GeorgiaRadio.com Continues Conversations with Local Authors: J.D. "Doug" Porter Discusses His Latest BookGEORGIA RADIO - We're thrilled to continue our series of conversations with local Georgia authors, celebrating the rich tapestry of voices that make up our literary community. This week, Matt Jolley sits down with J.D. "Doug" Porter, a retired manager of parks, zoos, and museums who has seamlessly transitioned into the literary world with his latest book, "Roaming, Rambling, and Reminiscing: Musings from a South Georgia Mule Wagon."After a remarkable forty-year career dedicated to wildlife and education, Doug retired only to find himself in an unexpected yet fitting role: a part-time mule wagon driver at a quail hunting plantation in South Georgia. This unique job, driving mules and observing hunters amid the serene pine forests, provided Doug with ample time for reflection. It was during these quiet moments, accompanied by cantankerous mules and a lively cocker spaniel, that Doug began to pen his thoughts, eventually leading to a series of newspaper articles and ultimately, his latest book."Roaming, Rambling, and Reminiscing" offers readers a profound glimpse into Doug's contemplations on a lifetime spent with the non-human animals that share our planet. His insights are both reflective and engaging, capturing the essence of his experiences from the vantage point of a mule wagon. In addition to his non-fiction work, Doug is also a talented fiction writer. His debut novel, "The Menagerie, A Zoo Story," explores the lives of animals in zoos and the complex dynamics of their care. His subsequent works, "The Dogcatcher and The Fox" and "Lessons from the Zoo, Ten Animals That Changed My Life," delve into historical fiction and memoir, respectively, each underscoring his deep connection to and passion for animal welfare.Doug's forthcoming novel promises to be another captivating exploration, this time focusing on our working animal partners such as elephants, horses, and his old friends, the mules. These animals, once indispensable for their roles in transportation, agriculture, and entertainment, faced an uncertain future with the advent of mechanization in the early 20th century. Through his storytelling, Doug aims to give these animals a voice, encouraging readers to consider the intricate relationships humans share with the creatures that depend on us."I don't pretend to know their stories," Doug says, "but I am compelled to give them a voice."Doug's fictional worlds challenge us to reflect on our complex and often contradictory relationship with animals, prompting us to think deeply about what it means to coexist on this planet. His work is a testament to the enduring bond between humans and animals, and his stories invite us to explore this connection in all its multifaceted dimensions.Doug's publications include:Roaming, Rambling, and Reminiscing: Musings from a South Georgia Mule Wagon (Non-Fiction, 2024)Lessons from the Zoo, Ten Animals That Changed My Life (Non-Fiction, Memoir, 2020)The Dogcatcher and The Fox (Historical Fiction, 2020)The Menagerie, A Zoo Story (Historical Fiction, 2012)Tune in to GeorgiaRadio.com to hear more from Doug as he shares insights from his latest book and discusses his fascinating journey from managing zoos to storytelling from a mule wagon.QUICK LINK: https://jdporterbooks.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/georgia-radio/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

While there, he goes to the grave of Isabella, his father's lover in Eden Lost, and meets Luci Blake, an American Red Cross nurse. India's borders and borderlands have been marked by conflict since its independence from the British in 1947. Kashmir and the Northeast regions of India along with many forgotten enclave areas have been witness to relentless violence that have upended lives for several decades. How does literature from these war zones represent the conflict and people's experiences? More specifically, how do writers narrativize the conflict and write about violence? Mirza Waheed from the world's most militarized zone of Kashmir and Aruni Kashyap from Assam in Northeast India have lived through conflicts, and their work has been deeply shaped by these experiences. Their writings in the form of fiction, essay and poetry present a glimpse of life under duress and military occupation. In this episode, they discuss the imperative to write about Kashmir and Assam, the problems and challenges they have faced while writing about these difficult topics as well as their experiences in the publishing industry. Mirza and Kashyap speak about pressing questions about how to write violence and the limits of such writing. They discuss questions of representation that are vital literary and visual discourses of these two volatile regions. In the case of Kashmir, the representational pitfalls have always been associated with exoticizing the space in films and statist discourses. The Northeast is doubly vilified, first as a conflict space and then as a subject of heavily discriminatory narratives about its people. How do writers write to subvert nationalist and statist narratives that have saturated the discussions on such conflictual spaces? Amrita Ghosh talks to Waheed and Kashyap on this Mehfil as they reflect the anguish and pain of people caught in a cycle of violence. Mirza Waheed is a writer and journalist from Kashmir and based in the UK. His debut novel The Collaborator was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize. The Collaborator is about life