it to the next level, Tani unexpectedly experienced falling in love with someone else. She had no intention of ending her marriage and instead she managed to open it and pursued two relationships. As a result, she found herself on a journey that awakened her sexuality, gave her an abundance of freedom, self-expression and also forced her to heal core wounds such as abandonment trauma and codependency. Tani’s marriage is now more fun, pleasurable and supportive than she ever could have imagined. The next level that she was searching for in her committed relationship, she found in opening it up and exploring the world of polyamory. Tani is a Relationship Coach for women in long term relationships and she guides them towards their own liberation. Sally Hetherington OAM is the founder and CEO of Human and Hope Association Incorporated (Australia). At the age of 25, Sally bought a one-way ticket to Siem Reap, Cambodia, with the goal of helping people living in poverty. A few months into her journey in Cambodia, Sally realized that the sustainable development of a community cannot be achieved through the involvement of short-term foreign volunteers. The realization led Sally to transform a community center that was reliant on foreign volunteers, into a locally run NGO registered organization - Human and Hope Association (Cambodia). We spoke to Sally about: The danger of unskilled volunteers. Why skilled volunteers are making skilled Cambodians redundant. Our impact on children at risk and how voluntourism adds to the lack of stability and impacts their attachment issues. How empowering women creates an intergenerational increase in education, allowing women to rise, and reducing domestic violence. How can we be ‘ethical travelers’ and be conscious of the footprint we leave behind in the countries we visit? Why the term ‘third world’ needs to be eradicated in order to combat poverty. Who is Sally Hetherington, Anyway? Sally is a multi-award winning leader in the not-for-profit sector. Her outstanding contributions to the Cambodian community led her to receive awards such as the Medal of Order of Australia (2019), The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) World of Difference Award (2019), Third Sector Awards Volunteer of the Year (2018), and Junior Chamber International (JCI) National Ten Outstanding Young Persons Honouree (2018). Kelly Petering is a superhero. And a female! So often in society Superheroes are depicted as male-orientated. Even in cartoons like Paw Patrol, the ones taking the risks and saving the world are male. So when we came across Kelly who has been a volunteer firefighter and a community officer assisting paramedics in her community, we just had to pounce on her! Kelly is an Entrepreneur, Speaker, and Trainer and helps women around the world build confidence within themselves so they can SHINE in the areas they have always wanted to. Her extensive experiences have enabled Kelly to learn a thing or two about cultivating the art of self-confidence, even though she grew up as a quiet and self-conscious 'good girl' who was always afraid of putting up her hand in class. That was until Kelly found out that confidence could be LEARNT. We chatted to Kelly about; Her experience as a pregnant firefighter, and the stereotypes around women, especially mothers, putting themselves ‘in the face of danger’. Why connecting to our community is so crucial, and yet we live in disconnected societies. Her journey from a painfully shy child to a courageous and confident superhero. The difference between confidence and courage. How to create resilience around criticism and ‘feedback’ Who is Kelly Petering, Anyway? Hi, I’m Kelly Petering... Entrepreneur, Speaker and Trainer and I help women around the world build confidence within themselves so they can SHINE in the areas they have always wanted to! Having travelled the world, worked as an actress, voice-over artist, tour guide, emergency management officer and now entrepreneur, I’ve learnt a thing or two about cultivating the art of self-confidence. It wasn’t always that way, however, I grew up a quiet and self-conscious 'good girl' who was always afraid of putting up her hand in class… too nervous to look people in the eye. That was until I found out that confidence could be LEARNT!! I was like whoa! Hold on a second… Do you mean that it’s not determined at birth (as I had presumed)??? I was like… well, I'm actually quite good at learning… maybe I can learn how to be like all those confident people I had secretly been super jealous of! You see, now, I truly believe that life is meant to be LIVED - danced through with energy and passion - not tiptoed through with fear like I used to… and I see so many others doing right now. Through online training programs, transformational workshops and retreats, women just like you, have the opportunity to experience and learn tools, strategies and techniques to grow their own confidence in all areas of their lives… all in a safe and supportive environment. **WARNING** This episode contains a lot of swearing and deals with strong themes of sexual violence. Please take care while listening and look after your mental heal and wellbeing. Female Genital Mutilation is on the rise in Australia where it is strictly illegal - but why is this the case? On today's episode of Good Girls Don't