After years of riding rough stock with multiple injuries, Caden decided to hang it up and pursue his true passion, music. If you're a frequent listener to this show you know I'm a huge fan of great songwriting.  And today's guest on the show is what I would consider a “songwriter's songwriter”.  A person whose songs make other songwriter's say to themselves, “Damn, I wish I'd written that one…”  I'm talking about a guy name Zane Williams. Along with having a reputation as a great songwriter, Zane Williams is great singer and is now fronting the stellar band The Wilder Blue.  If you haven't heard The Wilder Blue or seen them live, you are missing out on a group that is tremendously talented.  Anytime other artists and bands are seen wearing your merch, you know they are making some waves in the scene.  Country superstar Luke Combs just recently made an Instagram post in which he was wearing a Wilder Blue T-shirt if that tells you anything. As a songwriter Zane has had some commercial success in the Country Music Industry.  One of Zane's songs became a top 20 radio single for mainstream country artist Jason Michael Carrol and he's had other songs recorded by well-known Texas Artists like Pat Green and Cody Johnson. Hoy empezamos el tiempo de TOMA UNO fundiendo hard rock y bluegrass. Y es que tras una larga lucha contra el cáncer, hemos pedido también a Eddie Van Halen a los 65 años. Revolucionario de la guitarra, el músico holandés nacido en Nijmegen emigró a Estados Unidos con su familia a los ocho años y se asentó en Pasadena, California. A dúo con su hermano Alex formó una serie de grupos en los comienzos de la década de los 70 hasta que se cruzaron con el carismático David Lee Roth. La incorporación de Michael Anthony completó un cuarteto mítico como Van Halen. El único single de la banda que llegó al No. 1 de las listas fue “Jump”, extraído de su álbum 1984. Fue la canción que provocó fuertes tensiones entre los dos pesos pesados del grupo, Eddie Van Halen y David Lee Roth, culminando con la salida de este último del grupo. Lo curioso es que Roth recuperaría en 2006 la mítica canción en esta versión de bluegrass para su álbum Strummin' With the Devil: The Southern Side Of Van Halen, todo un homenaje al legendario grupo, en el que intervenían los más diversos invitados del género, entre ellos la John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band. El tejano Zane Williams, con siete discos en solitario y una veneración secular en la escena del Lone Star State, se refugió en una especie de supergrupo que tomó el primitivo nombre de Hill Country. Hay buena química y una variedad de formas que abarcan rock clásico, bluegrass, country y folk con unas armonías vocales como arma secreta. El viernes 2 de octubre las redes sociales de Hill Country colgaban un mensaje en el que informaban que pasaban a llamarse The Wilder Blue. Nuevo nombre, debido a un problema de marca registrada, pero la misma formación y los mismos argumentos sonoros. Su paseo por la montaña en “Evergreen” es uno de los momentos mágicos del cálido trabajo que les sirvió de debut. Por otro lado, Hill Country Revival se formó como grupo hace tres años en 2017 y muy pronto se han ido ganando una seria reputación en la escena de la Red Dirt music, aunando elementos de country, blues y folk, y entre los seguidores del Southern rock. Este quinteto que integran músicos de Montana, Georgia y Texas, se ha asentado en el Lone Star State recorriendo el circuito central de Texas, con paradas en el norte de Austin y el centro de San Antonio. Hill Country Revival tiene en el vocalista CJ Simmons la base de un sonido distintivo que se refleja en canciones como “Silver Fox”, anticipo de su álbum de debut. El country de los buenos tiempos lleva al recuerdo de las formas de Merle Haggard y los Strangers de la mano de Zephaniah OHora con un segundo álbum titulado Listening To The Music que incide en las enseñanzas del legendario artista de Bakersfield desde su tema de apertura, “Heaven’s On The Way”. Para este nuevo disco que da continuidad a This Highway, su debut de hace tres años, ha contado con la producción del desaparecido Neal Casal en abril de 2019. Zephaniah grabó este trabajo en The Bunker de Brooklyn, NY, a donde se mudó desde su natal New Hampshire para conseguir trabajo en el popular Skinny Dennis de Brooklyn, un bar que debe su nombre al que fuera bajista de Guy Clark. De esta forma, reivindica que la country music puede hacerse en cualquier lugar. El más reciente EP de Kurt Vile, Speed, Sound, Lonely KV (ep), se ha venido completando a lo largo de cuatro años en The Butcher Shoppe Studio de Nashville. Son cinco canciones, con dos versiones de John Prine y una de “Cowboy” Jack Clement además de dos temas originales del músico de Pennsylvania. A comienzos de año se editará físicamente en vinilo rosa y CD. Hoy hemos querido recrearnos con una versión de “Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness”, una canción inundada de una melancolía casi enfermiza por un amor perdido, que el legendario artista tristemente desaparecido a cuenta del Covid-19 incluyó en su álbum German Afternoons. Nuestros amigos de Track Dogs tienen en Fire On The Rails su cuarto álbum como grupo. Su nombre tiene que ver con los equipos de mantenimiento del metro de Nueva York, y su sonido reúne una enorme diversidad de fuentes, tal y como persiste en el término Americana, referida también a “Las Américas”. El último de los singles que acaban de extraer de ese