in Kashmir under militarization and violence and it was also the book of the year awarded by The Telegraph, Telegraph India, Financial Times and New Statesman. Waheed is also the author of Book of Gold Leaves and Tell her Everything. The Book of Gold Leaves was shortlisted for the DSC prize for South Asian Literature. Waheed has published articles in the New York Times, Guardian, BBC and Al Jazeera English, among others. Aruni Kashyap is a writer and translator from Assam, India and Associate Professor and Director of the Creative Writing program at the University of Georgia. His recent works include a story collection, His Father's Disease and the novel The House With a Thousand Stories. Along with editing a collection of stories called How to Tell the Story of an Insurgency, he has also translated two novels from Assamese to English, published by Zubaan Books and Penguin Random House. His poetry collection, There is No Good Time for Bad News was nominated for the 58th Georgia Author of the Year Awards 2022, a finalist for the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize and Four Way Books Levis Award in Poetry. Kashyap's short stories have appeared in many journals and literary magazines. Amrita Ghosh is Assistant Professor of English, specializing in South Asian literature at the University of Central Florida. She is the co-editor of Tagore and Yeats: A Postcolonial Reenvisioning (Brill 2022) and Subaltern Vision: A Study in Postcolonial Indian English Text (Cambridge Scholars 2012). Bestselling author Karen White is releasing “The House on Prytania Street,” the second novel in her Royal Street spin-off series, on May 9. The book follows a strong heroine in New Orleans as she tries to restart her life, with a plot involving a thriller ghost mystery and romance. White aims to create character-driven stories about Southern women with “grit” and explores themes of survival and family. White has planned the series to allow readers to pick up any book out of chronological order and dive into the plot blindly. White will hold a book signing event in Woodstock, Georgia, on May 9.Top of Form   Edward "Jay" Lionel Ball, a Woodstock man, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for multiple drug charges including distributing methamphetamine and manufacturing heroin. Ball was found guilty by a Cherokee County jury and sentenced by Superior Court Judge David Cannon Jr. as a recidivist, meaning he will serve the entire prison portion of his sentence without parole eligibility. The charges stem from a Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad investigation initiated in response to a tip about a man named Reginald Jerome Foster selling methamphetamine in Cherokee County. During the investigation, agents observed Ball supplying Foster with methamphetamine and heroin. Law enforcement later executed a search warrant and discovered nearly a pound of heroin in Ball's rented house, along with methamphetamine, scales, and baggies used for distribution, and handguns and ammunition. Ball's co-defendants, Reginald Jerome Foster and Katie Marissa Zepeta, were also charged and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate have passed two bills that would dissolve the current Cherokee County board of elections, replacing it with a new board appointed under a new process. If signed into law, most elections board members would be appointed by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners. Currently, the local Republican and Democratic parties appoint two members each, and the chair is chosen by the other four members of the elections board. The passing of the bills comes after a lawsuit questioning the current system's “constitutionality." Lawmakers believe that the bill should not affect voters when going to the polls to cast a vote.  One month after Creekview parted ways with longtime boys basketball coach Casey Gramling, the school found its new coach in Denmark's Tyler Whitlock. Whitlock has 16 years of coaching experience, most recently with Denmark in Alpharetta, and has five state playoff appearances since 2019. He added region championships in 2019 and 2020, with a 96-50 record over the last five seasons since starting the Danes' program. Whitlock led Denmark to the Class AAAAAAA playoffs this past season with a 16-12 overall record and a 7-3 mark in Region 6AAAAAAA. The Danes fell 54-50 to Osborne in the first round. Creekview and Denmark met once in 2022-23, with the Grizzlies winning 55-49. The Danes prided themselves on defense and physicality during Whitlock's time as coach, a mentality he plans to instill at Creekview. The Canton City Council has denied a request for a townhome neighborhood at Prominence Point Parkway The Georgia Department of Education has awarded $22,307 to eight Cherokee County Schools through its Opportunity Grants program, which seeks to expand learning options and opportunities for students. The grants, funded by federal stimulus funds under the American Rescue Plan, total $1,820,804 and will support fine arts, health and physical education, and world language programs, among others. Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods said that these grants ensure students have access to educational opportunities that prepare them for life and keep them engaged in school. Five Cherokee County basketball players earned all-metro honors from the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Friday. River Ridge's Mataya Gayle topped the list as the Girls Metro Player of the Year after leading the Knights to the Class AAAAAA state championship. Gayle averaged 17.3 points, 5.