Brian Whitlock, Vice President of Global R&D Procurement at Bristol Myers Squibb shares his experience in building a high-performance operating model to support the business objectives of biopharmaceutical research. In the latest episode of the PharmaSource podcast Brian explains how the procurement operating model had to change following 2019, when BMS announced the acquisition of Celgene. “The acquisition was a sea change for how we think about procurement, and how to support a much larger critical R&D business unit with 9,000 scientists worldwide.” he says. Procurement had to align with the priorities for the wider Bristol Myers Squibb business: building a world class pipeline, improving productivity and reducing development cycle times while also delivering high quality medicines to our patients. In order for procurement to support this, Brian explains that “There has been a lot of process reengineering, both internally and with our partners, but also tapping capabilities that exist within the supplier market, that perhaps we have not made a direct investment in.” Brian worked with leaders within R&D function to design an operating model that “not only focuses on driving the high volume, high risk and high visibility opportunities but also have individuals with unique skill sets that can drive an innovation portfolio.” “Procurement played a very important role sitting at the table with our stakeholders to bring those new capabilities to our enterprise.” “One of the things I absolutely love about R&D is we have very creative scientists that come up with challenging opportunities. Every day is different. Every challenge is a little bit unique. It's that variation, and the complexity of these challenges that really motivate us day to day.” The conversation covers the follows: Strategic procurement helps navigate challenging times Cultivate an innovation mindset to increase speed to market Re-designing procurement for speed Deep accountability for your category Innovation comes from smaller transactions One team, serving Patients BMS Prime: Enabling self service The growing importance of Computer Aided Research How important is having a scientific background? Speed is Greater than Savings - How Grünenthal Created a Procurement Centre of Excellence Focused on Speed

PharmaSource Podcast

Dr. Thortsen Fallisch, Head of Global R&D Procurement at Grünenthal spoke to PharmaSource about his experience in setting up a Procurement Centre of Excellence and why speed can be more important than savings. Thorsten joined Grünenthal at an exciting time when it centralised Procurement was a  "new, mostly unshaped  function". It meant he could make a real impact on the function and see the improving results. Establishing a Sourcing Board One of the first areas they identified was that there was not  a standardised process for the category managers to do sourcing activities  “Tenders sometimes only invited three or even one vendor because it was clear from the very beginning who would be the 'Chosen One', often driven by stakeholders” Thorsten introduced a Sourcing Board council where the category managers had to present how they are planning to run that tender.  To support that process, they introduced the governance that for any tenders over €100,000 Euros would  need to have at least three valid offers. A methodology was agreed in advance agreed for how the offers would be evaluated. For example, procurement would want 50% of the weighted criteria to be price or costs associated with the tender. "The category manager could the run the tender, and when they had decided which vendor to take, they had to come back to the sourcing board and get the final approval." "This framework helped to structure the process and created a lot of transparency about what was being worked on. " To embed this required a lot of personal energy to guide and support team members through the process and communication. With a geographically dispersed team they put a lot of efforts on our on fostering our internal community through their intranet. “This starting off with a page and a bit of content,  over time, we developed a real plan, with a fortnightly newsletters and regular Townhalls with the teams. “ How technology was used to enable change The process started by being managed in Excel and PowerPoint documents, with sourcing mangers completing templates to present their case to the Sourcing Board. The next step was a tool Grünenthal developed themselves specifically to manage the sourcing process, where all information previously in PowerPoint could be put in the tool.  Finally, they implemented an E-Procurement platform. After  evaluating a number of vendors they before decided to use Jaeger,  a platform they have been using for the last two years.  Why speed is more important than savings Since moving into a new role focusing on R&D, Thorsten has continued to play a role in the development of the Sourcing Board so that it partners better with his new stakeholders. His main objective has been to accelerate the process.  “To understand the friction with R&D and Procurement you have to understand one thing…  Speed is more important than savings” "The faster you develop a drug, the more time you have left on the market. That's why  Grünenthal as a company deliberately took the approach to to conduct some of the R&D studies in parallel and prioritise speed." The Sourcing Board approach was perceived as delaying the process too much, so now a faster process involves the stakeholders earlier to make decisions.  "We now call it the 'Category Council' which is now a more stakeholder-oriented way of taking vendor decisions. So it's not only the sourcing board and procurement internal council that approves a decision on the vendor, but stakeholders are closely involved throughout" "Prioritising speed is an interesting challenge for someone in procurement to have! Not to focus on savings but on speed makes a nice change.” says Thorsten. https://pharmasource.global/content/podcast/how-to-create-a-procurement-centre-of-excellence-a-conversation-with-dr-thorsten-fallish/