trabajo cuenta con la especial colaboración de Ashley Campbell, hija del legendario Glenn Campbell, que incorpora su banjo en “Don’t Delay”, del que han lanzado un vídeo grabado desde los hogares de cada uno, incluyendo a la artista de Phoenix, Arizona. Ashley Campbell es la más joven de los ocho hijos que tuvo el mítico Glen Campbell. Hace dos años vino a nuestro país, pero ni tuvo el eco que merecía ni su álbum de entonces, The Lonely One, era la mejor tarjeta de presentación. Ahora es muy diferente. Su música es una mezcla de sus amplias influencias, combinando el sonido del country de la vieja escuela popularizado por su padre durante los años 60 y 70 con la Americana music contemporánea y las raíces más tradicionales. Eso se pone de manifiesto de forma evidente en Something Lovely, un álbum compacto y mucho más maduro en el que encontramos canciones tan deliciosas como “Moonlight”, que cierra el trabajo. "In The Name Of God" es una de las canciones más potentes del nuevo EP de los Mastersosns, Red, White & I Love You Too. Resulta ser una condena formal y conmovedora del estado actual del mundo, aunque fuera compuesta hace un par de años. Tristemente, la situación política ha empeorado. Durante la gira Lampedusa: Concert for Refugees que realizaron en 2018 en apoyo a los refugiados, fueron conscientes de la situación de las personas que se ven obligadas a abandonar sus tierras para huir de la violencia. Los mensajes de miedo y odio que se han difundido por parte de administraciones como la estadounidense les impulsaron a escribir canciones como “In The Name of God”. En estas fechas, Chris Masterson y Eleanor Whitmore están trabajando con Steve Earle en un álbum de homenaje a Justin Townes Earle, hijo de Steve, fallecido el pasado 20 de agosto. Durante las dos últimas décadas quienes han asistido a conciertos de Sunny Sweeney, Eliza Gilkyson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore o Butch Hancock se habrán fijado en una bajista llamada Bonnie Whitmore que también posee una voz especial. Es la hermana pequeña de Eleanor de los Mastersons, residente en Austin y habitual de la legendaria Continental Club Gallery de la ciudad tejana. Para grabar su álbum Last Will & Testament quiso tener cerca a su banda, The Sad Girls, y se refugió en el Ramble Creek Studio de la capital del mundo de la música en directo para completar un disco que no rehuye ninguno de los temas del momento, desde la ruptura al suicidio, pasando por esa “cultura” de la violación y la gran división de su país. Su idea es que hablar de todo ello deje de ser tabú y que podamos encontrar algo de consuelo y de paz. Dentro de este trabajo muy recomendable hay algún respiro emocional como ocurre en "Fine", compuesto junto a Jaimee Harris, y hablando sobre las vicisitudes de las relaciones. A sus 74 años, Linda Ronstadt ha unido un nuevo premio a su vasta colección. Aunque este es claramente especial. En la trigésimo tercera entrega anual de los Premios de la Herencia Hispana, recibió el de “leyenda”. La ceremonia se transmitió el martes por la noche a través de PBS, la cadena de televisión pública de Estados Unidos. Cuando Linda dejó la Universidad de Arizona tras el primer trimestre, fue para unirse al guitarrista Bob Kimmel, con quién ya había actuado junto a sus hermanos con el nombre de los Three Ronstadts en clubs locales. Ese recuerdo estuvo presente en el álbum Más Canciones de 1991, cuando Linda interpretó “El Camino” junto a sus dos hermanos Pete, que era por entonces jefe de policía en Tucson, Arizona, y Mike, que regentaba una tienda de hardware informático. No olvidemos que su padre era mejicano. Gilbert, cantaba con ella y sus otros dos hijos canciones de su tierra natal en los pocos ratos de ocio que les permitía la ferretería que regentaban. Linda nunca olvidó aquellas raíces, no tal solo en los distintos álbumes dedicados íntegramente a canciones hispanas, sino a lo largo de toda su carrera. La fusión del alma musical de dos países, Irlanda y México, dieron vida a un álbum tan conmovedor como San Patricio, la última colaboración entre los irlandeses Chieftains, que lidera Paddy Moloney, y el multi-instrumentista y cantautor Ry Cooder. Su título tiene que ver con la leyenda del batallón de San Patricio, un grupo de inmigrantes irlandeses que desertó del ejército estadounidense en 1846 para pelear al lado de los mexicanos contra los invasores yankees en la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos que duró hasta 1848. Fueron tildados de traidores por unos y de héroes por otros. Ahí estaba Linda Ronstadt con un tradicional como “A la orilla de un palmar”. Tras el éxito del documental Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, que recorría la carrera de la artista de Arizona, próximamente se estrenará Linda and the Mockingbirds, un documental sobre su viaje a México con un grupo de estudiantes el pasado 2019. Los canadienses Ian & Sylvia son parte de la quinta esencia del folk de aquel país, junto a su buen amigo Gordon Lightfoot. Ian Tyson y Sylvia Fricker se encontraron en su Canadá natal en 1960 y empezaron a actuar juntos muy pronto. Un par de años después vivían en Nueva York, donde llamaron la atención de Albert Grossman, que después se convertiría en el manager de Bob Dylan. A finales del 1962 lanzaron el primero de sus álbumes, Four Strong Winds, que estaba lleno de canciones tradicionales, exceptuando una versión impecable de “Tomorrow Is A Long Time” de Dylan y este tema propio que le daba