Despite strides toward gender equity, women in the workplace continue to encounter systemic challenges that hinder their career progression. While representation in executive roles has improved over the past decade — rising from 17% to 29% of C-suite positions, according to McKinsey — women, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, remain significantly outnumbered. In this episode of The Business of Learning, we spoke with Neha Trivedi, CPTM, HR director, learning and development and talent development at Alight Solutions, to learn more about how L&D can help support women's career growth. Research from Gartner found that 91% of sales leaders reported that finding relevant content and tools for reps is a struggle without a dedicated enablement platform. So how can you simplify the rep experience with a unified platform? Shawnna Sumaoang: Hi, and welcome to the Win Win Podcast. I’m your host, Shawnna Sumaoang. Join us as we dive into changing trends in the workplace and how to navigate them successfully. Here to discuss this topic is Carolyn Hoang, the senior director of sales enablement and effectiveness at Alight Solutions. Thank you for joining us, Carolyn. I would love for you to tell us more about yourself, your background, and your role.Carolyn Hoang: I’ve been at Alight for a little over a year and I was brought on to help develop and grow our sales enablement function at the org. My role today has evolved a little bit and right now I’m focused on supporting and developing product education and enablement and ensuring we have a robust and effective product training and enablement process as we anticipate upcoming product launches and releases. As for my background, I’ve been in healthcare, health insurance, and the PBM space for 20 years. I initially wanted to become a pharmacist like my sister but found my niche and enjoyment on the corporate side of the business around operations and product strategies. So I’ve always said my life purpose has been helping others. So any way that I can make that impact in any role I’m always fulfilling my purpose and that’s where it landed me here in sales enablement at Alight. SS: We’re really excited to have you with us today, Carolyn. Now, you did mention that one of your specialties is improving efficiency in business operations and processes. How do you help drive efficiency for the business as an enablement leader? CH: There are so many ways that we can help drive efficiency in any business, but you have to start by understanding how the business operates. So the way that I look at any organization as I come into it is understanding how are they at maturity level in a current state. For example, process analysis and optimization, always conducting a thorough analysis of existing business processes. How do we identify bottlenecks and any inefficiencies, and what are those areas for improvement? Another area would be working closely with all of the cross-functional teams, ensuring that we can streamline or redesign business processes and eliminate any unnecessary steps. Or automate any repetitive tasks that we can. That means establishing those standardized procedures or best practices across the organization.SS: Now curating the right tech stack can have a huge impact on efficiency. And prior to Highspot, you had several tools, including a different readiness platform. What were some of the challenges that this led to? CH: Yeah, assessing the right tools and technology integration or tech stack is so important for any business. And I can’t stress that enough. Some of the challenges I’ve seen most frequently is just those fragmented workflows, utilizing just multiple tools that a rep or a seller needs to switch between different platforms or accessing information or content that needs to at the right needs at the right place. A place that’s been challenging data silos. So every tool has its own data repository, but when they’re not speaking to one another or the systems are not integrated, that poses also a huge challenge. And then, yeah, that lack of integration between platforms that is used by multiple different client facing teams. Having that all centralized in one place eliminates that. And that’s something that I found at our organization, was that the level of integration and content management needed to be consolidated and ensure that our reps – all of our customer-facing reps – have the right content and consistent content, at the right time.SS: What was the impetus though, for making the switch to a unified enablement platform and ultimately to implement Highspot? CH: Yeah, in my early assessment here, I immediately saw a need just for greater integrated workflows and business processes that would ultimately centralize and create that seamless integration data across all of our customer-facing teams and all of the various enablement tools and tech stacks. So many factors went into ultimately making the switch to Highspot as our go-to platform. But it’s more about the technology that can support our organization and our organization’s, ever-evolving needs and help us enable our sellers most effectively and efficiently.SS: Fantastic. And in your opinion, what is the strategic value of consolidating your enablement tech stack into a unified platform rather than separate disconnected tools? CH: I would say improving efficiency and productivity across multiple business teams. So that’s, again, data integration insights are just so important, as it helps us inform and better enable our reps through those data-driven insights and decisions that we can help continuously improve our content, our training, our platform, and also the enhanced user experience. So, having that unified platform really provides a seamless and intuitive experience on the front end, and the back end as the user, as the administrator, and really improve our user adoption and satisfaction. So having a consistent interface and navigation across all of our enablement functions and teams, our reps can easily find the right tools, resources, and things that can lead to increased engagement and effectiveness. SS: I love that, how you guys are thinking about both an integrated data and experience perspective, that’s fantastic. How did you go about building the business case with your stakeholders for making this change? And I think a lot of our audience would love to hear some best practices for gaining stakeholder buy-in. CH: Engaging your various stakeholders as early as possible in the scoping process when building your business case is key. So keeping them continuously informed and engaged throughout the process. I always say