Due to an enthusiastic response from early podcast listeners, we're reairing ‘Attached to Hygiene' episode 11: The Hygiene Market in 2035. This popular episode features Nick Carter, Vice President, Nonwovens Marketing at Avgol Nonwovens; DeeAnn Nelson, NA-R&D and Innovation Manager at Avgol; and Darius Deak, Global R&D Director for Bostik. Along with host Jack Hughes, they make predictions about the future of the nonwovens industry. Demographics and market trends in absorbent hygieneHow will the absorbent hygiene industry look in 2035? Jack and the three experts consider where the current trends are leading us based in part on market shifts being observed with Millennials and Gen Z consumers. For example, the Millennials are having children later than previous generations, or not having them at all. That mindset, along with ‘Black Swan' events like COVID-19, has resulted in the number of babies being born dropping significantly. This trend started in the 1980s and continues into the present day. Many Millennials are instead focusing on their pets, or ‘fur babies', which means there has been a shift from growth in baby care to pet care products. Also, the trend of e-commerce is playing a much bigger role in purchasing decisions. On the other end of the spectrum, the aging population is growing. This will likely result in more potential for the adult incontinence market. The impact of legislation and the need for sustainability More and more, consumers are seeking sustainable products. However, the legislation that is pushing for changes regarding single-use articles is sometimes getting ahead of the technology needed for the product to adapt. One example: Mexico City instituted a tampon ban before manufacturers were prepared with alternatives. Other times there are unintended consequences of legislated changes, such as a region's water source being unable to support a product like a reusable diaper. Both offer challenges and opportunities for producers and suppliers, who have to be ready with innovations.Outline of the Episode[02:09] Introduction of guests and overview of their backgrounds [08:11] Avgol's presentation at Hygienix 2020 as inspiration for episode[09:11] Market demographics in the absorbent hygiene industry[12:09] Millennials are putting off or choosing not to have children[15:19] Purchasing trends, such as e-commerce, of Gen Z[20:22] How legislation is outpacing technology[27:05] ‘Black Swan' events like COVID-19 and their effect on the market[36:30] Being sustainable whilst offering a product that meets consumers' needs[41:17] What are Avgol and Bostik doing to address the changes in the marketplace?Recommended ResourcesContact Nick on LinkedIn.Contact DeeAnn on LinkedIn.Contact Darius on LinkedIn.To learn more about the trend of sustainability in the industry, read our article ‘Is There a Sustainable Future for Disposable Hygiene?'Get Connected with Attached to HygieneTake our Listener Survey to receive an early copy of our CSR Whitepaper.Connect with Jack Hughes on LinkedIn. Abhi Seth started his journey as an industrial engineer which he describes as his passion, and then found his way into research. His PhD is in mechanical engineering, and human-computer interactions, which he says was kind of a double major PhD. Abhi started working with virtual reality applications for mechanical engineering and says back then it was about how to simulate environments and models where you create a suspension of disbelief for a user. So he set out to prove that VR was also valuable in solving real industrial problems which led him to join the Global R&D centre for Caterpillar, the world's largest mining construction equipment manufacturer. Abhi currently leads a global data analytics team for TE Connectivity, a $14B electronics manufacturing company. He says he is always up for a challenge and learning something new, one of the reasons he decided to join TE Connectivity. We learn from Abhi about the purpose of centres of excellence, the differences between data science COE, and a centralized department and how do you measure success with analytics. Enjoy the show! Medverkande: Johan Norberg. Då: liberal debattör verksam vid Tibro. Idag: författare och alltjämt liberal. America Vera-Zavala. Då: Frontfigur i Attac och Ung Vänster. DuPont knows that learning from mistakes and making sure others can learn and pivot their innovative project because of known mistakes is so helpful. But there must be a culture where brilliant failures are celebrated or learned from, not swept under the rug and ridiculed. Innovation, trying new ideas, is a fail game; it is natural, helpful, and company’s ought to create a safe space for sharing innovation struggles and failures so that people can brilliantly fail as well as brilliantly succeed, because they actually go hand in hand. Aproveitem!