nombre y que FolkAlley eligió como novena canción folk de todos los tiempos. Zane Williams se ha refugiado en Hill Country tras una carrera en solitario que ha dejado hasta siete álbumes muy recomendables. La banda la completan músicos de la solvencia del trovador Paul Eason, con tres álbumes propios además de ser el guitarrista habitual de Kevin Fowler, el multiinstrumentista Andy Rogers y una base ritmo que conforman el batería de Houston Lyndon Hughes y el bajista de Austin Sean Rodríguez. “Janie Lynn” se nos antoja como una canción perfecta para inaugurar el mes de julio en su primer fin de semana. El quinteto, con base en Texas, está encantado caminando por parajes fronterizos entre el country, el bluegrass y el folk, tal y como se manifiesta en su disco de debut, de título homónimo en el que aparecen ciertas referencias a Tom Petty, Jerry Jeff Walker o a James Taylor, como es el caso de “Somewhere Down The Road”, una canción con reflexiones de carretera donde, una vez más, las armonías vocales completan un edificio sonoro pleno de sugerencias. Hay personajes inolvidables, en el mejor de los sentidos, y ese es el caso de Tom Petty, el artista de Florida que nos abandonó hace casi tres años. Su carrera en solitario nos dejó tres álbumes impagables y el segundo de ellos, el mítico Wildflowers de 1994 se convirtió en una de las joyas de su discografía. En realidad, todos los Heartbreakers estuvieron al lado de su líder, excepto el batería Stan Lynch que fue sustituido por Steve Ferrone. Gracias a la familia de Petty y a sus archivos, se ha recuperado esta maqueta de uno de los temas punteros de aquel registro como es el caso de“You Don’t Know How It Feels”. En este caso, está grabada en su estudio casero un año antes de la edición del disco y los seguidores impenitentes del músico encontrarán diferencias en la letra, como una muestra más del proceso de creación. La versión que hoy escuchamos de “You Don’t Know How It Feels” da una sensación mucho más íntima y personal de la original. Además, encontramos un verso que más tarde aparecería en la penúltima canción de aquel mismo álbum, Crawling Back to You" que reflejó, como todo aquel Wildflowers, los 20 años de fracaso de Tom Petty en su matrimonio con Jane Benyo, de quien se divorciaría dos años más tarde. Había estrofas como "Estoy tan cansado de estar cansado/Seguro que la noche seguirá al día/La mayoría de las cosas que me preocupan/Nunca suceden de todos modos". Las sesiones de grabación de Wildflowers comenzaron en 1992, cuando el músico de Florida tenía la intención de dar continuidad a su debut en solitario Full Moon Fever del 89. Pero Petty había llegado a un acuerdo con Warner, con quien había grabado como miembro de los Traveling Wilburys, y aunque mantuvo a Rick Rubin como co-productor junto a Mike Campbell, decidió tomar el mando de aquel proyecto. De hecho, grabaron casi 30 canciones con la intención de que el álbum fuera doble, pero la compañía le convenció de que eligiera poco más de una docena. El éxito fue absoluto. Tras la muerte del músico se retomó la idea que él mismo expresó en sus últimos días de completar aquel proyecto, pero las diferencia entre la familia fue dilatando los tiempos. Ahora todo parece resuelto. El nuevo álbum de los Jayhawks, XOXO, que se publicará la próxima semana, evidencia que Gary Louris no tiene el monopolio del ahora cuarteto, especialmente en cuanto a la autoría de las canciones, aunque también existe un reparto en el protagonismo vocal. Además, la participación de Tim O’Reagan, Karen Grotberg y Marc Perlman se muestra sólida y sugestiva. O’Reagan y Grotberg, por ejemplo, han participado junto a Louris en la composición de “Bitter Pill”, que ilustra la búsqueda interminable de la felicidad sin conformarse con cada momento y que a nivel de texto es una especia de continuación de "Lovers Of The Sun" del álbum Paging Mr. Proust de hace cuatro años. Aquel disco llegó tras el fugaz regreso a los Jayhawks de Mark Olson, la banda regresó a una formación de cuarteto, la misma que editó en 1997 Sound of Lies y que fue responsable de un álbum tan brillante como Smile en 2000 y la misma que nos ha regalado XOXO en pleno 2020. Entre aquella docena de canciones selectas encontramos “Lovers Of The Sun”, donde los Jayhawks parecían estar mucho más cerca de Liverpool que de Minneapolis. El espíritu de los Beatles había hecho mella en Gary Louris y a nivel de texto ahora tiene continuidad en “Bitter Pill”, de su último álbum. El cantante y compositor Ray LaMontagne se ha esmerado en Monovision, su último álbum, convirtiéndolo en un prodigio a nivel creativo con ejemplos palpables del estilo de "I Was Born to Love You", donde la sencillez e incluso la discreción se adueñan de una historia mil veces contada. Este octavo disco del músico de New Hampshire es volver a lo básico, con una portada que incluso enfatiza con la idea mediante una vieja grabadora de cinta abierta. La calidez y la artesanía protagonizan un trabajo reconfortante de tonalidades sepia que resulta imprescindible en estos tiempos. Es prácticamente indiscutible que las mejores composiciones de aquellos tiempos convulsos de comienzos de los 70 fueron repartiéndose por distintos álbumes del canadiense Neil Young, como si quisiera esconder el sufrimiento que la separación de su novia de entonces supuso en su vida. Aun así, parece que dejó algunos temas de estructura poderosa como “Separate Ways”, que ahora ha utilizado para abrir “oficialmente” Homegrown. La amargura