partnership and collaboration; that’s key when you take time to understand the various stakeholders. How do you identify those businesses and teams that you will work with on a day-in and day-out process? How each of those teams operate, what are their pain points, and how can we help solve those business challenges together? Aligning different use cases and identifying what those use cases are. That resonates with each of our stakeholders and ensuring that they’re aligned on what our enablement vision goals and business outcomes that we can achieve really help solidify the buy-in and understand the “what’s in it for them” and “what’s in it for us together”.SS: That’s a fantastic approach, always put it in the perspective of your audience, even internal ones like stakeholders. Now, you recently launched Highspot actually at your company’s sales kickoff. Can you tell us about that launch and how you leverage that key moment to help build up momentum for this change?CH: Launching Highspot at sales kickoff was just such a perfect opportunity for us to generate buzz, and excitement really leverage different gamification opportunities to drive that early adoption and early engagement with the platform. So before we developed or kicked off at our event we built what we call the sales kickoff spot in Highspot, so that’s where reps can access all the information they need to go to before they attend the event, like the agenda, travel details, any pre-work or training that we want them to prepare or review before the sessions. We also included this fun Easter egg in our SKO page where we use gamification like that launch experience to incentivize our sellers to complete any pre-recorded raining and get folks driving excitement and buzz around, what is Highspot? What can it do? And to go to our Highspot booth that we had in our partner expo so what we did is we had the first three folks who finished training, found the Easter egg phrase, and went to the Highspot booth and mentioned it, then they all won a prize. After SKO, we communicated with the winners and recognized their efforts to encourage others to participate in it, but also really sprinkle that pride. Fun and strategic learning right throughout the platform. And that helps folks from a user experience perspective to learn the platform, play around with it understand the processes, and again, help drive continuous engagement and options post-launch. SS: I love that, that sounds like it landed well with your teams. Now I know you guys are also using Highspot to help optimize your onboarding program. I know that’s a key initiative for you all this year. How do you plan to optimize your onboarding program and how will leveraging Highspot help you to do CH: New hire onboarding is so crucial to get right at any organization. So ensuring our reps are fully enabled with the right product knowledge and know how to position and recognize the value of messaging that resonates with the various buyers and prospects they’re talking to is key. At Alight, we made a huge effort to prioritize and build a strong and effective onboarding program this year. And that’s something that we continue to focus on building out and continuously iterating throughout the year as well. SS: Amazing. Now, I know that you guys are just getting started with Highspot, but what are some of the key ways that you’re measuring the impact of your enablement programs on business results?CH: On the example of, the onboarding program and where we’ve been focusing on improving our onboarding program is really taking that in it and seeing how we can improve our time to productivity in our first sale for our reps. Understanding how do we increase the time it takes for a new hire to onboard, learn about all of our various products and solutions we offer and really be comfortable and confident in saying, Speaking, having that first effective conversation with their prospect or buyer and ultimately be able to execute the first deal. So that’s something that we’ve been focusing on, in addition, to pipeline generation ensuring that we’re able to help our sellers generate more pipeline, lead conversions, and increase in win rate. SS: Amazing. And all the top-line things the business cares about. Now, looking into the future of Alight, what are some of the key goals you have for enablement in the next year and beyond? And how do you plan to leverage Highspot to help achieve these? CH: Some key goals this year are centered around driving sales effectiveness. I would say, enhancing our customer engagement and accelerating our business growth. So we plan on leveraging Highspot A1 by optimizing just our sales content, and our content strategy. To continue consolidating where our customer-facing teams are accessing the right content at the right time, making sure it’s relevant and effective at any stage of the buyer’s journey, right? Enabling them to engage their customers and really drive better outcomes. Also enhancing our sales-readiness. As we continue to invest in our sales readiness initiatives, we want to make sure that our sales teams are well-equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to succeed. So Highspot and the platform play a crucial role in delivering personalized training, coaching, and some of those on-demand resources we’re building out to support ongoing learning and development. I would say another area is just really driving that alignment across teams, again, breaking down those silos, ensuring that our teams that support enablement, like sales, marketing, product, and other key functions, really provide a seamless customer experience. So, we’re planning to deploy some key integrations coming up between Highspot and our CRM system and some of our marketing automation tools. That will help us streamline that experience and those workflows to enable our reps to be more effective in driving revenue growth. I would say lastly, it’s like scaling our enablement initiative. So as our organization grows, we continue to scale our enablement programs and how we enable to support the needs of our expanding Salesforce and sales teams. Highspot’s scalability and flexibility allow us and help us enable and deploy the programs that we need at scale and ensure consistent delivery of the resources that we support across our organization as well. SS: Wonderful. Carolyn, thank you so much for joining us today. I really appreciate it.CH: Thanks so much for having me. SS: To our audience. Thank you for listening to this episode of the win podcast. Be sure to tune in next time for more insights on how you can maximize enablement success with Highspot.

