BIKE SHORTS Episode 7: With the arrival of their first daughter in 1984, Peter had the carrot he needed to finally trade his nicotine addiction for an O2 addiction. He had always enjoyed riding bikes in his younger years, and with his newfound obsession for riding, he was ready to take it to another level. This episode recounts his first 200 mile ride when he rode the 17th AnnualDavis Double Century in 1986. He even has the t-shirt to prove it!--WHAT IS BIKE SHORTS? I often chat with fellow cyclists that say they don't have enough bike-related stories to fill a full episode, so the idea of BIKE SHORTS was born! S5/E5: Patrick Conlon is a big fan of riding bikes (as you'd expect from a podcast guest!) — but he's perhaps an even bigger fan of YOU riding bikes. Having spent several decades now advocating for everything from safer bike lanes and better accessibility with organizations like Bike BS and Bike JC, to organizing fun group rides and working as Trail Manager for the Eastern Trail, we had a really fun and informative conversation. Not to mention some great stories about his first bike given to him by his Grandfather (he still has the frame!), transporting his drum kit on a bike while living in New Jersey, and just taking in the world around him from two wheels. -- Included in the "Best 40 Cycling Podcasts" on Feedspot: https://blog.feedspot.com/cycling_podcasts/ Follow on INSTAGRAM Follow on FACEBOOK Visit iRIDEaBIKE.com -- A Production of I RIDE, LLC Theme Song by Spencer Albee. S5/E4: Growing up in Rhode Island, a young Ainsley Judge began riding bikes along side her family — often on fun road trips and camping excursions. But it was when she went to school in Minneapolis-Saint Paul that her true love of cycling took hold. She shares stories from one particularly memorable ride when she and a close group of friends rode around all 5 Great Lakes — finding some hilarious experiences, painful lessons, and an all-out shared love of adventure on two wheels. When we recorded this episode in April 2024, Ainsley was the Director of the Portland Gear Hub. She has now begun graduate studies in urban planning at Tufts University, but remains active and a large supporter of this great organization. I RIDE A BIKE — THE PODCAST

S5/E3: Growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Bob Brown started (as many do) riding hand-me-down bikes in the neighborhood surrounding his home. But as he grew — along with his abilities, confidence, and passion for adventure — it was apparent he was in for a life-long pursuit of discovery on two wheels. He shares some stories of overnight excursions, then week-long rides, and eventually year-long adventures chasing an endless summer. And along with his passion for riding, Bob also found that giving back to his community through bike-related volunteer work would be equally as fulfilling — most recently with organizations like The Portland Gear Hub. Season 4 / Episode 10: I met Tim Bruce while having post-race beers after Rasputitsa in East Burke, VT in April 2023. We were all chatting about the day and sharing our experiences, and then Tim started to share some bike stories from years past. I had him hit pause and asked if he'd like to share them on the mic (which didn't take much convincing) so we reconnected a couple months later to record this episode. There are the standard memories from first bikes and that excitement from the early years, and a great recounting of his recent ride at the Unbound Gravel in Kansas. But what really makes this episode special is the story he shares about one particular year at the Leadville 100, and riding with his dad in an attempt to finally get him his sub-12hr buckle and become an "official finisher" after many years attempting this monumental feat. Disney's resort hotels ARE VERY EXPENSIVE, THEY ARE ALSO VERY FUN — from the AMAZING lobbies and CLEAN hotel rooms, to resort activities, restaurants and gift shops. Resort hopping is MY FAVORITE THING TO DO IN Disney World. I ridE the monorail and/or Skyliner to each resorts to AND EXPLORE AND RELAX. If you're staying at a Disney World resort hotel and WANT to check out other resorts on Disney World property, THERE IS BAD NEWS. Many Disney World hotels are undergoing construction right now. WHICH MEANS YOU WILL RUN INTO SOME CONSTRUCTION AREAS OF THE RESORT THAT CAN'T BE ACCESSED CURRENTLY. Disney's Grand Floridian Resort  IS UNDERCOVER CONSTRUCTION RIGHT NOW. I THINK THE GRAND FLORIDIAN IS A BEAUTIFUL RESORT. THE LOBBY FEELS LIKE THE WHITE HOUSE TURNED INTO A HOTEL. I THINK IT NEEDS SOME UPDATES AND A LITTLE COLOR IN THE LOBBY, EVERYTHING IS WHITE EVERYWHERE. this resort always seemed out of place amongst the other resorts. You'll can hear the construction during the day, you can still explore the majority of the resort. The construction