del final de aquella relación con la actriz Carrie Snodgress, es un impacto frontal en el disco El tono melancólico de Homegrown se establece de inmediato con "Separate Ways", con Ben Keith en el Steel, el contrapunto de Levon Helm y un recuerdo sonoro inevitable de Harvest, aunque en aquel legendario trabajo el sentimiento era totalmente inverso. Neil Young empezó a cantar en su gira del 93 y dejó de hacerlo en la de 2014, cuando su matrimonio con la desaparecida Pegi Young se estaba desmoronando. Self Made Man es el nombre genérico del nuevo disco de las hermanas Rebecca y Megan Lovell, nativas de Calhoun, en Georgia, a quienes conocemos como Larkin Poe desde 2010. Cinco años antes, junto a su otra hermana, Jessica, habían formado el trío Lovell Sisters. Seis Eps y cinco álbumes de estudio es la tarjeta de presentación de esta pareja que ahora reside en Nashville rompiendo la imagen habitual de Music Row. Ellas tienen una evidente herencia sureña, con sus raíces humedecidas por el rock, el country y el blues. Su esfuerzo por trascender les ha hecho dominar buena parte de los modos y maneras de esos estilos básicos de la música popular, procurando mostrar una diversidad de sonidos que combinan modernidad y tradición sin que parezca disonante o artificioso. Este quinto disco ha escalado hasta la primera plaza de las listas de blues de Billboard, gracias a canciones como "Back Down South", con la que resulta bastante lógico que haya quienes hablen de ellas como de las “hermanas pequeñas de los Allman Brothers”. Puede parecernos mentira, pero ya hace dos años que Susan Santos fue premiada en los European Blues Award como Best Performance y en 2019 se llevó el LA Music Critics Award de la californiana ciudad de Los Angeles, al mejor álbum gracias a No U Turn, su quinto y último disco por el momento. Además, el pasado verano la vimos al lado de Billy Gibbons en las Noches del Botánico, y no ha parado girar por Europa y Estados Unidos en los meses previos a la pandemia. Por suerte, tuvo tiempo de grabar en en North Hollywood y regalarnos el estreno de “Dirty Money”, uno de los cortes de su próximo EP. Con una evolución creciente y un marcado acento de progreso, la artista extremeña contó con una base de ritmo formada por el batería Anthony Morra, un nativo de Nashville con un más que suficiente prestigio, y el bajista Fabrizio Grossi, que también ha ejercido como productor de un trabajo rotundo, enérgico y que permite que Susan Santos muestre sus habilidades como instrumentista. Hoy es 4 de julio. En este día de 1776, el Congreso Continental Americano adoptó la Declaración de Independencia. Aquella fecha pasó a ser la del cumpleaños de los Estados Unidos de América. Han pasado 244 años, y en la despedida de nuestro programa de hoy queremos felicitar a aquel país y escuchar a una de las bandas que se han mostrado más activas en estos tiempos de pandemia: Old Crow Medicine Show. Su líder, Ketch Secor, nos ha regalado una nueva canción que compuso antes de la muerte de George Floyd y de las protestas posteriores. “Pray For America” pretende ser un escape, una forma de reflexionar y dar sentido a ciertas cosas… todos juntos. Secor ha comentado que se ha fijado en canciones inmortales como “Blowin’ In The Wind”, “God Bless America” o “This Land Is Your Land” por su mensaje universal, en el que todos puedan verse reflejados. Es una respuesta al racismo, es un grito de justicia ante el colapso económico o la brutalidad policial y tiene mucha intención de inspirar la unidad y poner al día ese libro de canciones de la música americana que parece necesitar actualizarse. Hoy comienza el verano y nosotros iniciamos TOMA UNO ni más ni menos que con Neil Young por partida doble. Primero recordando que, aunque casi todo aquel disco se había grabado a finales de agosto de 1973, fue el 20 de Junio de 1975, hace exactamente 45 años, cuando el canadiense publicaba su sexto álbum de estudio, Tonight's the Night. El disco es toda una explosión emocional por las muertes por sobredosis de Danny Whitten y Bruce Berry en los meses previos a la grabación. El disco es tan personal y complicado de asimilar que lo dejaron guardado y por medio aparecieron trabajos como Times Fades Away y On the Beach, donde reflejó las inseguridades de la América posterior al Watergate. Con los Santa Monica Flyers como banda de acompañamiento, es decir Ben Keith, Nils Lofgren y la base de ritmo de Crazy Horse, Billy Talbot y Ralph Molina, “Albuquerque” fue una de las canciones más distinguidas de aquel registro desolador. Y ayer mismo, 46 años después de ser concebido, ha salido a la luz aquel Homegrown, con una selección de 12 cortes, de los que siete son inéditos y otros cinco que hemos conocido a lo largo del tiempo, repartidos por diferentes álbumes. Una de las canciones desconocidas hasta ahora es "Vacancy", grabada en el Broken Arrow Ranch Studio del propio Young en enero de 1975, con Stan Szelest al órgano Wurlitzer, Ben Keith en el lap Steel, el bajista Tim Drummond y Karl T. Himmel a la batería. En ocasiones tenemos la enorme suerte de poder compartir el regreso discográfico de unos de los grandes baluartes de la música popular, con una relación muy directa con la Americana. Me refiero al legendario Dan Penn, cuyo nombre tiene una relación directa con los mejores momentos del FAME Studio de Rick Hall en Muscle Shoals y los American Studios de Chips Moman en Memphis. Si recordamos canciones como “The Letter”, “Dark End Of The Street”, "Always on My