Day 7 of One Month to Operationalizing Your Compliance Program

FCPA Compliance Report

I continue my discussion of operationalizing your compliance program through the risk management process by considering risk-based monitoring. I continue this series based upon interviews with Ben Locwin, Director of Global R&D at BioGen and an operational strategist in pharma and healthcare, to explore risk forecast, risk assessment and risk monitoring for the compliance profession.  Locwin said, “Risk-based monitoring is really about continuous, ongoing monitoring for those things which provide the most potential future risk to you. In other words, instead of a static risk registry that may come in part with forecasting, where you would say, “We’re trying to anticipate these risks.” By using risk-based monitoring to review issues on an ongoing basis, and the models that are behind the risk-based modeling, risk-based monitoring models, they’re continuously refined based on incoming data.”  The problem for many companies is they are siloed in not only their data but also in the systems. Locwin explained that because of the disparity of data systems, “They may not be tracking rigorous, quantified information all the time.” He cited to an example from the pharmaceutical world where a company could well have 50 worldwide sites where a drug product is being tested. Some patients receive a placebo and some patients receive the medication being tested. As data comes in you begin to note patterns in certain patients and groups, which might actually point towards a variety of testing errors by physicians administering the test.  Through the use of risk-based monitoring, you can begin to see things in “almost real-time, time-based trends of real data that you can then jump on and try to make adjustments before things get really wacky.” The implications to the compliance practitioner? Having access to information around sales, the sales process and corporate largess in things from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) work to gifts, travel and entertainment to conferences for customers and end users. Through the use of such risked-based monitoring a compliance professional would have the opportunity see trends developing which could allow an intervention for a prescriptive solution which could prevent an issue from becoming a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violation. Yet Locwin cautioned that compliance professionals should guard against bias. In an article by Locwin, entitled “Be Careful When Appraising Industry Trends”, he stated, “Social media has rapidly accelerated the agility with which the public can change allegiance and direction. It used to be that when information dissemination was slower and more compartmentalized within regions and market segments, that the market resistance to fluctuation was more robust. Now well-placed advertising, social commentary, or public response to corporate missteps can swirl into a maelstrom of market changes within hours that is agnostic to region or market segment.”  In today’s world, the speed at which reputational damage reigns out can overwhelm a corporation’s ability to respond. Here one might consider Wells Fargo and how fast the situation spun out of control for them after its $185MM fine was announced. It is through the use of risk-based monitoring, which allows for this almost real-time input, that a response to a forecasted, assessed or even unassessed risk can be developed. In the compliance world, such tools could be brought to bear when considering not only the expense side of such areas as gifts, travel and entertainment but also sales side data. This could be internal company data on its own salesforce and also information developed from or concerning your third-party sales team.  In Locwin’s primary world of pharmaceutical testing and product development, the need for such real-time information can be more critical. Yet through the development of these techniques as compliance tools, the compliance profession can add value to an organization through the use of risk-based monitoring. With the plethora of data on where and how corruption is likely to occur, coupled with meaningful sales and expense data, the compliance professional should be able to move from detect to prevent to prescriptive compliance solutions to prevent legal violations.  Finally, the beauty of all these techniques is that they are tools that can make companies more efficient and, at the end of the day, more profitable. They also move compliance into the fabric and DNA of an organization or in the terminology of the Department of Justice (DOJ) Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs, operationalize compliance. The DOJ has made clear what it expects around the risk management process. You need to develop your response now.  Three Key Takeaways Risk-based monitoring is a follow on from forecasting and risk assessments in the risk management process. Risk based monitoring can provide real-time feedback and input from your operationalized compliance program. Use risk-based monitoring to cut through corporate siloes.  This month’s podcast series is sponsored by Oversight Systems, Inc.