Podcast, Verity and Ashleigh sat down with activist, advocate, and all-round fierce feminist, Khadija Gbla to attempt to wrap our heads around what FGM is, and how it's happening in our neighborhoods. We spoke to Khadija about: Her powerful, viral TEDTalk that she winged, from the heart How humor helps to ease the discomfort of a taboo topic and opens the door for real discussion The three types of FGM FGM in the white, western world (it's more common than you might think!) How FGM is being perpetrated by Doctors and backyard practitioners The devastating, lifelong trauma and impact of FGM Unpacking the intersectionality of FGM, how and why it's done and; What it means to the Mother-Daughter relationship of survivors The road from victim to survivor and choosing to take back your power, every day Who is Khadija Gbla, Anyway? Khadija Gbla is a high profile, passionate and inspiring African Australian woman. Why does Valentine’s Day trigger so many people? You either REALLY love it or you REALLY hate it. Why do we feel so much pressure to conform on Valentine's Day or to completely dismiss Valentine’s Day, leaving many partners worldwide feeling angry, unappreciated, resentful and dismissed? Valentine's Day for people in relationships can be a minefield waiting to explode. Why do we dismiss Valentine's Day as commercialized and yet engage in the radical commercialization of Christmas, Easter, Fathers Day and Mother’s Day? Why do so many of us resist Valentine's Day? How can we see our attitudes around Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to reflect and understand our relationship we NEED to have with ourselves? Why expectations destroy relationships, but why Valentine’s Day is possibly one of the most important days of the year. How can we tune into the power of Valentine’s Day whether we are single or not? Is there a better way to truly rebel against the commercialization, comparisons, and expectations around Valentine’s Day and still truly embrace our self-love and self-worth with fierceness? Who is Verity Mansfield, Anyway? Verity is a self-love/relationship coach and mentor who works with women to break those “Good Girl Rules” so they can really acknowledge the truly magnificent beauty within, to realize they are more powerful than what society dictates, and that they can determine their own self-worth and embrace the power within to consciously create powerful and passionate relationships - with themselves or another. Tzara Attwater walked in one day on her partner (of 10yrs) and best friend (of 18yrs) having sex. Double betrayal. After her journey of recovery and healing, Tzara dedicated her work to helping others to also recover from betrayal, to heal their wounds and to move forward in a new direction - with or without their partner. When current statistics state that 1 in 4 relationships experience sexual betrayal and the emotional pain of infidelity, it's highly likely you know someone who's been through this or is experiencing it right now. And yet - no one speaks about it! Which is why WE ARE! We asked Tzara nitty-gritty questions that you want to ask when it comes to infidelity and cheating but that we’re too scared to ask; How do you know whether to stay or go? How can we deal with well-intentioned friends pressuring us to leave them when we don’t want to? How do we deal with their judgments? Why we beat ourselves up when we’re the ones that have been betrayed? and why that can just lead to layering even more limiting beliefs and crush our self worth? How do we bounce back after a betrayal and create healthy boundaries? How do we get past the betrayal, repair the bond and even WANT to engage in that relationship with the person who betrayed us? Is it possible to rebuild the lost intimacy and trust once broken and what does that really take to do it? Women the world over are pushed and pulled between two opposing ideas of who we must be: the Saintly Mother, or the Whore. The expectations and pressures of both run deep inside all of us and permeate our cultures regardless of language, religion or politics. For centuries, we've been torn between both opposing identities and now in the modern world women are finally, in some corners of the world, able to be much more than a Saintly Mother or Whore. She can be both, she can be more - she can be whomever she wants but it all begins with reawakening deep respect and reverence for her body. Who is Mia More, Anyway? Society seems obsessed with being skinny and perfect. But while getting skinny isn’t going to get you #instafamous, the fear of ‘fat’ can limit us to staying small and living off the scraps of love and worthiness (including paychecks). We talk with the larger than life Jay Crisp Crow on how her disability became a superpower, how she smashed her own self-imposed glass ceilings, why it's’ important to feel the fear and do it anyway and why you can be both fat AND beautiful. Who is Jay Crisp Crow, Anyway? In her old life, Jay Crisp Crow juggled a family, a disability, and a communications job that sucked the juice from her bones. Then she had firm words with herself, found her voice, and took her own gig on the road. Jay writes blow-your-hair-back premium copy for brands, big and small, and teaches women in business how to write copy that sells through coaching, consulting, and courses. She regularly