Mind" o "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)" encontraremos su nombre, además de ser uno de los artífices de la eclosión del mejor country-soul. Saltando entre Muscle Shoals y Nashville, el músico de Vernon, en Alabama, ha decidido volver a primera línea con el lanzamiento el 28 de agosto de Living on Mercy, su primer álbum en solitario en 26 años. En ese disco recopila canciones antiguas e inéditas junto a material más cercano en el tiempo. Lo primero que hemos escuchado es su tema central, un punto de encuentro entre el gospel y el soul. La compuso con Wayne Carson, una leyenda de Denver con el que ha creado canciones desde hace décadas y que lamentablemente murió hace casi cinco años. Eso supone un homenaje a uno de sus mejores socios y amigos. Asterisk the Universe parece ser una reflexión de su autor, John Craigie sobre la América del siglo XXI en la que le ha tocado vivir, aunque los últimos 100 días pudieran haber distorsionado su impresión viajera de la realidad. En cualquier caso, el disco de este californiano de Los Angeles con tintes de moderno trovador expone un ambiente acogedor en el que participan sus amigos de los Coffis Brothers, las Rainbow Girls, los Honeydrops y Old Soul Orchestra con actores presenciales, algo que ahora nos provoca un sentimiento de nostalgia. En un ambiente etéreo que deambula por el folk, la psicodelia y, una vez más, los sonidos de rhythm and blues clásicos. Asterisk the Universe da la impresión de que nos podemos tomar un respiro. "Part Wolf" es un ejemplo perfecto de una posible versión irónica de la cultura estadounidense del presente. La canción comienza animando a sus compatriotas a levantarse y votar en noviembre. Las distintas situaciones personales creadas por esta pandemia ha permitido descubrir algunas rutas alternativas que, por ejemplo, nos lleven hasta Jeff Crosby, un músico con cinco álbumes en su curriculum convertido en nuevo miembro de Reckless Kelly tras la marcha del guitarrista David Abeyta. Originario del norte de Idaho, pasó una dura etapa en Los Angeles mientras mostraba al mundo su capacidad como compositor, escribiendo algunas canciones que formaron parte de la banda sonora de Sons of Anarchy. Su nuevo álbum es Northstar, donde parece haber dividido su propuesta sonora en dos partes. La primera tiene un acento más cercano a la resignación, mientras la segunda se asienta en propuesta tan sugerentes como el melancólico “Born To be Lonely”. Es bastante fácil que los seguidores de Turnpike Troubadours reconozcan la sonoridad del violín de Kyle Nix, miembro de la banda de Oklahoma convertida en referente de la Red Dirt Music. Su álbum en solitario, Lightning on the Mountain & Other Short Stories, que verá la luz la próxima semana, deja tonadas tan entrañables como "Sweet Delta Rose", inspirada en una relación de ensueño a larga distancia como la vivida con su ahora mujer. Una prueba de que en ocasiones vale la pena esperar. Kyle se unió a Turnpike Troubadours poco después de que se formara la banda, cuando conoció a Evan Felker y RC Edwards en un concierto. Colter Wall es el más reconocible de los cowboy singers canadienses del momento y en un par de meses lanzará al mercado su tercer álbum, Western Swing & Waltzes y Other Punchy Songs, como continuación del magnífico Songs of the Plains de hace un par de temporadas. "Western Swing & Waltzes" es la primera muestra sonora de un trabajo muy esperado que nos permite intuir que el músico de Saskatchewan sigue recorriendo las sendas de la tradición vaquera. De hecho, sabemos que entre los temas elegidos para completar el nuevo álbum vamos a encontrarnos con clásicos como "I Ride an Old Paint" y "Big Iron". Grabado en los Yellow Dog Studios de Wimberley, en Texas, Adam Odor y David Percefull vuelven a estar a su lado, al igual que su banda de acompañamiento habitual en las giras. Las colinas del country están repartidas por los estados de Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, California o Nueva York, dando un tono de universalidad a un estilo tan enraizado. Hill Country es un buen ejemplo, convertido en quinteto bajo el liderazgo de Zane Williams para seguir explorando territorios sonoros que se exponen en su álbum de debut, con el nombre del grupo como título y grabado entre Austin y Houston durante un año. A lo largo del disco se hacen evidentes sus inclinaciones por las formas de James Taylor, los SteelDrivers, Michael Martin Murphey o Jerry Jeff Walker, como ocurre en “Dixie Darlin’” con ecos de esos veteranos trovadores del Lone Star State. La próxima semana se publica On The Road: A Tribute To John Hartford, un álbum que celebra el legado del desaparecido músico neoyorquino que elevó a las más altas cotas su dedicación al folk, el country y el bluegrass. La colección de 14 canciones ha reunido a un grupo muy diverso de artistas que crecieron a partir de las semillas plantadas por John Hartford durante cinco décadas. Allí encontramos, entre otros, a su hijo Jamie, Todd Snider, Sam Bush, John Carter Cash, The Travelin' McCourys, Jerry Douglas, The Band Of Heathens, Norman Blake o The Infamous Stringdusters. Estos últimos han sido los encargados de recrearse en "Gentle On My Mind", que le propició dos premios Grammy a nivel personal y otros tantos a Glen Campbell por su versión que se ha convertido en un clásico. John Hartford fue imprescindible en el desarrollo del bluegrass y pionero en su experimentación, para hacerle progresar y convertirlo en lo que conocemos como