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. Gayle, who scored 25 points in River Ridge's 68-50 win over Lovejoy in the state title game, is committed to play in the Ivy League at Penn next season. Cherokee's Toni Warren, Sequoyah's Elle Blatchford and Woodstock's Karson Martin were honorable mentions. Rechsteiner, a Virginia Tech commit, led Etowah to the Class AAAAAA semifinals after hitting a late free-throw to beat St. Pius X and second-team all-metro honoree Spencer Elliott. He finished that game with 21 points and scored 15 points in a 56-53 semifinal loss to Alexander. Owens was a vital part of Cherokee's playoff run, which included the Warriors making the state championship game for the first time since 1982. He finished with 10 points and a go-ahead 3-pointer in a quarterfinal win over Carrollton. The New York Women's House of Detention was a fixture of Greenwich Village from 1932 to 1974. For public historian Hugh Ryan, its position as a cultural center is proof that jails and prisons were not always peripheral to the development of communities in the United States. In fact, they were sometimes considered in the urban planning of cities and neighborhoods. Ryan discovered the Women's House of Detention (also known as The House of D) on a walking tour, where he also learned of its unfamiliar history as a queer landmark. His curiosity unearthed a plethora of evidence verifying this claim, largely drawn from social worker documentation of the queer experiences of justice-involved youth and working-class people throughout the twentieth century. In his recent book, The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison (Bold Type Books, 2022), Ryan asserts: "The House of D helped make Greenwich Village queer, and the Village, in return, helped define queerness for America. No other prison has played such a significant role in our history, particularly for working-class women and transmasculine people." Ryan also demonstrates how people housed at the institution, such as notable activists Angela Davis and Afeni Shakur, informed each other about the intersections of Black and queer liberation movements. In this episode, Malcolm Tariq, senior manager of editorial projects for PEN America's Prison and Justice Writing, asks Ryan about being a student of abolition, the ethics of constructing narratives from archives, and how people in the House of Detention participated in the resistance efforts at nearby Stonewall in 1969. Hugh Ryan is a writer and curator, and most recently, the author of The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison, which New York Magazine called one of the best books of 2022. His first book, When Brooklyn Was Queer, won a 2020 New York City Book Award, was a New York Times Editors' Choice in 2019, and was a finalist for the Randy Shilts and Lambda Literary Awards. He was honored with the 2020 Allan Berube Prize from the American Historical Association. Since 2019, he has worked with the NYC Dept. of Education to develop LGBTQ+ inclusive educational materials and trainings. Malcolm Tariq is a poet and playwright from Savannah, Georgia. He is the author of Heed the Hollow (Graywolf, 2020), winner of the Cave Canem Poetry Prize and the 2020 Georgia Author of the Year Award in Poetry, and Extended Play (Gertrude Press, 2017). He was a 2016-2017 playwriting apprentice at Horizon Theatre Company and a 2020-2021 resident playwright with Liberation Theatre Company. A graduate of Emory University, Malcolm holds a PhD in English from the University of Michigan. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, where he is the senior manager of editorial projects for Prison and Justice Writing at PEN America.

Hello, Lit listeners. If you were one of those high school kids who spent hours holed up in your bedroom spinning your favorite albums on your turntable at ear-bleeding volume until your mama hollered at you to turn off that racket and take out the trash, and dreaming of blowing your one-horse town to become a rock star, this is the episode for you. Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘The Weight of Sound', about aspiring rock musician Spider Webb, who at 18 announces to his parents that he will skip high school graduation and move to Athens, Georgia, to launch his career in the birthplace of R.E.M. and the B-52s. Through rotating points of view and covering a span of over twenty years, the book traces the ways Spider and his music affect the people in his life: family, fellow musicians, girlfriends, fans, roadies, and music industry lackeys. As drummer for the rock band Uncle Green, Peter McDade spent fifteen years traveling the highways of America in a series of Ford vans. While the band searched for fame and a safe place to eat before a gig, he began writing short stories and novels. Uncle Green went into semi-retirement after four labels, seven records, and one name change; Peter went to Georgia State University and majored in History and English, eventually earning an MA in History. His first novel, ‘The Weight of Sound', was published by Wampus Multimedia in 2017 and won the Georgia Author of the Year Award for best debut. ‘Songs By Honeybird', also published by Wampus Multimedia, was released in 2022. Both books have soundtracks of original songs.Given Peter's cred as both writer and musician, he's doing double duty as both author and music guru in this episode. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:What Peter would ask Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham if he couldPeter's Jimmy Page encounterSeeing Prince in concert and Peter's blog on PrinceThe origin of what became the novel ‘The Weight of Sound' and the soundtrack that accompanies itThe time one of Peter's students outted him in class as a former member of Uncle Green The appeal of discovering lost or forgotten albumsPoking fun at drummers in the novel while also emphasizing the importance of the drummer in a bandWhat makes a drummer great and why John Bonham, Ringo Starr, and Charlie Watts are examples of great drummersWords of wisdom about being in a band from Spider (character from ‘The Weight of Sound')And words of wisdom about being a band's road manager from another character in ‘The Weight of Sound'Life on the road for an up-and-coming band like Monkeyhole in ‘The Weight of Sound' but also Peter's band in the 1990s, Uncle GreenPeter and I play a game of “Only Pick One,” a road game Monkeyhole plays in the novelWhy Freddie Mercury is a godWhat I learned about the music business from ‘The Weight of Sound' and Peter's experience as part of Uncle Green and how the business is different nowPeter on making the books he wanted to make and his idea of success MUSIC IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE:No copyright indie rock background music“Over and Over” by Fleetwood Mac“My Name is Prince” by Prince & The New Power Generation“I Don't Wanna Know About It” by Uncle Green“Guilty Party” by Uncle Green“See No Evil” by Television“Gardenia” from ‘The Weight of Sound' soundtrack“Pay Me Now” from ‘The Weight of Sound' soundtrack“She Said She Said” by The Beatles“Drive Into the Sky” from ‘The Weight of Sound' soundtrack“Change Myself” from ‘The Weight of Sound' soundtrack“Doin' Fine” from ‘The Weight of Sound' soundtrack LINKS: Peter McDade's website: www.peterjmcdade.comPeter's blog on Prince: www.peterjmcdade.com/?page_id=52Peter on Twitter, @PeterJMcDade‘The Weight of Sound' soundtrack on Bandcamp: https://wampusretrospectives.bandcamp.com/album/the-weight-of-sound-original-soundtrack Christy Alexander Hallberg's website: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/Christy Alexander Hallberg on Twitter, @ChristyHallbergChristy Alexander Hallberg on Instagram, @christyhallbergChristy Alexander Hallberg's YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfSnRmlL5moSQYi6EjSvqag

TAYLOR BROWN grew up on the Georgia coast.  His work has appeared in a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, The Rumpus, Garden & Gun, Chautauqua, The North Carolina Literary Review, and many others. He is the recipient of a Montana Prize in Fiction, a three-time finalist for the Southern Book Prize, and was named the 2021 Georgia Author of the Year. He's also been a finalist for the Press 53 Open Awards, Machigonne Fiction Contest, Wabash Prize in Fiction, Rick DeMarinis Short Story Contest, Dahany Fiction Prize, and Doris Betts Fiction Prize.  He is the author of a short story collection, In the Season of Blood and Gold (Press 53, 2014), as well as five novels:  Fallen Land (St. Martin's Press, 2016), The River of Kings (St. Martin's Press, 2017), Gods of Howl Mountain (St. Martin's Press, 2018), Pride of Eden (St. Martin's Press, 2020), and Wingwalkers (St. Martin's Press, 2022).  Taylor, an Eagle Scout, graduated from the University of Georgia in 2005.  He's settled in Savannah, Georgia, after long stints in Buenos Aires, San Francisco, and the mountains and coasts of North Carolina.  He is the editor-in-chief of BikeBound.com, and he likes old motorcycles, thunderstorms, and dogs with beards. A former WWI ace pilot and his wingwalker wife barnstorm across Depression-era America, performing acts of aerial daring. “They were over Georgia somewhere, another nameless hamlet whose dusty streets lay flocked and trembling with the pink handbills they'd rained from the sky that morning, the ones that announced the coming of DELLA THE DARING DEVILETTE, who would DEFY THE HEAVENS, shining like a DAYTIME STAR, a WING-WALKING WONDER borne upon the wings of CAPTAIN ZENO MARIGOLD, a DOUBLE ACE of the GREAT WAR, who had ELEVEN AERIAL VICTORIES over the TRENCHES OF FRANCE.” Wingwalkers is one-part epic adventure, one-part love story, and, as is the signature for critically-acclaimed author Taylor Brown, one large part American history. The novel braids the adventures of Della and Zeno Marigold, a vagabond couple that funds their journey to the west coast in the middle of the Great Depression by performing death-defying aerial stunts from town to town, together with the life of the author (and thwarted fighter pilot) William Faulkner, whom the couple ultimately inspires during a dramatic air show—with unexpected consequences for all. Brown has taken a tantalizing tidbit from Faulkner's real life—an evening's chance encounter with two daredevils in New Orleans—and set it aloft in this fabulous novel. With scintillating prose and an action-packed plot, he has captured the true essence of a bygone era and shed a new light on the heart and motivations of one of America's greatest authors.

That s why Joy Clark will remember this Happy Hour forever. It s Joy s first podcast. If you ve never heard Joy play or sing, you are in for a treat she s the real deal. She also has a fascinating life story that involves being home schooled on the West Bank and a long lost African American cousin in Germany. Andrew Duhon almost bought himself a time bomb in the shape of a touring van today, but luckily figured out the truth before he got himself killed on the road.