presents in Perth and online on everything from Staying Away From Safe Copy to Disability and Business and Being Both Fat and Successful. She co-founded a social enterprise with her Queen Ruler daughter, Ella, and in 2019 launched her first podcast - So Crisp. Why is there so much shame around our periods? Why do our periods seem like a burden, something that diminishes us and our ability to function in the world instead of being a source of empowerment? In today's world of self-empowerment, our periods are still used to control, and negate a female's sense of self, especially in disconnecting her from her body. This was such a fabulous and educational conversation about menstruation, and how to work with our hormones instead of against them. We also talk about bringing men into the conversation and how menstruation can help bring balance to the entire family, the effects of the pill and the chemical controlling of our bodies from fertility to the coffin, and what we need to teach our daughters. And most importantly, does chocolate really help? Who is Stasha Washburn, Anyway? Stasha is known as The Period Coach. A Certified Holistic Health Coach and 20+ years of research have fueled her passion to reconnect women to the power in their cycles. To end the taboo of menstruation worldwide, no big deal. Stasha is changing the conversation around periods from whispers in the ladies' room to empowered public discussions. Stasha spent 20 years searching for a way to relieve her Endometriosis, and in the process discovered how to help women balance their hormones, through both science and ‘woo’. Remember that time you were in the car, at the meeting, picking your kids up from school or doing the groceries and suddenly you realized your period had leaked through your clothes? We’ve all been there and been embarrassed and most of us have probably had a tampon or pad in our handbag or asked another woman for one whose gladly given it. But what if you live below the poverty line and you have to choose between food and pads? What if you’re homeless the only options available to you are McDonald's napkins and newspaper? Here’s the crazy part: women in Australia are facing this every single day. So Verity and Ashleigh sat down with Rochelle Courtenay from Share the Dignity Australia, to ask her: What is Period Poverty and how many women are affected by it? What happens when women can’t access sanitary products? Why were pads and tampons classed as luxury items? We also dug into Rochelle’s big vision and how her fire was ignited - and how we can all help support women in need and where to next for Share the Dignity. Who is Rochelle Courtenay, Anyway? Rochelle, affectionately known as “Pad lady” didn’t set out to be a social entrepreneur yet her work to help eliminate period poverty in Australia has created a nationwide movement through her not-for-profit charity, Share the Dignity. Share the Dignity has collected more than 1.9 million packets of sanitary items since its formation with the support of over 4,500 volunteers. They’ve managed to raise over $45million dollars worth of sanitary products for women Australia. Rochelle designed a world-first Dignity Vending Machine, known as the Pinkbox. The vending machines are purposely designed to dispense a free period pack of sanitary items. By the end of 2019, there will be 200 Pinkboxes installed in poverty-stricken schools, homeless centers, domestic violence shelters and areas of severe poverty Australia-wide. Show of hands: do you know how to use a power drill, or install windows on a bus? Neither do we. And it’s one of the unlikeliest places you’d expect, at least based on patriarchal gender roles - for a woman to find her purpose. But not only did Sarah Taylor find a deep, meaningful purpose to building her internet-famous bus, Ms. P, she also discovered who she was and exactly what she was made of. Today, we spoke to Sarah about how humans like you and us can choose to create businesses that are not only environmentally responsible and sustainable but are a manifestation of our deepest held values and ensure that we’re making the world a better place than when we found it. Here's the highlight reel of what we spoke to Sarah about: Unhooking from the mainstream marketing noise Accessibility and giving back - not when we’re rich but right here right now, at any point in our journey Being the architect of our life and embracing the trust and power within ourselves to live on our own terms Why we should stop trying to “park the bus” The torture of not fitting in and turning that into the one thing that turns our life around “It’s our job to make sure humanity thrives and survives.” “If my business was a minimalist what would I do?” Who is Sarah Taylor, Anyway? Sarah Taylor, affectionately known as “The Bus Lady” is building her own bus conversion, off-grid tiny homestead and is an intentional business coach. She helps women unhook from mainstream marketing so they can sell without compromising their values. Sarah is a digital privacy advocate, environmental activist, permaculture student and in her spare time she likes to find ways she can help dismantle systemic economic slavery. Didn't we solve this with #AustraliaSaysNo and all the other awareness campaigns? Heck no! And that's why we tracked ourselves an expert to talk to us about what's