Newgrass. Estas fechas de aislamiento forzoso nos están dejando algunas sorpresas y curiosidades que merecen mucho la pena. La mayor parte de los shows televisivos se hacen desde platós sin público y con la participación de invitados desde casa. Hace una semana, Margo Price estuvo presentando su nuevo álbum, That’s How Rumors Get Started, producido por Sturgill Simpson en el programa This Morning: Saturday interpretando un par de temas de este trabajo que se editará el 10 de julio. Como regalo inesperado, Margo hizo una versión de "Things Have Changed" de Bob Dylan, una canción que apareció hace 20 años en la fantástica banda sonora de la película Wonder Boys, protagonizada por Michael Douglas y titulada en España Jóvenes prodigiosos. Dylan ganó el Oscar y el Globo de Oro a mejor canción original. Hoy la despedida de nuestro tiempo de radio hasta mañana viene de la mano de India Ramey, cantautora de Nashville, que anticipa su nuevo disco, Shallow Graves, con "King of the Ashes", una canción de tintes casi apocalípticos sobre la llamada era Trump y el aprovechamiento de los temerosos y los débiles. A primeros de abril vio la luz el álbum de título homónimo del californiano Logan Ledger, pero acaba de lanzar un nuevo tema propio como “River Of Fools”, que originalmente formó parte de la serie Amazon Original vinculada al productor T Bone Burnett, con la melancolía y la elegancia de un Western gótico puesto al día. A Logan Ledger le gusta dejarse mecer por las formas clásicas del estilo, con argumentos que les fueron propios a George Jones, Lefty Frizzell e incluso Roger Miller, como en este caso. Este comienzo de programa incide en las melodías clásicas del country de los buenos tiempos y ahora nos lleva al recuerdo de las formas de Merle Haggard y los Strangers de la mano de Zephaniah OHora que, por fin, anticipa su segundo álbum, previsto para finales de agosto, con esta delicia llamada “All American Singer”, con ciertos ecos de "The Fightin' Side of Me". El músico mantiene sus relatos de historias honestas y reales, reivindicando que la country music puede hacerse en cualquier lugar. Zephaniah grabó este trabajo en The Bunker de Brooklyn, NY, a donde se mudó desde su natal New Hampshire para conseguir trabajo en el popular Skinny Dennis de Brooklyn, un bar que debe su nombre al que fuera bajista de Guy Clark. Para este nuevo disco que da continuidad a This Highway, su debut de hace tres años, ha contado con la producción del desaparecido Neal Casal en abril de 2019, además de recuperar el Steel guitar de Jon Graboff, así como John Shannon a la guitarra, el propio Neal Casal e invitados como Courtney Jaye y Dori Freeman haciendo coros y el gran Mickey Raphael en la armónica. Es posible que Leroy Virgil sea uno de los grandes compositores del country contemporáneo aún por descubrir. Con suS raíces en Reno, Nevada, a pesar de haber nacido en Aberdeen, en el estado de Washington, el líder vital de Hellbound Glory, nunca había dedicado el tiempo suficiente a homenajear a la conocida como “la ciudad pequeña más grande del mundo”, famosa por Kurt Cobain. El álbum Pure Scum es, en cuanto a historias, una especie de viaje por los estereotipos más sórdidos que se le han agregado a Reno desde siempre. Y Leroy Virgil parece hasta estar orgulloso de que la virtud no sea precisamente una de las características de sus personajes. El mundo de Hellbound Glory es punzante, con una cierta poesía en como presentan a los desafectos de la sociedad en la vida real. "Damned Angel" tiene una especial brillantez gracias a la producción de Shooter Jennings y a su banda de acompañamiento que han pulido el resultado final. Un caso parecido al de Leroy Virgil, escondido tras Hellbound Glory, podemos observar con Zane Williams y Hill Country. El tejano, con siete discos en solitario y una veneración secular en la escena del Lone Star State, se ha refugiado ahora en una especie de supergrupo donde se han reunido, además de Zane, Paul Eason, guitarrista habitual de Kevin Fowler, el multiinstrumentista Andy Rogers y una base ritmo que conforman el batería de Houston Lyndon Hughes y el bajista de Austin Sean Rodríguez. Hay buena química y una variedad de formas que abarcan rock clásico, bluegrass, country y folk con unas armonías vocales como arma secreta. "Hill Country" como término puede asociarse a Luckenbach y Jerry Jeff Walker, a las colinas de los Apalaches o a las de la dorada California. En todos los casos son influencias de una especial diversidad creativa que han dado origen a sonidos fuertemente enraizados. El quinteto tomó el nombre de Great Balsam Range, una cadena montañosa que rodea a su condado de origen. Eso sí, eliminaron “Great” para no ser pretenciosos. Sturgill Simpson es una persona indescifrable. El pasado 5 de este mes de junio, el artista de Kentucky, que se ha recuperado con extraordinaria rapidez del COVID-19, subió al escenario del mítico Ryman Auditorium para anticipar el que será su nuevo álbum, un proyecto dedicado íntegramente al bluegrass y en el que contará con algunos de los mejores músicos de Nashville. La grabación de este nuevo disco fue anunciada en Instagram por el propio artista con un mensaje que borró muy pronto en el que avisaba “Preparen su Zyrtec (que es un antihistamínico contra la alergia) porque estamos cortando la hierba”. Sturgill Simpson es una persona indescifrable. El pasado 5 de este mes de junio, el artista de Kentucky, que se ha recuperado con extraordinaria rapidez del COVID-19, subió