Do you have old retirement plans or 401ks that you've lost track of, but you're not sure where you can find and gain access to those accounts? On this week's episode, I'm going to cover four ways you can locate those old retirement plans and discuss how to put them to their best use. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... The three places your old retirement account money could be [1:49] Using your social security number [3:35] Searching unclaimed property databases [5:51] An exciting solution from the industry's leading retirement plan providers [6:57] What to do with your money when you find it [8:32] Where is your money? It's been estimated that there are billions of dollars sitting in old retirement plans that people have forgotten about. If you have an old 401k or retirement plan that you've lost track of, there are three places where that money could be right now. If your employer is still in business, it's easy to track them down and find out where your old 401k has gone. However, the size of the balance left in your retirement account will most likely determine where the money is. If you have less than a $1,000 balance, your 401k provider can cash in that account and send a check to you. If this is the case, you want to follow up because the original check is likely invalid, and there could be tax consequences for not rolling the money over within 60 days of the original check being issued. If you had a balance between $1000 and $5,000, the old retirement plan provider can't send you a check, but they can move that account to another IRA. Finally, having a balance over $5000 is the easiest option because chances are it's still with the employer-sponsored retirement plan. It's simply a case of you gaining access to that account. Finding old retirement accounts What do you do if you don't know who your old 401k provider is anymore? Maybe it's been a few years. Maybe your former company has merged a few times, or they went out of business altogether. It still might be a good idea to contact your old 401k provider to see if they still have an account open for you. If you're unable to locate your 401k through your administrator, your next step is to try and look it up with your social security number through various unclaimed retirement benefit registries. And if all else fails, there are several multi-state unclaimed property databases that could be helpful. Hopefully, one of the three options above yields results, but it can be a lot of work. Recently, a trio of the industry's largest 401k administrators (Fidelity Investments, Vanguard, and Alight Solutions) have teamed up to try to alleviate some of the stress and tax problems that go along with old 401k balances. They've put together a clearing house of sorts where anytime you leave a job with an old 401k balance, after a certain period of time these companies will talk to each other and automatically try to transfer that money over to a new qualified window quickly. If it's less than $1,000, but they don't know where to send it, or it comes back because it was in cash, they would take care of that. And if you have another retirement account with them, they'll try to automatically move that money over to that plan for you. This episode was one of the most popular episodes in the past 12 months. Since it aired, there was a show with Kevin Schulman, MD (EP366), that added some context, which I would recommend, and also one with David Muhlestein, PhD, JD (EP364). Those two shows and this one are a good three-pack. And hey, here's something new that we're going to try out. Coming up in December, Dr. Bricker and I will host a smallish virtual chat to discuss the topics covered in this episode. It will be a conversation, not a presentation, so therefore the “why” behind the “smallish.” If you are kinda thinking this is something that you'd like to do, go to our Web site and scroll down to the “Join the Relentless Tribe.” When we get our act together, we'll send out the details for how to sign up in a future email. I'm thinking it will be very cool to get a chance for the great people who support our show enough to actually get a weekly email to talk amongst ourselves! In this healthcare podcast, I'm speaking with Eric Bricker, MD, about how so many entities in healthcare are getting up in other people's business and swimming in other people's traditional lanes. We kick off the conversation talking about the payer, PBM, and hospital system horizontal consolidation that has transpired over the past decades (that's plural). Horizontal consolidation is pretty much the easiest way to decimate all competition in your own swim lane so that you can charge more and not worry so much about patient/customer/member experience because the patients/customers/members have no better alternative. They effectively have nowhere, or few other places at best, to go if they leave you. So, what's the impact of horizontal consolidation? Commercial insurance costs have gone up 4x the rate of other benchmark goods and services. Let's spend a moment, shall we, on the human impact of all this extreme consolidation. The impact is your sister, your neighbor, your son, your friend. So many feel so much pressure financially in our country today because of healthcare costs. Even families earning significantly more than median household income are forgoing care because of costs. This was in a recent paper. (The authors are Alyce S. Adams, Raymond Kluender, Neale Mahoney, Jinglin Wang, Francis Wong, and Wesley Yin.) But the direct observable financial toxicity resulting from high healthcare patient