really happening in Australia when it comes to domestic violence. Enter, 25-year psychotherapy veteran, Anita Bentata. We chatted to her about: Feminine principle hemispherectomy. What is it and why it’s CRUCIAL to resolving domestic violence. Why women don’t want to identify with being in domestic violent relationships, and why conversations around DV fall on deaf ears. Why women (and men) stay in domestic violent relationships. Why domestic violence is increasing regardless of the increase of awareness campaigns over the last decade Why ironically anger is an expression of self-love And why embracing the feminine within ourselves whether we are female or male, is the solution to the prevention of domestic violence. Pour yourself a coffee, or a glass of wine and sink your teeth into this juicy gem of a conversation! Because domestic violence DOES happen and there is something YOU can do about it. Who is Anita Bentata, Anyway? Anita Bentata is a psychotherapist who has worked in the field for 25 years specializing in trauma and abuse, especially around Domestic Violence. After publishing her book, The Wolf in a Suit in 2016 she realized that awareness was only creating more overwhelm and outrage around domestic violence and wasn’t changing anything. Anita began developing her own solutions so that women don’t have to wait for powers in the public to change the conversation around domestic violence. Take Part in Our Listener Survey - Click Here! Why do we not talk about Menopause? And when we do, it’s all the fear and drudgery of it that never leaves us feeling empowered to be a female or to look forward to aging with grace and wisdom. Chantal Vanderhaeghen chatted to us today about the truth about menopause and debunking the myths and fear around the ‘crone’ as an ugly, jealous malicious archetype that is so personified by the wicked stepmother and evil witches of folklore and fairytales. Here we had 3 generations chatting about the power of sharing their stories, and listening to the wisdom of their elders. We chatted about; Deconstruct the fear of aging Dropping the shame around menopause The fear of becoming invisible as we age Why we focus on only the negative aspects of this transition more than puberty and motherhood. How the beauty industry depends upon us fearing the Crone. Stepping into the Crone with a sense of empowerment, embracing our intuition, wisdom, and experiences. Who is Chantel, Anyway? We love feminism and yet so many people keep asking us exactly what do we mean by ‘feminism’? Well, who else would be more perfect to talk to than emerging Author, Copywriter, Blogger, Mother and #OpinionatedWoman, Jennifer Zeven. Jennifer's articles have been featured in Whimn, Kidspot, and Roooar! Magazine. She is one of Medium's Top Writers in Feminism and is taking time away from copywriting to write her first manuscript. Visceral, raw and necessary, Jennifer shares her experiences of early Motherhood and exposes the way Motherhood defines Womanhood - whether you have children or not. We talked about; Motherhood and feminism, and how the patriarchal construct of motherhood robs us of our identity. Why women are villanized for choosing to opt-out of motherhood. Why misdirected anger is destroying the sisterhood The cognitive dissonance of mourning pre-motherhood yet still loving our children. Why as privileged white women we need to not only find our voices but use them for all the women around the world whose voices are silenced... How do you reconcile with your body when you feel it’s betrayed you? Befriending your (un)friendly monthly reminder that your body was meant to be designed to have babies. For 3 years she’s mentored women and men in dating, and how to get into and maintain lasting romantic relationships. She’s most active on her Youtube channel where she publishes her tried and tested, unique and controversial views and guidelines to dating. Now, she’s supporting Single, Infertile women who are ready to give up the dream and start living the amazing life they can carve for themselves! When they’re ready to strut into their new life, free of shame, negative and the self-doubt which has caused them to deny themselves happiness, Marie-Louise is here to give them a place where they belong, and help them get the prince! If good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people, and if the good are rewarded and the naughty are punished, what happens when bad things happen to good people? This premise is the basis of ‘Victim blaming’. Instead of holding a criminal responsible, society screams, “Well she must have been asking for it!”. Did you give mixed signals? Why were you alone at night? Where you drunk? How short was your skirt? She was dancing like a slut. She slept with the other guy, why not me?? Well it's not like she said ‘no’. She should have said it louder. She didn’t put up much of a fight, What was she even doing there? Well, she was flirting with him. She didn’t act like a rape victim afterward. Yeah. Even a current Liberal Member for Parliament when asked about his views on domestic violence replied, “Domestic Violence is a woman’s issue”. Seriously? If those responsible for creating the laws think this way, what hope does society have? From sporting communities' involvement in gang rapes, Australia’s high domestic violence (1 woman dies a week in Australia as a result of DV), date rape and sexual harassment the onis is often on the women's’ responsibility to not put herself in such a situation. So when are we going to stop excusing men for their bad behavior (oh boys will be boys) and start demanding that perhaps its time for men to learn to control themselves? Working with women in relationships, women constantly ask, “How do I get my partner to open up?”