is set to continue until fall 2023 my favorite resort the Polynesian, has construction going on for the new Disney Vacation Club villas . it's also construction on new rooms, and even new restaurants. at the BoardWalk resort. The Cake Bake Shop is under construction and is set to open later this year. also the lobbies, lounge, and guest rooms are being refurbished and renovated. the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Kidani Village is being remodeled until late September, 2023. if you are staying there be prepared to here noise. the rest of the resort is free of construction. so if your resort hopping you can still explore the lobby and public areas. Disney's Beach Club Resort, guest rooms are being refurbishment and are under construction until late in 2023 at Fort Wilderness, Trails End Restaurant is closed for refurbishmen opens back sometime this summer. Port Orleans — French Quarter, Doubloon Lagoon Pool will be closed until April 2024 for construction..........if you are going to resort hop, you should be ok for the most part. if your staying at the resorts then that might be an issue. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/c-sincere/support

I RIDE A BIKE — THE PODCAST

Season 4 / Episode 9: With Tira Denny's race season in full swing (and an energetic toddler at home), I was so appreciative that she shared a bit of her valuable down time to chat bike stories on the mic. We start with an early memory, where a long bike ride and a bit of bribery turned into a brand new bike thanks to her dad. Then we travel across the Atlantic to a time when an ambitious London adventure turned into a less-than-exciting UberX ride. And I particularly enjoyed hearing how endurance racing began with a rather simple goal of self-fulfillment through competition, and how her partner Mike and their daughter Zoey have now honed her focus and determination to the level of a champion. BIKE SHORTS Episode 4: Last October (‘22) I sat down with my good friend and adventure buddy Eric Brackett to record this episode of Bike Shorts. He said he had a story he'd been holding on to, and wanted to get my honest reaction while we were on the mic. And this one certainly didn't disappoint! Without giving it all away, it's a stolen bike story that doesn't go exactly as you might expect when a man known as Wolf enters the picture. Sadly, in January of 2023, Nicholas “Wolf” Gardner's life was cut tragically short. After learning of this, I wanted to give some time before releasing this episode. I also took some time to read about Wolf through words written by his family. It's yet another reminder that we never know the true story behind those we may have a chance encounter with. So please listen to the episode, then read his obituary and some of the notes people left. There's also a video at the bottom to see his life in pictures. -- WHAT IS BIKE SHORTS? I often chat with fellow cyclists that say they don't have enough bike-related stories to fill a full episode, so the idea of BIKE SHORTS was born! SEASON 4 / EPISODE 8: When looking back at his childhood, Michael's single greatest Christmas was when we walked into the living room to find a beautiful gold and silver bike from Montgomery Ward leaning against the wall. And he's been hooked ever since. As he grew, so did his style of riding and the types of bikes that where associated — from BMX with giant back-yard jumps to a Schwinn Varsity that he took for a 100-mile ride when he was only 12 while listening to 38 Special on repeat. Later in his teens he found inspiration watching the Tour de France on The Wide World of Sports and still has a special fondness for John Tesh which he's more than happy to admit. These days you can find him riding with his sons or helping kids find the joy of MTB racing through the Southern Maine Mountain Bike Syndicate, which he helped to start. He quickly started entering some local races, and by the time he was in his early teens, he was already winning championships up against kids several years older. In addition to the races, there were healthy doses of your standard backyard BMX shenanigans, riding miles and miles to buy a Coke, and just the pure joy of summer adventures. After an arduous beginning, Mardi and 9 international siblings were adopted by a family on the coast of Maine, where cycling really began to take hold. She recounts first memories of riding bikes around the Bar Harbor area, but it's when she moved to Portland that she really got her first taste of the freedom and independence a bike would allow. Now she rides as often as possible; always learning, looking, listening and most importantly — finding adventure and treasure wherever she goes. Originally from the booming metropolis of Bangor, Maine, Garrett recounted his early years on two wheels — from the