costs is really only the tip of the iceberg here. As Dave Chase from Health Rosetta has said a million times already, high healthcare costs have a multitude of effects on employers, big and small. One big one is, if healthcare costs more, then there's less money for salaries. Dave, citing lots of evidence, has long attributed wage stagnation in this country to accelerating healthcare costs, which became even more rampant during periods of industry consolidation. Dave Chase leads Health Rosetta, by the way. Here's another human toxicity: Listen to episode 337 with Oliva Webb on the impact on her life as a result of the undeniably and unquestionably common non-excellent treatment by the PBMs and SPPs that she has to deal with. Because, as Dr. Bricker also says, no competition means basically not a whole lot of concern about patient experience. Why should a for-profit business spend money to improve something when there's nothing really to be gained for them financially to do so? I mean, the best a patient can do most of the time is hop from the frying pan into the fire. That's what happens when there's no competition or no real competition. Also consider the burned-out clinicians who have to get stuck in the middle of this nobody-really-cares-at-the-monopoly customer service paperwork quagmire. By the way, here's a sidebar that might come as a surprise to some people, but please take this in the spirit with which it's intended. All of us innovators and lifelong learners, we want to update our beliefs when the facts show us an updated conclusion. So, I have learned that all of this consolidation was going on long before the ACA (Affordable Care Act). My point here is to please look into this well-documented trend line before reflexively tweeting that the ACA drove consolidation. Dr. Bricker and others like Dr. Mai Pham have told me that, in their opinion, low interest rates, cheap debt, and a desire to eliminate competition are wildly powerful drivers of consolidation. Anyway, about eight minutes into the interview with Dr. Bricker, if you're one of the ones who knows all you care to know about horizontal consolidation, we get into vertical integration, vertical consolidation—and this is where things get interesting. And when I say interesting, I mean it in a “we live in interesting times” kind of way. The vertical consolidation conversation segues into whose swim lane that the digital health and other innovators or, dare I say, disrupters are diving into and whose lunch they are aiming to eat. Dr. Bricker probably needs no introduction. He is the force behind AHealthcareZ, which you can find online, on Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. He has worked as a clinician, in healthcare finance. If that weren't enough, he's also been an entrepreneur—a very successful entrepreneur, I might add. He started one of the first healthcare navigation firms. You can connect with Dr. Bricker on Twitter at @DrEricB and on LinkedIn. Eric Bricker, MD, is an internal medicine physician and former cofounder and chief medical officer of Compass Professional Health Services. Compass is a healthcare navigation service that grew to 2000+ clients, including T-Mobile, Southwest Airlines, and Chili's/Maggiano's restaurants. Compass was acquired by Alight Solutions in July 2018. Alight is a 10,000-person employee benefits and HR outsourcing company that separated from Aon in 2017. Dr. Bricker has since started AHealthcareZ.com, with 300+ healthcare finance videos with approximately 120,000 views per month across all platforms. In 2022, he became medical director of SimplePay Health, an alternative health plan that empowers employees with high-quality care, concierge support, and easily understood payment. He is also the author of Healthcare Money Campfire Stories. 05:50 What is this “megatrend” happening in healthcare right now? 07:11 How has consolidation changed the healthcare landscape? 09:41 What is vertical integration within healthcare? 11:07 Why doesn't inorganic growth benefit patients? 12:52 “What is best for the patient does not necessarily make the most money.” 14:02 “It's not that it's above the law … it is just intentionally obscured.” 18:16 “Healthcare is glacial. It was my distinct pleasure to have Pete Tiliakos, global payroll product strategy leader for Alight Solutions, as my guest for this episode of the #HRTechChat video podcast. Pete's latest role is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg when it comes to his experience, expertise and, really, authority in the domain of payroll. Most recently, Pete was an analyst at two different firms. Before that, he was payroll solution architect at IBM and senior consultant, human capital management, at Deloitte Consulting, in that order. Back in the early aughts, notably, he was payroll leader for shared services at Disney Worldwide. Put differently, to say Pete is an expert in payroll is an understatement. Returning to the present, "It's an exciting time to be in the industry," said Pete, who's also a member of our Global Executive Advisory Council. "It feels like all that experience has really caught a wave." During our chat, we shared takeaways in the wake of this year's triumphant return of the HR Technology Conference & Expo. Triumphant does seem like an appropriate word. Regarding the conference, "To me that was the biggest, boldest, most vibrant, most alive event I've seen in a long time," Pete said. "There's a lot of talk about a recession and a slowdown and things, but what we're seeing is that talent is still very important. And then, of course, we saw payroll