In this episode, Matthew Pieknik and Christopher Russell speak with Gohar Homayounpour about her book Persian Blues, Psychoanalysis and Mourning (Routledge, 2023) Psychoanalysis is, Homayounpour tells us early in the interview, “a profession for dreamers, for people who don't know what to do with themselves. for freaks. This is not a profession for people in suits at universities who have a clear idea of the status quo. It's the absolute opposite. It's the carnival, you know, it's still unofficial, it's the subversive because that's the discourse of the unconscious. But this is a dangerous business, you know, and it should be for both analytic subjects in the room. I'm in favor of absence. I'm in favor of disturbance. I'm in favor of pollution and darkness. I think these are things that need to be celebrated.” In Persian Blues, Psychoanalysis and Mourning, Gohar Homayounpour plays a theme and variations on loss, love, and family against the backdrop of Iran's chaotic recent past. Homayounpour is simultaneously Shahrzad, the fearless storyteller, and Shahrzad's analyst: subjecting fairy tales to fierce new insights, while weaving an indigo thread through her own devastation on the death of her father and the wonders and horrors of motherhood. A blue thread, or melody, runs though the separations and emigrations of her family and patients driven or broken apart by war, and likewise through the fraught world inhabited by Persian women. This book breaks new psychoanalytic ground, offering a radical rejection of traditional clichés about Iran, and Iranian women, but its unsparing elegance transcends any political agenda, bridging the ocean of a shared and tragic humanity. Persian Blues, Psychoanalysis and Mourning will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytically informed readers, as well as those interested in grief, Iran, and women's experiences. Artist Shahrzad Ghaffari replies to orientalism in the Arts & Crafts Movement, William De Morgan's Arab Hall, and the new contemporary architecture of Leighton House in London, in her Persian poetry-inspired mural paintings. Since reopening in 2022, Leighton House has commissioned contemporary, often SWANA-based artists, to respond to its interiors and collection - particularly, the vivid ceramic tiles collected from Turkey and Greece, Egypt and Syria, which shroud its 18th century Arab Hall. Iranian-born, Canada-based Shahrzad Ghaffari was the first invited to contribute to the museum's redesign. A new exhibition, Journey to Oneness, follows her process to construct the helical staircase which now sits at the House's core – a ‘totem of union', connecting East and West, the historic and the contemporary. The artist details how Islamic patterns and Persian poetry permeates her practice, interests shared with the House's creator, Lord Leighton. Shahrzad describes her movement back to abstract, calligraphic painting after studying graphic design, and why making public art is a physical, constructive act. Plus, she details Iran's contemporary political landscape which informs Lion and Sun (2010), painted in response to the women-led protests which followed the shooting of Neda Agha-Soltan - and its continued resonance amidst global attention on the death of Mahsa Amini. Shahrzad Ghaffari: Journey to Oneness runs at Leighton House in London until 1 October 2023. Leighton House is a finalist for the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2023. “Culture is a living organism that we have to tend to and grow every day,” explains Dr. Shahrzad Nooravi, PsyD. Dr. Nooravi is both the author of Strategy Meets Performance and a business psychoanalyst who works with company leadership to create engaging workplace cultures. Today, she discusses her methods for helping leaders develop authentic and inviting workplaces. Much of leading with authenticity begins with self-awareness and personal accountability. A powerful culture starts with a lot of inner work on behalf of the company leaders. It's not enough to just talk a big game, you have to be able to walk the talk. When the employees can see their leaders modeling the values expressed in the company handbook, they feel more confident. Additionally, they will feel more valued when you can put aside your ego and be more receptive to feedback, even if it is negative. When employees feel like their voices are actually being heard by leadership, they are more likely to want to stay.  With leadership strategy, it comes down to really committing to authenticity. Starting a job is a top 10 life stressor, so anything you can do to create a healthy and engaging workplace culture will go a long way with your team. Remember to speak up for your beliefs even in uncomfortable situations and to always listen more than you talk. Quotes: “It's having the courage to speak up and share our voice and share our agency, not just when we're in a room full of people who we know very well and we trust really well, but also in scenarios where it may not be as comfortable.” (4:25-4:43 | Dr. Nooravi) “When it comes to having the courage to speak up, we have to remember that every time we do, we are planting a seed. And that seed could be what helps an idea or someone else speaking up bloom later.” (4:57-5:12 | Dr. Nooravi) “A powerful culture starts with you, that inner work leads to that outer success.” (8:45-8:51 | Dr. Nooravi)  “We need to be rooted and growing. Rooted in our experiences and our wisdom and what brought us to this point and still continue to be growing. And culture is a living organism that we have to tend to and grow every day.” (24:16-24:34 | Dr. Nooravi) “One attribute of authenticity is deep listening and listening to understand, not listening so that you could speak and give a response.” (25:29-25:41 | Dr. Nooravi) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity   Learn more about Dr. Shahrzad Nooravi:  shahrzad@strategymeetsperformance.