al escenario del mítico Ryman Auditorium para anticipar el que será su nuevo álbum, un proyecto dedicado íntegramente al bluegrass y en el que contará con algunos de los mejores músicos de Nashville. Entre las canciones interpretadas por Sturgill Simpson en la hora aproximada de concierto, mostró una serie de temas perteneciente a sus álbumes anteriores pasados por el filtro del bluegrass. Ese fue el caso de “Long White Line”, uno de los cortes de Metamodern Sounds In Country Music, que produjo Dave Cobb en 2014 y que supuso su segundo disco en solitario, grabado con 4.000 dólares en cinco días y medio. El concierto de Sturgill Simpson en un Ryman Auditorium sin público tuvo mucho de recorrido por su carrera, que no olvidó sus aventuras como miembro de Sunday Valley, formado en 2004 junto al batería Edgar Purdom III y el bajista Gerald Evans, aunque tuvieron un impasse debido al trabajo de Sturgill en el ferrocarril. El grupo se reformó y en 2011 publicaron el álbum To The Wind And On To Heaven, donde se incluyó la versión original de “All The Pretty Colors”, recordada en el Ryman de esta forma. El escenario acogió a Sturgill Simpson con su Martin D-28 acompañado por la mandolinista Sierra Hull, Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Bub (bajo), Scott Vestal (banjo), Tim O'Brien y Mark Howard (guitarras) y su viejo amigo Miles Miller (batería). Como el propio artista recordó, "probablemente la mejor banda de bluegrass del planeta". Es indudable que el nuevo álbum de Sturgill Simpson va a ser todo un acontecimiento, con esa revisión tan particular de algunas de las canciones de sus discos precedentes. Así ha ocurrido con “All Around You”, una de las piezas de A Sailor's Guide To Earth de hace cuatro años. Aquel tercer disco del kentuckyano superó por entonces todas las previsiones, dando un notable giro a su andadura y logrando situarse en la cima de las listas y el reconocimiento de la Academia. “All Around You” ya fue uno de los cortes más reconocibles y cercanos de aquel trabajo que ahora en esta versión parece perfecto para paisajes agrestes y saludables. El concierto de Sturgill Simpson en el Ryman de hace una semana también incluyó un par de versiones de los Stanley Brothers, una banda seminal para los seguidores del bluegrass. Al margen de “Sharecropper's Son”, Sturgill eligió “Pretty Polly”, un tradicional que la pareja de hermanos grabó en 1951. Ahora tan solo nos queda esperar la edición de este nuevo registro de un músico siempre impaciente por sorprendernos en su actividad creativa. Entre las últimas ocupaciones de Sturgill Simpson antes de la llegada de la pandemia debemos recordar la producción de su último álbum¸ That's How Rumors Get Started, de su buena amiga Margo Price, para lo que se marcharon a los legendarios estudios EastWest de Hollywood. El resultado refleja un momento determinado que ahora adquiere un significado diferente, como si todo se hubiera ralentizado. El trabajo, que habla de su propia maternidad, el estrellato, la industria Nashville o la crisis nacional de salud, da la impresión de ser un álbum más cercano, en el que ha prescindido de las motivaciones políticas que incidieron mucho en sus anteriores discos, aunque Margo mantiene en suS declaraciones públicas su vigor habitual. Compuesta por la artista de Aledo, en Illinois, y su marido, Jeremy Ivey, “Letting Me Down” está protagonizada por un par de adolescentes que intentan escapar de lo cotidiano y que tiene cierta similitud con unos amigos de secundaria. En este álbum podemos encontrar canciones mucho más personales, que hablan de la maternidad, el estrellato, la transformación de Nashville o la crisis de salud. Sarah Jarosz nos ha regalado un disco tan brillante como World On The Ground, el primero en solitario desde hace 4 años. Ha sido grabado en su estudio casero de Manhattan y ha contado con la producción de John Leventhal, marido de Rosanne Cash, para centrarse en la vida en una ciudad pequeña, como pudiera ser su natal Wimberley, en Texas, con poco más de 2.500 habitantes. Es una especie de retrato fuera del tiempo. El título de World On The Ground está tomado de uno de sus temas más sobresalientes, “Pay It No Mind”, la canción de un pájaro que contempla el mundo y que sirve como ilustración de la portada del álbum, un cuadro de Erin E. Murray que sus padres le regalaron. Brit Taylor es la pareja de Adam Chaffins, pero es mucho más que eso. Crecida al este de Kentucky, ha mantenido sus raíces en su traslado a Nashville y ha superado un descalabro emocional que gracia a su determinación y música. Así nació “Waking Up Ain't Easy”, que reescribe su nuevo plan de vida, sobreponiéndose a los peores presagios. Esta nueva canción se ha convertido en un tema refrescante debido a su vulnerabilidad e incluso su complejidad, con una agudeza emocional que lo hace muy sugestivo. Es evidente que Steve Earle es un personaje especialmente inquieto y esta etapa de aislamiento producido por la pandemia le mueve a compartir con sus seguidores sus inquietudes. Ahora hemos conocido una versión acústica de "Times Like These", una canción compuesta al comienzo de la presidencia de Donald Trump que resume la ansiedad de una era como esta y recordando que aún puede haber esperanza a pesar de lo sombrío del presente. La versión junto a los Dukes se grabó en el Electric Ladyland Studios mientras estaban trabajando en su último disco, Ghost Of West Virginia, y se publicará el 29 de agosto cuando se celebre el Record Store Day. La emotividad de la música de John Prine ha regresado cuando su familia ha compartido la última canción grabada por el mítico artista que nos arrebató el Covid-19 el pasado mes de abril. Se trata de "I Remember Everything", compuesta por Prine y su buen amigo Pat McLaughlin y contando con la producción de Dave Cobb para contar recuerdos del pasado que dejan una marca indeleble. Join me and Chris for a fascinating look into his life on the cusp of the release of his album and his undying passion for  Cowboy tradition and the modern cowboy lifestyle. For 2019 Chris is set to release a highly anticipated new album. Chris teamed up with Nashville producer, Trent Willmon, who will be producing the album. Chris wrote or co-wrote 11 of the 12 songs to be included on the album and Willmon co-wrote 8 of the 12 songs.  