well represented." The possibilities around payroll are greater and more progressive today than we even would have fathomed 10 years ago. The train has left the station, so to speak, and our concept of what payroll can and does mean has expanded. "I just think it's great to see all the investment and focus on payroll," Pete said. "COVID really provided that spotlight, where payroll became infinitely more important compared to how it had been treated in the past." It's almost as if business leaders are finally seeing the processing of payroll for what it is: not a mere cost to contain, but an investment, just as their people's pay itself is an investment, too. Pete and I delved deeply into all of this, the transformation of payroll — as evidenced by our conversations out in the wild, at HR Technology Conference — and how payroll professionals can seize the moment to become strategic advisors to their organizations. It's one thing to be highly skilled in work that organizational leadership may view as background noise. It's quite another to become bearers of crucially informative data that can change the C-suite's basic understanding of the workforce. That's when payroll and strategy start to occupy the same sentences. I really enjoyed this discussion with Pete and highly encourage readers to tune into this episode.

We've recently discussed the notion of The Great Regret, and the disappointing experience when you make the serious decision to leave your job for another opportunity, and then the other opportunity, well, doesn't quite live up to your expectations. We are digging into that exact scenario today! We are very excited to welcome James Hughes to the podcast. James is the HCM Deployment Lead for Workday at Alight Solutions, and he joined us to share about his big decision to leave his job to explore something new…and then how he pretty quickly realized it wasn't what he was looking for after all. Key Takeaways: The shine of a big brand can be really alluring! Doing your research is still important. Before making a big move, one thing to assess is whether or not you really have the energy to start something fresh, build all new relationships, learn the new ropes, etc. It's a lot of effort! Life is short. Find happiness if you can. And know that what makes you happy can really shift and change over the course of our career lives.
What does it take to work your way up? What does it take to keep improving yourself? What does it take to consistently grow in life? Some of the (many, many, many) answers to these questions can be found in this episode. My guest today is Udbhav Desai, and he is nothing less than a prime example of what it means to work your way up. He has achieved a lot of success, all at a pretty young age. As he explains in this episode, he is always looking for new things to learn, ways to grow, and methods for achieving the most out of a situation. His drive to not only succeed but overachieve is evident. Udbhav was born in the state of Gujarat India. He moved to Toronto, Canada in second grade, and then New Jersey in sixth grade. He attended Northwestern University, earning a Bachelors and Masters in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Geography, as well as graduating Magna Cum Laude. He then spent 5 years in Madison, Wisconsin working for Epic Systems in numerous analytics-focused roles, from Solution Engineering to managing to Business Intelligence Engineering. Now, he works for Alight Solutions as a Senior Manager of Business Intelligence and Analytics. Alongside his impressive business career, he loves staying actively involved in dance opportunities, seizing guest roles whenever possible. In this episode, Udbhav talks about numerous ways that he achieved and now maintains his success. He discusses how he constantly looked for ways to go above and beyond in college to get the most out of his education. He explains the importance of balancing confidence and humility. He touches on what he calls the work-life swing (and why he calls it that). And he states that instead of waiting your turn for success, you should "make it your turn." That is just scratching the surface of the ideas Udbhav has to offer on this topic. It's clear that Udbhav has reflected deeply on how he achieved his success and the mental state required to continue to grow and improve in life. Today, he shares that knowledge with you! In the first episode of season two of the HR Trends podcast, Clare Morin speaks to Brian Kropp, Chief of Research and Distinguished Vice President at Gartner, and Polly Nicholas, Senior Vice President and Head of Solutions at Unum Group, about the fundamental shifts happening in HR and how business leaders who respond to the holistic needs of their employees will win the talent and retention game. Key takeawaysAs the line between work and home have become blurred, it's caused a reconsideration of the place of work in an employee's life. (7:55)This requires a different approach and a new type of leader. (9:35)This shift can also be seen in what employers and employees want in terms of benefits. (11:40)Supporting employees in this broader, more holistic way is also better for business. “When organizations are more effective at meeting the mental health needs, the family needs, the community needs of their employees,” says Kropp, “Those employees perform at a higher level, are less likely to quit, they are more engaged with their work, they sleep better at night, and the list goes on and on. By improving the lives of our employees, we help the performance of our organizations.” (13:15)Employee leave