. As women rise, so many of us are feeling like our men are getting left behind. So how do we support them and inspire them to rise while acknowledging and accepting their own divine timing to step up? And this is where we stumbled across Aaron Spence. If you haven’t met Aaron you probably should. He’s cool, confident, intelligent and has a great sense of humour all in a laid back, easy-to-get-to-know kinda way. And he gets ‘men’. Aarons’ been coaching for the best part of 28 years. Working initially in sports, he expanded to business and life coaching and has worked with an amazing array of people from Olympians and national representatives through to people working through suicide and cancer survivors. Today Aaron works much more closely with men, particularly around helping them step into their masculine energy. Regaining their drive and passion, ultimately helping them have the most amazing relationships with themselves, their kids, business and importantly, their partner. What do men want from their relationships? How can women help their partners open up emotionally? Are men really ‘simple’ creatures? Or are they lying to themselves? What are the best ways women can inspire their men to rise, as they rise? So pour yourself a cup of tea, or even a beer or wine, because you are going to LOVE this conversation as we dive into the secret world of men! If you go looking for it, you will find a plethora of women’s empowerment circles and communities - but for real equality to rise, there also needs to be space for men to gather together and take part in their own spiritual, emotional and psychological development. So we sat down with Tyran Mowbray, affectionately known as The Hairy Healer to talk about bringing men into the fold, developing their own spiritual practice, healing and maintaining emotional health - and boy oh boy, does Tyran have a lot to say about how men can return to love, and how women can be part of the experience and even a guiding force. We explored the embarrassing, strange, silly, deeply personal and deeply intimate emotions surrounding healthy, delicious, magical experiences of sex and sensuality and how to cultivate our King, and unleash the Queen. Verity and Ashleigh are kicking back with tea and tim-tams for another week and while they're gearing up for more episodes, you can re-live the incredible, inspiring work of Dr. Lorel Mayberry from Borderless Friendships Western Australia. This episode originally aired on July 28th 2019. Child sex trafficking. We know it happens but most of us assume there is NOTHING we can do. How wrong we are. Dr. Lorel Mayberry, the president of Borderless Friendship WA opened our eyes up to the truth about the vulnerability of hills tribe children in Northern Thailand. Currently, in Thailand, there are over 50-60K children in the hidden sex trade. While we were expecting a heavy emotional episode, we actually were surprised by how joyous and inspiring this interview was. If you’re up for saving the world and making a difference, this is the episode for you! Who is Dr. Lorel Mayberry, Anyway? Dr. Lorel Mayberry lectures in sexology in the award-winning Department of Sexology at Curtin University in Perth and has been involved in the area of sexuality education for more than three decades. In between her university commitments, she travels to Northern Thailand working in partnership with Lahu (a hill tribe group) friends to enhance the lives of hill tribe children. These children are the most vulnerable to the shocking practice of sex trafficking. Lorel is the inaugural president of Borderless Friendship WA, a not-for-profit group, that was started 10 years ago.
Did you miss this incredible episode with Men's Health Advocate, Catherine Lyell? While we're away for the next two weeks, take this time to aquaint yourself with some of our earlier episodes including this powerful goldmine that originally aired as episode 5, back in June 2019. We all understand that porn, and the porn industry, creates a lot of negative messages around sex and women, but how many of us really take a moment to understand or realize the negative impacts porn has on our boys and men? With research showing that the average age of boys being introduced to porn is 11years old and that 93% of men under 18 years have watched porn, shouldn’t we be concerned with the effects porn has on males? Watching porn is happening earlier than it ever used to, and it’s more hardcore and accessible than it ever used to be, especially as most boys have easy access to mobile phones, iPads, and other devices. Studies and articles state a direct correlation between the watching of porn and erectile dysfunction, anxiety, depression, and even suicide. In a world where pornography is not going to disappear any time soon, it is imperative that as adults and parents we step up and increase the conversation around porn with our loved ones and even our children.