As a songwriter Trent has written many songs that have been cut by other notable artists including Brad Paisley, Eric Church, Little Big Town, Cody Johnson, Blake Shelton, Maddie and Tae, Merle Haggard, Wade Hayes, Randy Houser, Kevin Fowler, Granger Smith, Roger Creager, and many more. Trent also is credited with the Billboard top 5 hit “Keep on Lovin’ You” by Steel Magnolia, and Montgomery Gentry’s #1 hit “Back When I Knew it All.” As a producer Trent has truly shined and is credited in large part for the rise of Nashville’s newest sensation, Cody Johnson. Cody’s Album, “Ain’t Nothin’ to It”, also produced by Willmon reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Country Charts in 2019. Chris was raised in a small town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Here he developed a love for horses, and everything about the cowboy lifestyle. He was drawn to the old cowboys around town who took him under their wing and taught him about horses. Chris built a love of starting colts and building confidence in young horses. By combining his love for horses and a love for art and photography, Chris started Diehard Cowboy–A company built to share the cowboy lifestyle and his authentic music with others. Chris spends as much time as he can riding horses and starting colts. Chris also works for several ranches to get a reprieve from his regular schedule. You can take a glimpse in this life by following. @Diehardcowboy_ Chris got somewhat of a late start into his music career. Earlier in life the fear of singing in front of other people kept him from getting on stage. Even though Chris never sang in public until he was in college, music was always present. Chris would often write songs while driving, or riding his horses, but singing would only happen around his close friends. Friends soon began to encourage him to sing more and to share his songs. Eventually Chris started writing and recording the songs that he had written but they were only heard by those in his inner circle. A turning point came when Country Musician, Collin Raye, heard a burnt CD of a few of Chris’ songs. Collin asked if Chris would be willing to open an upcoming concert for him. The night of the concert came and Chris faced his fear, took the stage, and sang to a hometown crowd. This was a moment that changed Chris’ life. After encouragement from Collin Raye, Chris set his sights on pursuing his career as a songwriter and performer. It took a lot of  work to overcome his fear. Chris spent a full year singing once a week at a local venue with his guitar before he finally felt he could play for a crowd. Eventually Chris was playing for larger audiences in shows across the country. He played during the Houston Rodeo at NRG park,  and even packed his guitar to Missouri. In 2017 Chris was selected as a finalist at the Kerrville Songwriting Competition in, Kerrville, Texas. Many past finalists had gone on to become notable performers  like, Steve Earl, Tom Russel, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, and Zane Williams. Chris has always been a big supporter of the men and women who serve our country and communities. He has written two songs in their honor. “Every Time I Hear the Rain” as well as “He Still Pays the Price.” As a musician Chris sticks to his country roots. He loves playing traditional country music with influences like George Strait, Merle Haggard, and Chris Ledoux. These influences are also reflected in Chris’ writing. We kick off another "Inside Music Row" with the mention of George Strait.  George has announced the final leg of his "Cowboy Rides Away Tour" with the final show plaing at Dallas' AT&T Stadium and plans on retiring from touring - although he will do a few events here and there.  Brett Eldredge is flying high right now fresh off the very first number one single, he celebrated by going skydiving.  Now he's continuing the momentum with his first headlining club tour.  Look for the "Bring You Back" Fall tour to make twenty stops after kicking things off in Oxford, Ohio this week.  Joe Nichols is also in the news as he is getting back in gear with the release of "Crickets.  Look for the album to hit stores next week.  Up next is former American Idol winner Scotty McCreery as he has donated $50,000 to various youth baseball programs with money raised from his "Major League Baseball Tour."  His sophomore project, "See You Tonight," hits stores October 15th.  Finally, we go Inside The Song with Zane Williams to hear about his new single "Overnight Success."

The gracious citizens of Burns, Tennessee played host to the Third Annual Americana Folk Festival at Montgomery Bell State Park October 21.