programs are becoming focused around personas. “Even the leave and time off conversation used to be this big block of people who just needed to take time off. And tomorrow, it's about a persona,” says Nicholas. “And it's how we begin to shift thinking about leave policies and compliance, to what does a person need who's planning a leave? What does a person need when they have a very unplanned event and there's an emergent moment happening? How are those needs different? And how are we surrounding them, and back to Corey Barret's sort of scaffolding, how are we surrounding them because there's this opportunity to offer solutions that do just that.” (28:20) External shocks -- the pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and the war in Ukraine -- have turned ideas about good management on their head. “The focus up to now has been on efficiency, on stripping costs as much as possible,” explains Kropp. “When we have a management strategy that is maximizing efficiency, we also have a strategy that is unwittingly maximizing fragility. It's like inflating a balloon with as much air as possible right up to the point where it breaks. That strategy is fine if there's nothing in the environment that can cause a balloon to break. What we've realized is there's lots of things in the environment that can cause the balloon to break.” (31:00)Featured speakers: Brian Kropp Chief of Research and Distinguished Vice President, GartnerBrian Kropp oversees the lines of business that support Chief Human Resources Officers and their leadership teams. He works with this cadre of leaders to develop strategic plans that will attract and retain top talent. Dr. Kropp has authored more than 40 research studies at Gartner, led more than 200 strategy sessions with executive teams at Fortune 100 companies and more than 300 Executive Education sessions across the globe. In this healthcare podcast, I'm speaking with Eric Bricker, MD, about how so many entities in healthcare are getting up in other people's business and swimming in other people's traditional lanes. Consider last week's show with Katy Talento, for example. She mentions employers who are not only doing their own direct contracting (ie, cutting out the traditional carriers and negotiating directly with provider organizations) but also employee benefit consultants who are working on setting up their own hospital—an employer-owned hospital. That was episode 350, and while this hospital idea is a little future oriented, right now today, across the country, we have employers and also unions who are owning their own primary care clinics, which I discussed at some length with Mark Blum from America's Agenda (EP248). In this episode with Dr. Bricker, we start from the beginning. We get into this in the podcast, but subsequent to this recording, there was a study that came out in JAMA: “The Dysfunctional Health Benefits Market and Implications for US Employers and Employees.” This was by David Scheinker, PhD; Arnold Milstein, MD; and Kevin Schulman, MD. This study showed that commercial insurance costs have gone up 4x the rate of other benchmark goods and services. Bottom line, “It is assumed that insurers compete intensely to improve the value received by employers and employees by negotiating to keep prices down and advocating for employers and employees.” Ha ha … NOT. With peak horizontal consolidation, there is little meaningful competition—so ixnay on that premise. By the way, if anyone knows any of those authors that I just cited in that study, hit me up. I'd love to get one of them on the show. But let's spend a moment, shall we, on the human impact of all this extreme consolidation. The impact is your sister, your neighbor, your son, your friend. So many feel so much pressure financially in our country today because of healthcare costs. Even families earning significantly more than median household income are forgoing care because of costs. Again, this was in a recent paper. Anyway, about nine minutes into the interview with Dr. He has worked as a clinician, in healthcare finance, and currently serves as a chief medical officer. If that weren't enough, he's also been an entrepreneur—a very successful entrepreneur, I might add. He started one of the first healthcare navigation firms called Compass Professional Health Services. Compass had something like 2000 employer clients serving about 1.8 million people when it was purchased in, I believe, 2018. How do you define the value of an HR modernization project at a time when multiple departments are fighting for post-Covid budget?Project managers can fall into the trap of being unrealistic with business cases and not fully taking into account innovation, available resources and budget constraints. Failing to do this heightens the likelihood of project failure, or at least issues with the timeline or smooth running of the project. It's therefore crucial that before all else project viability is proven. Start with the stakeholder who have most influence on your project. These usually control the essential resources and expertise needed for success. Getting their formal buy-in upfront is crucial.Next, depending on the project size, scope and complexity, you must fully understand the operational objectives of each stakeholder. By doing this, you get their support, feedback and identify any potential resistance, ahead of building out and presenting the business plan.In this Alight On episode, our expert team will provide you with powerful tips to help get your business case, and give your HR transformation project, the best chance of long term success.