time he accidentally invented the removable handlebar for a particularly memorable jump, to bombing around the aptly-named "no man's land" behind the old junkyard. And though he rode quite a bit growing up, it was while on a job assignment in Utah that the undeniable love of mountain biking really took hold. Due to some unexpected trials and tribulations, Dave took a very long hiatus from riding a bike — nearly 17 years. And during that time, he found himself on a very unhealthy path. Reaching over 300 lbs, full of aches and pains, he knew he needed to make a change for the better. And that's where the bike re-entered his life, along with a much healthier relationship with mind, body, and spirit. Dave recounts the process he went through to feel healthy again, and the associated attitude shift that allows him to share his genuine smile and undeniable love for two wheels again. And when Nelson isn't finding himself in that zone — whether riding bikes, skating or snowboarding — he can be found crushing it in the action sports industry as a member of the Vans sales leadership team, or behind the mic announcing events like the Bejing Winter Olympics, X Games, or Burton US Open. BIKE SHORTS Episode 2: In this episode, we get a 2-for-1 with adventure dad Frank Hwang and his rad daughter Callen. We'd been trying to connect for the better part of 2022, and on a beautiful day in late September it finally worked out. Sitting in their garage, surrounded by all the fun “toys” of a family that loves the outdoors, we start with Frank on the mic where he shares two short stories, both involving the pain and hilarity that surrounds an arduous hill climb. Next up, 13 year old Callen Hwang shares her unique perspective and memories of first bikes, the amazing fun that a full-suspension can bring, and that even a nasty crash will only slow her down momentarily. WHAT IS BIKE SHORTS? I often chat with fellow cyclists that say they don't have enough bike-related stories to fill a full episode, so the idea of BIKE SHORTS was born! Still a bit rough around the edges, I hope you find it interesting and follow along as I work through the process. SEASON 3 / EPISODE 7: Professional endurance mountain biker and mental health advocate Kelly Catale has always had a competitive streak — from her earliest biking memory of trying to out-do her twin sister when first learning to ride, to Marathon Mountain Bike World Circuit as a rider for Team USA. And if there's one thing I quickly learned during our conversation, it's that Kelly Catale only knows one way to do things: WITH BOTH FEET, ALL IN! There have been a multitude of triumphs, some memorable type 2 fun, and some much-needed type 1 fun. But having spent 30+ years dedicated to finding glory at the finish line, it hasn't always been easy. Opening up about her own mental health, she also shares with us a voice that a lot of people feel, but can be too shy or embarrassed to vocalize. It was wonderful to spend time with such a determined and caring human. You can read more on Kelly's blog, where she recommends you simply “Start the conversation.” -- Included in the "Best 40 Cycling Podcasts" on Feedspot: https://blog.feedspot.com/cycling_podcasts/ Follow on INSTAGRAM Follow on FACEBOOK Visit iRIDEaBIKE.com -- A Production of I RIDE, LLC Theme Song by Spencer Albee. SEASON 3 / EPISODE 6: Musician Jenner Fox is an amazing singer songwriter, but the fact that he does many of his tours by bike (thanks in large part to Xtracycle), this was one of my most anticipated conversations for the podcast. Thanks to a friend who alerted me to his northeast tour, I was able to catch him and his bandmate Jeremy at Blue in Portland, Maine before sitting down for the fun and meandering conversation. We chatted about the earlier years of learning to ride in a church parking lot, a hilarious story of a family mountain bike trip that quickly went awry, and how the contemplative aspect of riding a bike became a large part of his songwriting process. Of all the stories, I particularly liked the ones involving human kindness on his travels — with one that had happened just the day before when they met Bruces from Bruce's Burritos in Yarmouth, Maine during the heaviest rainstorm they had yet to encounter on their tour. And we finished the show with a performance of his bike inspired song “Tongue Canyon Road” before they jumped on their bikes and headed on to their next performance. SEASON 3 / EPISODE 4: L.L. Bean CEO Steve Smith is a busy guy, but he always makes time for family, friends and outdoor adventures. And while spending a sunny morning on Cousins Island together, we were able to incorporate all three into a fun episode of the podcast. He recounted his early love for being a gear junky, using his paper route money to buy, and then continually upgrade