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/shahrzadnooravi/  instagram.com/dr.shahrzadnooravi/ https://apowerfulculture.com/ Buy a copy of Dr. Shahrzad Nooravi's book: strategymeetsperformance.com,      Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Delivery of surgical services in low-resource settings is extremely difficult. Supply chain issues, funding, shortages of supplies, and even lack of healthcare professionals are each enormous hurdles in and of themselves. What about when civil conflict arises and a war begins? Increases in different types of injuries start to plague the already fragile system. How does one get life-saving supplies via the already scarce supply chain when roads have been taken out by bombs or blocked by military personnel? Doctors, nurses, and support staff, all risking their lives each day just to show up and provide care. Join us with guest host Ala Magzoub as we talk with Dr. Shahrzad Joharifard about her work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during civil conflict and the unique challenges inherent to surgical delivery in this space. In this episode, Sarah Tenisi speaks with Dr. Shahrzad Nooravi, author of A Powerful Culture Starts With You. She is an organizational psychologist and Master Certified Coach (MCC) who helps organizations cultivate thriving workplaces from the inside-out.Dr. Nooravi is the Founder and CEO of Strategy Meets Performance, a business consulting firm that partners with leaders of mid-sized to Fortune 500 organizations to help them create engaging, innovative, and productive cultures.Listen in as Dr. Nooravi discusses the mindset required to be an engaging leader that employees can't help but be loyal to and never want to leave! She explains why, in the new normal, it's so important for leaders to determine the right balance between in-person and virtual meetings in the workplace, because the truth we all have to contend with is that workplace culture has totally transformed over the past two years.Dr. Nooravi breaks down her three-part model on cultivating a great company culture, as detailed in her book. Those three parts, each an acronym, are:WATCH IT: How do you look at your culture to determine what's going on? DRIVE IT: How do you create a coaching culture? WALK IT: How do you create a culture where the senior team is aligned? Finally, Dr. Nooravi gives an inspiring example of the three-part model in action and how your leadership team can begin to implement these principles into your organization today! What You'll Learn in This Episode:●      [01:36] How to be an engaging leader, and why it's vital today●      [04:30] Why employers need to find the right balance of in-person/virtual●      [06:08] Switching focus from recruitment to retention●      [08:14] Winning loyalty from your team●      [11:54] Defining “organizational psychology”●      [15:22] Signs that your company culture is not working●      [19:45] The three part-model on cultivating a great culture●      [23:41] What DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) should really mean for creating a culture●      [28:00] How not to be a work-addicted organization●      [33:17] How to create an aligned, coaching culture●      [39:01] The limitations of the desire to constantly innovate●      [41:16] An example of what can happen to an organization when the three-part model is put into practice●      [45:49] How to start implementing the three-part model todayKey quotes:●      “When workers have a skillset that is in-demand, they will want, at minimum, a hybrid setup; but a lot of them are looking for these virtual jobs. Unless employers get to the point where they figure out, for the right jobs, how to make that possible, it will be more difficult to bring on talented employees and to keep them.”●      “It's so important to create a culture where people share their voice. That is their agency. We cannot change a behavior, a culture, or a system without speaking up.”●      “A culture is a living organism. You are tending to it like you do with any relationship that you have.”

This week we're talking about two of London's most magnificent Victorian houses, Leighton House and Sambourne House in Holland Park. Leighton House, studio-home of the eminent Victorian artist Frederic Lord Leighton, has just reopened after an £8 million redevelopment along with nearby Sambourne House, the family home of Punch cartoonist Edward Linley Sambourne. We talk to Daniel Robbins, Senior Curator of both houses and to the Iranian artist Shahrzad Gaffari, who's hand-painted an 11-foot high textured mural around the curved wall of Leighton House's brand new helical staircase. Shahrzad tells us that her mural is inspired by the 13th Century poet Rumi and, with its bright turquoise motifs which echo the tiles in the Arab Hall, the work represents the present and future of the house, continuing to deepen our knowledge of and understanding of eastern culture. A new exhibition space in Leighton House is now showcasing the work of the Holland Park Circle of artists, to which Lord Leighton belonged, while the new basement has a display of Leighton's exquisite drawings – there are 700 belonging to the house. You can see Leighton's studio exactly as it would have been, as well as the Arab Hall and the other public areas, full of mosaics, tiles, pottery and artefacts which he brought back from his travels in Egypt, Turkey and Syria. Walking into Sambourne House is to be fully immersed in a Victorian family home while Leighton House is now a lively destination and gathering point with a new café overlooking the garden. Both are well worth a visit so listen in to hear about what's in store at both of these great historic homes.