The average Fortune 500 company combines between 50 and 150 different technology platforms and programs to deliver a range of employee solutions—from benefits, to payroll, to career and talent management, to voluntary benefits. This means employees often are pushed to multiple systems to make decisions, leaving them overwhelmed, confused and frustrated trying to navigate so many different places. This fragmented approach results in a stressed and struggling workforce and impacts organizations' bottom line. HR teams have an opportunity to address these challenges, and help drive business success and deliver value.Listen to our podcast where key leaders from Alight discuss how employers can rethink the array of technology platforms and programs needed to deliver employee solutions and implement technology that engage employees in both work and life and drives better business outcomes.

As we enter a new chapter of the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations are now analyzing what the future state of their workplace will look like. If there is one thing that we have learned, it is that every company and their workforce has had a unique experience with responding to the pandemic.
As digital transformation projects that were stopped or delayed due to the pandemic look to restart, they are competing for limited company resources, changing priorities and uncertain budgets. Companies are faced with returning to some level of normalcy but with new cost-optimization challenges, an increased list of lessons learned from the pandemic, and less budget to get it all done. With a renewed appreciation for how quickly the world can change, companies no longer have the luxury of time and money to get their transformations done, they are faced with prioritization challenges and resource constraints and are increasingly looking for a way to mitigate the project risks.Join us for this episode to learn how you can transform your HR/Payroll service to an enhanced, agile, and more future-proof service experience using an accelerated approach that reduces risk and guarantees cost savings.
Leaders understand strategy and data-driven decision-making, yet many struggle to operationalize insights across the entire enterprise — particularly when it comes to applying the same rigor around people decisions as they do to other financial considerations. Unfortunately, without an in-depth understanding of, and visibility into, employee experience, organizations risk long-term repercussions, including poor morale, a tarnished brand reputation, and revenue loss.Listen to this month’s episode to learn how you can better use your own data to increase employee engagement, while simultaneously improving business outcomes.
2020 brought its fair share of challenges to the workforce. A smooth start to the new year requires a well thought out planning strategy to close out 2020. Companies that have invested in cloud technology enjoy many advantages over their competitors around year-end planning that allow them to predict their budgetary and workforce needs more accurately, minimize costly human errors and stay on top of their data throughout the year to cut down on the amount of work that must be done now. Our panelists discuss how their HR, finance and payroll teams have been positively impacted around year-end prep with Alight’s move to cloud technology and what you and your company can expect to see as you make the decision to modernize your business.

Back in 2015, Katie Rooney was only 7 months into her first industry CFO role at Aon when her boss asked her to exit the office. “He came into my office on November 1 and said, ‘I’m retiring, and I want you to take on my role. I’m leaving in 8 weeks,’” recalls Rooney, who says that the news triggered a mix of surprise and fear, which she recalls outwardly expressing with the words “Oh, my God!” Her boss quickly sought to ease her concerns. “He said: ‘You know what? It will be the best thing for you. If I stick around, you will never get the credit from the team,” explains Rooney, who subsequently swapped her CFO business unit responsibilities for her boss’s broader, divisional-level CFO portfolio. Looking back, Rooney confides that she expected to someday to fill her boss’s shoes, but perhaps in 2017 or 2018—and certainly not in 2015. For her, though, the timing would turn out to be most fortuitous. In early 2017, 13 months after she had officially taken on her boss’s role, Aon announced plans to sell its employee benefits outsourcing business to private equity firm Blackstone Group as part of a “carve out” strategy that eventually rebranded the stand-alone business as Alight Solutions. “We called ourselves a $2.3 billion startup,” remembers Rooney, who says that she now realizes how her boss’s decision to step aside in late 2015 ensured her inclusion in the early round of discussions that ultimately led to a deal with Blackstone and her subsequent appointment as CFO of Alight Solutions. “We kind of had this moment when we said, ‘The capital structure and some of the margin components just don’t fit with the larger business,’ so we started thinking about carving the business out,” responds Rooney, when asked to recall the moment of insight that may have helped to hatch Alight Solutions. –Jack Sweeney Rooney: As I think about the next 12 months, we have to execute on the strategy we've now brought together. We are at this incredible place in time where our business is uniquely positioned to help solve the needs of our clients and their employees. We can help drive down the total cost of the workforce. We can try to drive and improve health outcomes. And as we think about the financial stresses created by the pandemic, thinking about overall financial wellbeing, there's so much opportunity here, and we've pulled the strategy together, and as I mentioned, I think we've built the right KPIs around it. We're now working on building out a detailed operating plan that will hold us accountable day over day around executing against this, because its about driving more value. We're taking an outcome based approach. We're leading with technology and really looking at everything, but we now have to hold ourselves accountable day over day to execute against that. And I think finance plays an incredibly important role there as we think about how we develop the operating plan to get all of our leaders, all of our businesses, aligned around what's required to drive that forward. So that's really where we're focused here over the next couple of months.