his childhood dream bike — an early ‘80s Mongoose BMX. There were of course the crash stories — one resulting in two broken thumbs (definitely a dad joke in there somewhere), hair-raising encounters with various deadly wildlife in Florida, being humbled on the Mount Washington Auto Road Hillclimb by a rider with a handlebar basket and white tennis outfit, and his many riding [mis]adventures while living abroad. We could've easily talked for hours about all sorts of things, but we did our best to stay on topic. From his early years growing up in Northern California, to taking his creative passion for film across the county and starting a life in New York City, and how the experience of getting hit by a bus while riding a bike was ultimately the fuel for founding the BFF. SEASON 3 / EPISODE 2: THAT'S RIGHT! It's DAVE, … from before! I met up with comedian Mr Dave Hill on the mean streets of the West Village, where he clearly ruled all that we could see. But it was noisy so we retreated to his deck, along with his suspiciously friendly hellhound Lucy, to chat about bikes and stuff. He's the first to admit that he may not know a lot about bikes, but it's clear to anyone that's seen him ride, he is certainly the best at bikes. So we talked about some of his sweet tricks, surviving the pandemic, his lifetime ban from Twitter, and ripping sweet solos on his guitar — all while doing his best to name drop celebrities he may or may not know. In all seriousness though, it was a super fun 2 hrs with one of the nicest guys to ever rule the masses. But that Lucy though… pure evil. This pilot episode was recorded as a test at NEMBAfest 2022, and overall, I'm happy with the direction! Initially I was going to release each interview as a single episode, but decided for this first one, I'd just drop them into one chronological mashup as it happened on August 6, 2022. I hope you find it interesting and follow along as I work through the process. During one of the hottest days of the summer, I was able to grab 7 different people — each with their own background, voice and take on what it is to ride a bike. Listen in as I chat with John Aldrich who shares a story about the 6th time he was hit by a car, Melinda Martens talks about getting the biking bug after trying her brothers BMX when she was 7, and Lindsay Currier shares her full-circle story about starting mountain biking in Maine, her path to riding out west and how 20 years later she's stoked to call Maine her home again. I then sat with Emily Elswick who at 28yrs old learned to ride a bike for the first time and now can't imagine a life without riding, Peter Graves who's known throughout the cycling world for his work as an announcer at 13 Olympic Games, Justin Nardella reminisces about getting into riding mountain bikes as a kid on a golf course, and finally Josh Brown shares some stoke on coming to Maine for the first time and how lucky he feels to be working with Transition. Our mutual friend Beau Lambert introduced us and from the moment we sat down it was obvious why these two have been friends for so many years. Stories on stories on stories, we sat at the dining room table and discussed the early days of getting the racing bug as part of the neighborhood riding crew, how serendipity after a blown tube can lead to a lifetime career of helping design the worlds best tires, and that keeping your mind and eyes open is the best way to get from here to there, no matter the path ahead. And the chalkboard behind him certainly speaks to this truth. Now I just need to get Ken and Beau together and see who taps out first on the storytelling. But first we start with his first memories of thrashing around on a Big Wheel and then follow along through the early years as he and his bike crew Justin and Jason upgraded their rides and adventured around Cape Neddick, Maine. We hear about finding the [apparently] ubiquitous “woods porn stash”, buying his own bike at LL Bean with lawn-mowing money, taking a bike on tour (much to the chagrin of his bandmates), and appreciating the health benefits of riding a bike as we get older. And of course I forgot to take photos in March, so we reconnected in June for the necessary selfie on a much nicer day — not to mention I was able to meet his new furry family member. SEASON 2 / EPISODE 10: It was nearly 6 months in the making, but in late April I was finally able to connect with Bruce Papps. At 84 years young, he rides his bike every day and had already clocked over 600 miles in 2022. As he says “if it's not on Strava, it didn't happen.” But first, let's back up a second. Last fall Bruce was featured on WMUR TV for a segment called “Why a Laconia veteran bikes 23 miles a day at 83 years old.” His daughter Debbie sent me the link and said that maybe he'd be a good guest for the podcast. I was