As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to be felt and uncertainties on Wall Street and in the workplace remain, financial health is now more top of mind than ever for U.S. workers. These challenges present employers with a prime opportunity to provide their people much needed support to help improve their financial wellbeing.Traditionally, when we think about financial wellness and employer-sponsored initiatives, the focus is often on saving for retirement. In recent years, as the makeup of the workforce has shifted and workers continue to have more diverse savings needs, the traditional definition of financial health has grown to encompass the entire savings journey up to and including retirement.
Real-time data analytic capabilities are now a non-negotiable application feature in today’s technology landscape. Find out how the Cloud gives organizations an advantage when growing their analytics strategy and how this is key to delivering on promises to your stakeholders, including reduced cost, process improvements and actionable data driven insights.

The necessity of a remote workforce showed organizations the range of virtual employment possibilities and many have opted to keep these flexible working policies in place. Ensure your organizational platform can support business continuity within your workforce as operations continue outside of the office.
The global pandemic has heightened uncertainty for employers and their people in all aspects of their lives, but one thing is certain – mitigating risk is imperative as employers prepare for annual enrollment. As the unemployment rate increases, how do organizations minimize eligibility risks to their benefit plans and address healthcare cost backlogs from COVID-19?Join us for this latest episode to learn:Employer compliance trends in the era of COVID-19How to minimize healthcare cost risks for the 2021 plan yearValuable business outcomes beyond compliance
To deliver on your business goals, you must look at innovating more than just your technology. We'll discuss the importance of transforming your operating model and the optimal mix of in-house and external support.
As HR and business leaders begin to evaluate how and when to start bringing their people back to physical workspaces, employee wellbeing has never been more top of mind. But regardless of whether your people are headed back to the workplace or will continue to work remote for the foreseeable future, the importance of maintaining a happy, healthy and productive workforce remains a constant. Employees are looking to their employers to help support their holistic wellbeing now more than ever before, and organizations need to be ready to adapt their strategy to meet those needs.
Deploying new solutions usually requires sufficient planning to integrate the technology into current operations. Throw a global pandemic into the mix, and suddenly that planning has to shift to accommodate new remote conditions. On the Workday Podcast, Scott Palzkill, vice president of IT at Alight Solutions, shares his best practices and lessons learned from undergoing a virtual deployment.

In this episode, we will provide insights on why establishing your cloud transformation strategy is important and how a solid foundation is formed when you have the right tools and model to support your workforce.
The first wave of this COVID-19 pandemic has been totally reactionary. Don’t get me wrong: That does not detract from the Herculean effort made by hospitals and clinicians who have thrown everything they have at this—and more. But I don’t think that anyone would disagree that if we had enough PPE (personal protective equipment) and ventilators—you know, like, proactively—we’d be in better shape. So let’s stay ahead of the second wave of this pandemic, which is going to happen when, as Marty Makary put it in episode 267, the backlog of patients who were scared to or unable to get care for a few months creep out of their homes. What happens when patients who should have gotten a tumor removed or had a colonoscopy because of GI bleeding or felt the symptoms of a heart attack but did not get timely care? In this health care podcast, I am speaking with Eric Bricker, MD, from AHealthcareZ; and we’re talking about how the post-COVID-19 new normal may shape up. One way to conceive of what health care will be moving forward is to look at how stakeholders are impacted by the pandemic right now and what action steps they’re taking right now, because to a nontrivial degree, the moves made now will have an outsized impact on their success trajectory in the near term and long term in the months and years to come. I was super thrilled to have the chance to speak with Dr. Bricker. If you haven’t watched his videos on LinkedIn or at AHealthcareZ.com, you should definitely go and check them out.