thrilled at the idea but out of precaution we waited out the winter. Finally the day arrived and I took the beautiful 2 hour drive from Scarborough to Laconia NH, where I was greeted by Debbie, Bruce and his darling wife Joyce. We all sat in the living room as I hit record and we dove into the stories of a life on bikes — from his first bright red bike that he bought by raking blueberries for an entire summer, to his 35 years of commuting to work on a bike, to his secrets for a long, healthy and happy life. Afterward, as I was packing up, I was invited to stay for lunch. How could I refuse a roast beef sandwich, chips, pickles and a root beer on crushed ice?! And topped off with a bowl of Jordan's ice cream. At this point I jokingly said I may just need to take a nap on the couch, full-well meaning I simply was having such a delightful time I didn't want to leave. But alas it was time for Bruce to go for a ride, so we said goodbye for now. With a ziplock bag of homemade cookies in hand, I smiled the entire way home and I'm already looking forward to us connecting on bikes this summer. -- Included in the "Best 40 Cycling Podcasts" on Feedspot: https://blog.feedspot.com/cycling_podcasts/ Follow on INSTAGRAM Visit iRIDEaBIKE.com -- A Production of I RIDE, LLC Theme Song by Spencer Albee. Plus you live near the Cheese Iron and now I can shop for Mothers Day.” So it was a win win for us both, except now I need some cheese. I RIDE A BIKE — THE PODCAST

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 6: Was so great to meet Zach and spend some time chatting bike stories on a cold Friday in February. We talked about the benefit of bike “junkyards”, the joy of growing up surrounded by family, and taking on adventures that can push our limits only to find we CAN do it. I particularly liked the story about a 120 mile round-trip ride to hike and ski Mt Washington. And yes, he carried all his gear too. Even Louie enjoyed the conversation from the chair. SEASON 2 / EPISODE 4: With so many great things happening in the biking world at Sugarloaf (@sugarloafmountain), it was natural to have another guest with solid mountain bike connections to the area. I met up with Nick Karahalios (who runs @vintage_sugarloaf) late in the afternoon and he was kind enough to bring along some refreshing beverages from Moat Mountain (@moatmtnbrewco) to keep us hydrated while we chatted bikes. He reminisced about his first rides as a kid in Southern Maine, mowing lawns to get his first Gary Fisher in 1998 from Bob Ash, an eventful Superman through the back of a pickup truck (he was fine, the truck was not), and his love of racing single speeds. SEASON 2 / EPISODE 2: It was one of the coldest days of the winter when Steve “DOOM” Fassbinder and I connected at 7am in the basement of a friends house in Portland, Maine to chat bikes. He and his partner where visiting from Colorado, and thankfully for me, a mutual acquaintance introduced us just before they headed back west. Technically the first recording of the new season, we sat on boxes and drank coffee as I did my best to remember how to podcast. We chatted about his first of many hike-a-bike adventures as a kid, solo adventures in the Himalayas, discovering his passion of bikerafting and ultimately launching Four Corners Guides to share it with like-minded adventurers. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos, but otherwise it was such a fun session hearing stories of his amazing travels. Allí encontramos, entre otros, a su hijo Jamie, Todd Snider, Sam Bush, John Carter Cash, The Travelin' McCourys, Jerry Douglas, The Band Of Heathens, Norman Blake o The Infamous Stringdusters. Escuchar audio

This video was recorded using a little Canon Powershot A3500 IS. Editing software: VideoPad Video Editor (freeware). It is not intended to be a work of art, only to express and show some of my experiences, knowledge, feelings and emotions. I am not a filmmaker, writer, poet, travel consultant, or journalist, neither am I a professional rider. I have had the good fortune, mixed with hopefully some wisdom, that in over 35 years of riding, and over 250.000 km of winding road, I am accident free, riding with full conscious, that this can be put to an end within a split fraction of a second. I ride to commute on daily basis, and I ride for shear pleasure, not to race! I Tour because I Love to ride, and I Ride because I love to travel This travel project, with a little adaptation for Discover More 2015, has been a lifelong dream and one I hope to realize for my 50th birthday, with a lot of luck, who knows I will do it on my 49th birthday, with the help of Harley Davidson – Discover More 2015. My wife Dina, was and is an essential part of this project To all who share this dream, and passion. Reach your destination, wherever it may be.
